UPDATE 04/2017:
The Limo Project has found a new home!
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=307809
Today work has begun on the 914World exclusive "914 Limousine" project!
After years of tossing the idea around, McMark, RobW and i decided a few weeks back that it was time that someone actually build such a monstrosity.
RobW had a bare shell with front end damage so all we needed was another donor to make the front of the Limo.
I bought a '75 roller from Chris Hamilton and Rob and i went to pick it up this morning.
Once at McMark's shop in Sonoma, we started stripping the car, built a second dolly to be able to roll the shell around and started to cut off the rear of the white car and the front of the red car.
Both cuts are rough cuts at this point. Next weekend, we'll start with the more detailed cutting and test fitting.
The final result will be a 4-door, 4 (maybe 5) seater with at least one removable top (maybe two) and all the usual bling one would find in a Limousine.
The paint has yet to be determined but we are leaning towards a certain Porsche period correct 98 color.

CURRENT STATUS:
- Fixed the huge hole in the front trunk floor ...

.
Picking up the second car:
The two cars, before the cutting:
Me playing with the plasma cutter:
More cutting. The longs on the later cars have a double walled inner reinforcement that took quite a bit of work to cut through.
Between this and Anklebiter there are some killer projects going on right now! I can't wait to see this baby roll into an event.
Tada!
Closeup of the inner workings of the hell hole. They all have rust there, even if the top of the long looks decent.
Second car, front end ready to be cut:
We're saving the windshield hoop for later:
Nice cut line ...
Almost there:
Cool is it going to have a hot tub wet bar and a barbecue in it......
Voila!
This gives you a rough idea of the dimensions although we'll be cutting off another 1 1/2 feet or so.
Basically, the front door jamb of the red car will be right at the firewall of the white car.
The list for next weekend includes:
- fine tuning on the cuts
- removing the front bulkhead section on the red car
- removing the rear firewall on the white car
- getting the longs lined up.
Andy
where do drivers apply? cant wait to see more on this thread
omg.
this will be great.
lol
sorta!
Whatcha gonna do between the targa bar of the front car and the door of the rear car? Enclosed or open air?
As for paint...you gotta have big metal flakes.
Immediate reactions:
1. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=101939&view=findpost&p=1247339!!
This is like the "COOLEST THING EVER!!"
Cant wait to see what happens next....I knew Andy had a plot...LOL
Steve
I like it!
4 or 6?
So the 914 "limo" is going to be a four seater? haha Cool project though!
This would be the correct build for a V8 and an automatic transaxle. Are you going to need to put a frame on it, or keep it unibody?
Zach
A good friend of mine is doing something similar with three Deloreans (imagine, three gullwing doors on each side). I have seen the car, and it truly is a neat project! There are obviously many crazys in all brands of auto-enthusiasts.
I think the biggest problem on the 914 project is going to be getting enough stiffness in the long chassis. The Delorean has a spine running along its roof that provides structure, and I wonder if the 914 won'd need some sort of support (or some major reinforcement along the rocker panels) to work. I wonder if giving up the removeable top (for the rear passenger compartment), and welding in a roof panel would help the rigidity of the project.
So nice to finally get this... uh... dream underway.
There's a lot of tricky metal work that's going to need to be done. But once the two cars are together it's going to be pretty much like building any other 914.
Design Considerations:
1. Fully operational and street legal. We want to be able to drive this thing to events as well as even rent it out on the weekends.
2. Four working doors with working roll up windows.
3. Comfortable seating for rear seat passengers.
4. Clean and comfortable interior. I do not want to build a car that doesn't seal right and looks like crap inside.
We have some crazy ideas and a lot of issues to deal with, but I'm extremely confident that we'll be able to build something that's really nice and really exciting.
....Saratoga top cut into a "T" top using a steel center beam for the back passenger compartment?
If you keep the rear compartment a two seater, you could fab up a center console that went from fire wall to fire wall that incoprated several of those cup holders that actually get cool or hot (they make them big enough for a champaign bottle) and you could mount a flat screen below the window opening.
I wonder if there is a way to make the window inbetween the two compartments electric.... you could replace the glass with an upohstered privacy partician!!
bitchen bitchen project!!!!
I would to weld on that thing! Audi turbo 4 cylinder with an auto trans.
Flares or un-flared that is the question?
I think structurally you may have to do a tin top over the rear section but you could use a roof from a BMW 525I Touring. My 95 Touring has a double sunroof. Yes Two sun roofs in the same top. They open really cool too.
Here's a link that discribes how it works.

