UPDATED INFO:
These dates are FIRM. May 13-16 is the event. Thursday is a 'bonus day', so if you can't make it, don't feel too bad and still come for Fri/Sat/Sun.

Thursday Evening
Check-in is open and we begin gathering on the roof of the ramp. Keg tap and official kick off of Eric Shea's Birthday... err... "the WCR 2010 Teeners in Thin Air".

Friday
Morning: optional short drive, tech sessions on subjects such as brakes, transmissions, alignment, wheel polishing, and more.
Afternoon: peoples choice show and shine.

Saturday
Morning: Targa Tahoe drive gathering on the ramp.
Evening: BBQ on the roof provided by WCR 2010 Teeners in Thin Air including raffle for sponsor donations, peoples choice car show awards.

Sunday
Check out and return to civilization.

Alternative local area activities include the following:

Fishing charters for groups of 4-9.
Excursion and Interpretive History Boat Trips on the Lake (Covered Cabin with Windows if you don't want to be on deck).
Golf on a world class PGA Course within walking distance of the hotel.
Gambling. Many hotels including the host hotel have world class casinos for you to try your chances and win or lose some cash.
Restaurants. The full range from 5Star to the lowest of bacteria holes.
Independent drives around Lake Tahoe. Takes all day and requires a stop for food but the view of the lake is breathtaking.
Photo opportunities. You can pretty much just keep tapping the shutter on your camera because the Lake and surrounding area are beautiful no matter which way you turn.
Zip Line Rides. One of the local ski resorts has a ride up on the chair lift and zip line down. We think this costs about $60 but it would be a heck of a thrill ride.

Lodging
Harvey's Lake Tahoe will be ground zero.

Harvey's will have a section of their parking structure blocked off for 914's and they have security 24/7. Harvey's is the highest ranked hotel in Tahoe according to tripadvisor.com. They have a great casino and I'm sure they will be stocked up with alcohol, not that any of you fine upstanding 914 World members drink of course

Expedia is having a sale for Harvey's right now...for the same price we would have received! I don't know how long this sale will last, however if you book 2 nights or more, the price comes out to be the same we would have gotten with the group rate. Simply search on Expedia for South Lake Tahoe for the dates (May 13th-16th) and you'll see the discount for Harveys.

The rates right now are $59/Thursday, $77/Friday and $97/Saturday. This averages out to $77/night if staying Thurs-Sunday... I would suggest booking sooner than later since this is a sale.

I just found an Expedia coupon code that will save $10/night. Just enter 10WINTER when you are checking out...just worked for me, $67/night average!!

Hey Folks,

We've been working on getting the WCR 2010 in Tahoe event details finalized. The current plan is to have a solid four day event starting on the evening of Thurs May 13th and ending on Sunday May 16th. These are our preferred dates but we need to make sure they don't conflict with any Sacramento Valley PCA region track events. We're relying on them to host and insure the auto-x in Tahoe, so we have to work around their calendar. We'll know if this works with their schedule once they have their 2010 calendar completed in January and we'll update everyone as soon as we know one way or the other.

These dates won't work for everyone, but please speak up now if you know of any conflicting Porsche related events that fall on this weekend. We'll take everything into consideration.

Lake Tahoe is ~4,850 ft. in altitude. In May it will probably be pretty cold, with a good possibility of snow keeping the campgrounds closed. The average temperature for Tahoe in May is a high of 61 and a low of 32.

If it ends up being a productive snow winter, you may need to count on hotel rooms, rather than camping.

I'm wondering the same thing; anyone else concerned about the weather? I recall being in Tahoe in May some years ago, and there was snow everywhere. Perhaps it was an exceptional snow year; the skiing was great as I remember.

Not slamming, just thought I'd bring it up as well.

Not at all concerned about the weather. Bring a jacket, it gets cool at night. Yes, there is often still snow on the ground at higher elevation but almost never snow falling.

I'd like to put together a list of fun activities we can do individually or as a group while we're in Tahoe. We're aiming to have an auto-x, but we're also going to have at least one day-drive. I need to know how long of a drive you're willing to endure. I was considering putting together a drive from South Lake Tahoe around just the East Shore of the lake, up and over Mt. Rose (9k') and then down into the valley and then back up into Virginia City:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=South+Lake+Tahoe,+CA&daddr=39.288608,-119.919891+to:Virginia+City,+Storey,+Nevada&hl=en&geocode=FfkSUgIdJC_Z-CnhT6XuiYWZgDGOkSP7Ri8b3Q%3B%3BFULRVwIdqUre-CnRr9rTqg-ZgDGpb1fcV9LaKQ&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1&sll=39.120472,-119.799042&sspn=0.634994,1.452942&ie=UTF8&ll=39.010648,-120.094299&spn=1.271959,2.905884&z=9

Or we could go the more traffic laden way and go further around the lake:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=South+Lake+Tahoe,+CA&daddr=39.138582,-120.143738+to:Mt+Rose+Hwy%2FNV-431+E+to:Virginia+City,+Storey,+Nevada&hl=en&geocode=FfkSUgIdJC_Z-CnhT6XuiYWZgDGOkSP7Ri8b3Q%3B%3BFSiDVwId3hLa-A%3BFULRVwIdqUre-CnRr9rTqg-ZgDGpb1fcV9LaKQ&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=9&via=1,2&sll=39.010648,-120.094299&sspn=1.271959,2.905884&ie=UTF8&z=9

Coming back we'd just zip down the other side of the mountain from Virginia City and head back via 50 through Carson City.

