Nope, all rusted away....they import them from the US....can't be modified....the TUV won't let them....they have been banned in some countries as too loud.

NOOOOOOOOO

Posted by: DrifterJay Mar 14 2004, 03:11 PM

so I couldnt import mine since its modified?

Posted by: Jacco Mar 14 2004, 03:25 PM

Heej,

I'm almost from Germany (the Netherlands actually, like Jeroen)
and I can tell you that 914's are in short supply here.
80% of all 914's were exported to the USA, so that leaves only 20% in europe....
Given the lousy climate overhere... you do the math wacko.gif
for example:
In our country (population 16 million) there are approx 100 driveable 914's and a total of 250 but those are only estimations.
Don't really know the figures for Germany but I recall something of 1500 914's on the road... but please don't pin me down on that.....
In Germany you are close to where the 914 was born, but that doesn't mean parts or service is cheap. (For me it was cheaper to have parts shipped from the States than to buy them from a Germany parts supplier blink.gif )

Hope this info didn't disappointed you to much..

that's most likely correct ...

i grew up in germany and teeners were not part of the automotive landscape.
i have seen more 914s here in CA in a month than in 35+ years in germany.

last time i checked (88) there were 3771 914s registered in germany.
that doesn't mean they were actually driven. by now, it's probably half that number.

your car won't be street legal in it's current setup over there.
it could be modified to pass the TÜV check, i'm sure, but that might not be cheap.

US soldiers used to have TÜV excemption in germany, meaning they could bring over and drive their cars without TÜV approval, but that has been changed a long time ago.

on the other hand, once you get on the autobahn for the first time, you will KILL for the chance to drive a 914 over there. laugh.gif

Back again,

just checked on the link provided above... and there were 1215 registered 914's in 2003 in Germany
The number has been declining rapidly: according to Andy 1988: 3771 registered according to the German 914 club in 1998 there were still 1430 registerd 914's

truth is that most 914's that come up for sale over here are some sort of US import, and if their not they are in a sorry state of terminal rust bucketness.... (well most of em anyways.. not ours of course..... don't look at the pic....)

which would actually technicall be a re-import!
(if you look at it from a german perspective)

When I went to Holland and Germany this fall I saw 3.
Jeroen's two and one at Mittlemotor, thats it.
I also went to a Porsche club meet and talked to all the guys there about Porsches and pretty much Jeroen is the 914 guy besides Jacco in Holland. There just aint any left!
Mittlemotor says there are still a few and most of them are sixes although the counterperson had a 73 2.0l that he was doing lots of rust repair on.

Last year while in Stuggart, I saw only one 914 the entire time, he was near the Wilhelma (sp?) Zoo...he was speeding past us while we waited for the train.

I was in Germany for 2 weeks and never saw a 914....lesee, that would have been in....ah..
1969....humm, go figure. laugh.gif

Well, there are e few left, but you just don't seem to come across them. I've only seen one or two 914's running around in the wild since I drive a 914 (about 4 years now)
As a proof that there are a couple of teeners, here's a link to some pictures I took of a small 914 drive I co-organized. (my teener was not there, I drove in the orange bug together with a friend)
On the pictures is also a very nice signal orange 914/6 total resto, fender flares... very clean.
Unfortunaltely only the thumbs work, I had to get the larger pics off to save space on my university account. but If you're really interested in any of them I still have them on my pc

Jacco, I sure didn't see all those 914's when I was at Groningen! Nice city though for a university town.

hi folks,

some words from a real german smilie_flagge6.gif wink.gif

The 914 is not very popular here in germany, cause it was selled as a vw-porsche and was never broadly
accepted as a real porsche.

In the late 80's and erarly 90' s most of the remaining cars were parted out or wrecked.
Whats left over is in a very good condition or completely crap ...

I'm living in Berlin, which is a city with 3,8 million residents (btw the biggest german city and the german capitol)
with approx. 10 running cars (914's wink.gif ) including my teener.
In the southern parts of germany you will find some more cars, but not that much like at the west coast of the u.s.

do it the other way around : re-import some of the famous califonia rust free chassis to germany ...

Btw i will need a pair of rust free doors and a front hood for my /6 restoration project in the near future wink.gif

Benno,
Does it make sense to export the California cars to EU? Is there a real market? While generally in better shape here, many have been 'improved' by their owners. Carbs replacing FI, wider wheels, later suspension, etc.

They are not cars for purists, but are fun drivers. Can we make some money and preserve the breed at the same time? I know a bunch of old SL's and early V8 MB coupes and converts have headed back.

Are any smog/safety regulations waived on older cars?

The CA cars are loved for their rust free status, and there 'might' be some money in doing some reimport to germany/europe but I doubt it.
US 'restored' cars are known here for their nice bodywork (read: bondo sculpture)
Off course not all of them are but some how most imported CA 914's are hell holes full of bondo... they seem to import all the wrong ones laugh.gif
Maybe a little export of relatively rust free chassis or bodyparts might work out. Plus the market over here is much smaller than the one overthere...

I've seen 914's being sawed in two by you guys which are in a much better shape then the 914's that are being restored here.
I do sometimes envy you US people for haveing all the good stuff wink.gif
anyways..

oh and one more thing you don't have to worry about smog regulations or anything the rules that were applicalble in the year the car was manufactured is the one it has to pass, for the Netherlands that means no (or very little) restrictions.

heej Geoff

Yeah Groningen is a very nice city, and as I said 914's are a very rare sighting... but I know some hideouts of a couple of 914's, they're usually tucked away very well.

For example take a look at our 914's hide out... If you don't know it's there you'll never find it.

.......okay, okay with the teener sticking out like this it's not so hard to spot being signal orange and all, but when the doors are closed you get my point laugh.gif