Auto-cross or daily driver?
Nice progress Andy and McMark....
It is truly impressive, Andy buys a roller in the AM and a few guys turn it into that by the afternoon.....
OMG!
food for thought.
maybe keep it in the family of sunroofs as VW?
a samba bus style:
cloth sunroof and sky lights
Very cool idea, I'll be watching with interest.
HAHAHA F***ing Love it!
Looks like my prediction was right.......
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=101939&hl=limo
Hmmm..... mebbe I ought to use that crystal ball more......
O crystal ball, where's my next Job???
"Limo Driver"? that can't be right.....
Attached thumbnail(s)
I showed this thread to wife, and her reaction was that you would need 4 914's put together to make a limo... 2 914's only equal a normal sized car...!!!
914 Towncar?
Make it a 6 wheeler with 2 engines Cool project! Defenitely pimp it out.
But it will no longer be a true mid engine car
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Nice try guys. Clearly a photoshop job. April 1st is a couple months away try again then.
Attached image(s)
More inspiration!
Tomorrow is my forst day back to work I will see if I can do a couple of sketches.
Mark
Holy you guys were serious. I thought you were just talking. Make sure you reinforce the loooonngs!!
Damn! Andy, I was sure you were going to build a truck.
After looking at the two tubes lined up again I'm sure you can build that car as a targa top. I think you could actually stretch it a little more.
Like a train wreck.... You just can't look away!
I want to hire it out next time I'm over there. Don't rush, I have no reason to leave here other than to go ride in a 914 limo.
Very creative, I like the group effort concept. Are we going to see the Limo at WCR 2010 ?
Speaking of WCR 2010 Where is it gonna be?
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=102032
We're hoping to be there in all the four door glory.
So will the rear window of car #1 become a working privacy glass window??
this is cool
My kids Love it! This is going to be soo cool. Maybe Hotwheels can finally do a 914, if it was something like this, to fit in with their fantasy hot rod line.
This should be fun to watch!
Needed more "B" pillar!
[attachmentid=203141]
This is going to be fun to watch, I am voting for Tangerine and classic leather interior, also you need to get some Fuchs on there for sure
Sorry...just went for "bling" 21s and a hot tub...just FUCHing around.
Ken,
Nice mockup. Maybe angle the rear of the B-pillar to match the front of the B-pillar.
914's turn heads. This one will...well...I'm not sure what type of reaction this one will get.
OK...forget the bling wheels and hot tub...this is serious, right? It's a 914 so the Fuchs stay. Here she is with the newest "B" pillar.
In order for the rear windows to work, you need to do something else to fill the gap at the B piller. I don't think you want to try to redesign the rear doors, it would be much easier to use the stock window.
Of course, you need to put power windows in! A center privacy glass window should be easy to fabricate - that's just a straight up and down slide.
Good observation...now the doors and glass are stock.
The "B" Pillar should be narrow and instead of vinyl should be smoked glass. Make the rear door normal sized and use the fill panel between the doors as a space filler.
Try that.
Nah...worn out!
Once the build is done, we must find the owners of this car and challenge them to a race. Or A/X.
Love you too man.
Sure...that works.
How about "suicide" doors on the rear???
If you want to commit suicide just try to contribute without asking permission.
So Andy,
Can you share any details of how this might look? Especially interested in how the roof line will work as the stock roof line/window top edge slopes down towards the rear of the car.
Congrats to you and the Limo team on a cool project!
Got an exterior paint color selected?
Nobody else seemed to mind and in fact were suggesting changes...giving some kudos, etc. You're are a great help to all, and I honestly & sincerely appreciate the great deal I've gleamed from your experience and expertise...really. I hope it continues and you accept this post with no malice. But, sometimes you need to chill a tad....just a tad. I can sense that being one of the "Grandfathers" of this group can be frustrating...newbies coming in and going where others have been warned repeatedly not to go, etc. You know there's been a thread on old targas vs. new targas for example, and get frustrated when (I for example) ask what the difference is without starting a thread search on every question I have. How hard is it to just say there's already a thread without having to add things like "It's not that hard to find guys." Again...what did you lose by me throwing in a coupla Photoshop images I enjoyed making for the group (and you I mistakenly thought) that others seemed to enjoy? Geeshhhhhhhhh.
Love,
Ken
I see and understand your point as well. The problem is one that happens wayyyyyyy too often between people, in person and on the internet. It's called expectations. You have described your expectation of what this thread would entail. I stepped all over that (not having the slightest clue what your unexpressed expectation was).
I would lean towards option 2.) also. I don't think the stock removable top will work due to its curvature unless a curved filler is put in between the ligfted top and the door glass top edge. Even then the roof line will have an ugly 'bump' in it if the stock top is reused.
I think Felix had great difficulty with this same issue of getting custom door glass on the neo914 project. He eliminated the triangle glass, but getting custom door glass was very expensive. I don't think he ever solved it last I heard. Flattening out the top to stretch it the full length of the limo would be as straightforward as possible, but still a lot of work. I hope there is a talented metalworker available. Maybe Marks partner?
Building the edges of the steel top to match the top edge of the stock door glass curvature would be the easiest approach, although still a challenge. With a solid steel top fixed sunroofs could be put in both front and rear - simple plexiglass panels using that rubber marine gasketing 'zip strip' just like the aftermarket moon roofs use. Not sure how to make a removable top panel, but this car screams for it.
Can't wait to see the creature in the raw state. Show me the Limo!
For the top, I'm thinking plywood.. easy to paint or texture too!
If the top of the windshied loop can be used, it might look funny but it should work, and connect it to your custom Targa pillar. Or are 2 tops end to end really funky?
Are you gonna have Neon lights under the Limo?
BTW; I used to have a Limo Company - the stories I could tell.....
...it's really not intended to redesign your car...unless you want a Texas Limo. High Ground Clearance, leather upholstery, and plenty of horse power.
LOVE THE CAR... I want you to drop us off at Disney Land when it's ready!
Attached image(s)
Don't forget the Xbox 360 to play Forza III!
I saw a show on TV once about a shop in Los Vages that builds stretch limos, they always have a vinyl roof because the metal roofs always warp. The padded vinyl hides the wrinkles .
Good thing 914s don't have metal roofs.
Actually I think I would use metal (remembering Dan Root's job) around the perimeter. Build the overall roofline you want, make it strong (which would be nice given the extra length) then drop in the open top options how you want. Open top above the driver isn't as important as the back... Where a large open area would be great - for passengers to stand up while cruising the Tahoe gut during WCR! Wait, is that Mrs. C swinging her top around?
Finally, after hearing you all talk about it and scheme at the transmission clinic, it is a nice to see it progressing
Nice work! I want to see more pictures.(actual pictures!) I don't even care if they are slightly out of focus... wait, who had the camera?
On the roof ideas... Would building a custom roof out of fiberglass be an option? In a similar fashion to how some of the car stereo guys build sub enclosures. Make the arches and shapes with balsa wood, plywood, etc; then stretch speaker grill cloth over it. Maybe you could build the mold that way to get the lines you're wanting, to get somewhat of a consistency.
Mark's got that vacuum pump, does he have a big enough bag?
Fiberglass is certainly an option. The roof portion of the build is going to be the only big hurdle to cross. Everything else will be easier.
Did you say you have a rough sketch? Can we see it, if so?
I'm curious if you've thought of a triple door limo? It looks like this example has a collapsible middle window or sail panel.
Just more food for thought.
I can't wait
A buddy of mine builds perfect roofs (did one for his Prowler) out of carbon fiber using foam as the mock up. He only does this as a hobby and for his own pleasure. He also did the fenders and air box (looks like the fuel tank) on his V-Rod. Never seen him actually build these things but they are freakin' perfect.
Here's your motor in my garage, I've been waiting to use it for something
Hmmm...say the roof were to be made flat and then we would have the window issue. Could we address the issue by modding or adding a shim bracket onto the window regulator to raise the final position of the window in it's closed position?
Cool project.
I like the bus sliding top idea for simplicity and stability.
Have fun with it.
Oh man thats gotta be fun,,,, keep the pics coming. Very cool...
T.C., as long as I have been reading these threads, I can't believe " the stuff in your garage". drool, drool. Al. BTW, I'm glad you love 914's.
Always like the unusual, weather shortened or lengthened. Now I've had awful thoughts, putting a 914 front on my bus, sectioning it to the right height, you are really expanding our horizons.
Andy, Mark and Rob, you guys are going to make us proud, can't wait.
OMG! He can also change the length of the seasons!
Sweet
Anyone familiar with the work at Original Customs will know this project will be a great blend of VW/Porsche factory and custom touches. Clean and with purpose. I hope to see OEM Porsche wheels on it, and I hope some fun work-parties are opened to give locals (and those with lots of spare time) and chance to get their wrench or sanding block on it to be part of history.
T.C., that is an amazing engine, it would be in my living room, not garage
What's the plan for the 3 day weekend? Any cutting? or
Thinking... "Please let Mark be the one taking the photos".
Andy, I almost offered a hand but something popped up last minute.
Is it beer-thirty yet?
Its looking good....
Today was a good day. We got to the point where we have the longs lined up correctly. The fitment is surprisingly good. We weren't sure at first how well the two parts would mate together, but even the fenders will blend together nicely.
Everything lines up just right!
Cutting out the front bulkhead:
Rob trimming the rear end:
Test fitting, we did this probably 20 times or so, each time taking a bit more off the fenders etc. to make sure we get a perfect fit.
Still more to cut:
Cutting out the front seatbelt mounts as we're going to use these again later:
Looking pretty good already!
The cars are not level yet, you can see the center being a bit too high. Of course we'll get everything level and square before we do any actual welding:
We got within 1 1/2" of our target, which is the two longs actually mating up to each other.
We need to do some more trimming on the floor-pans and the front firewall needs a relieve-cut for the top of the door pillar to slide in.
Quite a lot of leg-room!
Andy,
I gotta tell you it looks better than I thought it would.
I checked out a few limos on the way home and they are absolutely jacked up a few inches...
BTW the full length profile picture doesn't do it justice... the car has an awesome line...
That's it for today. Time for some ...
Once the two halfs are welded together, we'll cut out the white firewall completely to really open up the inside space of the car ...
Andy
Looking great Team Limo
I just had an idea for the top.
If the windshield was raked back, the top of it would lower and a newly-fabbed continuous top would be more or less level with the rear most Targa bar. Mod the middle Targa as needed for height to match.
So is this going to be a 'stock' look narrow body....or you going 'outlaw' with it? Either way its fun watching it come together.
We need a 914 limo smiley now...:914limo:
I have a new desktop pic. Andy looking like he's ready to hit the drive through for some fried chicken
That's going to be a ridiculously crazy car.
This is freaking awsome! Good work guys. I am going to have to come by and take a look sometime.
I have a suggestion for the top. Glass a windsheild frame to the back of the front targa top so you can slip the rear targa top into the front one.
By using two tops and sectioning them together you could make up the difference in length for the rear compartment.
Because the front targa top archs downward at the targa bar you will need to reshape it to get a clean straight line to the rear top section.
