Official Steel Flare Group Buy

George Hussey, the owner of Automobile Atlanta, has offered a group buy special on his reproduction 914-6 GT steel flares. These flares are NLA from Porsche and have been successfully reproduced by Auto Atlanta. More facts about these flares are available at www.autoatlanta.com

The special, one time, discount price is $550.00 per set. Shipping to the lower 48 will be $50.00, shipped Fed Ex. Regular price in the Auto Atlanta catalogue is $1,095 + shipping. If you live outside the lower 48, please send $600/sets ordered and additional shipping charges will be determined by Auto Atlanta prior to shipping.

If you purchase flares under the package deal, you may also buy a set of duplicate GT rockers for an extra 150.00 + $35 shipping. Regular catalog price is $225.00 +shipping. Fiberglass rockers are measured from a factory 914-6 GT. Again, additional shipping charges outside the lower 48.

The flare order ends on January 31st 2010. Within about 2 weeks of George receiving payment, he will start production. I would imagine we could expect to receive flares by the end of February.

Payment will be in the form of USPS money order made out to Automobile Atlanta. The only way to hold your place and receive a set at this incredible price is to have payment to me by January 31st. Please do not send checks or ask about other forms of payment, we do not have the means to accept anything other than money orders. Money orders sell for $2.00 at your local post office. George would like all questions and payments to be first directed at myself, so he and his staff do not spend extra time and resources on the transaction. I will do my best to answer questions and will contact George or his staff if needed.

Please mail your money order to me and include the following:
Name
Address
Phone
# of flare sets and optional GT rocker sets ordered.

Please send me an email Mark@MarkEpstein.net with your full name and # of flare sets ordered so I can keep a running tally and have a check against money orders received.

Thank you,

Expect a check from me.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jan 9 2010, 03:09 PM

Damn! That's killer... $150 lower than the buy that I organized.

Posted by: GeorgeRud Jan 9 2010, 04:22 PM

Thank George for going out on a limb and making these available at all. No business wants to spend money if it doesn't have to these days. If he's able to make a profit on them and get a a larger number made, it allows him to get the tooling costs amoratized much easier, and may allow more neat parts to become available in the future.

I've always been happy that people like Auto Atlanta, Vellios, Wevo, PMO, etc. have had the courage and guts to make unique parts available for a rather small, select market. Keep up the good work! thumb3d.gif

Well, I don't work at Auto Atlanta but if I had to guess...
Send money to AA
Production ~1 week later,
Post production,
Delivery to AA,
Pack and ship to customer
~1 month?

Probably hard to give an exact date because of all the different people who touch the flares but from what George told me, an end of February date is reasonable. Perhaps the organizer from the last group buy/George could chime in. Since AA is out of stock, this group buy is the fastest way to get a set at a price that can't be beat. Thanks, Mark

Mabey this thread needs some motivational pictures (awesome flared cars)

At that price I was also thinking about it. What eles exactly is involved other than the welding and painting. Can you keep the stock suspension the same and use spacers, or is that silly. Do you have to go 5 lug to get wheels that look right??

idea.gif

Posted by: GeorgeRud Jan 9 2010, 10:38 PM

Anything can be done with enough money (4 lug custom wheels can be made), but I think most folks use the readily available 5 lug wheels from the 911 line.

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2010, 12:02 AM

Custom wheels aside, you'll have to go five lug to really take advantage of the flares.

The sets of AA flares I've seen have always been impressive, and that price is nearly as cheap as fiberglass. cool_shades.gif

Do you think there is anything wrong with using 2" spacers with the stock 2.0 fuch alloys. I wasn't planning on changing the suspention when I install the flares. I know I won't get the advantage of wider rubber but I like the look of the flares and the four lug wheels.

The really cheap way to go is to buy a set of four to five lug adaptors and then purchase a set of seven inch fuchs repros and bolt them on. Another way is to purchase 7.5 and 8.5 boxster wheels and bolt them on with the four to five lug wheel adaptors. That will give the 914 an updated rather than vintage look.

We have several cars here with the steel flares installed including the old extreme (many of you are probably familiar with it) I will post a few.