That's just one idea. If you don't care about Virginia City, then there are a lot of other cool day drives. Thoughts?

Posted by: ConeDodger Dec 11 2009, 02:23 PM

As for concerns about the weather: Living as close as I do to Tahoe and having it as my favorite destination I can tell you that there is always snow at the higher elevations. Trees tower hundreds of feet in the air and if the sun never shines there, the snow pack just melts so slowly it lingers for months. I have never seen snow up there past April and even then it is only flurries that melt within a short time.

As for concerns about the hotel. The target host hotel is kind of the red-headed stepchild of the South Lake strip. It is troubled and currently has a limitation on its gambling license but I am not concerned about this as there are three world class hotel casino operations within 100 steps of the hotel, they all have restaurants and buffet operations that are fantastic, and finally 914World guys just want to stand around in the parking lot until 2am and see who "that guy" will be this year. Past performances by Eric Shea, Jeff Hines, Jim Tabor, and Allan Miller have set the bar very high and I hope to someday be "that guy". biggrin.gif But, I am realistic enough to know that I will need these next few months to train and condition my liver for the events!

If you are considering camping, you should be an experienced camper as temperatures can drop to freezing late into the night. If a group of you camps, maybe you could get a cheap room to use for showers because no one wants to smell skank... biggrin.gif

I don't think not having an autocross will break the deal for 99% of you but we are trying to get the cooperation of Sacramento Valley Region of PCA for which I am a board member. They want to help but there is a possibility that a track organization will offer PCA a free parking lot at Infinion for an autocross that same weekend. In which case, we will probably not make their calendar because I am just one vote and pure profit is a powerful motivation.

Thanks for giving us the time to work out problems and thanks for supporting the event with your attendance!

Let's get this party started with a green flag dropping!

So I've decided to go to this thing.
I have two questions.
1. I haven't seen hotel rates yet and I'm guessing it's a little too soon for that. I'd like to get my reservations as early as possible. I noticed there was a hotel already chosen but I didn't see that there was a special rate or anything. Should I wait or make my reservation now?

2. I don't have a super nice 914 like most of you guys. It was a basket case when I bought it and I haven't had it a year yet so it's far from completion. I'll be in this ugly thing pictured below. It's looks may improve a bit by then but I doubt it. Count on the ugly ass skunk stripes to be off of the hood, though. So, will I be able to park it with the rest of your nice rides or will I be out on the street with the toyotas?

Posted by: ConeDodger Dec 23 2009, 02:18 PM

All the rates at Tahoe are pretty 'special' right now... I wouldn't worry about it. Occupancy is down, resorts are closing, the recovery hasn't gotten there just yet.

The weekend may change too...

I have seen much uglier cars front and center. We love them all...

Search Horizon South Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe airport is very close though major airlines don't fly in there. You may consider Reno though, Someone can pick you up.

Is someone looking into a group rate deal ?

Posted by: biosurfer1 Dec 24 2009, 10:18 AM

We are still looking into a group rate. The nice part about the Horizon is they said they would block off a certain amount of rooms for the group and you'll just have to tell them you are with us. We don't have to commit to a certain amount of rooms before hand. One of the nice perks of having it in a location where there are a lot of hotel options...

Posted by: RoadGlue Dec 24 2009, 10:48 AM

But please don't reserve a room yet. We're still waiting on the PCA SVR to give us the thumbs up on our dates. We'll know sometime in January for sure.

Rob, do you know when in Jan that they'll have their 2010 calendar announced?

Randy,
We will know the calendar Bob and Frederick intend to present sometime early in January. I will be on them to inform me as it is formed. The actual meeting where the board will vote to approve that calendar is February 4th. In most cases, this is a rubber stamp vote. My impression is that the board can have contentious debate but once a motion is made it is approved. The competition calendar, particularly the Drivers Education component makes SVR a good portion of their budget. If Bob and Frederick recommend it, I have confidence it will be approved. As I have said, my biggest concern is that Trackmasters has offered us the paddock lot for free for three events this coming year. If one of those is in May on our dates or before/after, I would not blame Bob and Frederick for choosing to go with Trackmasters - and not come to Tahoe. The reason is that Tahoe is a long drive and involves costs even if the site is free.

Bob is sympathetic and, I believe wants to have the event with us. The problem is he has no vote as he is a chair not a board member. He has no vote. If Frederick agrees with Bob, I have a vote and the board follows Frederick. This means the key is what does Frederick want to do.