This will allow the removal of the rear targa top then the front targa top. The only problem will be storage....
Very awesome! Not what I had imagined...it is better by all means!
Andy, has anyone ever put air bags on a 914? Would it be possible to do in order to create clearance at railroad tracks and parking lot entrances?
This would certainly suck ...
Attached image(s)
That wasn't so hard was it?
What about Low Rider elevator shocks to be sure of ground clearance?
Somebody mentioned a tailgate 914...
Attached image(s)
This is coming along super nice. A 924 ( I think that is the one) steel sunroof roof for the rear would give you the strength. You may want to use 2 steel sunroofs. That will be very strong and still be very cool.
Bob
Have you guys thought about a set of 17" Rota Fuchs, 7s all the way around & you won't need to flare.. Of course, there is that group buy if you choose to flare it. On running gear, have you thought about using a Boxster engine with a Tip??
This is a cool project!!
There was definitely a lot of cutting going on Saturday. I stopped by and did not know what they were building. A good hour and a half went by before I was like ok what are you guys doing. (yes I missed the obvious) Once they told me it was going to be a limo I could not stop looking at it trying to visualize the finished car. This will be very cool to watch come together
Photoshopped a few hours ...
The images are very large. Click to watch them at full size.
All these three drawings mean custom side windows
In this drawing the half circle window is not attached to the door
tricky part
I'm sure it adds complexity, but you've got to find a way to have separate targa tops for front and rear.
Andy...Hurry up...kick his ass...demean...belittle...pleeeeease! Otherwise I'll think you're anti-semitic! Lay him out dude!!!
Once everything gets sorted out, you guys should add a powered rear window for the first half of the car. Maybe source the system out of a Honda Del Sol. It would so complete the whole limo theme.
Andy,
Don't know if you have an Engineer on the job but a quick hand calculation can tell you a lot.
I looked up the maximum deflection formula for a beam (the longs) supported at each end (the wheels) and subjected to the big butt test. The maximum deflection of the long will be directed down at the center of the beam equidistant from the wheels whenever the big butted person stands at the center of the car.
The formula is:
Deflection = weight (of big butt) times the longitudinal length ^3 (CUBED)
divided by 48 times Youngs modulus times the moment of inertia for the long.
What this tells us is deflection from the big butt test is a function of the CUBE of the length of the long.
What does that mean?
If the length of the longitudinals is one normal length then one cubed is 1*1*1=1 unit of deflection from a big butt.
If the length of the longs is doubled, then the length used in the equation is twice as long. So 2*2*2=8 times the deflection from the same big butt.
So it's the CUBED length in the equation that's going to give you 8 times the deflection (with the big butt test) when you double the long length.
Might be a little bouncy unless you put in some extra steel.
Very nice ! Have you considered installing a rumble seat into the rear trunk ? If the limo was used in a parade, dignitaries would need a conspicious place to ride. When not in use, the rear trunk lid would look normal
Plus, you could get seating for two more ...
Can't wait to see the progress pics
Good. Didn't want you to be real surprised if it bounces a lot.
You would be amazed how few engineers bother to do a quick hand calculation for a "reality check". I can't tell you how many times I've seen it done.
Got a fat bottom chick? They work almost as well and are much more entertaining (in a bouncy way) when they jump up and down.....
If they are small, you might have to get two...
When jew're right, jew're right...I apologize.
That's pretty close to what we're looking at doing.
How about a dual cowl pheaton? Cozy
Sweet work people!!!!!!
These guys had similar ideas and capability. Like some of thier touches.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6dCuz34LRU
I like the second steering wheel idea, BUT it should turn the rear wheels! Imagine the fun!
We thought about leaving the pedal system in the rear car for some fun hyjinks. Front seat steers, bake seat works the gas/brake/clutch and shifts.
Can't believe you are actually making this happen! Love the way you have challed one chassis to 'slot' the other in - this is well on it's way to a superb looking limo. If you can make it look factory I take my hat off to you all.
Now get that V8 lined up to power it
...with an automatic.
When done, you can challenge this other VW to a race
Tell your wife millipedes don't have tires at all!
Houston, we have a Roller!
No pics from me, McMark took some as did Jeff Keyzer. You'll have to wait until they get around to upload the pics and video.
This went a lot smoother than i had anticipated, we leveled the two halfs, pushed them together, squared the whole thing and , voila!
This is gonna be soooo much fun.
Andy
Going with the Warner brother's dixie cup and string intercom? Or perhaps something alittle more high tech
Hey Jeff (Mr. Mighty Ohm, leader of the Resistance):
Andy
"Leader of the resistance"
Brilliant
McMark emailed me his pics, so here it goes ...
We added bracing to the inside of the longs on the front portion of the limo and used that to get the two halves tacked together initially.
After that, we welded support plates on the outside of the longs and added (temporary) bracing to the top sail-panel to doorjamb and firewall to triangulate the whole mid-section.
This turned out to be plenty strong!
And here she is, rolling for the first time!
Leftovers ...
Attached image(s)
Next weekend, we'll be taking out the front firewall and add some nice support to the longs at the mid-section.
This will also give us an idea of what is needed to mate the two floorpans and the center tunnels.
If we have time, we'll start addressing the sail-panel area.
I'm still amazed at how well the two parts line up. It looks like everything will be pretty straight forward. The only thing that needs some extra attention is the fact that the door-post for the rear is about 1" higher than the fender near the front door handle. We'll have to find a way to blend those together.
Andy
Looks like fun!
That's gonna be a riot to ride around in!
I am trying to fix the rotted area where the bumper bolts on. I sure could use that part of the front end. That is a complicated part to shape.
Isn't that as evil as McCain dumping his first wife just because she got disfigured in a car wreck (not a 914)?
Wow guys, that looks great. I didn't think it would line up so simply. Great work, can't wait to see the next update.
So let me get this straight, you guys are using two ancestors of the Boxster to build an ancestor of the Panamera? Which is actually not an ancestor so much as a missing link?
Nice work! and I thought Disneyland was where dreams came true....
god this is soo cool
You guys are almost done!
I'm still amazed at how straightforward and smooth (I didn't say easy ) this project has been. I have no doubts that it will be plenty strong. There are a few large hurdles to cross yet, but we've gotten a lot farther in three days than I would have expected.
And yes, the white car was rusty. Why do you think we picked it? The funny thing is that once we're a little farther along I will have to take some time to do a little rust repair.
Thanks Andy, mightyohm (Jeff K), and LarryR for their help. It really sped things up during all the measuring, leveling, and straightening. (we checked the balance and alignment of the halves about 30 different ways)
I hate to ask this, but are you going to have to cut it in half to get it in the paint booth?
i think two 914s might fit in the booth bumper to bumper, this thing is less one deck lid . Seriosly though, how long is it ? like the size of lincoln continental? or is it acctually approaching true limo size.
We live our dream through you guys.
Anything we (914-World guys) can donate??
Tom
Hey Mark how about calling it a Twin Targa? Limo and 914 seem to be at odds with each other.
You can shock the pinkie benders by entering it in the next PCA parade autocross.
John
914Sedan just doesn't have the same ring.
I just showed my daughter this thread and she wants it for her senior prom in four years.
Sounds great Paul.
Love it!
I got Jeff's pictures today. Not much new stuff, so here are a few more ...
I just now noticed that the rear part of the limo is in fact Patrick's old car that his son ran into a tree ...
At least, she'll live on.
Patrick, if you read this, you'll get free Limo rides for lifetime!
Andy
Let me know if you guys need parts I may have some.
So what are the next steps?
I knew you guys could do this, but what about the engine? I want to see how what you were discussing when I was out there is going to materialize
You can put the mini bar in the front passengers seat with access to the rear compartment
Just measured the wheelbase: 148 in. from wheel center to wheel center.
Stock 914 is about 96 in. Which makes it about a 50% increase in length.
On second thought at least it did not end up cut into pcs, oh wait it did. I am so confused!
Will there be Airport shuttle service available? Will the driver be wearing a chaffeur suit, holding a name card and beer chilling in the bar? I'd pay good cash for that type of service!
Family still lives in San Jose, I go there twice a year.
Thanks, guys. Now my dad has EVEN MORE reason to hate me for wrecking his teener.
On the other hand, interesting project....
That's some good medicine....
The chauffeur will be wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a sailing cap, shorts and flip flops! It's the 914 way.
We moved the doors to the back and started mocking up the roofline:
This is going to need some cleanup and welding ...
Attached thumbnail(s)
The lower portion of the firewall will stay. We already seam-welded the top shut and we'll add a flat section to the back to get a nice clean box. It'll add to the strength of the center portion and also give us a clean transition to the floor-patch that still needs to be added.
The front portion of the rear center tunnel will be replaced with a custom piece for better looks.
The side areas will have substantial bracing added on the inside from the doorposts up into the rollbar area. Then the whole side will be closed up with a smooth patch-panel.
For the roof, it looks like we will in fact be able to keep both targa tops for the front and rear. We came up with an idea that would give us a nice roofline and still have the front top removable as well. We shall see ...
Any local volunteers for Saturday the 20th??? We could need some hands as we will have to do a lot of cleaning, grinding and prepping of the inside before we weld in all the reinforcements and panels.
Andy
my thought is two targa roofs with a targa band between, The separation, after all shows the client and chauffeur are two different entities.
Nice Job , will be great FUN.
This is rediculous. We all know you can't limo a 914
Andy, bench seat in the back? Maybe even an L bench?
To bad there are not to many options for a automatic trans, would make it easy for the shift linkage. Keep up the good work.
I still can't really believe how smoothly this project is going. I figure another month or so and we'll be installing interior and thinking about motor/trans.
Convert a TIV to diesel
Yeah! Nice progress guys!
What a great job guys. Fast work to.
I think you should start a "Donate to the Limo Fund" but the donation is parts?
I am sure you guys have already been thinking about this stuff but??? Here is some parts I was thinking about;
Wood bar with leather trim.
Intercom system
Seats
SC front end for vented rotors
Bigger brakes
Shift bar parts
Longer clutch and gas cable. etc....
How about the MR2 setup of cable shifting??
914 interior bits, window cranks, crome cover for the locks,
Things that we can send to you to help the project come along. Just post what you guys need team work.
That's quite obvious, Grant--after all, who puts phone dials on a Boxster??
... Probably the same sort of person who drives a 914!!
Oh, wait!
--DD
Why did the firewall come out? I would have thought a privacy partition would be in order? Electric window?
Every time I look at this thread, I'm reminded of this scene...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixDpqVtXbfQ
Three guys wanna head over to the beach in a four seater 914, you wanna be the loser in the back by yourself?
This way four people can ride and converse easily. Having sat in the chassis with the firewall and without, I wouldn't build it any other way.
I'm gonna stop calling it a limo, cause a real limo would be built completely differently and would have things like a privacy screen. This is the 914 Saloon.
Isn't the sole purpose of the partition to avoid open container laws? Might want to reconsider.......
Hey, you need to post warnings before slapping in those kind of pictures!!!
I dub thee : NINE FOUR 'TANG
Uh ....yeah...about that ....I was referring to the POON not the Must
No problem...I can Photoshop THAT too!