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Jan 11 2010, 10:38 AM

here is a car that Craig Laughlin at the Camp sold us. It went to Germany. Had our steel flares and a four to five lug conversion that we sell installed. Craig had factory fuchs on it and we really liked the silver center color.Attached Image

Guess I will miss out again. This is too short of n.itice to come up with the extra money unless I skip out on the Buttercup build in Kansas. I would have een good for a couple of sets after February but I am committed to the Kansas trip. I also noticed you didn't mention anything about that price being dependent on a minimum 40 sets being sold. Has that changed now & 550.00 is the price regardless of how many are so,d?

Donald

Posted by: mepstein Jan 12 2010, 12:27 PM

We've had a really good response so far with quite a few members emailing me that the money orders are on the way. I counted 40 hands up when George placed his initial post for gauging interest in a group buy. Some of the vendors asked for 2-3 sets so I'm hoping we hear from you soon. At this price, it might make sense to keep a couple sets in stock. The GT look is getting more popular and the flares are the most obvious feature. They also give you the opportunity for wider wheels and tires. We are going to hit the 40+ number for sets ordered - Failure is not an option! So let your 'teener friends know that they need to order a set too. Thanks guys, Mark

I don't think Auto Atlanta wants to take personal checks (they would have to wait for them to clear and we have members ordering sets from other countries -Japan, Germany, ect.) and I do not want to take a check with my name on it, deposit it and then pay AA. That would not be safe for the members. Money orders are easy and safe - $2.00 at your local post office minutes before you drop it in the mail.

If you order 2 sets is it 100$ for shipping? Also if 2 sets of rockers then 70$ shipping for rockers? Any combined shipping? Should we include shipping with initial money order? Thanks, Jeff smile.gif

Any combined shipping? Not that I'm aware of. If there is, AA can make an adjustment later but I would not count on it. If you look at what it costs to pack and ship an item like this, $50 is very good.
Should we include shipping with initial money order? Yes please.

A set of flares and rockers+shipping should total $785

Thanks, Jeff smile.gif

Remember - Every set (or 2) ordered benefits the entire group. And please, make all money orders out to Automobile Atlanta - not me. Thank you, Mark

We will have 40 sets sold so everyone can get the $550 price.

I am receiving orders from Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan in addition to members from roadglue, pelican, club and samba.

Oh, my bad. Interesting...not trying to knock this but I'll be pretty surprised if you can get 40 sold in a reasonable amount of time. There has been several prior buys and I can't imagine there are 40 more who follow through. The real expense is the installation and when that realization sets in, the numbers drop. Also, hopefully you didn't double counts raised hands since alot of folks play in each of those forums in different names.

Good luck, your enthusiasm is exactly what a group buy needs.

* We should have 10 sets purchased just from the overseas members. I'd rather get this done quickly than have it drag out too long. I'm hoping members can have the flares in there hand begining of March.

I received 5 emails like this today;
Hi Mark.
Just sent my money order for $785 to you. Thanks again for coordinating this.
--Steve
1 set flares

The real expense is the installation and when that realization sets in, the numbers drop.

* I bet the members could get a group flare build together similar to the transmission clinic (past) and rust repair (future). East coast/mid/west coast. Drive in, weld, drive out. Production line style. Scotty B offered me a good price since I'm getting him to paint my car.

Also, hopefully you didn't double counts raised hands since alot of folks play in each of those forums in different names.

* I didn't take any of the hands too seriously, I'm counting members who are sending checks.

* Thank you. Real estate is sort of slow this time of year so I'm having fun with this stuff. Just bought new calipers, rotors, ect, ect from Eric Shea/PMB. Bunch of small parts from AA and Pelican. Planning on talking to Jake Raby for one of his killer 4's. Mark

Mark,

I'm not sure what your answer was to Donald's question. What happens to our $550 if we fall short of 40 sets? Will you ask for more money to cover any cost differential, or do we have the option to have the funds returned and our order cancelled on an individual basis?

I need to get to the Post Office to purchase the cashiers check/money order; one set of flares here.

We had another member ask and George said AA often sends to APO and FPO addresses. My understanding is there shouldn't be any additional shipping cost since flares weigh 22lbs and ship out of NY. Definately order a set for future builds. Or sell them for big $ profit overseas!

