914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Retro '75 build

Posted by: DanT Mar 14 2010, 10:50 PM

So my latest build is a '75 Appearance Group car.
Car is currently in the body shop being stripped to bare metal.
Motor and tranny were just rebuilt...

going for a retro look.
Rivs, Porsche negative side stripe, Monza exhaust, Vittaloni mirrors and a few interior items to keep it '70s happy11.gif

got a load of stuff from MikeK (914magazine) today.
4 very nice Rivs
2.0L heat exchangers with associated heater stuff
Monza exhaust
2.0L muffler hanger
Koni front struts
spare trigger points
Custom pedal board
original grain vinyl for the sail panels and targa bar

here are some pics of the stuff.
first pic is one of the heater tubes media blasted
second pic is tube final product.
entire exhaust system will be done the same.
Pic of one of the Rivs I did a quick polish with power ball and aluminum polish..
black paint on the Rivs is perfect, just needs to be cleaned and waxed.

here are a couple of pics of stuff that will be media blasted by myself tomorrow and then painted by me smile.gif

The point of this car is to build a daily driver that looks period correct, and to be a PAX weapon in the GGR AX series. Even with a very moderate suspension package I will be in AX 16 which will give me a very nice multiplication factor for TTOD. smile.gif

I have a period correct 8-track for you...

Posted by: DanT Mar 14 2010, 11:11 PM

Funny you should mention that Rob....I have one in the garage in like new condition with a bunch of 8 track tapes biggrin.gif

I have been thinking about mounting it under the dash after I have the car basically done. idea.gif

Posted by: RobW Mar 15 2010, 08:19 AM

Under the dash? What does your inner Leif Garrett say?

[A: I was made for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ !] shades.gif

Posted by: kwales Mar 15 2010, 10:21 AM

If you are lucky, you will get one run on that 8 track tape.

The glue adhearing the iron oxide to the mylar tape breaks down, and rubbing the tape across the head wipes off the oxide and the recording.

Did work for NASA on that problem with their miles of tape of recorded satellite data.

Posted by: ConeDodger Mar 15 2010, 10:45 AM

The Doctor will see you now... You go into the room and sit in the dentist chair, the hygenist works you over and then... Dum Dum Dum!!! In walks Dr. Dan with a mullet! lol-2.gif

Nice car. I have an in-dash 8 track sitting in the garage. No tapes though...

some pics from todays adventures

car was rolled out so it could be moved to the rack to make sure all the body panels are aligned correctly and all else is straight before the real body work begins... piratenanner.gif

here are some shots of the exhaust parts I media blasted and then painted...came out pretty good..

Hey Dan - nice L80E! smile.gif

BTW - those Rivs are the re-pops, the originals on mine have a different rim without the lip & Riv logo center caps - they are brushed aluminum finish, not the polished like yours:

Attached Image

Hey - you other guys mentioning the 8-tracks (Rob Sime, RobW, etc.) - Plz post pix of them in the O&H one for original/period radios, as Jeff Bowlsby uses those in his 914 site for reference. type.gif

This is the VW4412 that was in mine when I got it used 3 yrs. back in Dec 75 (Motorola made for VW of America's accessories VOA division) - the AM/FM dial hinges back to insert the 8-track, with original dash filler plate that came with it:

Attached Image

I still have the 8-track collection too, but have worried about what Ken Wales was saying about the oxide delam problem. sad.gif

Hey Brent - I had the CB in mine too, but transferred it to our 88 Westy when we got that in 4/88 - still in there too - just in case! Saved our butts more than once with car problems on XC road trips before I had a cell!

The Rivs that are currently on the car will be coming off and switched for the Repos I have. I like the polished look better and the black is shiney instead of being textured.
The current front ones are the newer version the rears are exactly like the one in your pic.

All of that old exhaust stuff had no rust holes in it. Nothing on the heat exchangers or the muffler...it was all just surface rust that came right off with the media blast. smile.gif

My Rivs will be coming off too Dan, when resto/repair is done - for a set of 5 OEM Fuchs 2L that I'll have Al Reid restore to OE finish & mount period correct 165(/80)HR15 or 185/70VR15 tires. I'm debating whether to keep these for bigger "modern" 195/65HR15's for semi-DD use. The Rivs have never been restored, so that's original black paint that I'd refinish, after sitting since May 85 on blocks in my garage, & on the car as a DD from at least 1975 or earlier. Mine is OE an early 73 914S/914-2.0 in L80E with #31 Beige interior - so I'm going back to the Light Ivory.

BTW - the brushed finish is much harder to keep up than polished due to crud into the micro-grooves! dry.gif

I am looking for another set of wheels.
4 Bolt Fuchs, Mahles or Pedrinis....don't really care which, just as long as they are nice a straight and can be cleaned and polished...

Dan - there's a nice set of 4 Mahle Baby-gas burners (4 lugs) on TheSamba or evil-bay right now for $100 ea. (down in TX IIRC); & may also be more here, 914club, Pelican & TheSamba (under wheels &/or Porsche parts sections), classifieds, etc.

You want to make sure any of them have a part no. on the back ending in -01 to fit your self-centering (Hub-centric) front hubs with the lips around the hole for the axle dust cover (same for Rivs) - otherwise they can't seat properly & could both chew up the back face of the wheels & come loose on hard cornering. The ones with p/n ending in -00 are made for the 70-72 914s without hub-centric front hubs.

FYI - more info on this under the O&H wheels & tires nailed topics, where I'd posted a pic of the back of my Fuchs 2L with the machined inset for the lip & ....-01 p/n.

Also, Al Reid down here in Anaheim does an excellent job of refinishing wheels - both to OE spec for CW & per customer request. IIRC - that link above also has a list of other wheel refinishers on it, but don't recall if any are near you. If you do them with Al by late next month, then I can bring them up with me & drop them when I come up to SFO for biz meetings around 4/26-28 time frame. Just PM or email me if you want that drop-off service.

Dan - I just did my semi-regular evil-bay 914 search for my 73 2L resto, & saved you out the Mahle & Fuchs 2L wheels listed below (no affiliation to any) -

cool! Can't wait to see it in paint. Nice work on the exaust.

Posted by: DanT Mar 17 2010, 10:40 PM

thanks, I would like to see it in paint too biggrin.gif

car was originally L80E (Ivory White) has been repainted at least once or twice in the past in white...

plan on painting the car in Grand Prix White (L908) quite a bit brighter than original.

should look pretty good with the black bumpers, valences, and negative Porsche stripe.

Car is to be a Daily Driver and AX car, so complete originality is not my goal. Just another nice looking car that does the job.
Similar to my last build with more of an emphasis on the street instead of track... smile.gif
Body and paint is being done by the same shop that did the orange car!

Very cool. Are you going to shoot the roof again? or keep it stock?

Posted by: DanT Mar 18 2010, 08:01 AM

Rob, I plan on keeping the basic look of the car stock.
Black textured top, black (factory texture) sail panels.
Black valences and rocker panels
Black negative Porsche side stripes
L908 (GP White) body

Dan - sounds good - but IMHO I'd stick with the L80E, cuz the 914 white (Light Ivory) is actually a brighter white than the 911/912 Light Ivory of the period (more warm & off-white on 911's for some reason) - then it would put your 914 back to original color, which I've been told gets & holds a better value. I think the brightness factor would be indistinguishable unless side-by-side.

I have a similar dilemma in that I'd far prefer the 73 MY's Marathon or Alaska Blue Metallic on mine in the resto, but was advised by George H & many others to go back to the original L80E on my 73 2L, as well as myself then researching prices on many original vs. color changed 914's & the prices sold were 40-50% or more higher on original color 914s pretty consistently (after adjusted for condition - some as much as double!). So I'll be doing L80E. dry.gif

FYI - recently I did an L80E colors post on O&H asking for the color paint mix, which has examples/pix/linx of both the 911 & 914 versions, as well as different lighting on the 914 ones, etc.

went to body shop today to check progress.
Car has completed all the pulls on the rack....everything is aligned correctly now, and the body work is going to begin...the doors and front a rear hoods are ready for their last block sanding and awaiting paint with the chassis.
I wish there was a way to entice my body guy to speed up the process a bit, but he is doing this as a side job for me...so I guess I can't complain too loudly smile.gif

Dan - those look sooooo nice! - now don't ruin those Fuchs 2L's by polishing them up all over or otherwise sheeplove.gif the OE finish on them!!! dry.gif

Be careful not to take off that excellent lower sheen background & the anodizing all over on those. I wouldn't use the sand paper - just polish, since they appear to still retain their OE finish - which remember is more of a semi-polished finish due to the anodizing.

See the pix of original wheels on Steve G's Sahara Beige 73 2L at the O&H "The few, the rare..." nailed thread for the OE finish in all its glory! drooley.gif

If you really want to fully sand & polish up a set of Fuchs 2L wheels, I'll trade you a set I have for those to have your fun with - & I'll keep those as they are in OE finish! Heck, I'll be coming thru your way the week of 4/26 for a conference in SF & will drive them up for the swap buddy!!!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: DanT Apr 9 2010, 12:26 PM

slight bit of progress today.
front hood is on for checking of gaps and to make sure everything is aligned properly. Gaps look good (better than the pic shows)
Front hood is good for paint. Rear hood is a bit molested in a couple of areas, so I sourced a better one to take it's place.

