*this may or may not be true, but the run is happening.
Where?
Mark D.
Ah, very good question...
There is a ranger station at the bottom of the San Gabriel canyon, we'll meet there at 9:14. Here's a rough Map, THOMAS to post additional directions...
I think I'll be there. I'll also see if I can get Rick (2-Oh) and MikeD plus a couple others from the Santa Clarita area out there.
I've been wanting to try this road for a while. Count me in
I'm in.
I'm in, that is one of my favorites. I'm in Glendora.
OK, I'm in, but be sure and check with the forrest service to make sure the area is open...Some of the canyons are still closed due to the fires this year...
Big Tujunga...Closed
Alisio...Closed
Angeles Hwy (CAL 2)...Closed
2-OH!
39 is open to GMR....
Rob
I'm in.
Any updates on the list of who's going ??? (Cheap excuse for a bump)
2-OH!
just came back from the G & R Swap Meet and everyone posted has confirmed along with a few new runners.
Dan, can you update the first post, bitte?
Guys (and gals) contact Dan with your address for shipping or pick up patch at the Run.
I am in, for a tuning run. Please add me to the list.
-Robert
I'm in!

I saw my name on the list, so I guess I gotta show up. I'll bring the black car if my Spretke transmission holds up.
me in to0!
Ah crap... Somehow I didn't realize this was the same day as the Autocross for PCA OCR. I'm tentative for now...
http://pcaocr.com/AX2009.htm
Just a bump to put this back on the map.
Thomas - According to this website Hwy 39 is still closed.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/conditions/conditions-road.shtml
Hmm I just looked on that site and it looks to be open
Crap, I'd love to go, but my car's rear passenger side brake is still having lockup issues on these kinds of runs
-Tony
I think I'll drive the Miata ................. uh ..... The Gayman!
I might bring a surprise guest along.
Steve, thanks for the update and the offer to check out the road this afternoon! If by chance the road happens to be closed we can come up with an alternative route.
Oldschool, sorry to hear about your car
Any new attendees?
EDIT - Thomas caught up with the ranger station; East Fork Rd will (and is) open so it's all good! Yeah! Time to drive . Hwy 39 is closed AT East Fork but the roads Thomas wants are open.
Thomas - There's a Cultural Center on San Gabriel Cyn Road just after you make the turn to go into the forest. It looks like a great place to meet. Lots of parking and it's right off the road.
Alright, this thing is still on!! No need to worry. We are driving up to East Fork (which is open) and then taking the Glendora Mtn. road to Baldy. Thomas just called Caltrans and they did confirm that all of these routes are open. GAME ON!
ok we all meet at the cultural center on san gabriel canyon road at 9.14 am,see you all on sunday
Cultural Center? ... Se habla Espanol?
Well, I would certainly try a spare caliper for this run. The symptom is that when I do mountain drives it starts smoking. This happened a few months ago and I adjusted the venting clearance and it happened again a few weeks ago.
My theory is that earlier this year when I replaced the pads with new ones I must have set the pistons in an unhappy area. My suspicion is that the worn pads were worn for a long long time and the piston must have rusted a little and now that it is farther in, it is unhappy and occasionally under hard braking decides to stick.
My long term plan is to swap out the calipers with a set of boxster calipers that I have, but there are many time consuming things involved in that (5 lug rear conversion, 911 parking brake, etc, etc.etc...
Or I could catch a ride

I do have a extra 914 in the garage

old school, i see you also have the disease..
Guys - I suggested the "cultural center" to Thomas as the meeting place. I think that's what it is. It's painted green like a ranger station but it's got 3 parking lanes out front (I assume for school buses). When I was there today I didn't see an address. If you go north on Azusa (Hwy 39) from the 210 freeway you'll drive through old town Azusa (speed limit is 25) and eventually into the newer houses. As you get out of that community heading into the mountains the road turns right and the center is on the right after that bend. There's nothing past it on the right so it's hard to miss. If you go over a bridge you've gone too far.
Jim - Assume you'll probably come up the 605. The 605 ends at the 210. Take the 210 east, exit at Azusa and go north (towards the mountains).
...I wish I could be there...
