914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Modified BMW Rear View Mirror

Posted by: DBCooper Jan 11 2010, 03:35 PM

OK, this is a test. Years ago, late '90s before 914Club, there was another 914 bulletin board that seemed popular, but then shut down. I really hate to admit this publicly but I'm getting old, my memory's shot, and I can remember everything about that board but still can't spit out the damned name.

On that board there was a description of how someone modified what I think were BMW 320 rear view mirrors for use in a 914. The modified mirror bolted into the place where the 914's center clips for the sun visors go now, rather than being glued onto the windshield, and had provisions for the sun visors to clip into the mirror. Anyone remember that? Or even better, remember which model BMW it was and what needed to be done to modify the mirror?

I believe the good Dr Evil will know exactly what you're referring to.
Seem to recall a "how to post" from him awhile back.

Go to http://www.archive.org

Look on there for either http://www.914fan.net --OR-- http://www.dgi.net/914

Those were two old sites that had lots of good 914 info on them, and they have been archived by archive.org.

Yup, I made them. Someone else took over and was using MBZ mirrors, but I believe his core source dried up.

That first one Daniel, that's the one. Once it's finished it seems like it's made to fit there. Can't really see the details of the Camry mirror, but it seems like the BMW mirror fits better.

Thanks, Dave. love that Way Back machine. The dgi.net/914 site is the one I was thinking of, and I can't understand why that mnemonic address didn't just roll off my tongue. The link is exactly that site, but it's nothing like I remember it. Boy your memory is a traitorous thing.

Aw Herr Doktor, no inventory left? I'd love to reward you for your dedication.

Thanks all.

hmm, I may have to try that! My damn mirror keeps falling off! mad.gif I stuck it on using the double sided tape that I used to put up the 3M shower caddy this time but I don't think it will last long. Might be the cold and the fact that I am driving her in the snow. screwy.gif

Paul Illick was the guy that made those most recently. I think his screen name is 65 Lotus.

I was gonna hit up a Pick-A-Part this weekend for something else. I'll check to see if i find any 6 series mirrors and make one and maybe make a small batch if demand is high.

We miss your entertaiment, humor, and company here in SmeLL-A. BTW Mike how did you drill the hole for the visor holders? Dremel w/ a titanium tip? Are these aluminum?