The short answer is, we will know what they want to do in January and February 4th it will be written in stone.

Again, not having an autocross is not the end of the world. Most Rambles don't.

As far as I am concerned those dates are the dates. But, that is not my decision. I believe the intent of the planning group is to be flexible as a carrot on a stick for the SVR people but if they (SVR) decide to go with Trackmasters in May I do not believe they would have a second event the same month, especially one that involves towing a trailer all the way to Tahoe. Too much effort for an all volunteer organization.

Sorry to leave everyone hanging, but we were just trying to confirm some stuff before announcing the dates. Unfortunately we weren't able to secure a lot for the auto-x that met the SVR's minimum size requirements, so we're going to have to scrap that idea. That's OK though, as we'll have plenty of other fun activities to keep everyone entertained!

Dates Confirmed:
Thurs May 13th and ending on Sunday May 16th.

Hang tight on hotel reservations. Now that we don't need the Horizon's lot, we're going to see if we can score a better deal elsewhere. We'll try to have something together by Mon/Tue of next week.

For those who really care, we were able to secure a lot but it was only going to be 175 yards by 100 yards and PCA wanted more. Otherwise, I suspect it would have been way too much of a 914 course for the general taste.

There are many great drives to and from the Tahoe area. You could head North on 89 and go to Susanville, very pretty cow country with winding roads. You can go East of Reno to the Reno-Fernley Raceway and do some lap time if you are licensed. The Mt Rose Hwy from Incline to Reno is quite fun, as well as 50 to 28 from S.lake to Incline. Great vistas and smooth turns should be had by all. Now I just need a 914 again.

Not yet Jim but since we have let the autocross go, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how low they are. I am not sure if one of us is looking in to this. I will tell you what I know. The organization that we shadow (SVR-PCA) is Trackmasters. They have quit using Reno-Fernley due to a severe deterioration of the track surface...

Beyond that, I do not know if we are looking in to it. Keep in mind though that we are a virtual entity. We have to piggy-back on to another organization with the ability to buy insurance in order to do that. My only relationship in this regard is SVR-PCA and Trackmasters.

Sometimes you can work this out and sometimes you cannot. In Sonoma we piggy-backed with ESCA and had an autocross. Others have done other things but WE as 914World only virtually exist and this is a complication we can only sometimes work around.

How does she like spending 72 hours with a bunch of car guys, looking at, talking about, and showing off cars? There is booze involved, so usually that makes the situation a little easier. If you/she thinks it's going to be anything but all cars all the time, you're joking yourself. happy11.gif

We've got this shindig on the calendar! driving.gif

I may have missed it but when can we expect the specifics on hotels etc.?

It's been a few years since we've been to Tahoe but the last time was spectacular!

I know the competition will be tough but I've been training hard for the "That Guy" Award. smilie_pokal.gif

Thanks to all for organizing this event. pray.gif

I am in the process of pitting hotel's against each other to try and get the best rate, and give us options.

So far, Harvey's is in the lead:) More info to follow very soon!

Harvey's cheapest On-Line average rate for the 13th -16th is $102.33 I don't know if this includes parking. Some places I've been lately have made parking a profit center.

Posted by: biosurfer1 Feb 4 2010, 03:27 PM

Thanks Jim but we are contacting the hotels directly and the good news is, we have received numbers lower than that.

Parking is free in Tahoe, we are also working on getting a section of lot blocked off just for us.

Good camping spots in the area that we could take over smile.gif

Lake Tahoe is ~4,850 ft. in altitude. In May it will probably be pretty cold, with a good possibility of snow keeping the campgrounds closed. The average temperature for Tahoe in May is a high of 61 and a low of 32.

If it ends up being a productive snow winter, you may need to count on hotel rooms, rather than camping.

Eric

Lake elevation is 6225.
I lived at Northshore for two years
I have seen it snow every month of the year.
Raw data for May.
Max Temperature high 78 °F av. 59 °F low 32 °F
Mean Temperature high 60 °F av. 45 °F low 25 °F
Min Temperature high 42 °F av 30 °F low 16 °F

There WILL still be snow at lake level for those of you who are thinking about camping.
Doesnt bother Miss Mari or myself, just need more antifreeze! drunk.gif

After many phone calls and emails, we have our host hotel for the event! drunk.gif

Harvey's Lake Tahoe will be ground zero.

Bad news: After talking with the hotel meeting coordinator, in order to get their group discount, we would have to agree to a minimum # of rooms and be on the hook if we did not fill them. After the fiasco with Mark a couple years ago, we will not agree to that.

The great news: Expedia is having a sale for Harvey's right now...for the same price we would have received!

Harvey's will have a section of their parking structure blocked off for 914's and they have security 24/7. Harvey's is the highest ranked hotel in Tahoe according to tripadvisor.com. They have a great casino and I'm sure they will be stocked up with alcohol, not that any of you fine upstanding 914 World members drink of course beerchug.gif

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here and one of the planners will respond.