Your build is coming along fantastic, I'm a bit jealous.

But seriously... good job ditching the Rivs. I got a set for free from MattR and still felt like I got the bad end of the deal (inside joke).

So, are you going with velour interior? lol2.gif

Posted by: DanT Apr 9 2010, 04:22 PM

No velour interior for me biggrin.gif
Car will be slightly less retro without the Rivs, but that is OK...car will look a bit more "correct" with the Fuchs...
I may still use the Rivs for some skinny tires, if I really want the retro look.
get some 185 or 195s on them and they would work OK. But with my finding the Fuchs, I will probably mount a nice set of 205 Dunny Direzza Star Specs and be done with it.
Got the Rivs for free from a good buddy anyway, so not out any money on them...

just wish the body shop would get a bur under their saddle dead horse.gif

Yes Rob....but then again maybe not lol-2.gif
Derrick does very nice work, so I don't wan to push too hard. He is doing a few special things for me, so I shouldn't complain....
I would just like to have a freshly painted white car to work on in the garage. I have a pile of stuff to go on the car once it is home....
I will put all the exhaust on the car at SPORTECH up on the rack, makes it much easier than crawling around on the garage floor at my house.
Physically the car will be pretty much done once it comes home, other than a few trim items.
Most of the rubber seals will be new from Mikey914 biggrin.gif
new carpet set from Morph...I still have to order that smile.gif
then it will be just a bunch of little detail items I will be doing myself, to make it a little more of "my" car.

got the fog lights taken apart, cleaned. Sanded and painted the housings, cleaned the chrome retaining ring...reassembled...

some slow progress on the '75.
left side is pretty well stripped down and also the right front fender...just the right rear to be stripped and then we are ready for body work biggrin.gif

also picked up a better rear deck lid from Koozy (Mike K) thanks Mike.

On Friday we were going up to Auburn to visit our daughter and I had found a set of Factory Fuchs that just happen to have a nice set of older Hoosiers...I plan on seeing how much grip they still have before dismounting the Hoosiers and polishing up the wheels.
Anyway I went to Rancho Cordova, and picked up the wheels, thanks Chilli (MikeW), and we then continued up to Auburn...had a great weekend there.
So now the garage is getting pretty full of parts. Heat exchangers, exhaust, 4 Rivs, 4 Fuchs, Koni adjustable front shocks, and lots of little bits and pieces, along with a bag full of stuff from Mikey914.....

today pulled the car out of the body shop and put it up on a lift and installed the complete 73-74 2.0L heat exchangers and the Monza muffler.
This sounded much better than the '75 heat exchanger/muffler combination.
Later I will find a decent 2.0L stock muffler for modification...
The Monza will do for now.

the car is very clean underneath. When the motor and tranny were out for rebuild the bottom of the trunk and heat shield were painted. The car has newly rebuilt axles/CVs, newer heater flappers, repainted engine tin, engine bar.
Only clean up still needed is to spiff up the trailing arms and the brake shields...
The paint on them looks pretty good, just needs a good cleaning.
Things are coming along............all be it very slowly. dry.gif

Well.......Dan........ biggrin.gif

Running what seems to be 80's VW Riv's. Most don't like them, but I do. I like the deeper dish on the lip. I painted the spokes black to kinda get that "911SC" look if that makes sense?

Leeving my bumpers alone, trying to make it look like something Porsche might have done if the 914 stayed around for another couple of years. So pretty much leaving 95% stock, just trying a couple of late 70's, early 80's updates to it.

I have a set of Rivs for my car also...trying to decide what I am going to do with the tires...
streets on the Rivs or the Fuchs and then AX tires on the other set idea.gif

My car is also going to stay with the big bumpers. This is my 5th 914 and all the others had earlier bumpers...so this is a bit different. In some ways I like the big bumpers because so many others seem not to like them...I tend to be a bit of a contrarian. biggrin.gif
My car is a Appearance group car, so I have vinyl sail panels (with new factory material) and fog lights, console etc.
Have you gotten all the A/C stuff off your car now?

Posted by: Root_Werks May 14 2010, 08:57 AM

Yup! AC stuff is about 90% gone and repaired. The engine bay is all stock again and just last night I was doing my initial fitting for a new front trunk floor (Thank you GPR!) I plan on finishing that up this weekend. I'm also going to install an LE spoiler.

Here's the only picture I have with current rim/tire set-up. This was just a few weeks back with other local teeners, my wife Michelle with Coffee in hand. I have the little black center caps and lug caps on it now, looks good I think. Once the front trunk is done, I'm pretty much done. Time to just drive the thing.

The engine bay shelf was a real PITA to fix. I had to source a weather strip channel and fab up a piece to graft into the shelf. The arrow points at the piece the dealer litterally tin snipped out of the 914. headbang.gif

This was after I repaired the damage and painted this side. The rest of everything was really solid, thank God!

The tin on the engine was no different. I pretty much had to simply replace the damaged pieces. It was tin-snipped along the lines. Really, really hacked up. I have yet to see an AC install on a 914 I liked. I'm sure there are good installs, I just haven't seen one.

Had some time this evening so I decided to do a bit of polishing.
I had already stripped two of the wheels with oven cleaner so decided it was time to give it a whirl...
a bit of 1000 and 1500 grit, a little aluminum wheel polish and a buffing wheel on my cordless drill and this is what I came up with.
I left the recessed areas in a brushed finish and only polished the raised petals and the rim....
Came out pretty nice for about an hour and a half of time...
better than what they started looking.

Posted by: DanT May 14 2010, 10:20 PM

I will put on a nice coat of wax and after I get the tires mounted I will wax again....
I did this with my last 914 four lug Fuchs and it worked very well...
Once mounted they should look a lot like this except on a white '75 biggrin.gif

Nice job, would make Al Reed & Weideman Brothers jealous!

That satin background it the OE finish, & helps make the windmill or 4 petals & rim which is polished stand out nicely!

So the oven cleaner was only to remove the anodizing? confused24.gif

Posted by: DanT May 14 2010, 11:44 PM

yes the oven cleaner removes the anodizing...
leaves the entire surface of the wheel in a matte finish...

Posted by: koozy May 15 2010, 01:49 AM

Can't wait to see it out on the course, Dan. Looks like it's moving along quickly now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ya. Please do the same for me... ha ha ha

Posted by: DanT May 15 2010, 10:48 AM

thanks Mike, any movement on the 2.7L? confused24.gif
he must have all the heads done by now? Doesn't he? smile.gif

saving the $135 - $150/wheel for polishing will give me alittle more cash for other improvements sawzall-smiley.gif

Posted by: DanT May 15 2010, 05:21 PM

drat......two of the wheels will not strip completely...
I have used 4 cans of HD oven cleaner, brillo pads and scuff pads and can not get all the anodizing off of the last two wheels.
I may take one over to Sportech on Monday PM and see about a little media blast...
if that works then I will finish them all the same with the media blast recessed areas and polished rims and raised spokes...if not then I guess it is off to the wheel polisher after all dry.gif
bummed, since the first two turned out so nicely and stripped easily.... confused24.gif

Posted by: DanT May 18 2010, 10:16 AM

Wheeels went to polisher yesterday afternoon... sad.gif
didn't want to do it, but had no alternative.
They will look all shiny and new in a week. smile.gif
Now to get my 205x50x15 Dunny Direzza star specs ordered. biggrin.gif

Those are going to look great on your 914!

Posted by: DanT May 27 2010, 07:31 PM

tires have arrived and a muffler that I have been wanting has become available so I will only have to do some tidying up instead of hacking a virgin stock muffler biggrin.gif
I will be removing the stock exhaust pipe, since I want a true twin pipe instead of the vintage rallye 3 pipe look. There are a few holes that need to be repaired but nothing major.
Polished stainless pipes that are about 2 inches longer will be installed also.
Entire muffler will be bead blasted, repairs done and then painted to match the heat exchangers.
Hopefully will close the deal on the muffler in the next day or so....
Car is supposed to be white by tomorrow PM, we will see. fingers crossed smile.gif

then it is suspension and reassembly time....

I want to pass on a tip to Dan and all others with polished wheels or anything else in polished aluminum. There is a product called S100 corrosion protectant, that when applied will give you long term protection to the surface. When you buy it look for the spec sheet, you will be impressed. Not really a secret but we have been using it for years. I usually apply it before delivery to the customer so all that is needed is car wash soap and water to maintain that shine. Al Weidman

thanks guys

once it is all painted and the body panels are all reattached
I need to see exactly what I will need to reassemble. Rubber seals etc...
I think I am going to reposition the gauges that are in the center console into a small 3 hole panel under the edge of the dash....
remove the console and just have a lot of nice new clean carpet...
I like the look of the interior without the console.
New complete carpet kit, cap for the dash and it should be an acceptable interior for a daily driver.
Seats are pretty decent, and I can upgrade those down the line.
I bought a new CD/radio/mp3/IPod player from Circuit city last week on sale....$88 plus some nice little JBL speakers for $49 that will plug into the stock speaker grills. The CD player has a USB input for my ipod that will charge it and display the ipod information on the dash unit. It also has a built in blue tooth with an external mic. Should work nice. Just need to get down to Kragens and pick up the new chrome completely retractable antenna, sound system will be complete....I do have a small external amp that I can also use with it, if it needs a little help.

