So. Did a compression check on my new 914. 90/90/85/90. Adjusted the valves. No change. Added some oil to one cylinder. No change. I'm guessing valves. When I got this car it had a bad exhaust leak. Come to find it was missing all the copper gaskets at the head and both collector gaskets. I'm not the expert when it comes to heads. But I'm guessing the missing gaskets could have caused some damage at the valves? Especially if it was driven a lot like that? So my question is. Any recommendations for someone on a budget? They are four bolt intakes so 1.7 or 1.8 heads. Not sure really. Anyone have a used decent set for sale? Any advice as far as getting them rebuilt? I'm in So Cal.

The closest place to take the two heads to in LA is , European Motors in Hawthorne.
They will also have heads if you simply want to swap them out...parts too.
Contact is Jorge.....they've been working on these type fours for awhile now.

1.7 and 1.8 heads are not the same. bolt pattern is but that not valves and chambers.

I have a set of 1.7's I had rimco rebuild. if your interested

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the 1.7 and 1.8 heads before pulling the motor and removing them? Any idea on what a set of these stock heads rebuilt cost?

One other question. Are the heads interchangeable without machine work when it comes to the 1.7 and 1.8?

Based on your VIN; your car is a '72 ?
IIRC, that is a 1.7 motor

Yes. And the engine block is an EA motor. So appears to be a 1.7. But it looks like some work was done to it in the past. I see red rtv sealant on a couple of the case bolts. And the heads and cylinders might look a bit fresher. I could be wrong. It's a confusing story with this car. But someone posted the VIN for this car a couple of years ago from a craigslist ad. And the ad back then said it had a 1.8. So I'm not really sure.

1.8's are easy to identify from FI parts used; can you post a pic, like a top view.

No FI on this motor. It had a single weber when I bought it. So I'm not sure a picture would help from what you are telling me.

I second this. My 1.7 heads took about 2 weeks to do and about 300 bucks for a simple refresh. New guides, valve grind, cleaning & blasting.
