914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How do you insert a web link in a thread?

Posted by: bobhasissues Dec 13 2009, 03:46 AM

Just tried to post a couple of links in a reply.
They appear as text and not actual links to the websites.
How do you insert a link?

I just copy and paste (From my browser it always works), some make it fancy with a bit of code, I forget how to do that.

here's a test: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=102096

Here's what I was taught. Go to the site you want to "copy". Highlight the address, it will be in blue, press control (ctrl) and "C" (copy) at the same time.....then go to where you want to post it and press control and "V" and it should come up. Make sure when you "paste" it that there is a space after the last thing you typed in or on a line by itself. Hope this helps......

Ok, now lets get fancy (I do what Mark and jt914 said), but how do you turn the link into a word in the text which serves as a link. Example: people who know more than I about computers tell me to go "here" and when I click on here it is the link.
Someone tell me how to do that please.

Go to "Add Reply", not "Fast Reply". Look for the link icon and follow the directions. It's pretty simple.

If you don't know which icon it is, it is the one with the chain "link" as the picture of the icon. Usually hovering over an icon will pop up some text to describe the icon. The link icon has pop up text "Add Link".

Go to the website you want to link to, and copy the URL (web address) starting with http.

When you're typing a reply, type the text string that you want to make into a hyperlink. (You can really type your whole reply and go back to insert the hyperlinks when you're done typing.)

Highlight the words that you want to turn into a link. Then click the button that looks like this:Attached Image

You'll get a pop-up window that asks for the Web address. Paste (CTRL+V) the web address that you copied earlier. Click OK.

That automatically inserts the HTML tags to make your text into a link.

In this example, I want http://www.google.com to be my link.

If you preface anything with http:// in a forum reply it will automatically be a link regardless whether it's valid or not.

For example:

If you just type in www.914world.com, it's not a link as you can see. Even though it is a valid link as is. If you were to copy and paste that into a browser it would take you to the web site. If I type 914world.com it doesn't appear as a link either despite the fact that it is also a legitimate web address. But if I type http://914world.com , it's automatically added as a link in the forum post. Notice I didn't even include the www in that link. Simple yeah?

BTW, if you do it this way it will appear as a link in your reply regardless whether you use, "Fast Reply" or not.

Also, if you go in and edit your reply afterwards, you will see that the forum software automatically converted your text into the following form (using my example above):

CODE
[url=http://914world.com]http://914world.com[/url]
