914World.com _ 914World Garage _ My Six Conversion

Posted by: Ericv1 Feb 15 2010, 07:24 AM

O kay, this is the year I start and complete my conversion. The first initial question involves the clutch disc and flywheel. I have a 69 S-Spec engine with a 225mm clutch disc and flywheel. The transmission that it was mated to most recentley was a 901 from a 1970 911. Is this too big for a 914 gearbox. They are also 901's if I remember correctly but are 215mm. Thanks, any help is appreciated. smile.gif

The stock '69 flywheel/clutch is 215mm and is a direct bolt on to a 901.
The S spec engine will put out about 160-170hp so this flywheel is perfect.
You may have a '71 pressure plate/ clutch assembly.
Is it push or pull and do you have a picture?

If it was mated to a 911/00 transmission ('70 - '71) only, you can use the package you have, but the transmission will have to be converted for use in a 914. You flip the ring gear, have it converted to a side shift and add the 914 tail cone. This gives you the ability to use the 225 mm clutch. Retail on the clutch package for this unit is $800.

Other than that, as Mark says, use the early 215 mm flywheel and a stock 914 transmission.

Hi Mark,

It's a "pull style" throw out bearing that is mounted to the pressue plate. From what I've read, they only went with this setup in 1970. So, if I have a 70 flywheel, I need a 69 correct? Thanks.

Yes the 911 '69 assembly then it's a total bolt on for the 914-901.
I'm not 100% but I think the clutch is just a stock 914/4.

I have this full setup ('69 flywheel, PP and disc and hardware) in the for sale section. PM me if interested.

Close enough if you use the 914 2.0L clutch. It is the same as the 914/6 clutch except the pressure plate on the 914/6 was rated at a few more pounds of clamping force.

Just so you know, if you convert the 911 tranny for use in a 914, you'll have to use a different clutch cable. I believe I used one from a '72 911. You can also modify a 914 tranny to work with the '70-'71 225 mm 911 clutch by moving the pivot pin to the 911 location. This is a bit difficult, but it CAN be done on a vertical mill. Still need the cable. BTW, the last release arm I bought was the last one in the Porsche inventory, and it was close to 300 bucks. They're a wear item.

I can't wait. I had it running this summer in the 911 and it pulled strong in that car up to 7,000 rpms. It most likely would have went further but I did not want to push it. Thanks everyone for the input. I'll probably get an earlier flywheel as that is the simplest solution. I can then use my pressure plate and disc which don't have much wear on them.

I've got a 914 tranny that has the pivot pin relocated. Just have the case only. Also have the 911 cable, pivot arm bolt and arm. All bought new and with little use. Would make someone a deal on them.....

Do you need to change the guide tube to 911 and will
the 914 clutch pedal shaft work or does that need the
70-71 911 clutch pedal shaft as well?

Posted by: Eric_Shea Feb 15 2010, 10:18 PM

I have that tranny. Flipped R&P. Short gears. Side Shift. 914 Nose Cone. 75 Clutch Cable. 225mm clutch and PP. 2.5L six.

Yes, I did change the guide tube and it is still on the converted nose cone. I did also change the clutch pedal shaft as well. It is still on the car. There is a difference in the angle of the shaft between the 914 & 911.....