Wheels should be done by Tuesday and I will get the new tires mounted at Wheel Techniques. Just need to get the billet center caps ordered from ISP for the wheels and they will be complete.

Posted by: Root_Werks May 28 2010, 03:51 PM

L908, that looks brighter than mine which is the L80E I believe? Light Ivory.

Over the years, I've come to really like solid colors on 914's. They go good with the body lines and accenting black sections like sail vinyl, rockers etc.

Very cool thread! Can't wait to see this one come together.

Posted by: DanT May 28 2010, 04:06 PM

the car was originally L80E, and had been repainted at least 4 times, always in some shade of white....I decided I wanted it a bit brighter so went with the L908....
I think it will look very nice once the gloss black valences, rockers and engine grills are installed...
I have new targa vinyl in factory correct patten, and the top will be repainted in a matte black.
Also having the stock exhaust opening on the rear valence filled since the two exhausts I will be using exit under the valence. biggrin.gif

Now a little assembly of those parts and it can get back to me for the final assembly of all the little bits....maybe next week I will have a car pretty close to being driven. driving.gif

now to see how much it takes to keep them looking like that....
a bit of polish now and then...
nice part is they partially polished the insides as well, so they will be much easier to keep clean, since they are nice and smooth..just not the high gloss polish of the outside.

Ever had any problem fitting the ISPwest etc. aftermarket billet center caps to the Fuchs 2L's? confused24.gif

I was talking to another guy over the weekend who said that his didn't fit right off, but were the ISPwest ones for that wheel!!?? confused24.gif

Having just gone through the frigging "slightly clearancing" av-943.gif 54 mm to 56 mm ID & -1.5 mm OD - on a set of center caps supposedly specifically made to fit the OE Vanagon Alloy Wheels for my Westy! WTF.gif

I'm beginning to wonder if any of these aftermarket guys can get anything right! Maybe I'm to old school, I pay the bucks for the specific part/application - & just expect it to fit! dry.gif

The wheels look great BTW! drooley.gif

Posted by: DanT Jun 8 2010, 07:57 AM

thanks Tom.

from what I have found reading about the caps that ISPWest sells/makes, the ones that are specifically made for real factory Fuchs seem to fit well. Maybe a bit tight, but no real problems.
I have not got mine yet, but I will report how it goes when I do. smile.gif

Posted by: DanT Jun 8 2010, 07:34 PM

got the word this afternoon that the major body panels are all back in place, doors and hoods are where they belong again. Now the reassembly of all the little stuff can begin.
I can bolt on the refurbished Fuchs and the new Dunnys.
New sail/targa vinyl, new koni adjustable shocks, new 140# rear springs, some new rubber pieces from Mikeys 914 (and probably some more to be ordered), new front sway bar, complete the heater connections, etc, etc, etc.
engine grill, valences, and rockers will be done in gloss black...

I have tons of room....~1.75 inches from tires to fender lip and I want to fill it out a bit more.

That's looking really nice Dan!

The fuchs that came on my 914 when I bought it had spacers in the front with correct longer lug bolts. The spacers were even hub-centric. I let the spacers go with the tires/wheels because you pretty much need them up front seems.

Are your fuchs factory or aftermarket?

Posted by: DanT Jun 15 2010, 09:07 AM

Factory....
my spacing issue is in the rear. Inside of tire is too close to the inside of the top of the wheel well. And I have plenty of room outside...so out they go biggrin.gif

... mine looked that nice after the 83 rebuild, before driving 2 years then being put up on blocks in my garage for 25 years! Now the lightweight 5-30 "storage" oil in there has a steady drip from probably several places. dry.gif

Hey Dan, if you converted a stock Banana muffler for that twin pipe set-up on there, did you have it flow mapped first by a custom header/exhaust shop to revise the internal baffles/etc. so it flows as well or better than stock? confused24.gif

.... or did you just extend the tailpipes inside to make it direct flow capture on where the L&R exhaust tubes attach for essentially a straight pipe set-up bypassing the muffler? confused24.gif

... or can you say due to, well you know DMV/CHP/etc.!!?? happy11.gif

PS - seeing those full polish Fuchs 2L's on your white 914 is almost enough to pull me over to "the dark side" of non-OE/non-CW finish for mine! drooley.gif biggrin.gif

nothing internal done to the muffler...just cap off the stock exhuast exit, and then drill two 2" ports for the new pipes. biggrin.gif
all done intuitively, similar to a 911 sport muffler.

If you have an old junk banana, you can cut it in half longitudinally & they can map it on computer CAD then map it for flow, & identify if there are any backpressure & vortices issues in any give outlet placement - all on computer, then tell you what to modify on the internal baffles.

Works even for mapping a stock 1 L outlet, & IIRC you can gain 10-20% performance improvement with the flow enhancing tricks, since it's the same idea as getting a tuned header exhaust system for racing, but on a limited scale using stock components.

A buddy had it done back in the 90's when he wanted to add a 2nd right outlet pipe mirroring the stock left, so they mapped it & he had to reverse/adjust some internal baffles to get equal flow L&R & avoid turbulence inside. IIRC he got about 20% more hp/tq just by better breathing.

Some guys think they can pull out the baffles for the same effect, but you still get vortexes in there from the shape of the"can" that won't allow it to flow so well. That's why the old glas paks that they used to sell for 914s were so skinny - to avoid the back pressure as much as possible.

If I keep this car the next HP increase will come from a 2056 running stock injection like my orange car was...or it will be a high revving small bore 6.
the 6 would be my preference, but who knows.

I am going to start some research on that type of motor in the near future...
A good friend of mine has years of experience building just that type of motor and will be a wealth of information. biggrin.gif

this motor would have looked great in a my white car flag.gif

idea.gif ... is the 3-prong plug at the bottom of the pic for the electric motor, so you can run it as a rechargeable hybrid?? laugh.gif

I like that motor, but not crazy about the orange tins & fan shroud - as I prefer the silver & black look personally.

I agree with the 2056 & D-jet idea, & I had considered doing that with mine (may still), but would probably pick up a core 2L motor for McMark to build a Raby 2056 & swap my matching nos. 2.0 case to save it as pure stock 2L for future CW purposes. I'd still love to drive it with the 2056's extra TQ & 110hp on the D-jet set-up though, even if I decide to CW it, since that could pass as a stealth upgrade at everything but Parade (if they were to check engine nos. there??). driving.gif w00t.gif

For you & your AX use on this 75 2L - I'd think a 2nd engine by Raby 2270 - either carbed or "new EFI" with north of 165 hp & ???++ TQ would be the hot ticket - 200-300 lbs. lighter than the 6 with more TQ than the 6 at the low & mid-ranges, esp. vs. a high-revver!!?? shades.gif

Geesh - give me a break! I did state "IIRC" & at the low end 10% is only 8.6 HP on a 75-76 2.0L (net SAE) ... dry.gif

... but then you're assuming that a particular motor is actually putting out the spec HP, which is rarely the case, esp. to the rear wheels. .... & does he want to risk reducing the meager 86 hp of a GC 2.0 with a back-pressured or poorly flowing muffler (if it is - I don't know).

Check out some of the exhaust tuner ads - they typically claim 10-20% increases, but in the case of the D-jet it is also the restrictions on the other end - lack of air flow through the throttle body - so better breathing comes from both the "inhale" & "exhale" side. biggrin.gif

Dan, there is no reason why the 2.0 can't be bored & stroked to more than 2056 & still run, and Porsche engineers back in the 70's looked at it as an answer to the power loss due to the post 75 smog controls, but didn't pursue it because the 914 was getting phased out by mid-1975 (early 76 MY).

In any case, better flowing less restrictive exhaust means better performance whatever the gain might be, and an owner customized exhaust may not perform as it was originally designed. Isn't that part of why everybody wants to back date their 75-76 2.0's to the 73-74 exhaust system!!?? confused24.gif

So now, let's do the math - convert a 75 GC 2.0 to an earlier GA 2.0 exhaust system & muffler without the crap-alytic converter & go from 86 to 95 hp, well that sounds about like 9 hp or 10% to me!!!! biggrin.gif
... yeah, I know - other stuff needs to be done to get the full step up to GA standards! ..... I'm just sayin'! dry.gif

GoWesty builds some very reliable 2.3, 2.4 & 2.5L H4's - developed from our T-4's with higher output - so IMHO, more than 2056 T4's aren't a concern & we just differ!

Optimizing HP and torque over a RPM range suited for the type of driving one will be doing is not a factor of relieving back-pressure and increasing flow. (Ask me how I know) Velocity and optimization of scavenging is the key to HP and torque and where on the RPM range you will see the benefits of such mods. That would be the header first. Without knowing what to do with that, willie-nilly muffler mods will be of little effect.

