914World.com _ FS/WTB: 914 Parts _ FS New Brass Tumbler Set w/ Springs

Posted by: tweet Apr 12 2013, 11:55 AM

These are brand new brass tumblers and copper springs for 914 and 911. Finally have one set of keys to open all of your locks. This is way cheaper than having a Porsche dealer cut you a key. (I called a Porsche dealer; they said $83.00 to duplicate one master key and $200 to order one by VIN.)

You will receive the following in each set ordered:

#1 Tumblers - four each
#2 Tumblers - four each
#3 Tumblers - four each
#4 Tumblers - four each
10 new springs

#5 Tumbler not included; reuse your own, it is found in your secondary locks (glove box, front trunk, rear trunk) for use with a master key.

Also included (not in picture, but is included in first set only; you only need one) :
1 new pair of tweezers
1 plastic container (so you can find your tumblers the next time you need to re-key a lock)

Each set is $37.95 shipped to your door. (CONUS) This is a discounted price for forum members from my Ebay shipped price of $44.95 - 15% off.

Paypal to TYPE4PLUS@gmail.com
money order
check

If you need individual Tumblers ($3.50 each shipped) Springs (5 for 3.50 shipped).

These are from a reputable source, from an American supplier.

Remember you can still reuse your old tumbler pins that don't need to be changed or keep them as spares. You should have left overs for future locks.

Hello Everyone,
Please be assured that you will all receive the tumblers as promised. I checked the tracking on the first 5 original sets and they were all delivered on the 15th, one day ahead of the expected delivery date. These sets went out to members that paid on the 12th. I received the second batch of tumblers on Friday, 4/19. I packed them up on Saturday 4/20 and mailed them today 4/22. These were for members that paid on 4/13 through 4/19. Today I received the third batch of tumblers and they will be shipped out by Wednesday, 4/24, for anyone that has paid from 4/20 through 4/23. I hope this helps with any confusion.
thanks,
dan

I was in the first group and was shocked at how fast my order arrived (I think 3 days). Everything as represented and now, all locks on my 914 are functional plus I had some left over to take care of a door on my 911S.

Much appreciated Dan,

Keith

Forgive me for the interruption but how do you tell the tumblers apart , other than the slight differences in the top and bottom of the tumbler, is that the difference. Sorry for my old eyes

The tumblers have extremely small differences. They are notched at either end or not at all. The sides have different thicknesses and the bottom edge has different dimensions. At first glance, they all look the same, but they are indeed all different. The originals, if they have not been changed out already, are stamped 1,2,3,4 from factory. If you clean off the muck and grab a magnifying glass or such, you will see the very tiny number on the tumbler. After market ones come plain. But do not fret. I devised a trick to help sort them. First and foremost, never mix them up when you have them already sorted. I label the tumblers I am selling to make it easier. Next as you take the old ones out, sort these as well. This will make your life so much easier when re-keying. I also scotch taped one of each tumbler to a white background, and labeled the cardboard 1-4. This way they would not fall and get lost, and i can tell them apart. It's a cheat sheet. Then all you have to do is lay one tumbler over the other and match them up. You need good light, patience and some sort of magnification if your eyes are not 20/20 anymore. Mine are definitely not, haven't been for some time. Hope this helps.

These tumblers will work on all of your locks, door handles and your ignition. At least Porsche got it right with the 914 lock cylinders.

These are brand new brass tumblers and springs for 914 and 911. Finally have one set of keys to open all of your locks. This is way cheaper than having a Porsche dealer cut you a key. ( I called a Porsche dealer recently, they said $83.00 for one master key!!!)

You will receive the following in each set ordered:

#1 Tumblers - four each
#2 Tumblers - four each
#3 Tumblers - four each
#4 Tumblers - four each

#5 Tumbler does not need to be replaced or changed, it is the same for all the locks and valet keys.

Also included:
20 new springs
1 new pair of tweezers (not in picture, but is included in first set only; only need one tweezer)
1 long needle/pin (makes it easier to remove springs from their housing)

Each set is $25.00 plus $3 shipping to wherever you live. (CONUS)
If you need individual Tumblers ($2.00 each shipped) Springs (5 for 2.00 shipped).

These are from a reputable source.

Remember you can still reuse your old tumbler pins that don't need to be changed or keep them as spares. You should have left overs for future locks.

Have plenty of sets in stock.

I recently ordered and received tumblers for VW. But per the rules, I cannot post ads for non-Porsche 914 items. The VW tumblers are different than ours. PM your VW's year and which locks you need them for. I probably have them. If not, I may be able to get them.

