Were these nuts originally yellow zinc or matte nickel? I have two and Theo both the latter though would like to “upgrade” if originality-appropriate.
Thanks!

The posts/nuts are for the early cars before the later sloped style realy board covers were offered (necesssitated by the added seatbelt reels. The posts and nuts I recall seeing were yellow zinc, that does not mean they might not have been something else. Sorry I am no help to you.

Post and nut were yellow zinc. When zinc faded parts got polished to chrome like finsh.

i think
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3457 is right with his comment.
there is a lot of nuts etc on mine that have long lost their zinc chromate coating.
its not just a matter of polishing it off. its a sacrificial coating in terms of corrosion.
naturally disappears rather than corrosion attacking the metal of the nut or bolt itself.
i go with the ageing theory of leaving it all alone rather than renewing it since i am not restoring my car - been going down the preservation road. unless i have to change a part for purposes of maintenance.

i am like you. had the car so long some of the coatings have disappeared in front of my eyes over the 37 years. i don't even remember some of them. ones i do remember are the suspension fixing plates in the front trunk. they used to be cadmium plated when i bought the car in 89. its gradually disappeared. and i have never polished them.
it certainly matters to somebody fully restoring a 914 back to delivery condition.
if i was doing that i would make every effort to get it right. just so i could watch it all disappear again.