With all due respect Mike/Koozy - Air & exhaust flow does indeed matter for engine performance.
Just try sticking a raw potato up the tailpipe & see what lack of flow does to it! lol-2.gif
I recently had the catalytic ceramic inside the crap-alytic converter in our 88 Westy break loose, & every time it got up against the muffler inlet, the motor power dropped off like hitting a big headwind. blink.gif

I don't know exactly what they did on the particular mods of my buddy's muffler, & it's a total package to tune an engine for sure. The tuners put my buddy's banana design on the CAD, ran their flow analysis program based on his stock 2L HEs (SSI's), & came up with the needed revisions to to make it flow L & R, which may have involved blocking the center to create essentially two shorter mufflers L&R.

Dan's taken a unit designed with internal baffles to flow R to L (looking to the front of the car) from the 2 L&R twin pipe inlets from the stock 73-74 2L HE's - sitting about 1/4 in from the L&R ends - over to the left single pipe exit - & he's changed it to exit in 2 pipes essentially about opposite the HE inlets. That may not be as bad a flow issue, as with my buddy's adding the twin pipe on the right end in a one-way flow muffler.

Dan also said he's got the air injection out - a good thing too, as it was a stupid system with little smog benefit which burned more valves than it burned the unburnt hydrocarbons!
... my first car, a 68 Opel Kadett 1100cc burned its valves due to that DA system! dry.gif

Now Dan's also got the larger & better flowing 1-1/2" +/- diam. 73-74 2L HE's - which are essentially larger piped straight headers (as compared to the stock 75-76 ones) - although not as "tuned" as the racing headers, so his GC should be close to the GA's 91/95 HP.

You can also pick up about 5-10 hp just by using the Euro pistons & cylinders with the 8.0 compression ratio & high test gas at 100 hp (over the US spec 7.6:1 & unleaded 91 RON octane) - all staying at 2.0 (1971 cc) & without going up to 2056 cc (95 hp was old SAE std. while 91 was new SAE, but not sure which the Euro 100 hp was rated at, ergo 5-10 hp range gain). So obviously compression ratio & fuel quality also affect the engine' power & performance.

For everyday & variable driving on the roads, you want the HP & TQ bands as wide as possible, & the original T-4 GA 2.0 had a better low end performance due to the earlier & flatter/wider TQ band, than did the earlier H-6 2.0 of the 914-6 that it replaced. So the 4-2.0 actually outperformed the 6-2.0 below about 4000 RPM in stock configuration for both, which is where you want the pulling power around town, on the tight twisties & I would think in AX.

There are also lots of tricks that my old school mechanic knows to tweak the Type IV's to a bit better than spec HP & TQ. However, short of building a custom motor & fuel system like FAT Performance down here in Orange, Jake Raby (or McMark on 2056) & the other engine builders around do, it's hard to get too far out of the box from what the factory spec is! It all depends upon what you want your 914 to do & look like (OE vs. custom) & how deep is your pocket!

BTW Mike/Koozy - you almost made my point about flow mapping, but flow is a function of both velocity and volume. I can have a narrow stream with very little volume move very fast, or the same volume in a larger stream move slower with less "work" to move it, but the work can speed up the velocity to move much more volume than the smaller stream could ever move without a tremendous increase in workload.

Ergo, if I put in a venturi or decrease the diameter of the inlets or outlets anywhere, the velocity at that point increases, but that won't necessarily increase the power. However, opening the pipes up will also allow for increased velocity by allowing for a better flow, ergo flow mapping an exhaust system increases performance. Just like a larger siphon tube to drain your gas tank will drain it faster than a thinner or partially blocked tube - both given the same air pressure & gravity to drive the flow, because the flow is better.

And scavenging is more a result of piston top, head & valve design coupled with cam action primarily - so now you're talking about redesigning engines & that's beyond what I was talking here, & yet another mode of improving engine performance.
As Ron at FAT Performance says, he can design just about any engine you want based on what you want to do ....... for a price of course! biggrin.gif

I don't know who JP is, but I guess now I sound like him too! confused24.gif

I suggested getting a crapola 2.0 stock banana, cut it in half long-wise (keeping the internal baffles intact & in place, but cut in half), then take it to a custom exhaust tuner shop with the appropriate flow mapping software to mock it up & essentially redesign the internals to flow better - based on how many, what & where you want to put the outlets; then take a good muffler & pull it apart to do the mods.

However, most folks just go buy an Ansa, Bursch, Manta, Monza or Sebrign, etc. "performance" muffler, & assume that their factory flow mapping & design achieves what they claim it does to increase power.

Posted by: koozy Jun 23 2010, 03:07 AM

Outside of engine component changes; dimensions of exhaust ports and piping are the varying factors of scavenging effects in the exhaust system (if we are not trying to bake potatoes. ie: block up the system with a radically restrictive muffler). I thought the discussion was about the exhaust and it's effects on "power" so I was speaking to that alone. I think you are mistakenly thinking I am discounting your assertion that mapping the exhaust is a good idea. To the contrary, I think knowing what to do with the exhaust is critical. I just happen to know that getting "more" flow isn't the answer. Having the correct "flow" is. If it were, we'd all be running 3 inch pipes.

agree.gif

... I thought you were going a different direction before. I think we're probably saying the same thing, since mapping flow accounts for non-physical impediments to flow, such as eddies & vortexes, in the "plumbing" system on either side of the "big bang". In this case it was potential back pressure created by changing the flow pattern inside the banana muffler specifically.

BTW - we "baked a potato" in another buddy's muffler/tailpipe once back in the day - just to screw with him, & watch him keep coming back to the engine compartment to check everything over, as we pulled it out & replaced it each time. lol-2.gif
Don't worry, it was payback for a series of pranks he'd pulled on the 3 of us on prior occasions, so just evening the score up a bit! biggrin.gif

I sourced a complete set of driver and passenger seat belts from a spec boxster build by a good friend.
I got the complete 2 sets for $0, that is my kind of price. Now to see if these can be made to work in my '75. Shouldn't be too hard. biggrin.gif

Dang, Tom--mine only sat for 10 years!

I agree on the parts. Back in 1997 I thought part prices were bad. . .

Brent - I'd just completed a $6500+ $20+k today's dollars) rolling resto/rusto including overhauled engine, transaxle & suspension with 4 Koni reds all around from 80-83. So when that ditz hit it in 5/85 in the UCLA parking structure while I was doing my MBA (during 1st yr. finals) & I was still running my new in 8 business & getting remarried that summer - I just couldn't do without a car pronto, & the $6500 insurance went to the BMW I still have. After that kids, business, etc. got in the way with the usual: "when I had the time, didn't have the extra cash, or had the cash but no time" story!

Now the kids are grown & I've got more time & money, but the parts aren't as available.

BTW - that 1985 $6k estimate covered all new factory parts from the F & R whack damage& I choke when I see the prices for NLA body panels, chrome bumpers, etc. today compared to then. So now I'm trying to tie up nice original parts that are still available, so I can get it all back together right.

If I'd done it back in the late 80's or early 90's, then my 914 being repaired & in regular use might have caught the rust damage sooner & lessened that festering for 25 years! But then too, more miles would've been racked up on the +/- 172k on it now. dry.gif

I'm trying to justify the costs by dividing it by 25 years of deferred maintenance, so that the number isn't as big when 1/25th! biggrin.gif

Dan - this group can restore you 914 seatbelts if the Boxster ones don't work -
http://www.peparts.com/Detail.bok?no=78

not $0 though sad.gif

Dan - very nice build, cool to see coming together.

Dan and Tom, wish I had a small portion of your experience of teeners, sure would help me out now with trying to figure how these go together with my first one.

Dan - IIRC Mikey914 also makes reasonably priced repro of those chrome/polished aluminum bits that go on top of the roll bar on the ends/edges there. The ones which always get scratched & dinged up from the top sitting on them & wiggling a bit.

That would really dress it up nicely!

The other sail bright-work also looks great!
... did you polish them up too, or get new/nos?

Posted by: DanT Jul 6 2010, 06:47 PM

no new sail trim parts as of yet...those are ones I had in my parts stash, and they are very nice (the bottom ones).
The small ones are in pretty good shape and with a little polishing will work fine.
the larger down pieces on the sail panel I have are OK but not fantastic, so I will be looking for some better ones as time goes on. Right now I just want to get things buttoned up, and drive the car. I can then make changes to trim pieces along the way.

Posted by: Tom_T Jul 6 2010, 06:55 PM

"parts stash" - when I first got on here I could not understand why everybody had some many different parts in their stash, and swore that I was just going to find one/pair/set of whatever I needed & that was that!

Needless to say I "discovered" why & have blown my pet theory to hell-n-gone since then! ... always finding something just a but better! lol-2.gif

Looks nice any-hoo!
smilie_pokal.gif
I see NOS rear sail trim come up on evil-bay, TheSamba, here, club, etc. from time to time, so you can always pop a new set on there later when they turn up!

Posted by: DanT Jul 6 2010, 08:25 PM

I have a few items here and there, but this build will just about clear out my stash...
Which is fine... biggrin.gif Less stuff to store.

