Has anyone used an aftermarket oil tank and mounted it say....in the rear trunk or up front? If so, who made it....?

I'm thinking of doing it because of PRICE, fittings (AN) and better weight distribution....

I had one made for my 911. It cost $350, and it fits in the smugglers box without ANY cutting. You could sketch a tank with dimensions that you want and have a place like Howe Racing make it for you, Coleman might make them also.

Oh my tank is less than 1/2 the cost of the Smart Racing tank, and it fits w/o cuting, unlike the SRP tank

drysump oil tanks must be tall and thin. i think you'd have packaging problems with a rear trunk mount. the front has issues with hot, expensive oil lines running past or through the cabin, but the volume of the lines might let you get away with a slightly smaller tank. i think if i were looking to relocate something, i'd move the battery to the front and mount a tank in the space vacated by removing the battery tray and support, and as deep as possible. good for cg, keeps the lines short, and the heat in the engine room.

once upon a time, ATL made oil tanks, maybe Moroso too.

Battery has been relocated to the cockpit behind the passenger seat, puke box for the breather is mounted on the wall above where the battery was....not a real problem to move....-12 AN oil lines are already run to the front mounted cooler.

don't move the tank rearward for a race car....

its a trade off with stock versus front.. but don't move the weight backwards.....

Does't Motormeisters make a six tank that sits where the battery tray was. Eddie914 has on in his 914/6 track car. The weight would be decent with the tank there as it offsets some of the drivers weight side to side.

Are you going to run a fuel cell? If so mount where the stock gas tank is. Run the lines through the pass. side longs and heater tubes. It will keep most of the heat from the oil lines out of the interior. You have shorter runs to the cooler. The vent from the enging can be ran to the tank also.

Current setup has a stock tank but I'm leaning towards a fuel cell. The front trunk holds the internally mounted oil cooler with a cowl over it behind a 916 style front bumper.....I might move the cooler up in front behind a 75-76 rubber bumper cap w/o the heavy steel support......

Still exploring options by using my experience and others to do this low price like.

I will try to get some pictures fo my friends race car. It has the tank mounted where the stock fuel tank was and a fuel cell in the spare tire well. The front RX-7 oil cooler is vented through the hood.

One of the locals has a prototype MSHP oil tank sitting where his battery tray used to. Works great for him. I thought I had pics from one of the Roadglue breakfasts, but I can't find them.

There are a number of aftermarket "swirl pot" type tanks you can buy. Check through the large racer's catalogs. Many are baffled as well, though a tall skinny tank doesn't need the baffles as much. Figure out how much space you can devote to it, then start looking at the catalogs.

If you find a stock tank its not a big deal to cut the fittings off and replace the return line with a -12 weld on male and same with feed line -16. I just changed mine over to this set up over the last few weeks.

You have to mount the filter seperately. This gives you a wide choice of filters you can use..Like theCanton or Oberg filter, Or you can out the 964 oil cooler retrofit and use the 944 filters (or 964 filters)

I have the oil tank mounted in the trunk, left side just behind the rear axle shaft. The supply line to the engine is not very long and misses the moving parts under the car well. I did not notice any difference due to the weight moving rearward, but the tank was originally in the right side of the engine compt when the car had a four in it. We did do a rebalance to tilt the car slightly to the right front after all was ssaid and done, but not much was needed. The feed to the front goes through the right side heater duct opening and returns same and goes through the filter then back into the tank. Puke take is in the rear right trunk corner. Seems like the savings wouldn't be that huge after you factor in a Canton remote filter setup (or similar), the extra lines esp. if front-mounted, and so forth

Unless of course you can find a clean used tank for like <$200...

I think your buddy Jim Patrick uses the large Peterson tank also.

You can get metric-to-AN adapters for the engine lines (Pegasus) to run AN- braided instead of the spendy factory ones.