Nice car.
The Feb. Excellence has a 911 sedan that is in the spirit of your project. Chick Iverson also had a VW bug sedan. Would a 944 sedan look like a Panamera?
BOTTOM of page 4 ????
We reached the cleanup & patch phase.
Today, we removed the mid section of the center tunnel. It'll be replaced with a custom (removable) version. It'll be nice to be able to access everything inside the tunnel in the center section of the car.
We'll have to run all custom cables, wires and fuel-lines etc.. The new tunnel will be narrower and lower than the stock tunnel.
We also patched the sides of the floorpan. The mid-section requires some creative metal bending. We'll add that next weekend.
The rest of the day was spent cleaning up and prepping the side sections around the inside of the targa bar to door post transition.
That part will also be patched in next weekend.
And here are the pix:

No.1, girl in purple on the pole needs a wax or shave.
N0 2, HD channel just showed a Ferrari Medina(?) Limo. They have Gull wing doors for the center section, and race seats with 5 point harness stacked behind each other. I took some pics, will look for a link , however. Interesting take.
What? No glass bottom?
Nice work guys!

An yet another idea.
By the way, I've got a rear trunk lid with luggage rack you can have, if wanted.
Attached image(s)
This looks like an amusement park ride. I bet if that door feel on you you would be dead!

