As the title says, what did you trade, if anything, when you bought your 914?
Most interested in buyers of brand new 914's, but let's hear from all.
And, do you remember (assuming you didn't pay cash) what your payments were?
I traded a very rusty 65 Beetle, with 180k miles on it (got 300 for it!), and put another $1200 down. My payments for 36 months were just under $100/month. Paid it off in 18 months.

Probably worth more than any 914-4 right now. Definately worth more than "that" 914 (poor thing didn't have a rear fog light).
In '76 my Dad bought my '74 and retired his '69 Ford Country Squire Wagon with a 429.
In '08, I swapped a Boxster for the racer.

Shame on you Eric. I would not trade one of my guitars for anything (they are not as expensive as the ones you mentioned, though).
I sold my 82 Ford Escort for $400 and added $1000 cash. This was in 96-97.
I paid cash for... Of course it was 2002 not 1975... If it had a rear fog light I would have needed a loan of course.

In 1972 I traded a 1970 Toyota Hylux Pickup and some cash, as a down payment, for a 72' blood orange 'Dealer Demo' from Pomona Porsche. The car was lowered to the ground with a bumble bee stripe across the rear quarter panels and trunk lid behind the rear tires. It was used to shoot a commercial at the old Ontario Speedway. Never saw the commercial so who knows. I think my payments for the balance were $112 a month for three years. Price of the car.....$5200 off the showroom floor.

I Traded a Rover 3.5 all aluminum v8 and the 5 speed trans out of a Rover SD-1(was going to do a mgb V8 conversion) and $1200 cash. That was way back in March of 2009. Now I have around $6500 invested (engine rebuild, and hellhole refurb) and will be driving it hopefully shortly after The new year!
As most of you know by now, I bought my first 914 new in early 1973. It cost in the neighborhood of $6,000. If I recall correctly, I put about $2,000 down and borrowed the rest. My payments were $137.50 a month for 3 years. It was probably one of the smartest things I ever did in my life. Not only was it a good investment but by joining PCA I began hanging out with established well to do people instead of the stoners I was partying with prior.
I traded my alcohol addiction in October of '04 and purchased the 914 in December of '04. But also to fill a void for letting an old friend go (that was killing me).
It was a complete stock rolling shell purchased from a stoner (found evidence) for $700 cash.
Win/win.
I traded some printing equipment to one of my customers.
I drove my 914 one day to his shop and he said I got one of those in my barn...... Haven't run it in years......

Bought the car for $3500 in 2000 at a Porsche repair shop in San Rafael, CA.
According to the sales man, the previous owner traded the 914 in to "upgrade" to a newer Porsche.

I would argue that not all things should be shared with your partner.
In June of 1973, I sold my 62 ChevyII that I had driven for 4 years while in college, for $150. I added about $300 or so more cash, to make a total of about $500 down payment. Financed the car for 3 years, payment was about $150.00/month. Drove the car until 1988 or 1989. I was never left stranded by this car. Odometer died at 185,000 miles. I drove the car for several years after the odo died, so I probably have over 200,000 miles on original engine. I finally stopped driving it when someone broke the window out. By then, I had 4 children, and rebuilding it had to wait until 2006. Now fully restored. Best car I have ever had. JoeO
I sold my mom's old 914 that she had given me, since it had been sitting for 10 years I bought a running one instead of fixing hers... (It was my uncles idea)
Bought a '75 in '76 for 5300.00 (if my somewhat "influenced" memory serves me) but never got around to making a single payment. A 64 mustang doing 55 m.p.h. ran a red and T boned me 13 days after purchase. Thirty three years later I am starting out with a 74 roller which may take me until retirement to get finished.
I sold my '65 Dodge dart GT and put my TR-3 in storage. List price on my -6 was around $5300 delivered in Brussels. ordered it in October 1969, shipped out to Germany in Jan 1970. Picked car up in April' Used a '53 small window VW for the interim. ($85 for purchase, and a couple of $10 engines ) As I recall, I financed about $3K at $98 per month. Put 20K miles on it over the various Autobahns in Germany, so it was a used car for import purposes. Don't recall exactly what it cost to ship it back to the USA when my tour was over. Picked it up in Jacksonville, FL in September '71 and drove 2000 mi to northern NM in one shot. (30 hrs) That was 66 mph avg with only I10 through the panhandle of FL as interstate.
BTW, I had to have rust spots on the rear wheelwell bead repaired by the local dealer (Islinger VW in Mannheim) before the first winter was out. repainted both rear quarters. Also had it repaired by Reinhold Joest's shop in Weinheim. (yes, that Joest). The oil pressure sensor turned out to be faulty, but I was prepared to pay for a rebuild which they had estimated at $600. Almost can't do a /6 tuneup for that now.. Those were the days...
I traded a mint condition 1968 chevelle SS, along with a few thousand in cash to buy JUST the rear fog light.
I have purchased many parts cars to assemble the proper and fitting 914 to display the light ever since.
Most recently I purchased a set of rear brakes that will properly frame the rear foglight in a shiny yet subtle background of bling.
Honestly....I bought it for 1k back in the late 90's all broken, rusted, and needing everything....that was about 6 914,s ago....most of which I have stripped and picked clean for the parts needed to make my foglight tribute complete.

I bought my '75 for cash from the original owner. Not much of a story there. This thread spurred me to look through all the paperwork that came with the car and the original purchase order from University Porsche/Audi in Seattle says that Gladys traded a '71 Mustang and they gave her $2200 trade-in for it.

1974 914 2.0 was bought by trading an Audi 100LS sedan plus cash at Becker VW-Porsche/Audi in Champaign, IL. 1970 914-6 was bought 3 years later in southern Illinois by trading every last cent I had in the world, and living on macaroni and cheese for 2 months till I could get the 2.0 liter sold. It was neat to see the two of them lined up in the garage nose to tail!
I learned the hard way when I sold my pre-CBS Telecaster that you never sell your guitar! Though I don't get much chance to play them, I love my 63 Fender Jaguar and blonde Tolex Super Amp.
Paid cash for my '74 a couple of years ago, but I sold my '71 240Z at about the same time.
I sold Porsches at Kendon P/A and Circle P/A from 1969 until 1975. We had information that '73 was the peak for the cars and that they were going to be phased out. I special ordered my '73 2.0 in silver with appearance group, fog lights and sway bars. I financed it through the store and it was taken out of my pay check. By 1975 I was polishing so many wheels I had to quit sales and just polish wheels. I sold the car to a friend that made me an offer I couldn't refuse ( at the time ) in 1989. He still has the car and it is as nice as when I sold it to him. He said he couldn't sell it back to me because it was his last sports car. He did send me a picture though. So sorry I can't say I'm still an original owner.
