914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Jet-Hot coated engine fan case??? /4

Posted by: Mueller Mar 16 2004, 08:43 PM

I'm sending my header out to get coated, I had thought about getting the fan housing done at the same time....it would be the semi-bright silver finish...any reason not to????

why not the cylinders and the case? ( im pretty sure this is a bad idea....bud esplain to me why you engineers out there! ) i like to learn

the case "might" not be a real bad thing to coat, but the cylinders are a big no-no for this type of coating...

ceramic based coatings will trap and hold the heat inside of the cylinders, causing them to get even hotter which would of course transmit to the pistons and the heads.

it would be similar to putting a blanket over the cylinder

the reason i like the Jet-Hot is that they don't just simply spray the coating on, thier method uses a slurry (cream-of-wheat with too much milk) to coat the outside and the inside of the part

do just the outside of the case then..... wink.gif let us know how it goes!

jet hot is a heat "captive" sort of thing..keeps the exhaust gas hot... and within the pipes...therefore flowing more quickly

The coating works in two directions... say if you have a cold air source for the fan inlet.... if the fan housing is coated.. the cooling air would be from a nice cool source and no influence would be felt from the hot engine bay..

these coatings do work... to what degree needs to be proven

very good point Tim....I wonder if the coating would help the flow as well since it might be "smoother" than the cast aluminum????

magnesium alloy

really?? it seems pretty darn heavy to be magnesium.......it must be alloyed with mostly aluminum smile.gif

type 1- 3 cases be magnesium. IV's are aluminum (rumor has it that a couple were made in magnesium in europe tho)

the fan housing is definitely magnesium alloy, it oxidizes so fast!