Nice haircut Mark!
Today we finished the rear floorpan and did some cleanup on the crossmember.
There was a lot of fab-work involved and it took the whole day, but it was well worth it. The transition between the rear floorpan and the front floorpan turned out really nice and it'll enable us to do a clean install of the custom center tunnel piece needed.
The hole:
Restoration Design floor pan used as a donor for patches:
McMark welding:
Old heater tube outlets removed:
Patch welded in:
Me grinding down some of the weld on the crossmember:
Cleaned up and primered:
Center portion finished:
And the final shot, voila!
This is really neat!
Are you going to have front and rear heat? Heat is always nice...
VW gas heater may be in order. The floor looks nice! Strange without the rear tunnel.
Keep up the good work!
But since the heater tube aren't connected, the whole long becomes a heat-distribution-box. With the oval outlets being the heater vents. An Eberspacher would be a GREAT addition if we can find a place to mount it. Defrost is always a problem on cold mornings.
I see McMark finally made Andy work!
Looks great guys!
Poor Andy.
Go boys GO
This weekend was not picture worthy.
Lots of labor but mostly unspectacular prep work for next weekend.
We scraped off all the tar from the floor-pans to get a better idea of what amount of rust might lurk underneath. They were surprisingly solid and only need a few patches.
I also removed parts of the handbrake system. We will run a metal tube next to the long and use a custom cable to simply hook the front handle to the stock splitter in the back.
I cut all the patch pieces needed to finally connect the front targa bar with the rear door jambs to get a solid, permanent connection. This should really stiffen up the center portion of the car.
We decided to change our plan of attack a bit and get the car drivable as soon as we're finished with the major metal work.
The reason being that we want to be able to find (and eliminate) any problems related to the chassis itself that would only be obvious when driving the car.
You can only test so much while it's sitting on jack-stands.
Once we feel confident about the chassis and the basic mechanics, we can switch gears and start making her look pretty.
Andy
PS: If you want to swing by, the next Limo workday will be Saturday, 03/13 at McMarks shop in Sonoma ...
This mockup by Johannes is pretty close to what we have in mind. As you can see in the second image below, the center section between the two cars is a bit wider as in the mockup.
I really like the look of the small rectangular side window and the rectangular b-pillar. It'll flow nicely with the lines.
The side window will be the full width of the original triangle window.
One problem area will be the transition between the two cars. The rear of the front door is actually a good 1" lower than the front of the rear door. This part will be tricky.
We also figured out how to have a straight roofline and still be able to retain both targa tops. We even figured out how to fit two tops in the rear trunk without cutting the trunk!
Andy
Going to sit on my ass in a cabin and drink, maybe go snowshoeing. After dealing with Andy for TWO days this weekend, I need a vacation.
Quick mockup of what we have in mind ...
Andy
Attached thumbnail(s)
Two removable tops Andy? Should be quite the machine when done.
The front targa top will end more in line with the front edge of the sail panel. That will avoid a weird step in the roll bar top.
ROB!! Got your tix bro. In the bag. Looking forward to Yopu and Beckster at the steakhouse (or one of another hundred venues I have on hand around here)
We got the front targa bar tied into the rear door jambs yesterday!
No pics yet as they are on McMarks camera and he's somewhere in a cabin in Tahoe right now, probably with a massive hangover ...
Andy
It's gettin' there.
The cabin was GREAT!
Looks good!
Oh, I meant to remind you: put in seat belt bolts.
-Steve
Nice! I really like the front door idea we talked about. That is going to resolve a huge issue.
It should have suicide doors.
Rich
ip: You guys are crazy... In the best kin of way. Still planning on having it done in time for WCR?? I hope i get to ride in this beast on day
I ran across this pic today and it reminded me of the Limo project. What is the latest?
Couple weekends off.
Oh BTW, Andy I found your tool box........
Cool!
I'll PM you my mailing address right now ...
Andy
Sorry, I don't really have it, all I have is a picture.
I hear Brad has some time now that he's shutting down his websites....ask him to come up and you can bury the hatchet.....somewhere....
Great work day! Andy will post pics when he gets home. We got a ton done and hit a milestone by getting the side walls complete, including the seat belt mount plates. Yippee!
And here are the pics ...
Andy
BTW, how youse maniacs gonna register that thing? Limos require special plates and inspections.......
No disagreement....but don't try to rent it out...
That's just awesome....
Not that anyone plans on getting into an accident, but the 914 seat belt won't function correctly the way it is mounted. There is a pendulum inside that swings from rear to front when mounted in the stock location that "catches" the seat belt cog to keep it from unreeling in the event of an accident. As it is mounted now, it will swing from side to side.
There is also another cam that engages when the belt unreels rapidly so I guess technically it will half-function.
A retractable belt from a 70's VW Bug would have the pendulum situated correctly for this application.
It's getting 944 belts. No problem.
You two are sick and twisted and I love it!
Hey! Stop it Dammit, I'm trying to get seven in a row here. Did I do it?
Hah!
That looks different from the set I got back in'62....
I would honestly have to call this a "914 sedan". 4 doors and all, but not as long as a limo.
Add about one more 914 length and it would be a limo. I don't believe it needs special registration unless it is going to function as a service limo. You would need a TCP# and you could get a 1ZZ#### license plate.
I think what you guys are doing is cool.
I'm glad I don't need to sit at my computer and pick apart every little fucking detail looking for flaws.
Nice work Andy and Mark!
Sick, sick, sick....but way cool!
Some more pics from this lascht weekend ...
Cracked long:
More bracing on the longs:
Digging into the fender transition area ...
No safety glasses or gloves!
Quick and dirty mockup with lots of aluminum tape.
This area will need some creative metal work to look good.

Looks like a fun work of art...
Get it pin striped.
Rich
Hey! You were supposed to take a picture after I put on the glasses and gloves...

you guys need a small plasma cutter.
Have a small plasma cutter. I don't like the warped metal, or dealing with the dribbles on the edge. I've gotten really handy with a cutoff wheel in the last 10 years. It's my #1 most used tool (okay, aside from the 13mm wrench).
One day you might need an MRI and regret not wearing saftey glasses
Following with great interest. Excellent work and very entertaining. Thank you.
Not sure if anyone has offered yet, but do you need a set of these?

Another great day in Limo Land ™
We got the drivers side frame work finished. Yeah!
Here's a before shot of the glory hole:

View towards the front:
And straight up:
We cut a groove along the bottom of the long and added vertical reinforcement plates that were welded to the angle iron on top and butt-welded to the bottom.
We added 5 plates over a total length of about 16 inches.

Andy
This is awesoe! I can't wait to see the project completed!
I'll be glad to be done with the frame/structure work. We should have all that buttoned up next weekend.
Mmmm goober welds.
Gotta crank up the heat when welding 1/8" steel! (doesnt help that your welding upside down...)
Awesome progress, Thats the hard and critical part right there... Good final result!
Turned up all the way and there was no room for the 'torch'.
We'll be working next Sat if you wanna show me how it's done.
How about cutting a few holes on the side of the longs and welding from there?
Nice work guys!
Work was a bit slow today. It took me 3 hours just to drive from Oakland to Sonoma! Damn bay area holiday traffic jam madness ...
Anyways, here are the pics.
We started work on the roof-line by raising the middle targa bar about 1".
That allows for a straight metal roof section between the front targa top and the rear targa top.
Because the 914 roof slopes down towards the rear we would otherwise have a weird dip in the roof-line.
Next weekend, we'll build the metal framework for the center section of the roof.
Andy
Will the string be used as the intercom system? Nice werk fellers, you guys got tallent.
Nice "Lines"
Keep up the good, er, Great work!
It could have gone either way... It might have been a hang out day because the autocross at Infinion was just 20 minutes away with Holiday weekend traffic or work on the limo... Andy was the strong one. I think Mark was leaning toward the hang out day.
I wish I had my camera with me when I told Scott Yeaman that Andy and Mark were building a 914 limo. The look on his face was pure amazement.
I got the replacement control arm bead blasted for my car after it's WCR tangle with a rock. Mark will powdercoat it later.
Are those threaded rods holding up the roof? (pre weld pictures)
It looks like you welded a nut to the roll bar, then adjusted with a threaded rod...
Oh, and the project is still looking great! I've been enjoying the build, thanks again for sharing.
cool project - will be interesting to see how it ends up when it is finished
You guys are Crazy!!!!!
And I mean that in a good way. Man, I can't wait to get a ride in that. The stuff of legends!
Jim
Yeah, we used threaded rod to set the height of the rollbar. The top was latched on, front and back to keep everything stable. Then we ran a string from the front of the car to the back of the car to approximate the desired roofline. Then we brought up the targa bar to get close to the line, exactly where we wanted it. With this technique, we could test different heights, look at things from across the room, and take measurements to make sure everything was matched.
The donor parts car has arrived ....
Andy
This project needed a bit of a kick start. I think this will do the trick...
Attached image(s)
You got an extra case with it??? Hmmmm... What diabolical projects could we do next??? Oh, and how did you get from Napa to Hwy. 5 and back to Sonoma by 10am?
This car is going to hit the show circuit for sure, when not being utilized by members.
The six isn't actually going to power the limo. It's just a fancy looking seat.
I still have those rear bilsteins for you. Im gonna wait till my car is painted then Ill get them to you if you still want them
Mark and Andy,
Cool build thread, can't wait to see it finished.
Dave
Andy, absolutely.
So, did anything get done today? Do tell oh Big Brained One!
Yes.
Here are a few pics. I got off to a late start due to me signing the lease to my new house this AM.
We did some more work on the roof-line and the sail-panel/side-window area today.
Unfortunately, the front angle and rear angle of a 914 side-window are not the same. We came up with a compromise where the center sail panel will be slightly wider on top and the front rectangular window on the rear door will also be slightly wider on top.
That will take care of the difference in angle.
Below are the pics of the guts of the new sail-panel ...
Andy
Absolutely love it! Good work guys!
Nice work guys!
We also came up with an oil tank plan for the six. I had a few ideas that I've been mulling over for years and we talked them out and changed a few things and now we have a plan. Exciting things to come.
Let's see a current side view of the whole car!
project is coming along nicely!!!
project is coming along nicely!!!
The Bilsteins are yours!
Will be delivering two doors this Saturday . . .