There are many articles out there this fabulous car. The original won lemans first second and third in 1966 and won in 67 68 and 69 then Henry Ford decided he had beaten the europeans enough (Ferrari for the most part) so retired the car. The recreation was made in 2005 and 2006 only. It looks and is constructed so much like a Porsche 904 that I am sure that the ford engineers tore apart a few when designing the GT 40!
This is the only american car I own besides our original family 1964 Buick Riviera http://kaufmanphoto.zenfolio.com/p611204665/h12430722#h14d01258 and was very surprised at what Americans could create in a car if they really tried.

I actually was talking about the 914-6 GT (thought you had a blue one?) but the Ford will suffice.

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Jan 21 2010, 09:45 AM

I was not thinking as I drove that Ford in today!

The M-471 GT Has had several articles written about it by Brett Johnson in the past and they were published in Excellence magazine. It is a totally stock car as is as it was from the factory with steel factory installed flares fiberglass flared rocker panels, six inch fuchs alloys with 21mm wheel spacers and longer wheel studs, the standard six cylinder engine, and best of all a factory front flared steel valance to match the flared fenders. The big giveaway is that the side markers have been relocated downward from the non flared location just like they did with the USA 916.
What is funny is that we measured both the 916 and the 914-6 m-471 and the flare placement is different between them. I wonder what Steve's car measures?
One cannot really beat the look of the GT flares as they really add toughness to the car and by being able to add the wider wheels and tires, adds tremendous handling to the car, making it able to compete with modern cars with fat wheels and tires.

I actually was talking about the 914-6 GT (thought you had a blue one?) but the Ford will suffice.

by the way the m-471 has not been run in at least seven years so although I would love to hand you the keys, you would get no where quickly Mark!!!!!!!!!!

It is about time we take this car out and get it running again.

Posted by: mepstein Jan 21 2010, 09:59 AM

Any links to those articles?

And that sort of answers my other question. When I flare my car, I'm planning on using the 2.0 fuchs and not going 5 lug. I have 205x60x15 so there's a lot more tire than original and I want to keep it from being "over-tired" and sluggish. I was thinking about 25mm of spacers since the wheels are 5.5" Nice to hear I will have a similar stance to the factory GT. I'm not trying to build a replica, just look right for me. Also have my eye on a pair of all leather GTS LeMans seats. Never cared for vinyl seats ( I know I'l catch hell for that statement).

Oh, talked to Jake Raby lat night. making plans for project 2270!

Yes - I'll be available when you get it running again. It's only a 1500 mile round trip for me. Hmmm, going to be at Hershey, PA?

I actually drove that car up there years ago for a 914 owners association meeting. Driving back at speed through the Shenandoah valley with the top off was tremendous.

I have my six dead presidents for the flares. Now I just have to talk myself into pulling the trigger. With money as tight as it is these days 600.00 is a wad to have just sitting around for a year or so until I can afford to pay somebody to install the flares. Still thinking........sure wish this had taken place in March. unsure.gif

And I promise you that it will never happen again. Although we have the tooling paid for (that is why the price is so low) we will never again get the quantity together to make another run, so although they will continue to be popular we will not come off the tooling included price of 1150 a set and the best wholesale break will be 795 for a quantity. Plus we have to run a hundred sets, and with all of the other stampings we have planned the flares will not be made again any time soon (AND YOU KNOW WHAT SOON MEANS AT AUTOMOBILE ATLANTA from the thread about "I owe
George an apology!!) (excuse the capitals, new keyboard!)

The body is the most important thing. If you have no body you have no car. One can get a lot further with a good body than with a good engine!!!!!!!

As they say "The check is in the mail" (or money order in this case) for one set of flairs. Can you PM or email me when you get it?

Posted by: mepstein Jan 25 2010, 04:00 PM

Honestly, It's a little much to PM 40 members since user names don't always match real names. I will make a list of all orders I receive and post to this site so members can cross check against what they ordered. You can also call me with any questions but give some time for me to receive your checks. Hope that sounds fair to everyone. Thanks, Mark

Okay, made the decision today to part with my dead presidents in exchange for a set of flares. Just gotta scratch up some rocker money. I think I have a plan that will allow me to have them installed & have the car painted this year, along with installing a new 200hp motor. With a lot of luck maybe in time for MUSR 11 down on The Dragon.