Posted by: DanT Jul 9 2010, 05:14 PM

OK,,,,
progress

rockers painted(gloss black) and installed
front valence painted(gloss black) and installed
rear valence painted(gloss black)o and in process of being installed
all trim on targa bar installed
front targa top seal installed on windshield header and A pillars

a few pics

and before anyone starts, the trailing arms and associated stuff will be cleaned and painted once I get the car home.

IIRC, you can wash those whitish plastic targa clips, then soak them in a diluted Clorox & water bath & they'll go back to white. Someone told me same trick works for the windshield washer fluid reservoir/bottle btw. But try it with the MC res. cuz. you could contaminate the brake fluid supposedly.

Keep the Clorox/chlorine bleach mix dilute as you would for whites in the laundry, & it shouldn't damage the plastic.

Tearing stuff appart is one thing, cleaning, prepping, installing takes so much longer.

I'm finally going to pull the tranny to replace the main seal this week on mine. I have to admit, it's been years since I've put so many miles on a 914. If you leave them pretty much stock, they are great cars to just drive.

I plan on getting mine back on the ground asap and continuing the driving.

New fully retractable antenna installed
Full four wheel alignment completed
door panels installed
still waiting on carpet set.
Negative side stripes still to be installed so it will look like an LE in "Salt and Pepper" '75 version smile.gif

basically a trim matte or satin black with a plasticizer mixed in. Came out better than I had expected. biggrin.gif
Just enough difference in the appearance to distinguish between the bumpers and the gloss black valences and rockers.

yep, when I got all my backdate exhaust and heater parts I bead blasted them and then put a nice coat of 500* flat dark grey on it all. Should hold up nicely.

Al Weidman

PS: Your worst enemy is brake dust that sits and gets wet.

Dan - does it have the electric power antenna for the radio?
... &/or did it originally have a power one? confused24.gif

I ask because I seem to recall dr914/George posting once that they put the power antenna on the pass. fender & the manual ones on the driver fender (mine is latter).

intact front plastic targa top holders in the trunk placed along with the nice repops of the rear rubber holders by Mikey914(Mark) biggrin.gif
Rain tray cleaned and ready to install once I get the proper hardware for it and the down tube funnels.
Got a spare tire washer and hold down and now the spare is solidly in place in the front trunk. flag.gif
Rewired my foglight/headlight switch so the fogs now come on with the parking lights and the headlights, not just the headlights.
Reworked my rear deck lid latch pin so the trunk would not pop open over bumps...needed to square and redefine the little ledge on the pin.... sawzall-smiley.gif
Next up will be the carpets which should be here in the next day or two.... idea.gif
While the seats are out for the carpet install I will do a little work on some of the vinyl. It is loose in a couple of spots so a little adhesive and it should be good until I find some better seats or get these rebuilt/upholstered.

things are starting to be the way I want them overall.... biggrin.gif

It's nice getting all the little things sorted out.

My 914 is along the same path, getting very picky about little things on it which is NICE!

Been driving it with top off for weeks now back and forth to work. The new SSI's produce massive heat in the mornings, fresh air fan works for the drive home etc.

Tunes sound decent (Need better speakers).

Just nice to get it, turn the key and drive it.

Try getting a spray bottle of a product called "Folex" from a janitorial supply company called "Waxie" - they may have an office in your area, or you may have to order online. I've used it on office/commercial, home & auto carpets, but it's best to test on an area which won't be seen or an extra scrap of the same material before using it.

Me too yesterday - it's back!!!! piratenanner.gif

Well actually I got 2 bottles, since the Westy carpet will probably use one by itself, with remainders to the BMW! biggrin.gif

I'll try it on a corner of the tunnel carpet on my "Dark Tan" #503 carpet where it won't show under another carpet section/center console, then let it sit for long awhile in order to make sure it won't affect the color long term, since I cannot find an OEM driver's floor piece - let alone a full 10+/- pc. OEM replacement carpet set for that color anymore!

BTW - "ZEP" was the other brand of useless caqrpet/upholstery cleaner they tried to carry instead for awhile.
Now if they'll just get Liquid Wrench back, because I don't like PB Blaster as well.

Got my Morph carpet kit in Charcoal grey loop a few days ago.
Began the install tonight....did the passenger side long and placed the forward footwell piece....just placing everything in dry right now so it can sit in the sun/heat for awhile before I put it down with double sided carpet tape.
Also placed the piece behind the passengers seat....
Tomorrow I will complete the drivers side and remove the console so I can place that piece...
I plan on leaving it in this way for a while so everything will start to take shape..then I will stick it down more permanent except for the two main floor pieces. biggrin.gif

Going to be taking it on a long cruise to Thunderhill this weekend....leave at 0dark30 on Saturday morning and then staying until Sunday afternoon. About 190 miles each way.
Be there to perform my duties for the GGR DE/TT/CR series as "race control"
A little overnight tent camping, should be a good weekend. biggrin.gif

Carpet kit installed....interior back together.

I removed the center console but kept the panel the gauges are installed in. I then used the brackets that held the console in place to attach the center panel to.
This is temporary until I decide what I am going to do....get a new center console or just mount the gauges in a gauge pod...under the dash.
that will do it for this week, since I will be leaving for Thunderhill early in the morning. biggrin.gif

Boy does that charcoal grey loop carpet brighten up and clean up the look of the interior.

about 200 miles each way from home to ThunderHill and back...

right at 30mpg at 70-75mph all the way.
On the way home it was in the mid 90s most of the way and the car ran without getting hot and some stop and go traffic in the low 90 temps.
No pinging or knocking running on 87 Octane... smile.gif

Got lots of positive comments from many of my 911/Boxster/996/997 owner friends.

Good to hear that Dan, but IMHO all our 914s should be running at least the 91 hi test, since the 1970's factory spec'd 91 ROZ/RON octane recco was based on the old & higher rating method.

At the cost of engine work it's just not worth it to cheap out on 87 regular gas in them.

Now waiting for my Momo 6pt harness to arrive. It has clip in attachments at all mounting points, so I will be installing clip eyes on the bar, instead of the usual wrap mount. This way the harness can be easily removed between events.
I will post some pics of the install when it is done...stock seat belts will be mounted in tandem with this for street use. driving.gif

Posted by: DanT Sep 24 2010, 03:34 PM

well the harness and the bar are installed....worked out nicely.

AXed the car for the first time last weekend...
Car ran flawlessly, and turned much better than I had counted on.
First 2 runs ran with front shocks at 1/2 firm and rears at full firm...was a bit tail happy.
So I tightened up the front end to full firm...car was well balanced, no push and could still steer the rear with the throttle (which is my driving style biggrin.gif )
Finished first in class and 4th overall in PAX (performance AX index).
Not bad for it's first use in anger, and I still haven't adjusted air pressures beyond making sure all tires were at 38psi when I left for the venue.
I am running Dunny Direzza Star Specs on the stock Fuchs...205x50x15s.
I may try a lower pressure at the next event but the 38 worked well with the suspension settings and the course design for that event.

So far my build for a nice street car/daily driver and AX car have pretty much met my planned expectations.

Pretty cool to get down to dailing in all the little things compared to cutting out cancer.

I will say I've been enjoying driving mine so far this year. It's just reg maint at this point and drive!

well I have found a small leak on the motor looks like it is either a galley plug or possibly the front main seal....confused24.gif
so next week the motor will come out and I will see what it is and repair as needed. This is the only sign of a leak (about 2K miles now) and it is less than a drop a day, but I want a completely dry motor.
While the motor is out I will detail the engine and engine compartment along with detaching and re-indexing the right trunk hinge...it is too high and the trunk lid on the right sits up in the front right corner....not a big deal, but it bugs me and since the motor will be out, it will be the perfect time to do a little fiddling. biggrin.gif

NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!

It will be back on the road by the 24th of October.
Have to have it ready for its final AX shake down of the season in early November.
Then I should be ready for my assault on our overall PAX championship for next year. biggrin.gif

got the rest of the exhaust media blasted and painted...came out pretty nice for a quick job smile.gif

Hey DanT,

Great job on the muffler! I have one that looks just like your "before" shot and am now encouraged that I can make it look a lot better.

BTW: Is it a CA car? I noticed in the first pic the front was cranked up to meet the CA 24" headlight law here. Used to tick me off seeing all the 914s on the freeway looking as thought they were trying to take off! Many Thanks to the Porsche design with the easily adjustable front ride height so the nose can be dropped to the designed ride height.

the very first pic in this thread was only a sample pic of a '75 that I had found....and yes the front is very high on that car...I would never have one at that height.
yes my car is a Cali car but it sits much lower than that. biggrin.gif
Go give your muffler a good try....it is worth it...
I still have the Monza/Ansa in my garage...don't know if I will end up running it or not...
Enjoying my twin pipe right now smile.gif

no worries Andy....
car will be ready for the road on or before the 24th of October.
I really don't like long drawn out projects, so this will be done quickly.

I have never understood projects that take years and years.....just not my way of doing things...guess I need immediate gratification biggrin.gif
I read books the same way, once I start I just read until it is completed.

