914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT 928 vs SBC questions

Posted by: seanery Mar 27 2004, 03:33 PM

I'm considering doing something strange with a 928 motor, but I need a some answers. If anyone knows the answers I'd apreciate the info.

1. What are the dimensions LxWxH of a 928 motor?
2. What are the dimensions LxWxH of a SBC?
3. Did 928s use a transaxle?
4. How much does a 928 engine weigh?
5. What does a typical SBC weigh?
6. Can you mate a GM auto or a 6 spd manual with a 928 engine?

Thanks,
I'm sure there will be more.

3) yes. this will probably have an impact on 6)...

i've heard the 928 autotrans was made by (licensed from?) Mercedes, so perhaps there is hope down that path.

since the transaxle doesn't bolt to the engine, but there are in fact a bunch of other parts in between, it'd seem there'd be ample oppportunity for conversion parts.

i'm kinds surprised we haven't seen more SBC's in 928's but i gather the reason most 928's get parked is intermittent weirdnesses in the mile or so of wire to and from all the electrical gizmos...

I'm actually considering a 928 powered Model A or 32/33 Ford Pickup Hot Rod.
My dad is building a 32 roadster, I'm thinking about a Brookville bodied 31 extended cab pickup unless I can find a good/clean 32/33.

I was kinda thinking 928 in the Mustang since it needs a new engine anyway. Much better than an real FoMoCo engine.

A chevy in a ford is just communist. headbang.gif

The 928 motor would be neat, other wise do a stroked FI SBF or a Lima Motor.

My uncle built a '32 Chev roadster. More cool than FoMoCo in MHO.

I'll see if I can find a pic.

If it doesn't get the 928, I'll actually go large, either a Hemi or Max Wedge or a 502 chevy.

None of this will happen til the damn race car gets here and finished this summer.