When I was stationed at Norton, (1973), I use drive up to Mount Baldy, then west and then south on the very roads that are on your map. I use to hot shoe it through Big Bear and the Kern River Valley...I miss the moutains.
I suggest a run from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella and back....
Have fun....
Dave
This could be it. Or it could be a huge water tank. Or a HUGE strawberry stand.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Yup, that's it Elliot. It's right there. Looks like this was taken when it was still under consruction. You can see the parking lanes.
Here's a close up. Google earth says it's;
34'09'33.91" N
117'54'32.71" W
We should get there early. I'm not sure T H O M A S will be able to find it.
ahhhh.. it's the other strawberry stand.. ok i see it now
I would like to go if I can get a VR/electric charging issue worked out by then.
Hey the drive is tomorrow!! pre drive bump!
-Rob
For those of you coming from the West / Northwest; we're going to try and meet up at the LaTuna Canyon / 210 off ramp. There's a parking area on the South side of the freeway. Hopefully we'll be there around 7:30 - 7:45.
If you're coming from the North (i.e. 126, 5, or 14 from Palmcaster) the Santa Clarita crew is going to meet up earlier and drive Little Tujunga over the mountains to the 210. If you want to join us there we'll be meeting at 7am at the Shell Station off the 14 Fwy at Sand Canyon.
PM me if you want to join us so I know to look for you.
Question.....sort of off topic....
New rotors and pads bearings ect. on the car. Should I break in slowly .....do some driving tonight before this run?
I have stock set up so Hayes says to put at least 120 miles on it before "spirited braking"
Yous all thoughts.... Also is there a cell contact for tommorrow?
Rob
I got a spare seat,, but we might overheat and not finish,,,,,
PM me if anybody wants a ride.
-Rob
my cooler popped this morning!
be safe
I'm home and safe folks,,, 13 went up the hill,,,, 12 came back down. I didn't overheat,,, something worse. sorry to ruin a nice drive for everyone.
I'm sure my fellow 914 bros will be posting pics soon.
Whaaaaaaaaa,, I'm seriously bummed out!! (but alive!)
-Robert
Robert,
We are glad you are okay. We heard from the bikers that you had a tow with no problems. Quite honestly you are the luckiest guy on the face of the earth today.
Pics to follow.....a little faith doesn't hurt either. There just ain't no emoticon for what happened we were all a little dumbfounded. I live down the hill so just got home.
Gotta resize the photos... the resolution is too high. Great view of Mt. Baldy in the backround. These might become famous in the NARP World.
Rob
What happend, comon guys.... tell us !
Ok... So I hope these pics load. Absolutely beutiful day today in the Angeles Forest, and this drive was absolutely great. So we reach the top of the divide and Mt. Baldy Road narrows down from about 7,000 feet with some great winders towards the bottom.... I have been on this road before and no.....guard rails. Welll I take off in my 1.7 and take point....sixes behind me, it wasn't long before I succumbed to letting the braver pass. So they did.
Somebody joked at the top that we had 13 cars go up....
These pics just don't do justice to the 1,000 foot drop on the other side. Baldy is over 10,000 feet high btw for those who don't live in SO. Cal. It was a beutiful drive and fun. Robert is okay....thank God.
I post what I have.
Rob
Here are some more at the bottom.
Thomas car .....nice green.
I'm gonna be Fnn famous!! but I don't want this kind of fame!!
Let's put my FUBAR up to severe driver error in the heat of the moment. It was an excellent drive up to THAT point. My car pushed. when I was coming out of the turn.
-Rob
oh yeah,, on the way home my windshield blew off even though I rolled up the windows.
It was fun...I'm sure there will be other pictures. Robert's car was the first I had seen with a rotary motor in it....this is the other side of the berm. Hard to appreciate the drop.
Maybe it was some strange device of nature that it became perched on that rock like that....some type of wierd sacrafice to the 914 world?
Anyway all of us were glad he was okay.
Rob
W O W !!
i am very glad you are still with us.
Wow, unbelievable were you trying to jump something ? Geez if I was the passenger I dont know what would happen?
Wow!! Glad he's ok.
I just got home and wow what an eventful day. Sorry Rob about your car and really glad your ok and still with us. Man that was fun fast spirited driving.
Robert,
We are truly glad you are okay....seriously. Nobody was joking. Flesh and blood are not replacable. Time to find you another roller.