Been away for a bit..
So, how is it progressing?
I'm prepping the engine bay for the aftermarket bulkhead mount right now. We should be ready to test fit the engine next weekend. ...
WOW !!! that limo will rock ! ... You are the master !
Damn. That limo is gonna haul!
Andy, you should come get the paperwork at some point. My emails and PMs don't seem to be getting through.
More baby-steps ...
I finished the basic structure of the second sail panel today.
That means we can now weld those up and make them look nice.
The same goes for the center roof section. We'll be able to finish the structural for that next time ...
Ser Gut!
This is going to be a very sweet ride, you guys are real Craftsmen!!!!
Need more limo porn!
Coolio. Nice progress.
You guys flat out ROCK!!!
C'mon... its just photoshopping.....
That's a fine looking motor
Is there a blueprint plan for this build, or are you just building by trial?
Don't forget , between SirAndy and McMark they have 4 eyeballs!!!!!!
Jack / Jaxdream
Here's some motivation for you...
Coach Lights??? So many options ...

Ha, traditional for sure.
Spiral man

OMG BUBBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McMark claimed (tweet) you guys are back working on it today...
So, where are the pics?????

Schedule another limo work-party
I am in the middle of a move, need to find a new rental in Marin, and have 914 parts to donate. Good weather this Saturday means final PCA AX for me, but bad weather and I would join youz guyz indoors and bring parts.
That motor rocks!
Your idea of coach lights reminded me of a traumatic expierience of many years ago. I once saw a 50's/60's vintage Rolls Royce, (possibly a Silver Wraith) in black with a white padded vinyl top and Landau irons.
Sorry for the delay. The limo work day on Sunday wore me out enough to let me get sick. So I've been sleeping the last few days away with a cold.
Our first task on Sunday was to strengthen the rear 'window frame' section so that should any passenger try and grab onto that area, it's less likely to bend something. By adding in these triangulation pieces, we got it surprisingly rigid. I was worried we weren't going to get it strong enough, but now I'm more than pleased with how it turned out.
We added an strengthening beam between to two sail panel sections to help tie them together as well as added another weld seam at the joint between the two sections. This area isn't going to see a lot of stresses, so super strength isn't important.
And finally we 'skinned' one side of the mid panel. It looks really odd this way, but once we fill in the fender gaps and add on the roofing section, it'll look better. This is where the limo lights will go.
After Sunday's work day we decided to stop work on the aesthetic portion of the project, and refocus on the functionality portion. So next weekend we will be doing a lot of measuring and planning to get closer to having a proven running car. I've already called Terry cable and confirmed that we can have custom length cables produced for the throttle and clutch cables. We plan on getting the suspension and brakes all cleaned up, powder coated and prettied up. We plan on cleaning painting and undercoating the wheel wells while the suspension is off, that way we can tape those areas off when we paint and still leave the braking system intact. I'd like to bleed it once, and then leave it alone for good. After next weekend we'll have a better idea of what we can accomplish on a work weekend, but as mentioned it will probably consist of cleaning the rear fender wells, engine bay, and under the rear trunk to prepare those sections for finishing. As well as pulling the motor and transmission and stripping all the rest of the trim and parts off of our parts car
Nice work. Hope you feel better!
Time to pick a color ... Not surprisingly, Raspberry has my vote ...
Black:
Dark Blue:
Green:
Raspberry:
Red:
Yellow:
If you want to play with it yourself, here's the photoshop file.
It has a saved selection for the background images that you can use to create your own color layer ...
http://www.914world.com/cantnamethisdownloads/LimoConcept.psd
Black, duh. The green one reminds me of money
I vas sinking, maybe make the rear doors suicide doors? Probably too much work, but it woudl be cool.
Do like the VW rabbit and paint each panel a different color
Dark blue. Haven't you EVER seen a dark blue 914 Andy?
Not rasperry. Maybe red or silver. That is one freaking looooong rocker pannel!
How about the Limosicle? Still have Phoenix red trim but with the Delphi or Viper green
Silver...absolutely.
First thought i had was Silver
Um, metallic red?
Plaid
I think silver wouild look great.
Did I miss what you are going to run for wheels? I am picturing 5 bolt steelies and flat caps - classy.
Is there a date for the build party?
Silver would look cool!
How about saturn yellow and lime green ?? Mark Epstein has a motor for it
you could name it the Mintberry crunchmobile
C'mon -- SF Giants orange! I'd pay big bux to to be dropped off at One Willie Mays Plaza in a teener limo!!!
It's a limo, Black of course!Second thought, black shows all your bodywork sins, silver is more painter friendly.
Martini? Racing stripe?
Grasshopper? It is a limited addition (only one) and there wasnt officially one made in that scheme, right?
What's wrong with you people? Don't you realize it'll hurt the collector value of the car if you paint it anything other than the original factory color?
(of course, that might require a nice blend between the front & rear donors...)
Tangerine !!!
... Let's do it seventies ! ...
...

I think the Dr has it, Martini!!!
Purple with lots of neon! and it's Time to start on the INTERIOR!

ultra glossy black

BLACK
I choose Aubergine!
If the classic black limo look is not where you guys want to go, I would suggest going with any classic color/racing scheme from one of the classic/iconic 914's.
Any of the 70's racing teams would be cool.
Or maybe it could be styled after the 914 given to Ferry Porsche.
What ever you guys decide on, I'm sure it will be cool.
whit, pull the stripes starting at the top of the turn signals, and run them straight back along the top edge tapering to a point near the cowel. There was a 935 with a similar look

Attached image(s)
Gulf colored paint scheme?
Either that or I'm really liking either Bumble Bee, Creamsicle, or Grasshopper.
harlequin like the old Golfs?
Attached image(s)
Nice thinking, Drew. I could get into aubergine.
I like Grasshopper too.
If anyone wants to show up this Sunday and strip the parts car, come on down.
Paint it like the Pink Pig?
Or how about the paisley 917 paint job?
I'd vote for a Grasshopper Limo!
So imagine if the car was done in the 70's and was a support vehicle for the factory race teams and painted to match the transporter and race car. If I were building one that's the direction I would be taking. But I'm kind of like that.

White Porsche limos are sooooooooo common.....
(no, it's not a photoshop, it resides about 40 miles up the road from me)
You need another color....
Now a gulf blue and orange limo.......
Attached image(s)
Ken is that from the Taj?
Ravenna green is totally 70's and very photogenic.
BLACK limo's have class. A black Porsche 914 limo would be classy. Ya want to put racing stripes on it? Then why not some neon lights under the rocker panels and a really, really loud "ricer" type exhaust. You have a choice between a classy project that will draw an admiring crowd or something that looks like a high school project that the 15 year olds will love.
Cheers, Elliot
I finally re-read the entire thread taking everything into consideration.
The Project: Great demonstration of skills, thinking, winging it, and engineering know how. Great job with eyeballs, straight edge, metal, tape, and string. A great build to see how sheet metal is worked on a 914 including building stress points and developing ideas while on the build cycle. Learned alot and nice to see people are dedicated to getting a conversion done in a short and reasonable time frame. Great Job!!
I really liked the constructive ideas offered and makes even an observer think about your project and how you are putting it together.
I am looking forward to seeing The Project when I get to Bay Area next June. Keep up the good work and hope to see what the final paint scheme. I like the idea the Doctor suggests: a one of a kind deserving special treatment within the Porsche car family.
Thanks for letting me reading the thread.
Steve Hurt
How about the Janis Joplin look ?