I do not believe in cutting a nice 914 EVER! That means no lumping it with strange engines no color changes no carburation and NO FLARES!!
Flares are to help correct bad body work or to transform a ragged 914 into a thing of GT beauty.

However we DO have over 200 up the street begging to be brought back, and I am sure that they would accept anything you wanted to do to them, and so would I!!!!!!!!!! The more 914s on the road the better.
By the way it is Chad Dixon's birthday today (37) and he is busily working on his steel flared, rotory powered 914!!!!!!!!!! He calls it his 913x

Posted by: mepstein Jan 27 2010, 10:07 PM

I've read over 20 threads of various "rustorations". Lots of time and money. Lots! Even the guys who weld spend money on the replacement metal and supplies. Most of the threads I've read are 3+ years long and don't have finished pictures of the car. So I'm lead to believe they are still on jackstands in the garage. I'm still picking up the rust free roller (rust free because PO spent $4K on rust repair) but I will probably resell since I don't have time or ability to put it back together.

Posted by: John Jentz Jan 28 2010, 10:16 AM

Ok, somebody has to be the last guy in. Is it me? I'll take one set of flairs and one set of GT rockers. Can I pick them up at AA as I live x20min from there? On my way to the bank, PO and FedEx. Thanks for doing this

Posted by: gothspeed Jan 28 2010, 12:34 PM

GT flares is the reason I bought my 1973 1.7 914. It is clean, low rust, doors close nicely with FI that still works. I tried buying a basket case to flare but the examples I saw at the time were very bad shape considering what the owners wanted for them.

The one I ultimately bought had a high asking price but we had good conversation and the guy liked the idea I was gonna turn it into a GT.

Hey George, how about a free 914 (and title) with the purchase of a set of flares and rockers?

That is a great idea. If I could get 40 participants who would be willing to buy 1500.00 worth of 914 parts, for each I would give them a free 914 (with title) to restore! I donate the 914 and YOU save it!

Hey wait a second, 40 of us are halfway to $1500 worth of parts already! rolleyes.gif

Just received money orders:

Cali guy 1 flare
Karl Oygard 1 flare 1 rocker
Edwin Flores 1 flare 1 rocker

Edwin was kind enough to send me a money order without the PAY TO: filled out (blank check) and included the receipt. Edwin, I appreciate the offer of free money smile.gif but I will take care of it properly.

Thanks again everyone!!! Mark

Haha yeah, that was my second time dealing with money orders and i didn't know if you were to write on them or what. Thanks for setting this up!

Flares!!!

The front car (mine) has AA flares, the back one (dads) has factory. As you can see, there is no visual difference.

YES MANY more than 40. Years and years ago an old mentor of mine from Connecticut, Oliver Jones, said upon looking at my 356 cabriolet restoration project, "George I used to cut up 356 speedsters that made your car look like a pile of junk" From that moment on I vowed NEVER to again cut a 914 unless it was horribly crashed. Instead I took them up the street and parked them on our four acres. They rest in peace until someone comes along to save them.

Steel Flare update:
(as told by George Hussey - AA)

checks arrived. We are processing! Thank you again.
I just talked with Tim, and he has the dies out (took two days!) Tomorrow he will load the fronts (that will take a day) and then he will begin doing the fronts, and next week will set up the rears. The production of the 100 sets will take three to four weeks, he will do twenty five sets at a time and trim and send.

Please let me know who paid first and those are the ones who will get their flares first.

------
So it looks like production has begun. I am still receiving the last of the money orders and will send them to AA next week. Thanks, Mark-the flare guy-Epstein

we are stamping and sending as they come off the end of the line. The rest of the rockers should be completed at the end of next week and shipped out all at one time.
Please remember that these rockers are fiberglass just like the factory so need to be fitted and sanded and painted! If they look rougher than you thought that is why. They fit great and are exactly the correct length.