Posted by: DanT Oct 25 2010, 09:40 PM

my little list of items is complete....
motor removed and front crank seal replaced...
Tranny with new 2nd, 4th and 5th sliders.
truck hinges repositioned and rewelded into proper places.

car is back on the street and ready for the last AX of the season in mid November. smile.gif

Well done Dan! Keep it on the road.

I recently did a valve adjustement on mine.

Yesterday it wouldn't start, click, click and was able to use the screwdriver method at the starter to get it going. So new ignition switch is on order as of yesterday.

Started fine this morning, we'll see if I have to get on the ground after work again today though. smile.gif

But, I'm keeping mine on the road and driving it daily.

thinking of getting some tires for my set of Rivs....some good winter (decent traction in the wet stuff) tires...
any suggestions from the masses...probably will go with 205x60s or 195x65s depending on brand...

Posted by: Root_Werks Oct 29 2010, 11:58 AM

195, let alone 205mm of tire seems to me, alot for a 90hp engine to push along. I really like my 185's on the Riv's. It's plenty.

My new ign switch arrived, although I haven't installed it yet, 914 has been starting just fine.

You get your winter tires. I have a "Winter" rig to drive. biggrin.gif driving.gif

I had 195 Michelins on 8 spokers on my Orange car and they fit and looked good, so I will probably go with that size for streets, although the car had 205x60s on Rivs for rollers when it was at the body shop, so I know they will fit with no clearance issues.
The Rivs I have are like brand new and I even have a set of brand new center caps.
Since I am running wheel studs instead of bolts, changing wheels is nothing more than switching the wheels and installing with my set of acorn wheel nuts instead of the factory wheel ball seat nuts.

Dan, I really like the look of your square back....
Any pics of it after the paint job?

car is running great and doing well at AX...can't wait for an entire season next year
no more oil leak (it was very minor but bugged me anyway)

I will make a few changes during the off season...
I have sourced a very nice set of 2.0L SSIs (I actually sold these and the buyer never installed them, so I am buying them back biggrin.gif )

may try a bit more camber front and rear smile.gif

will probably either recover my seats of see if I can source some Corbeau Classics or something like that...
pics from AX 11/13/2010 not too bad of a day....finished 1st in my class by 2 seconds, over 6 other competitors and with our PAX index I finished 3rd overall out of 110 cars.

I hear ya. When I go to the shop and look at my car I see so many things I could do. But, I'm going to settle for running at this point. What class has no drivers in it? Is it 6? I may just jump in that one to hear everyones opinion on how it's not classed correctly but there will be no drivers in the class that can formally protest. That should be fun. he he he

probably $2500 for the tranny and then some big bucks for the motor confused24.gif

I am going to run in AX16 next season but will gauge myself against the cars in AX11-AX15

From the results of our last event I would have place in the top three in all of those classes smile.gif

my guess the price posted was for the tranny...and the motor if it is any good at all will be more like $7500 or more.

nope not today...I will do the insides of the wheels once the rainy season is over in the spring.
just wanted to get the calipers done and get the struts cleaned and a quick coat of rattle can on them.

next up will be some work on the interior...need to do some work on the seats and dash...have to decide on recovering seats of sourcing some Corbeau Classics, recovering or putting on a dash cap.

Oh and I will install my new US version tail light lenses when they finally get here smile.gif stuck in group buy hell right now...no fault of the person running the group buy...just needs information from some folks so he can get things off to the supplier.

may use a set of these if I can't find a decent set of Corbeaus at the right price
they have a set that has black on the edges like these and then a nice dark grey in the colored areas
Bottom seat cover is a complete separate piece, so it works just like the stock seat covers. Not one piece like some of the neoprene covers.

Based on the discussion on Jaime's "Gas?" what gas to run in his 1.7 topic, & jogging my halfzymers memory by Gint & the others posting there, I agree that 87/Regular is fine in most all cases. I'd forgotten about the changes in the octane rating system, & the difference of US being lower # than RON for the same gas.

Hey Dan - if your dash isn't cracked, then you're better off using one of those fabric or rug covers to protect it from the sun & heat cycling expansion/contraction, which causes the cracks.

It will crack eventually.because according to my departed Dad who was a petro/chemical/plastics-chemist, the foam underneath continues to slowly expand over time, while the black vinyl on top contracts & gets more brittle & heat/cold cycles with expand/contract until it cracks. Mine went into my garage perfect in 5/85 for 25+ years, but then cracked in the last 5-6! sad.gif

IMHO, you're better off buying a core or sending yours up to Craig at CAMP914 for a quality resto/recovering which will last for a number of years, as well as better matching the nice resto you've done! JUst my$0.02!!!! smile.gif

Also, I've seen somebody only line & in the Panorama, Hemmings S&E, etc. advertising the 914-6GT style repro seats, as opposed to those ones you posted or the Corbeau's (unless I'm not realizing that the latter were the former).

Posted by: DanT Dec 6 2010, 09:57 PM

the only reason I would be considering putting on a dash cap is because my current dash has several cracks in it.
This is no CW car, and is by no means a correct rebuild of a stock '75
As such I do to it as I want, as anyone should do with their car.
If I can't find seats that work with the stock back pad, I will remove it and just carpet the rear bulkhead and use whatever seats fit my mood, and my size.

This car was built for two purposes. To be my daily driver and to be a competent AX car. So far it has done well at both. Next season will be the real test...

how do you like the tires so far? i need some new shoes and have a narrow 74 with stock fuchs and want to get something that sticks really well.
also, care to share your source for those seat covers?

Posted by: DanT Dec 6 2010, 10:24 PM

tires are 205x50x15s. Dunlop Direzza Star Spec Z1 200WR but seem to be much better than that in the stick department...have read some information saying that the tread wear rating should probably be closer to 100 like some lower level DOT Rs.
I have really been impressed with the Dunnys so far...I have driven on just about every DOT R available in the last 20 years along with Goodyear slicks.
While not in the territory of tires like Kumho V710s or Hoosier A6s, these are a very good compromise tire. They have performed very well with my suspension setup at AX so far.
On my previous car I ran V710s on custom 7" wheels under stock fenders along with a set of early Hankook Z212s on Fuchs...
2 events since the car was completed, and I finished at least 2 seconds in front of my next closest class competitor. One time it was a 944 on 7&8s with Hoosier A6s and the second time was against a 74 2.0L 914 running Nitto NT01s.
Finished 4th place overall and 3rd overall with our PAX index in the two events the car has run...planning a full on attack for 1st in PAX next season....
This car was built specifically to compete in the class that gave me maximum multiplication factor in our PAX indexes.

thanks for the thread- really enjoyed it! , on the subject of seats, you could go this direction, but takes some modifications. I put in these 911 seats/996 , several other guys have too. just a thought as you are considering your options.
The back pad i ordered from morph, new fiberglass core with 1/8'' foam, new black vinyl , seats sit back in fine with no interference since the stock foam is not on there, thought about just covering the back firewall with carpet but this way looks better.(dont have a picture of that now, will post if you care...)

Phoenix Red '74 had 21 mm front torsion bars, 19mm sway bar, 180# rear springs
Front and rear custom valved Bilsteins. Car ride height set very low running about -2* camber in front and about -2.25* in rear.
Track duty on custom 7" steel rims running 205x50x15 Kumho V710s (very wide, almost a 225 in reality)
Grand Prix White '75 running stock front bar, with stock torsion bars, rear 140# springs. Adjustable Konis front and rear and sitting quite a bit higher. -1.25* camber in front and -1.50* camber in rear.

5 polished 4 bolt Fuchs showed up at my door this morning. They have been sitting bagged for several years so they all need some detailing and some polishing but not bad for the price... Good enough for street wheels.
A good friend from GGR TT/DE series converted his car to a 3.2L with GT flares and 5 bolt hubs several years ago...these have been sitting in his garage taking up space...he asked me if I wanted them....of course I said yes. These will work perfectly for street tires in the 205x60 or 195x65 size once I decide on a tire...have also thought of just going old school with a set and doing 165s for the street.
The Fuchs also came with 4 decent factory center caps....actually 3 of them are excellent...so I may do some swapping of center caps with my current 4 to get the best of the best.

Also received 2 7x16 Original Fuchs from same fellow.
These will probably be sold off to help pay for the street tires.
What is a decent pair of 7x16s worth these days?

The Rivs actually would be the thing, if you're still doing the retro idea.

Posted by: DanT Jan 16 2011, 02:24 PM

so recently I have been thinking more about the rear visibility on my car. I have already done a high mounted 3rd brake light that can be seen in this thread http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=110057&hl=3rd+brake+light
After replacing my tail light lenses with some brand new repops....I decided it was time to do a little something with the inside of the tail light housing itself....
These things were never too reflective to begin with since it was just a silver (looks like paint) coating over plastic...
So I was thinking about how to make the housing more reflective...

Aluminum Foil Tape....did a quick job and it makes quite a bit of difference.
Short of having the guts of the lights "plastic chrome plated" I thought this might help.
First pic is what it looked like before I put on the tape. From what I have gleaned in other posts on this matter, most of our old housings look like this.

No flash on the pic...the light you see is just from the running lights, no brake lights lit.

made quite a bit of difference with a little reflection going on and not just relying on the light of the bulb itself biggrin.gif

Thats impressive Dan. Way to think outside the box. Are those normal bulbs or are they LED's?

