So my latest build is a '75 Appearance Group car.
Car is currently in the body shop being stripped to bare metal.
Motor and tranny were just rebuilt...
going for a retro look.
Rivs, Porsche negative side stripe, Monza exhaust, Vittaloni mirrors and a few interior items to keep it '70s
got a load of stuff from MikeK (914magazine) today.
4 very nice Rivs
2.0L heat exchangers with associated heater stuff
Monza exhaust
2.0L muffler hanger
Koni front struts
spare trigger points
Custom pedal board
original grain vinyl for the sail panels and targa bar
here are some pics of the stuff.
first pic is one of the heater tubes media blasted
second pic is tube final product.
entire exhaust system will be done the same.
Pic of one of the Rivs I did a quick polish with power ball and aluminum polish..
black paint on the Rivs is perfect, just needs to be cleaned and waxed.
here are a couple of pics of stuff that will be media blasted by myself tomorrow and then painted by me
The point of this car is to build a daily driver that looks period correct, and to be a PAX weapon in the GGR AX series. Even with a very moderate suspension package I will be in AX 16 which will give me a very nice multiplication factor for TTOD.

I have a period correct 8-track for you...
Funny you should mention that Rob....I have one in the garage in like new condition with a bunch of 8 track tapes
I have been thinking about mounting it under the dash after I have the car basically done.
Under the dash? What does your inner Leif Garrett say?
[A: I was made for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ !]
If you are lucky, you will get one run on that 8 track tape.
The glue adhearing the iron oxide to the mylar tape breaks down, and rubbing the tape across the head wipes off the oxide and the recording.
Did work for NASA on that problem with their miles of tape of recorded satellite data.
The Doctor will see you now... You go into the room and sit in the dentist chair, the hygenist works you over and then... Dum Dum Dum!!! In walks Dr. Dan with a mullet!
Nice car. I have an in-dash 8 track sitting in the garage. No tapes though...
some pics from todays adventures
car was rolled out so it could be moved to the rack to make sure all the body panels are aligned correctly and all else is straight before the real body work begins...
here are some shots of the exhaust parts I media blasted and then painted...came out pretty good..

Hey Dan - nice L80E!
BTW - those Rivs are the re-pops, the originals on mine have a different rim without the lip & Riv logo center caps - they are brushed aluminum finish, not the polished like yours:
Hey - you other guys mentioning the 8-tracks (Rob Sime, RobW, etc.) - Plz post pix of them in the O&H one for original/period radios, as Jeff Bowlsby uses those in his 914 site for reference.
This is the VW4412 that was in mine when I got it used 3 yrs. back in Dec 75 (Motorola made for VW of America's accessories VOA division) - the AM/FM dial hinges back to insert the 8-track, with original dash filler plate that came with it:
I still have the 8-track collection too, but have worried about what Ken Wales was saying about the oxide delam problem.
Hey Brent - I had the CB in mine too, but transferred it to our 88 Westy when we got that in 4/88 - still in there too - just in case! Saved our butts more than once with car problems on XC road trips before I had a cell!
The Rivs that are currently on the car will be coming off and switched for the Repos I have. I like the polished look better and the black is shiney instead of being textured.
The current front ones are the newer version the rears are exactly like the one in your pic.
All of that old exhaust stuff had no rust holes in it. Nothing on the heat exchangers or the muffler...it was all just surface rust that came right off with the media blast.
I am looking for another set of wheels.
4 Bolt Fuchs, Mahles or Pedrinis....don't really care which, just as long as they are nice a straight and can be cleaned and polished...
Dan - I just did my semi-regular evil-bay 914 search for my 73 2L resto, & saved you out the Mahle & Fuchs 2L wheels listed below (no affiliation to any) -

Hope this helps, but also check on TheSamba under wheels & Porsche parts, as they have good stuff & good sellers too, but without the auction mentality at the evil-one!
Ok made some progress yesterday.
got the rest of the exhaust media blasted and painted...came out pretty nice for a quick job
also shot a few pics of the car being rolled out of the shop going onto the rack to pull a couple of corners to get all the panels to line up...then body work
muffler before and after
heat exchangers before and after
pics of car