Mine arrived today... Waiting on rockers and for the welding gods to bestow the ability to install them (first have to get the nerve to chop up a really straight car). Seriously - I will be looking for someone to install these. Probably in the Dallas/Ft Worth area (I do not think any shops in Midland/Odessa could do it the way it needs to be done). If anyone has any body shops in the DFW area that they know could do it right please PM me.

I PM'd George who instructed me to e-mail Mia (accounting@autoatlanta.com) to find out where I was on the list. I'm in no hurry, but the response was "2 to 4 weeks". I was one of the first to send my money order in FWIW.

Posted by: Zardozz Mar 18 2010, 02:36 PM

I'm still waiting but then again I haven't found anyone to put them, I'm not qualified smile.gif

Got my flares a week ago. They showed up in great shape.

Posted by: BenNC Mar 18 2010, 03:39 PM

I spoke with George about a week ago. They had some sets in stock, which is what shipped out already.

The new run is in the final trim stage. I got the same 2-4 weeks estimate.

Posted by: mepstein Mar 18 2010, 04:13 PM

The man in the video said they had some rears left over from the previous order so they could match with the new fronts and send out. I imagine they make a bunch of fronts and then rears to match. Some have shipped and the video makes it obvious that more are being made. I hope everyone receives their order soon and starts posting their own flare build.

the rockers look beautiful. Our man was buy fitting them for a trim line along the door opening wednesday. Tim is cranking out the flares each day. He just sent me radio face plates they made on their laser cutter and they look GREAT!
We also have the spoiler with out brake ducts that looks great taken right from the old Mitcom / Prototype Plastics mold, one of the many we bought from the company before it went out. Finally those original ABS rockers look absolutely stunning if anyone wants an old 70s look via this dealer provided accessory.

I received my flares but not my GT rockers before I delivered my car to Scotty B so I asked Mia at AA to send rockers direct to Scott. She said no problem.

I could use a set of those GT rockers. What do they look like? I would like them as close to M471 option as possible ... smile.gif

They were made from the original factory m-471 GT rockers that the factory installed on the last six. The part we took the mold from even had the original factory part number on it....both sides!!

Worth the wait. Both flares and rockers are top notch in quality and appearance.

Subject: RE: flares

We are rubber padding the last hit in the press for the rear flares. Those
will be done late today. Then the rear flares need to flanged at the
bottom and cleaned. This takes two people two days to finish. We should
have them all finished and ready to ship by late Wednesday or Thursday
this week. The rear flares take considerably longer to do than the front
ones. Longer than I expected for sure. I can drop ship some for you
tomorrow if you need. Thanks, Tim.

I can understand this. It seems takes longer that you would think to get production running. You take your best estimates and even pad a little. The key is the product is top notch. I don't mind waiting a bit for quality work.

Brown Santa came to my house today also. Unfortunately I wasn't here and never am when he visits which is why I gave a shipping address to work for my flares and rockers. I guess somebody didn't pay attention and just had them shipped to my house. Takes forever to track them down around here. Probably end up going back to the shipper as I can never be here when they run so I ALWAYS have EVERYTHING shipped to my work. Oh well. headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif hissyfit.gif hissyfit.gif hissyfit.gif ar15.gif sawzall-smiley.gif ar15.gif sawzall-smiley.gif screwy.gif screwy.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Donald - Sorry there was a mistake on shipping instructions. I made a copy of the letter you sent me but I don't have an address other than the return on the envelope. Hopefully you can call UPS and have them redirect or leave a note authorizing them to leave at house. My apologies. Mark

They have tried to deliver mine twice, once more and they go bye bye. Was going to go pick them up but work during their business hours. Short of a miracle mine will be heading back to AA soon. sad.gif

I got my flares. i had gotten a set a couple years ago but had to sell do to fund shortage.
The set I just got seem to have more 'ripples' in them. I know a little bit is normal but these seem to me fairly significant. I don't recall my last set have any. Any thoughts on this?

Mine have ripples in them as well. Nothing that can't be fixed but I was expecting them to be smoother from what I had heard. Keep in mind that the factory flares had ripples as well.

Rockers are still incoming.

They all do. Unfortunately that is a result of the stamping process sad.gif

So how do you "iron" out or cover up these ripples?

Check with Mia at Auto Atlanta. My flares and rockers came in April. The rockers had a corrected address on them.
