914World.com _ FS/WTB: 914 Parts _ 69-74 911,914, 915 Type ZF Limited Slip Differential.

Posted by: Martin Baker Dec 21 2015, 08:57 PM

1969-1974 911,914 or early 915 type trans-axle, ZF PORSCHE limited slip differential.

$3000.00

Not NOS but close. This unit was more than likely purchased as a replacement unit by someone, and not taken from a trans-axle that had been removed from a known car. I am going to use the Guard GT LSD, so I must to sell this one.

I do not have the correct out drives for it, and are difficult to locate.

I sent this unit to Gordon Ledbetter, owner of OREGON RENNSPORT LLC, who is well versed in the 911/914/915 ZF LSD unit, for inspection and repair. Based on what he found during inspection, he believes that it was only installed and ran very little, less than 100 miles, or never run at all, only installed, so it has had a ring gear bolted to it, it has been in a trans-axle, a 914 trans-axle I bought a few years back. If I had to guess, the trans-axle was built up, then stored until I bought it. >>
Gordon provided me with multiple photos of the internal parts and found it to be set up 80%, with no wear to the internals. He reassembled it to the 80% @ 60 pounds pre-load, flange to flange. My asking price is based on two experts in the PORSCHE trans-axle business. >
I will insist on shipping insurance, due to loss or damage to such a rare part. No choice. Shipping is costly due to the parts weight. Inquires welcome

Well, first good luck unloading this ZF. Fyi, I think your price point is a little too high as it's "almost " new plus a new Guard GT LSD is within the same price point. Your buyer has to have the mind set....Factory only to be able to step up for this.
Also, you might want to list it on the Bird site for more exposure.

Wow thanks for that great, very usable info. Opinions vary wildly. Thank you for yours. I think. FYI, it is on Pelican.

Martin, your fine, last one I sold was a 40% setup, at little 0ver $2500. That was 2 years ago. What people forget is there is a market for original parts. Sure you can get a lot of other LSDs or TBD, but they each have there benefit. In a period correct 911, or 914-6GT knowing that it is all original is a big plus.

Also certain sanctioning bodies will not access points if you are running factory option parts. ZF's fit that bill, Guards will not in a tear down. Rare option yes, but still a factory option. Carry on beerchug.gif

We sold one last year. About the same $.
Went overseas. As 914forme says original parts are original parts.
Merry Christmas

I totally agree and if I could fine these stupid out drives, I would keep it. I would use it. I think it would be nice to see it go to some super rare car that needs it, but I just want to be able to buy the Guard unit. Gordon Ledbetter is building a trans axle for me, and tells me, to find these out drives is impossible. I listen to people who know what they are talking about. Gordon is a PRO, and a great guy. Based on the condition of this unit, I was told to ask 4K for it. (Matt at GT Gears and Gordon)
This is a know working, fresh part, ready to use. Its not junk. No questions of its condition, this is a PORSCHE vintage race car part. I would buy it for spares if I it were a different situation. I am told no that most racing groups are allowing aftermarket diffs without question. In my club, its not been an issue. Its not the Historic's, but its still fun. That is ALL I care about.

Martin....

Check with Tony at:

Martin
Just FYI when installed in an early 915 (in a 911 chassis) the output flange is
part # 919 332 210 01 which is a larger diameter item, 110mm vs. 94mm, this info may be helpful to your prospects.
Don't bum out, this is a very desirable item.
Also, I believe that standard 914 flanges can be machined to the same dimensions as the LSD ones. Seek qualified advise.
The only difference would be the driveshafts and CVs will have to extend 5mm more toward the gearbox on each side.

First "Thanks" to all the response from everyone. I appericiate the support. Says allot about out little un-loved world! I love my 914 more than I should. It's fact.

Tony at Stuttgart Specialties didn't have them, sold out a long time ago. Thanks for the tip.

Found this,

http://www.einmaligparts.com/Joint-Flange18_p_84735.html#

but the company has MULTIPLE bad reviews, multiple sights. Enough to make one not even contact them. I did send an e-mail to see if the actually have them. The price, well let alone the price.

The fix seems to be a spacer, custom made for about $50.00 by a company called California Motorsports. It goes in before the out drive. Gordon pointed out one small disadvantage, but for a rarely driven race car it should be OK, It will load the internals gears more to the out side but will work.

Thanks for all the response to this. I like the idea of machining the original to size, add spacers. No one had mentioned this after talking to multiple people.

I really just want a GT unit. Someone could brag about having this in his trailer queen, while I, on the same weekend, am wringing the life out of my poor car, trying to catch my friends 240Z!

FYi

California Motorsports is top notch. Bobby Hart used to work at Aase Bros and builds race engines and trannies that have been used at Sebring, Daytona and elsewhere.

For mine all I need is this little spacer that they will make for $50.00. It drops in to make up for the lost distance. Then you can use the 4 cylinder parts. More than likely the way I will end up going. Both Gordon and Roger Brown (from California Motorsports) says they do it allot, but I really want to sell this thing. I want the Guard unit. First race is in March, but that is like tomorrow. Trust me.

I have only spoken with Roger Brown, but he seems very professional/knowledgeable. I just wish they were closer to California!