cool! Can't wait to see it in paint. Nice work on the exaust.
thanks, I would like to see it in paint too
car was originally L80E (Ivory White) has been repainted at least once or twice in the past in white...
plan on painting the car in Grand Prix White (L908) quite a bit brighter than original.
should look pretty good with the black bumpers, valences, and negative Porsche stripe.
Car is to be a Daily Driver and AX car, so complete originality is not my goal. Just another nice looking car that does the job.
Similar to my last build with more of an emphasis on the street instead of track...
Body and paint is being done by the same shop that did the orange car!
Attached image(s)
Rob, I plan on keeping the basic look of the car stock.
Black textured top, black (factory texture) sail panels.
Black valences and rocker panels
Black negative Porsche side stripes
L908 (GP White) body
went to body shop today to check progress.
Car has completed all the pulls on the rack....everything is aligned correctly now, and the body work is going to begin...the doors and front a rear hoods are ready for their last block sanding and awaiting paint with the chassis.
I wish there was a way to entice my body guy to speed up the process a bit, but he is doing this as a side job for me...so I guess I can't complain too loudly
only minimal progress....
removed the door strikers yesterday, media blasted along with mounting screws...so it is all nice and clean now. This is getting tedious
Looky what I found the other day....
with a little bit of various grits of sand paper and then some aluminum polishing compound, these should shine up pretty good like my last set....(bottom pic)
Attached image(s)
Tom, post some really nice close up pics of the wheels you would like to swap...
I like mine polished, so if yours are decent it would save me a ton of time and sand paper to do a little exchange..
slight bit of progress today.
front hood is on for checking of gaps and to make sure everything is aligned properly. Gaps look good (better than the pic shows)
Front hood is good for paint. Rear hood is a bit molested in a couple of areas, so I sourced a better one to take it's place.
Attached image(s)
Your build is coming along fantastic, I'm a bit jealous.
But seriously... good job ditching the Rivs. I got a set for free from MattR and still felt like I got the bad end of the deal (inside joke).
So, are you going with velour interior?
No velour interior for me
Car will be slightly less retro without the Rivs, but that is OK...car will look a bit more "correct" with the Fuchs...
I may still use the Rivs for some skinny tires, if I really want the retro look.
get some 185 or 195s on them and they would work OK. But with my finding the Fuchs, I will probably mount a nice set of 205 Dunny Direzza Star Specs and be done with it.
Got the Rivs for free from a good buddy anyway, so not out any money on them...
just wish the body shop would get a bur under their saddle
Tom, they are in San Jose, CA.
He does great work he painted my last 914
If will be worth the wait. Just getting anxious.
Attached image(s)
Concours autobody, owner is Derrick. I believe their actual address is in Campbell CA.
no Cellette bench...
Yes Rob....but then again maybe not
Derrick does very nice work, so I don't wan to push too hard. He is doing a few special things for me, so I shouldn't complain....
I would just like to have a freshly painted white car to work on in the garage. I have a pile of stuff to go on the car once it is home....
I will put all the exhaust on the car at SPORTECH up on the rack, makes it much easier than crawling around on the garage floor at my house.
Physically the car will be pretty much done once it comes home, other than a few trim items.
Most of the rubber seals will be new from Mikey914
new carpet set from Morph...I still have to order that
then it will be just a bunch of little detail items I will be doing myself, to make it a little more of "my" car.
a little more work...
got the fog lights taken apart, cleaned. Sanded and painted the housings, cleaned the chrome retaining ring...reassembled...
Attached image(s)
some slow progress on the '75.
left side is pretty well stripped down and also the right front fender...just the right rear to be stripped and then we are ready for body work
also picked up a better rear deck lid from Koozy (Mike K) thanks Mike.
On Friday we were going up to Auburn to visit our daughter and I had found a set of Factory Fuchs that just happen to have a nice set of older Hoosiers...I plan on seeing how much grip they still have before dismounting the Hoosiers and polishing up the wheels.
Anyway I went to Rancho Cordova, and picked up the wheels, thanks Chilli (MikeW), and we then continued up to Auburn...had a great weekend there.
So now the garage is getting pretty full of parts. Heat exchangers, exhaust, 4 Rivs, 4 Fuchs, Koni adjustable front shocks, and lots of little bits and pieces, along with a bag full of stuff from Mikey914.....