Only 14 weeks until 914's by the Lake!

EDIT: I just found an Expedia coupon code that will save $10/night. Just enter 10WINTER when you are checking out...just worked for me, $67/night average!!

Well, I was originally going to bunk up at Mike's house for the weekend but decided I didn't want to be left out of the fun. Plus I might decide to drink and there's NO WAY I'm driving after that....I'm a light weight. So my new plan is to possibly bunk at Mike's on Wednesday night and Sunday night since I only rented a room for Thursday through Saturday.\

OR, I might decide to drive to Ball Sac on Wednesday and visit some of my old Air Force pals that never left after we got out of the service. Oops. I meant Sacramento. But probably not since I've already spent time in Sac County and the military jail at Beale AFB......I was just a kid then. beerchug.gif

The trip for me I think, will be more about the drive down and back, than the time spent hanging out in a parking lot. Anyone is welcome to drive down with us, Prolly leaving Wed morning and taking the better part of Wed and Thurs to get there. Cruising down thru eastern Oregon and into NV and CA
I can post a route at a later date.

It could snow. You could also be abducted by aliens and experimented on but I doubt either will happen. There will however be snow on the ground in areas that get little sunlight right down to the lake level... It will be cool at night and comfortable during the day. Fun will be had - even if we are all abducted by aliens... biggrin.gif

Any clues into the schedule of events yet?

I'm at that distance where I could drive in from Reno... But would rather stay at the hotel for the right nights.

Thursday, bonus day, watch the arrivals (this is some of the best!)

Friday, Saturday.... Which will be activities near the hotel vs. away - like a drive/tour?

I know it's too early to expect a schedule yet, but just wanted to ask and see if there's anything sticking to a potential agenda yet.

Heads up - Room availability is likely to be changing... I was unable to book the cheaper room because they were sold out one of the nights. The good news is with the Expedia code I got the "Premium" for the price of the "Classic" direct.

Unless I can eat it, I dont want to fish for it. I will be following crowds to what ever. Booze is a good thing smile.gif

I'm a 21 y/o, so it kinda goes without saying I'll be following the booze.

Posted by: ConeDodger Feb 10 2010, 09:55 AM

Sounds like a little interest in a group table at the comedy club... We can look into that.

There are other things to do on the lake as well Jamie, you and your wife may enjoy one of the excursions. The boat takes you around the lake to see the sights and tells you of the history. It gets you over to the castle everyone sees from the road on the
West side of the lake. When you find out the castle is actually a glorified outdoor patio it is kind of a hoot!

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 10 2010, 12:10 PM

I like comedy. You can go see where they shot Bonanza. Other than drinking and gambling, is there any WCR planned events???

Posted by: RoadGlue Feb 10 2010, 12:16 PM

We're still working on the details (we've got three months). There will absolutely be some day drives, possible hot springs, etc, etc, etc. More details soon.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 10 2010, 12:33 PM

Awesome, Randy. I know things will be taken care of, particularly if you are involved. Hot springs are kick ass, but I wish we had more women folks and less old men for that trip poke.gif

It's going to be cheap. We're not looking to make money and we just need to know that all expenses are covered. Name tags, t-shirts (which we may just have people order prior to the event) and at least one catered meal. I can only guesstimate that it's going to be around or less than $50/head. We'll try and get that nailed down shortly. I hate putting numbers out there because if it's more you're all going to hang me. smile.gif

I didn't get around to booking my hotel (6 days ago) till now! Son of a bitch it went up in price!

5/13: $119.00 $89.25 per night
5/14: $139.00 $104.25 per night
5/15: $149.00 $111.75 per night
Taxes & service fees $10.17 per night
Coupon -$30.00

Amount charged for hotel reservation $305.76

Regardless, we are there Thursday afternoon! Now time to get the Teener going or take the Jeep?

Dr. Evil or Jakeodoule, are you guys coming down 97 to 139 to 395 through Susanville?

Posted by: JRust Feb 13 2010, 12:23 PM

Glad your going to make it Drew. We are booked Thursday too. Maybe we need to hook up to caravan down. Sounds like Mike & Jake are going through earlier. Anyway be happy to meet up somewhere in route on Thursday. Either way I can't wait piratenanner.gif

The price hasn't gone up, it appears they have sold out of the classic rooms for Friday night, so the only ones left are the Tower rooms which are more expensive.

I'll keep my eye out for more coupons or better deals...FYI for those out of the area, MontBleu is across the street and very nice. Right now they are about the same price as Harvey's, and you can still use the same coupon!

Oh, the itinerary didn't say anything like that? I'll have to look at it again. The wife will be happy about that! We (she) saw the tower room and wanted that instead. She's more like a hilton girl and I'm a Motel 6 kind of guy. She also isn't the most socialable. It's the initial meeting is what's hard but after she's golden. We would be interested in a few excursions and maybe the comedy club thing. She is excited to be going and so am I! It's going to be fun!!