Got some more work done on the limo today. We halted progress on the body and started focusing on making the thing move under its own power. No sense in getting the body perfect, if it doesn't drive well.
So we did some brainstorming, ate some pizza, and then extended the clutch tube and throttle tube. We used the tube from our parts car, so it's a perfect size match. We then clamped a section of sheet metal around the junction and brazed the whole thing together. This'll be plenty strong.
Now we just need to order custom length cables from Terry Cable and we can check these two off our list.
Attached image(s)
Next Weekend - Dec 5.
We will be finishing up some welding/fabrication in the rear center tunnel. But we could really use some help pulling the motor and trans out of the parts car. We need this transmission to test fit the motor and finish fabricating a few more pieces. We could use 2 or 3 people for this.
For a tranz, do you suppose a box with 4 short gears and one tall/stock 5th for freeway would be desirable? Let me know if you want me to do up a box for this
I got nothing except these pics of McMark playing with his torch ...
If you decide on a color you could jamb the engine bay an then you wouldn't need to pull the engine later when it comes time to paint the car. Just an idea'er.
Tomorrow will be another Limo Sunday™. Ya'all are welcome to schwing by if you are in the area ...
It's alive!!!!
Well, sorta.
Today was pretty productive. Lennie stopped by to help, so we got a lot done.
We cut the parts car in half and removed the engine and transmission. We'll be using the transmission in the limo.
We then hooked up the extended wiring harness, added the gauges and tail lights, threw in a battery and voila!
No smoke. No blown fuses.
Taillights came on as did the headlights and dash lights. The blinker relay was clicking but no blinkers. Probably a ground issue.
Pull the transmission out of the parts... uh... car.

andy, if i can talk kenny and my other son into a build... still a basic roller? what kinda $ do you want?
mike
Mike,
Im planning on doing a trailer build, however probably wont get to it for a while... I'd be more than happy to help and have some idea's myself to making it work the best. Besides this looks like a way better chassis than what I have in my backyard...
p.s., melodie cringed ... this could to be fun
Andy's 1/2 off sale.
I think I didn't see this pic in any of the 28 pages of this thread.
I couldn't find too much info on this or any other pics, but it is indeed a 914 limo, looks like adriatic blue. For your inspiration :
That picture was the inspiration to this car, what started the joke that turned into a physical object.
Correct Andy?
Found the thread!
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=2991
Looks like Mark S. did the initial image and then i played with several different versions of the center roof section ...
June 2003
you move fast...
Wow, it's been over a month since we last worked on the Limo ...
Well, here are the (crappy cell phone) pictures from today.
The front of the Limo had a large cutout in the trunk floor either for a oil cooler shroud or AC condenser. In any case, the hole had to go. I cut a replacement panel from the parts car, cleaned it up and welded it in.
The hole:
The patch panel:
Rough cut of the panel:
Trimmed:
Welded and primered:
I still have to do a second pass on the welding to close the pinholes and grind the welds a little bit nicer. But that's for another day.
I finished the design work for our custom oil tank as well. Gotta send it out for laser/waterjet cutting, then weld it all together. B)
What do you think about using seam sealer to fill the pinholes?
It's a really small time investment to do it right. The seam sealer isn't water proof forever and would only last a year or two of regular driving before you're doing it again and wasting MORE time than it would have taken to do it right.
Has anybody heard for Karl lately?
-Peter
Nice work Andy and Mark... I can only imagine what might be in store for the front trunk of the 914 limo
This is awesome guys!! But, am I the only one imagining Herbie the love bug when thinking of welding two cars together? I'm picturing the front of the car turning while the back half continues on straight, or the back half surpassing the front half in a race.
Jenny!!!!!
Hi there! I'm here for the week, until school starts again on the 26th. Mostly lurking though. Lots of new names I don't recognize.
Oh sweet! You guys kept my smiley!
What are you guys thinking??? A limo with no air conditioning?????
It's got 6-80 AC! Two tops, four windows, and 80 MPH.
Hi Jenny!

What's up for this weekend? Indoor limo projects? At the shop at all?
We are dying for some photo updates here!
waiting.........
I saw it Sunday. All snuggled up next to McMark's Cellette Bench. I donated the factory carpet from my car and the door panels. My carpet will clean up nicely with a power wash shampoo... Let's keep the donations coming! This thing will be SWEET when it is done!
No work on the chassis in awhile. Both Andy and I have been super busy. BUUUUUT, I have a significant 'part' on the way to me. Some assembly required, but it's going to get us much closer to driving...
We need an update!
Will it be ready for prom season?
I just got around to seeing this thread the other day. Cool to see one actually getting built!
I photo-shopped my wife's '71 a few years ago just to get an idea of what one would look like ...
...I'm in a givving mood.
"Fasthonda" would have a heart-attack if he saw my post.
What else do you guys need?
keep it smallish please.
Wingnut86
OOH! I actually got to see this last weekend. Pretty impressive to see you had a car cover that fit it . What a cool project. Like most projects it gets to sit alot of the time. At least it isn't on jackstands
I'll try and snap a few pics this Sunday when I visit McMark.
Thanks for letting me "donate" all those parts after the swap meet!
When is the next build party. Need to get this done before WCR 2012...
An I thought patchin up my hellhole was a project!
What's going with this project?
The shop is overflowing with paying projects and Andy's doing the work of four people until he can hire three more programmers at work. I hate to see it sit, but real work comes first.
...sounds like you need 3 account-able, 32 hrs per week interns.
No one at the local Tech School or College needs a guaranteed A for their final semester?
Oops...
P.S. Very cool how everyone has a little Smiley...I found mine too - Dumb-Ass??? OK, who's the wise-ass...
Oddly enough, I felt the need to cross post this....