Posted by: DanT Jan 16 2011, 07:41 PM

normal bulbs, I have been considering LEDs but,....wanted to see what it would be like with a bit more reflective material first....then if it wasn't what I wanted I would pop for the LEDs.
For right now I am pretty satisfied with the amount of light.
Not bad for about 1/2 hour of cleaning and installation and about $5 for the Aluminum Foil Tape. biggrin.gif

no pics yet, but I should be getting my good top from the body shop on Friday.
The top has been completely smoothed and then painted with matte black paint...should match the overall look of the sail panels....hopefully. Anyway it is a very straight clean top and will also have new seals on the sides and rear from Mikey914.
Anxious to see how it looks.
will post pics of the top as soon as I have it. biggrin.gif

I am also going to make a guage panel from some black ABS sheeting. It will be mounted to the stock console upper bracket. The gauges will mounted horizontally under the edge of the dash instead of vertically like in the console.

Hey Dan FWIW - & I know you're not a CW nut, but for future reference - what I understand they do to get the pebble-finish of the OE tops to match the sail vinyl, is to spray Wurth underbody schutz for the texture (don't recall the gun/tip used), and then top coat with a satin black (a slight bit less flat than matte black). Same technique is used for the rockers & F&R valances, and the 73-74 textured/painted black steel bumpers IIRC.

Good Job on the lights BTW! I've also seen the rattle-can chrome paint used to "refresh" them - short of a new plasti-chrome job, but it requires removal & masking to keep overspray off the car & other light housing/parts.

Posted by: DanT Jan 20 2011, 12:30 PM

I am not going for a perfect texture match...just a general look...with the matte black finish it should be pretty close...
If it doesn't look right then I will just strip it and do it another way...
that is part of the fun of not trying to do a perfect OE restoration...
I can do what ever suits my fancy.

this is a daily driver/AX car and maybe a track day or two in the future.

Yes, I was pretty happy with the way the lights turned out and I didn't want to have to either R&R the tail light assemblies to paint or mask off the entire rear of the car to get it done either...the tape was cheap quick and easy...And I could remove it if it didn't work smile.gif

Understood on both top & lights, & about it being an AX/DD/TT/DE 914.

I suggested the Wurth method cuz it's also available in rattle can & you can do it yourself at home, if you don't like the other shop-done texture/look.

BTW - while I'm trying to resto mine to OE look - mainly cuz I never had it completely that way when I bought it 3 yrs. old in 75 & want to enjoy it as an "as if new car" biggrin.gif - I will be driving.gif it & may even try an AX for fun (never done one), but may also try a CW event too while it's still fresh & clean - before I have to re-clean stuff too much! laugh.gif

top is now smoothed and primed...underside is already painted smile.gif
will be painted by this afternoon.

Also decided to try my Vitaloni mirrors for something a bit different.
These are mounted to the factory spots using the factory captured nuts in the doors.
I cut a piece of old bike inner tube for a gasket between the mirror base and the paint on the doors, so they won't leave any marks if I decide to remove them.
If I don't like them then I will go back to the factory mirrors...

they give the car a slightly different look biggrin.gif

You know Dan...I'm liking the baby turbo mirrors. Hmm, wonder if I could pick some up for my 914? idea.gif

Posted by: DanT Jan 21 2011, 06:36 PM

I have had those around for years....took them off of one of my first 914s and replaced them with something else...
Anyway I decided to give them a try....they look pretty good and go with the top and the bumpers...
If I get tired of them I will just go back to the factory mirrors...
Just like to change things up once in a while biggrin.gif
I might mount up my Monza 4 tip exhaust this weekend for a little more retro feel... happy11.gif

Dan, if you get a pair make sure to mount them to the stock holes...just need some longer bolts and a couple of washers to make them work with the factory captured nuts. Easy on and easy off.
I had to modify the base of each mirror a bit so the mirror head would sit level....I have seen a bunch of these over the years with the mirror head sticking up at the end because the base was not modified... dry.gif

Posted by: Krieger Jan 21 2011, 11:29 PM

Looks good! I modified the base on my baby turbo to fit the curve of the door. My mirror is not in the stock location, but a couple inches down. I taped some sandpaper to my door with the gritty side up and slid the mirror back and forth on the paper till it had the correct curve.

Posted by: DanT Jan 22 2011, 12:00 AM

Well, got bored again and decided to put the Monza 4 tip exhaust on.
Definitely sounds different than the stock muffler twin piped...not better or worse, just different biggrin.gif

Next I will be mounting up a Bursch that will have the exhaust pipe modified to clear the valence with no stock opening...
Once I decide which one I want to keep long term I will modify/repair the valence to match. smile.gif

Top is still not ready to install, waiting on new seals from Mikey914. smile.gif

got the good top back from being smoothed and painted.
finish is black with a matte clear coat....
came out just about the way I had envisioned as far as finish color.
I am quite pleased. Now just awaiting my new rear and side targa top seals to finish it off. biggrin.gif

one thing that I did notice, the new top is noticeably lighter in weight than the old top....I guess that pebble finish had some weight to it smile.gif

I haven't ever sanded a top smooth before, but had a 914 that someone sanded smooth and painted. I noticed the same thing, it was lighter.

Posted by: DanT Jan 28 2011, 10:45 AM

Thanks Dan....I am very pleased with the way the roof turned out...and it is much easier to wipe over to keep clean without the rough surface of the original finish. smile.gif

Got a wider angle shot? I'm liking the matte top, but I'd like to get a real overall impression.

WOW! - that really looks nice & you really can't tell it's not pebbled from that 6-10' distance! drooley.gif

... and you know that for my personal tastes on my car, I'm an OE-kinda-guy! biggrin.gif

That almost could've been an alternative considered by the factory back in the day for lighter weight, less work/process steps in mfgr., etc. - but still goes well with the rollbar vinyl. .... maybe it was considered back in the day - who knows!? confused24.gif

I know that often aircraft are left unpainted aluminum to save weight, because it adds several 100s to 1000s of lbs., depending on the size of the aircraft. So the lighter weight without the pebble finish layer(s) makes sense.

Posted by: DanT Jan 28 2011, 01:25 PM

Here are some shots of the new top and also you can see the baby turbo Vitalonis as well. smile.gif
Car is coming together as I had originally envisioned for the most part.

As a side note. I coated the inside of the front turn signal buckets with the aluminum foil tape just as I did with the tail lights. Definite improvement in light emitted. biggrin.gif

Also noticing how nice & straight & even & flush all of your body seams are at the doors, F&R deck lids & even headlights/brows - which all too often end up a bit wanky. IIRC you stripped it almost to shell to paint, but even if not - great job on the panels! beerchug.gif

Posted by: Root_Werks Jan 28 2011, 02:30 PM

The finish and color match to the side vinyl really nice.

Dan, what mirrors are you using? I like those.

Posted by: DanT Jan 28 2011, 03:57 PM

Dan, thanks for the positive comments, the mirrors are some old baby turbo Vitalonis I have had laying around for like 15 years or more. I took them off of the delphi Green '73 2.0L I had back in the mid 90s. I decided they looked pretty good with the top the way I was planning on doing it and the big bumpers....
Just gives the car a slightly different look. I can always go back to the stockers whenever I want.
The Vitalonis mount to the stock mirror locations with slightly longer bolts and a bit of modification to the base where the arm articulates. In stock form the mirror will not lay parallel with the ground, so a bit if judicious filing allows the head of the mirror to be parallel. Just have to take it apart and it is pretty obvious how to make it work and look correct.
I didn't take any pics when I was modding the base since I wasn't sure I would want to use them anyway. biggrin.gif

Posted by: DanT Jan 30 2011, 04:29 PM

that is one thing about living in California most of the time.
Last week I was able to repaint my twin pipe muffler since we had a week of 70*+ weather.
Also reglued the head liner in my newly repainted top a couple of days ago and the 3M cement set up in a matter of minutes smile.gif
It would kill me to have to wait to do certain things because of the ambient temps and humidity in the air for weeks at a time sad.gif

Posted by: DanT Feb 4 2011, 02:39 PM

been thinking of possibly doing a red PORSCHE side stripe, so I decided to try a little pin striping just to see if the color would go with the rest of the car....
It helps to tie in the red on the calipers. biggrin.gif
Anyway, it is just tape and I can always remove it.
Something else I did a few weeks back was to dig out and modify some old splash guards I had from my Boxster. Cut them down and modified them so the fit the contours of the car. Since I AX the car all the time and the venue we use tends to have lots of sand and fine gravel, I decided to try and protect the rocker panel and rear valence paint just a bit. You can see them in these pics. Fairly unobtrusive and should help the paint chips considerably. smile.gif

I also installed the top of the glass to targa top and the rear targa top seals I got from Mikey914 yesterday. They fit great, although those top to side glass are a bear to get in the track. Again, more great products from 914Rubber.com.
My targa top refurbishment is over for now. Later I may put a 1/4" of foam padding and then some nice black vinyl in the head liner instead of the felt...but that will be much later when I redo my door panels in RS style like I did on my last car with real RS America door pulls. Rennshifter is in transit...should be here by Monday. biggrin.gif
After I get that installed I am going to start searching for a decent (cheap) SC/Carrera center console. I will be modifying it to replace the stock 914 console I removed. With the large hole in the SC console it should fit perfectly with the Rennshifter and an SC shifter boot. Then I will fab up a panel to fit in the storage bin area of the console for my Temp, Voltmeter, and clock.