Hey Drew.
Not sure of our route yet. But prolly leave thursday morning and get to southern Oregon or northern Cali. Then cruise down the rest of the way Thursday.
Depending on weather, we may come down the valley and then over Crater Lake.
Or we may go down through eastern Oregon through Lakeview.
Thats a Loong drive for one day though. We'll see.

Jake, I will be buying your beer for that long weekend! Probably will leave around 10ish A.M. on Thursday or when Jamie says he can be here? Supposedly a 7+ hour drive from K.Falls if I go down 139 to 395.

If you come down 58 from Eugene to get to 97 watch out when you come to Oakridge. I think you may know that It's one of Oregon's biggest speed traps! It's there best revenue next to the McDonalds and Dairy Queen. Looking forward to the weekend. It should be a blast!

Right after that last shot, you come into these corners. Laguna Seca has nothing on Tahoe's "corkscrew!" This is not far from South Tahoe where our WCR is based.

I'm getting sorta bummed about the class schedule next quarter. Not sure how WCR will work for me, maybe have to bunk with another member here, and maybe take my rsx since I might not have the teener with me (stays at my parents while I'm at school).

If anyone has extra room in their hotel let me know. I'll have a better idea of the logistics soon, but yea.

Time to announce the registration fees for WCR Teeners at Tahoe!

Not quite ready for you to send your money so registration is not open yet, but we wanted you to know what the event itself will cost! So, yes - we know we haven't told you where to send checks or Paypal. Watch for that later, when we open registration!

Individual registration from the opening of registration until TAX DAY - April 15th will be: $50 individual - $30 additional for each family member who will participate in the event. After April 15th, $60 individual and $35 additional for each family member who will participate. After May 1st, registration goes up to $70 individual and $40 additional for each family member who will participate.

This gives you a little incentive to register early.

We define "family member who will participate in the event" as someone you bring that you expect us to feed at included meals and BBQ's and such...

WE TOLD YOU IT WOULD BE CHEAP!

Opening night meet and greet. At least one, and probably two drives, A show and shine on the ramp, tech sessions with experts are planned and we are working on commitments, we have a BBQ vendor who will have his wares on the ramp throughout the event. One of his meals will be catered, the rest will be out of your pocket (our way of making sure you don't have to eat at high buck restaurants for every meal - unless you want), excursions to Chair lift up - Zip line down, Comedy Club with Louie Anderson, Chartered fishing, Golf (PGA level course across the back of the lot next to the Lake, oh, and gambling biggrin.gif .

For your money you get the meet and greet party and a catered meal and some goodies TBA... Bring money if you want to do lots of "other" stuff...

Eric

Just to clarify. 4850 is the elevation at the bottom of the lake. Surface elevation is just a little above 6200'. I used to live there and have seen snow every month of the year. Bring extra warm gear if you plan to camp. shades.gif

It looks like Ed won't be there this year due to a schedule conflict but...
I am trying real hard to fit this event into my schedule. My wife is on board with it.
We haven't taken a real vacation together in years.
I looked at flights last night and can get a good price into SFO Wednesday or Thursday night, with return flight leaving late Sunday night.
I have a nephew in San Jose with a newborn baby that we would like to visit, maybe Sunday for dinner before heading home.
If we came out Wednesday I would want to visit a winery or two in Napa valley before heading east on Thursday and maybe visit McMark's shop in the morning first if that works for him. On the map it looks very do-able.

WTF.gif
I followed the Expedia link this evening and the special deal ain't so special now!
Average per night is up to $115+. So much for a group rate. sad.gif
I already bought plane tickets so it isn't a deal breaker but it does kinda suck that we will have to pay $40+ per night more than others at the same gathering.

Chris...there was no group rate. We had looked into it and they needed a solid number of rooms required and if we didnt fill 90% of those rooms, whoever signed the agreement would be on the hook for rooms. After the fiasco at WCR Mark had to go though, there was no way we were signing anything.

Tahoe has lots of options as to where to stay and several hotels that are within a block of Harveys so we figured it would beter for people to make their own reservations.

The expedia deal I found was more than a month ago and was just a heads up for everything looking to book early. Those deals come up now and again and I will try to keep people updated on any I find.

Posted by: Racer Chris Mar 17 2010, 07:01 PM

I understand Brett, and I certainly wouldn't want the same thing to happen as the above mentioned fiasco. I was just venting.
I'm looking around right now and it looks like we can get a room at the Ambassador Motor Lodge for as low as $58 night. The Ambassador appears to be only a couple blocks away, across the state line.
Besides, if Mary wants she can pay for the room at Harvey's. I'm a bit cheaper than that.

Posted by: jim_hoyland Mar 17 2010, 08:07 PM

FYI- Harrvey's has been running ads on local cable in So Cal for rates comparable to the early ones. Maybe even less.... smile.gif

Posted by: Rand Mar 17 2010, 08:58 PM

I warned a month and a half ago that room rates/availability are changing big time. If you haven't booked a room, better get on it. Tahoe is an amazing destination. The longer you wait, the higher the rate. Wait too long and hotels may be sold out.