Glad you are ok.
You did it. Built your car and drove it.
12 months to rebuild it...rematch...
good to hear you are OK and sorry about your car rob, thank you to everybody for showing up to this event
Rob, We are glad to hear you walked away from this ! Here's another view of the car/rock...
The other side of the car/rock is about 1,000 ft drop.
Attached image(s)
You know the funny thing was.... was that AFTER we found out Rob was okay... everyone was trying to figure out HOW we could get that car off the rock and down the hill okay. We could save it. We are truly one of a kind.
Glad your OK!!!!! that is some picture and one we dont like to see for sure.
I have a 73 roller that is free to a good home. posted in the classified section with details. put your VINs on it.
U poop yer pants ?? Can't blame ya if you did. Glad you are o.k.
I'd go back in a big truck, grab that rock, bring it home and put it on my front lawn! If it wasn't there . . .
Sorry about your car; glad you walked away!
Rob, Oh Rob you’re my bro. But Dammmmmmm,
I truly hope we all take something from this its a fun run not a race. I stopped motorcycle ridding with clubs because every weekend out we where getting guys that just pushed way too much and had to be helicopter out. Rob you are one lucky guy and I am truly happy that you walked away. I can care less about the car. Take the parts and start again.
Yes I drive fast very fast but dirt on the roads and water runoffs are all apart of mountain driving. I know Rob you have been driving 914s for over 20 years so I am sure this was just freak luck. If I where you I would have toke a chunk of that rock home and next time I went to Vagas placed it on the table.
Glad your ok Thomas!! I'd never seen a 914 rock crawler before. Is that a rx-7 oil cooler i see? I call 1st dibs
FUCH! ... Glad to hear no one got hurt
... and if you need more than just a front cross-member, I've got a nice straight '72 5-lug roller here
Did the car get home?
Holy Shit!!!
That image doesn't show the steepness of the drop to the canyon floor. If it weren't for the rock ............ well, I need say no more.
Ya know I got to thinking about this and the way that the rotary was positioned in the car....interesting set up. I wonder if the weight distrubution had anything to do with the car pushing in those hard corners? Maybe another thread.
Rob, Im glad you are ok. There was a reason that boulder was there. It was horrifying to wind that corner and see your 914. As one of the bicyclist said "Woah!" I'm very sorry about your 914. I know you just got it running.
Now that Rob is done being the center of attention.... Did anybody get pictures from Lunch? Could somebody post the name of the "Village" and the name of the place we had lunch at? It was a neat place. Wish I could say the same for the service.
I had a great time. Glad I drove down. It was Beautiful weather and so was the scenery. I rode with Slits for his first run in the "Grey Ghost". I tell you what, that guy sure knows how to build teeners! Very smooth and comfortable ride. Not noisy (or smokey) and lots of horsepower.
p.s.... If someone has a picture with me in it could you please post it so it will show that I was there. Thanks.
I drove part of that road a few weekends ago with Phantom914 and just the sight of the dropoff made me slow down a lot. The dropoff is just amazingly steep. I've never seen a road with such a steep dropoff as some of the roads up there.
-Tony
Oh yea!!! Always an intense ride being a passanger with Slits!
We left the shop in Riverside about 8:45 and caught up with you guys at the top of the hill. Think how fun THOSE twisties were at that speed.

Thanks for the pics Jim. It was nice meeting everyone. Driving behind you on the way up actually gave me a chance to enjoy the scenery which was great. Gotta resize the pictures I have at the lodge. Good to know now that Thomas is the guy for my spare tranny. Definately want to go bigger on the engine...but for now my "lowly" four just runs to good.
Rob.....that's the other Rob.
Rob, if you need the front end of a 914, let me know.
We have a clean front end, if you can pick it up, it's yours.
Damn. If I can help, let me know. You have some luck man.
One of the many reasons I don't do these runs....too many faux paus'....glad everyone be OK.....
To the three people who have texted me to wish me sympathy, and others who might think this is my car, direct your sympathy to Robert (Rotary'14). I am fine, my car is fine, we are 500 miles North of this event.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...
Performance Driving School could save your life.
Yipes! Good grief, I am really glad that everyone got out okay.