What if your keys are in less than perfect condition? I have three keys that work, but work poorly. I tend not to lock the doors for that reason. Drivers door is the worst. Is this a sure fix?

This kit, as with most things in life is not a "sure fix". It is for re-keying your locks so that you have a matched set. It is useful for re-keying mismatched locks, worn tumblers, broken tumblers, bent tumblers, broken springs. The problem you are describing can be caused by one or more different reasons. Without having the locks in hand, it is not possible for me to tell you what is wrong.
Here is some of my lock restoration work;

So probably the best best would be to send the set in and get it done right. Have new keys that work all the time and all the locks.

Since all my keys are old and worn, could I have a new key cut and then refurbish the cylinders with your set to wind up with new keys that work well? Any problem with this approach?

That is the best logical approach. New tumblers help compensate for excessively worn keys and deeply scored cylinder housings. So if you have a new duplicate cut, and then use it for your re-key, it will also help you out in the re-key process. With the new key in hand, and your lock apart, you will see exactly if the tumblers sit flush as they should. When you reassemble the locks, your new key will let you know immediately, if things are keyed correctly and if your key is cut correctly.

Hi, I am interested in re-keying the locks on my 914 and wondering if you still have a set of tumblers available. Also, my current key works on the ignition and the driver side door. Should one set be enough to re-key the other locks? I am new to the forum and to 914's so any info is appreciated.

Please let me know how i can purchase a set from you.

I still have the key code card that came with my 914 when my father bought it in 74. from the code how would a valet key be cut? I am thinking about having a new master key black and valet red key done. I know my father must have had the ignition lock cylinder replaced because only the red key now works in the ignition lock cylinder and the driver door lock cylinder. How do you know which tumbler inside the lock cylinder is the valet one? I have rekeyed my own locks on my daily driver when I had to swap over the lock cylinder and tumblers into another part that I added to my car.

Hello,
Key by code is cut with the proper locksmithing equipment, experience, and reference material. If the code is available it is more straight forward. If the code is not available then the lock has to be decoded, which also requires tools, knowledge and experience with the locks. However, these methods cost more because more labor and time is involved or if you have the fancy equipment ($$$$$) the locksmith has to recover his cost invested in the code machine. Code cutting machines run in the thousands of dollars, even tens of thousands. We don't have fancy equipment, we do it the way it would have been done when the 914 was still in production, manually.
As for the tumbler questions, it boils down to experience as well. You learn to identify the tumblers by just looking at them. The valet is distinctive and there aren't any in the ignition lock.
But, none of this will get your locks keyed alike unless they are rekeyed. You would need to determine which key/key code you would like to retain and rekey the necessary locks to restore the car's original keying. Dan and I would be happy to provide you with these services, just shoot us a pm.
Thanks,
Alicia

I currently work at a Toyota dealership with a code cutting machine, I just need to be trained in the use of it by one of our parts guys. I was just curious if the valet tumbler had a special number on it like the regular key discs ie 1,2,3,4 etc. I may be contacting you in the near future if I need some lock/key work done. Thank you for your input thus far. smile.gif

If you need individual Tumblers ($3.50 each shipped) Springs (5 for 3.50 shipped).

These are from a reputable source, from an American supplier.

Remember you can still reuse your old tumbler pins that don't need to be changed or keep them as spares. You should have left overs for future locks.

Do you sell other parts for the lock cylinders? Specifically the seals for the door tumblers and the trunk? I need a tumbler kit as well if these are still available. My set of Audi/VW tumblers are .012 thicker than the Porsche tumblers.

Thanks,

Dan

Posted by: tweet Dec 26 2018, 04:19 PM

Yes, VW is different than Porsche 914. We do stock VW tumbler kits for a lot of different model years. We also have seals for the 914 door lock cylinders, 914 trunk lock (both seals), 911 door handle lock cylinders and door handle base gasket seals for 914 and 911. And we also have keys blanks for all Porsche from 1950-1998 and vintage VW.

In respect of the forum rules, we can only advertise 914 stuff, but have all kinds of new and used lock parts.

Please PM a total for a tumbler set and the internal seals for both doors and the trunk. I am concerned that I am trying to match to a worn aftermarket key. How can I decode the lock cylinder and have you cut me a new factory key? I was an Audi shop foreman for 20+ years, so I have coded many locks over the years. My reaplacement tumblers are stamped 1-4, the originals are not marked.

Thanks,

Dan

Worn, irregular, and damaged keys make it more difficult to rekey. What model and year is the car you are rekeying?

What model year is the car you need the seals for; which locks?