Rand is right. I just went to the Peppermill in Reno for a concert and the hotel was sold out. Rand told me that it was sold out for 8 weeks!

Schedule details have been a bit thin so far. I know Thursday is a "bonus" with just the meet and greet that evening, but would like to know more about Friday's plan. Is Friday a "full day" so that folks should show up before Friday morning so as not to miss out on something?

Driving time from Flagstaff is 12+ hours and I can probably do it in one day, but it would be helpful to know some additional schedule info so that I can decide and figure out if Linda is going to want to come along.

Posted by: montoya 73 2.0 Mar 18 2010, 02:23 PM

I told my wife it is a vacation so anytime away from home, kids and the usual crap is good time! We don't have to be there all the time because there are alot of other things to do. Other than the BS'ing, Drinking, BBQing and the drives there is another 14 hours of me and her time! Besides she really doesn't want me around all the time? After a few hours she will tell me to go play with the other kids so it works out great!!! She can use some alone time to do what she wants.

Just got off the phone with Harvey Weidman of Weidman Wheels in Oroville CA. I thought I should let you guys know that Harvey has confirmed that he will be there and will do a Tech Session on Porsche Wheels and 914 Wheels. If you have never heard or spoken to Harvey, you should know, no one knows more about Fuch wheels and Porsche wheels.

Other tech sessions include Andy Schmidt on string alignment, Mark Debernardi on something mysterious and dark, Mike Lesniak on 901 Transmissions, and possibly, Eric Shea on brakes.

Registration and the schedule of events will be announced immenently. Register early!

I'm interested in hearing where people are staying other than Harveys, and if anyone has a recommendation either pro or con regarding other hotels in the neighborhood.
My wife and I won't spend any amount of time in the casinos. We're more interested in outdoor activities and sightseeing when not involved with the group. All the online info from expedia, etc. has narrowed it down but I'm still a bit lost as to where we will stay, and I want to have our reservations made by this weekend.

My wife Nancy and I are registered/paid! smilie_pokal.gif And we're already set up at Harvey's.

We lived on the north shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe City) from 2000-04, so we know the Tahoe Basin pretty well. I'm sure Nancy would like to participate in at least one day hike, and there's a great rock-n-dirt one off Highway 89 / Luther Pass toward Markleeville. We could easily spend 2-4 hours on that hike, depending on how far you wanna go. Another sweet (granite) hike is the Eagle/Velma Lakes trail near Emerald Bay; since it is a west-shore location, it will probably have more snow than Luther Pass. Both of these locations are a ~30 minute drive from Harvey's, and either will provide sweeping views of Lake Tahoe. Let me know if you're interested.

As long as I brought this up, a little data for you guys driving cross country with your 4 cylinders. My car is wired and gauged for CHT readings. When I drive normally in traffic with the Raby kit motor the CHT is usually around 275 F. That is until you go to fifth gear. In fifth gear the temperature rises by 50 F. or so. Now with a stockish 2 liter the CHT is about 50 F. higher than the Raby kit motor. So just driving around you sit at about 300 F. Go to 5th gear at highway speed and your temperature rises to 350 F. These temperatures are at a fairly cool ambient of 70 F. and are compensated, so they are actual temperatures.

The take home message is if you are on the highway in high ambient temperatures and in fifth, be aware of your oil levels and try to spend some time in forth gear once in a while. I suspect you are ok having your temperatures rise by 50 F. but absolutely do not forget to downshift when you go up a grade.

You guys with stock exhaust will have higher CHT. Fan speed seems to have the greatest impact on CHT, but don't let your oil levels drop!

Jake would have to comment on whether that is hot or not. I suspect it is quite normal for a probe located under the #3 spark plug collar. I do not have a separate cooler and would not have it hooked up to this motor if I did. As I said, fan speed seems to be the biggest contributing factor. I suspect additional oil or an oil cooler would have some small impact but not that dramatic. Any discussion beyond this should probably go to a separate thread. idea.gif

Posted by: RoadGlue Mar 22 2010, 12:57 PM

There's a temp thread started by Jake somewhere here. smile.gif

Speaking of hot temps... for those of you coming from the east and are headed to South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 50 (through Carson City), be advised that the HWY is steep, long and has fast speed limits. The last time I took a 914 up that hill I had to down shift and hold her around 30 mph to keep from over heating. I was monitoring both head and oil temps. Those of you that just have oil temp gauges are missing out on a world of information too. The head temps spiked well before the oil temp gauge showed trouble. Just something to keep in mind. That's the only road I've had trouble on up there and ymmv. smile.gif

51 days to WCR 2010 "Teeners at Tahoe"

Time to plan your route, find out who in your area is going so you can caravan.