OK, Rennshifter received this afternoon around 5pm....
Already installed adjusted and working fine. May need to make some fine adjustments, but able to get all gears upshifting and downshifting, reverse locked out automatically. Adjustment was a bit of an exercise in geometry and physics...but all good. smile.gif
Pics tomorrow...
Now need to find the 911 console and 915 shifter boot. biggrin.gif
I will give my assessment in a few days..

Posted by: DanT Feb 22 2011, 10:23 PM

some slight adjustments to the shifter today....needed to reposition the shifter on the shift rod...needed a bit more engagement for 3rd and 5th. Then reset the shift stops...
much better now.
Now I just need to get used to the fact that the gear is really there biggrin.gif

Is there a noticeable improvement over the stock shifter? As I recall you occasionally had problems engaging first ..... did the Rennshifter help with that?

Posted by: DanT Feb 23 2011, 07:46 PM

yes, so far it seems to have helped the engagement of first gear...I think the stock shifter just needed to be slightly adjusted on the shift rod and it would have been better.
From what I could see, the stock shifter had never been off the car before and I think with normal wear, it just would have needed a bit of adjustment to help the first gear issue. All the shifter linkage bushings had been replaced, so this was the only adjustment left to be attended to.
Now first goes in easily, and for second you just basically push the shifter straight up and it goes right into second without nicking reverse... smile.gif
I have driven several 914s with Rennshifters and Welt short shifters (including my 914-6), so I knew basically what to expect....
takes a bit of getting used to but overall it is definitely an improvement. biggrin.gif

How so ... the reverse lockout? Does the shifting feel more precise or at least tighter all around? I have quite a bit of slop in mine, to the point where the only way to know that I'm in 2nd and not neutral is by the position of the gear shifter .... by that I mean if I wiggle the shifter side-to-side it feels the same in 2nd (or 3rd) gear as it does in neutral. It would be really nice if the Rennshifter helped to improve that (though I'm not sure it would).

Hey Dave, I think that you should be able to get a full set of the new shifter bushings, install them & adjust the shifter linkages - then all of that slop should go away, since it's usually due to worn bushings & adjustment issues.

The 73-76 side-shifters were always fairly tight & positive shifting - comparable to 911/912/930s of the day - although not as direct as the front engine/trans with shift on top of trans/tunnel are - but 914s take corners better than most of those! biggrin.gif

No need to go to the Rennshifter or other short-shift kits on yours, unless that's what you want. IIRC yours is a really original 73 914-2L that was essentially a 1-owner, in one family before you (father-son), so save the old parts to convert back later if you decide to try the Renn/etc., given that 914's originality.

Cheers! beerchug.gif

How much was the boot if I may ask?

Posted by: DanT Feb 26 2011, 11:39 PM

good friend of mine who owns a Porsche shop ordered it for me....got it the same afternoon with his usual parts shipment.

$17 smile.gif

also decided I didn't care for the big billet knob, so I went ahead and installed my repop shift knob...looks much better IMHO smile.gif

Instructing tomorrow at an AX school in the Infineon Paddock.
About 40-50 students I believe.
Instructors will get a chance to drive as well, so I can shake off some cobwebs and make sure the car is all ready for the season...
Our AX season begins on March 19. I have designed the AX course for our first event.
Should be a good course for midengined cars.
Time for me to begin my assault on PAX for the season biggrin.gif

Great school yesterday.
We had an eclectic collection of cars...
from front wheel drive toyotas, Mazdas, Acuras to
MGs with 215 Buick V8 conversions.
We also had the Battleship. THis car started life as a short wheelbase 912. It now had huge Carbon fiber fender flares running 315 rear V710s and 275s up front. CF roof, CF doors, CF front and rear deck lids...around 2100# with fuel.
G50 6speed tranny, and here is the biggy.................................
GT3 Cup motor biggrin.gif Over 450HP on tap,instantly. happy11.gif happy11.gif and yes, water cooled
Rode in it a few times and then got to drive it.
On/off racing clutch and a hair trigger for a throttle (about one inch of travel blink.gif )
What an adrenalin rush. first.gif

Oh yea, and my car ran flawlessly....~100 mile drive each way without a stumble. And ran the course without issue. Ready for the upcoming season smile.gif

Alrighty....
"School" is over and it is time to get out there and kill some cones. biggrin.gif
Saturday is our first AX of the 2011 season.
Weather forecast is for rain off and on all day...so street tires may do pretty well overall.
Still going for PAX and so far it appears that two major competitors from last season are out...at least for now...one guy sold his very trick BoxsterS (having hip surgery I believe) and the other hasn't signed up for the event. dry.gif

And the best part is that I designed the course....lots of high speed transitions...you know, the ones that 911 drivers hate happy11.gif happy11.gif
If it is wet out, the 911s are going to have a tough time of it...
here is the quick sketch....
start and then thru the small loop....then a series of offset gates, one chicane, more off set gates, big high speed decreasing radius loop at the far end, and then a looooong slalom with increasing spacing and then decreasing spacing.... smile.gif
~4,000' in length.

well, I guess the car is running pretty well.
Saturday's AX was in the wet and rain all day. Our run group got the early wet surface, it started to dry out for the second group, and then just before our second runs it started pouring....standing water everywhere... biggrin.gif
A well set up stock 914 does pretty well in the rain...
I finished in the top 1/3 overall and won my class and then won PAX overall. first.gif
PAX=performance AX index. it is a way to compare cars/drivers from different classes.

Pretty evident that the rain was an equalizer...but I will bask in my results until our next event.
Fastest time by a GT3 running Hoosier Rains was a 55 and change. The GT3 is professionally set up for SCCA National competition with two very good drivers. My best time in the pouring rain, with standing water in several places was a 60.6 on Full tread Dunny Dirreza Star Specs...

Way to go Dan ..... awesome result. smilie_pokal.gif

I've been meaning to ask: now that you have had some wheel time with the Rennshifter, what do you think of it?

Posted by: DanT Mar 23 2011, 11:13 AM

Thanks Dave.
for my main reason of getting it, which was to ensure a good solid 2-3 upshift downshift in the heat of battle it works very well.
I am getting used to it and the more I use it the more I like it.
It is a totally different feel from a stock shifter or even a stock shifter with a short shift conversion.
it flows into 2nd from first very nicely and you have to physically push it over to go into 4th....that is part of the design...
For what it is and compared to a stock shifter it is nice. I am glad I was able to find it for a slightly lower price. smile.gif

Update on the Rennshifter:

The more I use it the more I like it. As it breaks in and I become more accustomed to it, it becomes more intuitive. biggrin.gif
I really like the 1-2 shift.

Next AX is 4/23. Car and driver are ready to go....hopefully in the dry this time driving.gif

I know these are kinda spendy, but after driving a direct shift (my squareback) around for a few months, then hoping into my 914.....

sad.gif

My 914 shifts like poo!

After the Dr. Evil Tranny clinic next month, I'll start saving my pennies for one of these maybe?

idea.gif

Posted by: DanT Apr 5 2011, 04:03 PM

I had no other excuses about the shifting. The tranny was rebuilt in 2010 and all new bushings for shifter mechanism, front to rear!
So this was the last piece of the puzzle.
Only thing I may do is to install some 911 sport mounts for the tranny, then call it done. biggrin.gif

Very interesting. Do you think it's getting better because you are more used to the different feel, or is it due to the mechanical break in period? How about getting into first after a long stoplight? Getting into first gear after a long stop is getting crankier for me, but blipping the throttle seems to help.

I'd like to check out your Rennshift one day ...... maybe next time you're at Ken's Sportech?

Posted by: DanT Apr 12 2011, 07:54 AM

Mostly mechanical break in, but I am sure some getting used to it is helping biggrin.gif

I build them drive them for awhile, and then move on to another project. May be moving to a 2003 or 2004 BoxsterS and slowly install full Spec Boxster suspension....
I have helped build several Spec Boxes over the last few years and have wanted to take the suspension and put it in a car with more HP.
I have done many laps in Spec Boxsters, doing suspension development testing. So I have a few ideas I would like to try. smile.gif

Casper the white '75 is sold and going to central California! smile.gif

Posted by: KELTY360 Jul 2 2011, 03:42 PM

Wow! Somebody got a great car. What's next on the menu?

Posted by: DanT Jul 2 2011, 03:45 PM

Still pondering.
If I wanted to Go back to the track big time, I would be looking at Elliott's car...
But more likely a BoxsterS or an early 996, then the mods will begin biggrin.gif

Posted by: Michael N Jul 2 2011, 04:21 PM

I bet the new owner will be very happy.

How about building a Boxster S with the Cayman top. Lighter than the Cayman R for 1/3rd of the price? White of course.

I bet that would be a fun track car.