Be sure to scroll back to page 1!
Seems like great minds think alike.
Paging Dr. Evil!! Call for Dr. Evil!!
I've got a bead on an EM corvair coupe. More to follow.....
for the two-year anniversary of this thread/project...
Holy cow. Time flies...
Sound like some pretty lame excuses to me.
Clearly neither of you are drinking enough beer.
Will this limo ever make it to WCR???
I was at the shop last week. It didn't look ready.
Hey Mark, GA motor headed your way soon. I need a motor for the Teener to get my mind off NOT getting the bus! It was drama on top of drama! Cut my losses.
Great Project fellas! With a 16 page thread I expected to see it moving on its own by now! It's pretty awesome, though. I wish I were out there so I could help in some way.
The Delorean is finished...
I'm in for a build party weekend...
Just noticed - DeLoreans had 4-lug wheels?
I'm in...
They should do it up as a Back to the Future limo....
Just remember that the delorean limo took 300 years to build and they just bought it back from the future to show off
Did that build party weekend ever occur this summer?!
bump? Looks like some good progress over the last 2 years...
Bumping this up to the top. Any progress as of late? Need anything (besides time)?
I GOTTA KNOW!!!!
I need sixnotfour and rick-918s and scotty_b (etc) to all converge on Sonoma and we'll have a big welding party.
Or just find me 2 or 3 good employees and I'll have time to finish it myself.
I do need a vacation...
Growing a business to the point where your managing it rather than owning a job is so difficult. Finding employees who work as if they are working for themselves and who have the skills to do the work properly is the challenge. It takes time to train youngsters and you loose them along the way. I sent several kids to school to do CAD and CNC and then lost them to aerospace manufacturers.
Maybe we can look at an October build party. We should be able to get most everything done in a couple days with enough people here.
I wonder if we have members with airline miles or hotel discounts that could make it easy for our Welding Crew to get here.
Everyone that visits your shop and bugs you while you are trying to work should be required to weld 6 inches of the seam.
Either you get them to do it, or you get more time to work...then you can do it.
I'll bring my MIG to the build party. I just need power. Pretty sure I could rig something...
I'm in. Why wait until October?
I can bring passable welding skills (questionable) and lots of encouragement and help. I can also have lunch at The Girl and the Fig.
I could be in for a day of helping. not a welder but I can grind on metal, pop the top off of beers, grill food, go for parts...
Do you want that set of Koenig's for the build? You just have to have them re-done.
I can do October
Just not the first. (Wifes bday)
I can bring a mig with me as well and you'll be hard pressed to find something I cant weld.. Damn good grinder too
I'm with Drew. And I can usually take stuff apart.
Pick a date Mark. We (those of us who can) will be there.
Sounds like we've got the beginnings of something. Looks like I need to spend some time getting a work plan together and looking at the calendar to pick a date.
This could work...
this is awesome
Well..........it's October?
Jeff
How about posting the most recent picture of the beast?
Not much has changed from that last picture (post #452)
ScottyB and I were talking back and forth about coming out but I fell off the pace. Life has it's ways of distracting us.
Yeah, that could work on Sunday. The next weekend will be the trans clinic Sat/Sun and so both those days could be work days as well.
If I can make it down for the tranny clinic. I'd be up for working on the limo! I'll just be coming to watch & BS. So I could at least help stand in it to see if it buckles
Jamie...you driving? I'm planning on going over Saturday and could meet you in Sacramento and caravan over.
Forgive me, but I really don't feel like reading 34 pages. What engine did you guys decide on?
Now that sounds like progress, next Sunday and the tranny clinic weekend
I'll be there both days of the tranny clinic, only one tranny to build, I'd be happy to put some time on the Limo.......if there's anything I can do.
Don't worry Mike....I'll bring some beer, Mark probably drank yours.
Jeff
The engine is going to be a 2.7 six...
If it does work out that all of the out-of-town talent comes in, I'd suggest checking Craigslist in the vacation rentals section. You may be able to get a house you all can share. Local hotels are $200+ / nicht. Unless you go 30 minutes away to American Canyon. Then it is still over $140+ / nicht...
Jeff, Brett (Biosurfer) lives in Sacramento and sounds like he is coming down...
There are 2 Newcastle Brown and about 18 BlueMoon.
Extra points for people who bring amazing craft beers for me.
That's worth 6.5 points.
I've got a mig welder, full bottle, I could bring if needed.
Also have a couple of roasts in the freezer if you want to do roast beef sandwiches fire up the BBQ.....is Jim coming.
Jeff
For Hotels, you could try Fairfield, not that far might be cheaper?
What about Napa, should be something reasonable ?
Jeff
The BBQ is always ready to go.
Ya, where am I staying over the work weekend?
Saw Motel 6 right off 80 in Cordelia for $56, there's also a comfort inn and a best western there for $65, and $75. Only about 20 min drive to Sonoma from there.
I have some homemade apricot and plum wine I can bring also if anyones interested.
Might as well make a party of it.
Jeff
I may just sleep/pass out at the garage
That better come with a handy, you bastard.
Or a couple latex gloves
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQfD92sb-qU
Autocross on Saturday, Jeff. I think I can come up on Sunday. I'm pretty good at taking stuff apart, putting it back together - maybe.
There's a good craft brewery in town, I'll stop and get some crafty beer.
Jim
Anyone know of some good camping options near the shop? I'll be bringing my hotel with me ('78 westy)!
So what is the official date(s) of this build party?
10-13-13?
Or during the tranny clinic?
Or both?
So do you guys have an idea of what you want to accomplish at this build party? Or are we just brainstorming ideas of what to do when we get there
We're going to try and get the brakes on and bled, stainless fuel lines installed, electrical system tested, hell hole sealed up, and gas tank resealed.
I've got acid cleaning the tank now, and I've got to talk to Eric about getting some calipers.
We got quite a lot of stuff done this weekend, mostly welding and some electrical.
First a couple of pics showing the sail panel area and the transition from the front car to the rear car.
Welding the drivers side sail panel
And tacked in place, next will be the bottom piece with the compound curve
Passenger side, all welded up and body filler applied, ready for sanding
And now for the bad news.
After cleaning out the hell hole area, i ended up with this
Looks like we'll be needing an engine shelf and a back half floor pan ...
well then, here's another one

or...
Nice progress guys!
Rainy season's started, and it was looking awfully sad and forlorn last weekend. It's quite a thing to behold in person, though perhaps not *quite* the Sonoma Ekranoplan...
Hmmm
I'm most curious as to how this creature is going to be shifted, or is an auto tranny going to be fitted? C5 vette auto tranny comes to mind as the easiest solution. Also curious about the roof- multi piece or 1 giant targa top? Custom soft top perhaps?
Unfortunately, the limo project was canceled and it was sent to the crusher last week.
Check the date on that last post.
Well ... is this a
If you could use some help with it, I can come up for a day or two. I can handle tools fairly well and my welding skills have been described as ummm... "adequate".
Why are we worrying about a clutch cable when we still have to push it around by hand?
Seriously, it might be time for another build party. That way it will be ready for the next WCR in 2026...
Is this limo gonna be going on any track days? Stuffing an air cooled 6 would preserve the brand, but a V8 would move it along nicely! I love the idea of a 914 Limo. Just saw the NYT story on the Checker Cab reunion, and there was a stretch Checker there. Everybody loves a limo.
Well, yes
I know there’s been a recurring request for updates and I finally have one, although it’s not what everyone was hoping for. After discussing the options and reality of the rest of this build, SirAndy and I have decided that we’ve devoted all the resources to this project that we can. We’ve both become extremely busy with real life work over the last few years ( ). Neither of us has the time to devote to finishing this project.
We talked to a few people at WCR Tahoe II, but nothing panned out. So we’re hoping that we can find someone to pass the torch, in the true sense of what this build was originally supposed to be - a community project. There’s a lot of little work that needs to be completed, including welding patch work, before the chassis is complete. Then there’s the drivetrain that needs to be sorted out. It’s got both 4 and 6 cyl mounts. The wiring is pretty much complete and the brake lines are already extended.
If there is some person or group of people that would be interested in continuing the next phase of the build, post here or PM me. We’re not looking to sell the project, just pass it on to the next section of the community that has the time and motivation to proceed.
How much for shipping to 46615?
PM sent
Won't fit on my trailer.
It will fit on mine
My wife said "NO!"...
PM Replied. I think we've got something brewing.
This actually makes me really happy. It's a community car, and now it'll be a community build project.
I'm kind of tossing my hat in the ring here... It's a cool project that I always wanted to be a part of. Toe is in the water.
AAAAHHHHHH lWhere's the Limo???!!!!
Don't need no stinking Scotty. We can paint it on our own.

Light snow winter so far. Knock on wood... I have to clear a few things out around here so maybe late spring I will do some welding.
Attached image(s)
Any chance this will be ready for WCR?
I hear crickets!
That was like the best come back, I have nothing
Gonna put a cheby in it?
The Limo Project has found a new home!