If all of the beauty at Lake Tahoe was not enough reason to bring a digital camera - we have decided that the drive around the lake on Friday morning will also be a competitive photo rally. You need a partner and you will be given a list of things to get a picture of. No slamming on the brakes or going back is allowed. Besides, if you did slam on the brakes you would have a teener stuffed up your tailpipe! blink.gif If you do that and manage to get all the pictures and are judged to have taken the best pictures - by virtue of your photo rally performance and getting into an accident with two Teeners you could win two awards! The Photo Rally and That Guy!

Some of the things you need a picture of will be geographic and specific. Others will be random and quite possibly not come up. For instance, and this will be one of the rally photos you are assigned to get - A Porsche coming the other way. Imagine the Porsche owners surprise to see 40 Teeners coming the other direction and they're all taking pictures of him! lol-2.gif

Michelle and I are seeing if we can get a couple of days off so we can attend. Gotta do a little more work on the new 914 before I'll drive it that far as well. I'm thinking we'll make it.

FYI everyone...expedia is having another sale right now, for 48 hours most hotels in the area are 30-40% off. Horizon, which is next door to Harveys is $63/night! Act Fast!

Anyone going Ziplining? GF wants to go (I'll be watching..)

I may go ziplining in Tahoe. We're going on a zipline canopy tour while in Mexico in a few weeks, so I'll decide when we get back. smile.gif

So were trying to event plan and it looks like most of them are either summer or winter. Is there going to be snow on the ground (not the roads) for winter events or should we be looking at summer events??

There's a chance some of the slopes could still be open, but I wouldn't hold your breath. It's really an in between season up there. Too cold to swim, too warm to ski. Hopefully this means that the crowds won't be there either. smile.gif

As I have said before it will be cool to cold at night and warm to sort of hot during the day. We will see snow in the shadowed areas on the ground and from plows but flying snow is a rarity and wouldn't last long. Bring a jacket, you will need it at night on the ramp.

I toyed with the idea of bringing both, but the red one just isn't WCR worthy yet...although it's coming along nicely. It's biggest trip so far is just around town--jusn't isn't on the priority list right now in my life.

Everyone wants to see the automatic!! We don't care if it's not perfect yet. smile.gif

You should seriously have both cars set up to use the towbar. Then if you ran into any trouble, just swap cars. Built-in backup! piratenanner.gif

It's snowing and downright nasty here at the lake right now! Should melt fast at lake level. Alpine Meadows will be open Fri-Sunday for the last days of the season. Bring your gear, it has been very good riding.

I'm almost done with my new bell crank linkage and I already like it 100 fold over the hex bar and I haven't even started it yet. I can tell adjustments will be much easier.

Now to fab up a throttle cable bracket, do some tuning and head to the lake!

The "Dynamic Duo" will open up a can of whoop-ass on you all.

Honestly... yesterday was the "Blondest" day I've had in a long time.

1st Time - Burned through the reservation so quickly that I didn't realize the "Cookie Jar" kept a RNO -> SLC route in there... I booked the first trip backward.

2nd Time - Well, you know this story. I swear I triple checked everything (except for that little AM/PM part)

I'll tell you this... Orbitz ROCKS. They canceled my flight "both" times without a fuss. I went to Brazil last month on Travelocity and they suck. You call their customer support and it's a bunch of ya-hoo's in India that leave you on hold and don't give a $hit. Had to write to the BBB in TX to get the $100 back that they owed me.

I think everyone is in for a great time at Tahoe and is it is well worth the trip to this event! Several years ago we attended a Lotus Regional Meet and had a ball. I must get my 914 finished this year and attend on of these events.

When we lived in Nor-Cal full time we enjoyed Tahoe many times over a forty plus years and the weather should be cool with snow around you. The gambling area has changed somewhat but it should still be great. Tahoe is one of the areas I miss in California and will be going through there in June.

I think the event has been planned very well and should give everyone a great time.

Wish we could attend this year but the "retirement commitments" always rear up and disrupt any long term planning. In other words, we are on extended travel in the U.S. for the balance of the year, hope to live fulltime in Nor-Cal next year, and be traveling some overseas.

Everyone have a great time!

All the final details are dropping into place. Thursday night in the lot with the gang will have PMB Performance providing and tapping a keg. Friday morning we will have the Loop the Lake Drive and if you have a passenger be sure to bring a camera because we have the Photo Rally where you will be given a list of 30 things to photograph + Best Photo contest. Saturday morning we have the Targa Tahoe Drive which will be longer and perhaps spirited as it follows some of the roads traversed by the Markleville Death Ride which is an annual bicycle ride held up here in Tahoe each year. Mixed in we have a People's Choice Car Show and seminars on Porsche Wheels with Harvey and Al Weidman, Transmissions with Mike Lesniak, Rust Repair Welding with Mark Debernardi, String Alignment with Andy Schmidt, and last but not least, Brakes with Eric Shea.

If you haven't registered it isn't too late! Make your plans and join us at WCR2010 Teeners at Tahoe.

For those of you who are wondering about the weather - the average high during WCR2010 Teeners at Tahoe is expected to be 64 degrees. The average low is something you will want to pay attention to if you are a ramp rat and want to spend the late evenings drinking and chatting... The average low will be just north of freezing at 38 degrees. Now since we plan on being on top of the ramp which is a large mass of concrete that will have absorbed heat all day, that might not be as big a problem as it sounds. Bottom line, bring a jacket and some gloves for the late night non-event of drinking and bullshitting on the ramp... drunk.gif

There is a 10% chance of precipitation on Saturday and you will probably be leaving Tahoe on Sunday under cloudy sky.

What about car trailers & tow vehicles....any idea where they need to go or are they stored near our cars?

I think the take off ramp is located on the waters edge of the lake and the landing ramp is the one located on the right. Hopefully the lights will still be on when "That Guy"decides his car is fast enough to clear the gap.

Although I could be wrong so you're better checking with one of the organizers to be sure.

After point F on the caravan, you can go directly on route 50 or take the longer twisties route as planned. Is anyone going to try to keep-up with the carvan teeners that is towing on the "twisty" backside route? driving.gif

88 normally has some traffic and not all that many passing areas. I imagine we'll stop at some of the pull outs too, so if you got lost in the dust you'd be able to catch up from time to time. Really though, I don't see it being a race up the mountain, though I'm not leading the group. smile.gif

Anyone ever stay at Harveys? If you have a choice when you check-in, what block of rooms would be more desirable for the WCR?

The place is like a city; I'd like to know too.

Here's the best I can do. We'll be meeting at the top of the parking structure, but trucks/trailers will probably not be allowed up there, so you'll be parking behind the structure.

OK, I'm an idiot. I knew WCR was the 3rd weekend of the month yet the calendar in my head only saw four weekends in May. I knew I had other things the last and next to last weekends so haven't paid too close attention to all things WCR. But in talking to Computers4Kids yesterday I suddenly realized there was an extra full weekend in May and I had to mentally rearrange my internal calendar. The clouds parted and I realized that I was free for the WCR weekend!

It's too late to plan vacation from work, but I am now registered and will be arriving Saturday morning. Pending unforseen circumstances we will be driving the 914. Hopefully I haven't used up my quota of troublefree miles since in the last month or so we have taken the car to Sacramento (Conedodger's coffee & donut Porsche reunion), Sonoma (McMark's Original Customs), Las Vegas (visit the kids) and Visalia (Computers4Kids).

Looking forward to meeting everyone else!

I got some sad news this morning. One of the best friends of Harvey Weidman has passed away. These two have been friends for decades and the man was as important to the Southern California car scene in its infancy as Harvey is to the Porsche world. Harvey will be unable to attend as he is going to be going to the funeral in Southern California on Friday. In his place, his brother Al who started the wheel business will be talking on Porsche wheels and the history and culture of Porsche wheels. The lot will be filled with examples of Al and Harvey's work. My condolences to Harvey on the loss of his friend.

I'm not going to bring them. I'm going to buy those $300 sets from the side of the road up there. Lucky for me the weather man says 0% chance of snow for the rest of the week.

I doubt I have the clearance for chains in the rear with 205/55/15 on stock 2.0 fuchs. I don't think they'll be needed anyways.

Did take a 914 up to Tahoe in the middle of winter back in the late 90's. Had to run skinny wheels and tires off my friend's bug. Lot of fun! Even drove around with the top off while it was snowing. smile.gif

We're down to just 2 days! WCR2010 Teeners at Tahoe is right around the corner...

So once again, I checked the forecast this morning and I find that light snow is falling in South Lake Tahoe even as I type this. But that is no problem! The rest of our stay is forecast as mid-60 degree highs and high-30's for lows. We will see standing snow and the roads will likely have some melt water on them. Bring a jacket and some gloves and you will be very comfortable.

Totally ready! This morning I made one good distributor out of two bad ones stuck it in and tuned it by ear... Got it very close and drove the 80 miles to McMark's shop. Randy and Mark were chillin' and we finished making up the awards, and tuned my car to within an inch of perfect. On the drive home she had a CHT 50 degrees cooler than any I have previously noted. The engine had more power and wanted to go like the wind!

I hope Jim and Mary drive it up with the group drive because it would be a shame to waste the trip up on a trailer!

Geoff

Mary and I are bringing hiking boots, so if you want some company on a short trip up the mountainside we are up for it. 2-4 hours sounds just about right!
We are staying at the Montbleu and will be arriving late Thursday evening for registration.

Hopefully there will still be a little beer in the keg. beer3.gif
Our plane leaves in 3 hours, landing at SFO after midnight.
A number of activities planned in the south bay area before heading to the mountains.

Funny, we just hiked above Markleeville last weekend. From Grover Hot Springs National Park, to some awesome waterfalls. (Don't have the better pics with me... These don't do the falls justice. There were several more sections to them.) Highly recommend this hike.