and
Attached image(s)
today pulled the car out of the body shop and put it up on a lift and installed the complete 73-74 2.0L heat exchangers and the Monza muffler.
This sounded much better than the '75 heat exchanger/muffler combination.
Later I will find a decent 2.0L stock muffler for modification...
The Monza will do for now.
the car is very clean underneath. When the motor and tranny were out for rebuild the bottom of the trunk and heat shield were painted. The car has newly rebuilt axles/CVs, newer heater flappers, repainted engine tin, engine bar.
Only clean up still needed is to spiff up the trailing arms and the brake shields...
The paint on them looks pretty good, just needs a good cleaning.
Things are coming along............all be it very slowly.
the very beginnings of real live body work today....
filler placed and ready to be sanded to proper contours...
now to see how long it takes to get the whole thing to primer
Attached image(s)
more real body work happening...today.
car should be in primer in the next couple of days...ready for block sanding...
Attached image(s)
Nice. I'm sure you'll be driving the heck out of it in no time...
that is the plan Rob....
Hopefully within the next month...
I am keeping my fingers crossed
from what I have seen you are making good progress on "Dad's Car"
my latest acquisition....thanks Eric!
Now I am going to have Koni adjustables front and rear...
I am going to remove the front struts and paint them in the retro Koni orange to match the rears....
Phoenix Red looks to be a pretty close match....and I have some of that left over from the Puttputt.
Attached image(s)
primer now completed, ready for blocking and paint
Attached image(s)
So close!
Can't wait to see some color on this one.
should look a whole lot like yours Dan...
What wheels are you going to run on yours since you sold the Repops?
My factory 4 lug Fuchs are going to the wheel polisher in the next few days.
Well.......Dan........
Running what seems to be 80's VW Riv's. Most don't like them, but I do. I like the deeper dish on the lip. I painted the spokes black to kinda get that "911SC" look if that makes sense?
Leeving my bumpers alone, trying to make it look like something Porsche might have done if the 914 stayed around for another couple of years. So pretty much leaving 95% stock, just trying a couple of late 70's, early 80's updates to it.
I have a set of Rivs for my car also...trying to decide what I am going to do with the tires...
streets on the Rivs or the Fuchs and then AX tires on the other set
My car is also going to stay with the big bumpers. This is my 5th 914 and all the others had earlier bumpers...so this is a bit different. In some ways I like the big bumpers because so many others seem not to like them...I tend to be a bit of a contrarian.
My car is a Appearance group car, so I have vinyl sail panels (with new factory material) and fog lights, console etc.
Have you gotten all the A/C stuff off your car now?
Yup! AC stuff is about 90% gone and repaired. The engine bay is all stock again and just last night I was doing my initial fitting for a new front trunk floor (Thank you GPR!) I plan on finishing that up this weekend. I'm also going to install an LE spoiler.
Here's the only picture I have with current rim/tire set-up. This was just a few weeks back with other local teeners, my wife Michelle with Coffee in hand. I have the little black center caps and lug caps on it now, looks good I think. Once the front trunk is done, I'm pretty much done. Time to just drive the thing.
Attached image(s)
The engine bay shelf was a real PITA to fix. I had to source a weather strip channel and fab up a piece to graft into the shelf. The arrow points at the piece the dealer litterally tin snipped out of the 914.
This was after I repaired the damage and painted this side. The rest of everything was really solid, thank God!
Attached image(s)
The tin on the engine was no different. I pretty much had to simply replace the damaged pieces. It was tin-snipped along the lines. Really, really hacked up. I have yet to see an AC install on a 914 I liked. I'm sure there are good installs, I just haven't seen one.
Attached image(s)
Had some time this evening so I decided to do a bit of polishing.
I had already stripped two of the wheels with oven cleaner so decided it was time to give it a whirl...
a bit of 1000 and 1500 grit, a little aluminum wheel polish and a buffing wheel on my cordless drill and this is what I came up with.
I left the recessed areas in a brushed finish and only polished the raised petals and the rim....
Came out pretty nice for about an hour and a half of time...
better than what they started looking.
Attached image(s)
Very nice. How will you preserve the finish?
I will put on a nice coat of wax and after I get the tires mounted I will wax again....
I did this with my last 914 four lug Fuchs and it worked very well...
Once mounted they should look a lot like this except on a white '75
Attached image(s)
You make some pristine racers Dan.
Thanks
I enjoy building them.
I just should have hung on to a couple of them...
'70 1.7L in Tangerine
'73 2.0L in Delphi Green Metallic
'70 2.7L RS in Ivory
Attached image(s)
yes the oven cleaner removes the anodizing...
leaves the entire surface of the wheel in a matte finish...
Can't wait to see it out on the course, Dan. Looks like it's moving along quickly now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ya. Please do the same for me... ha ha ha
thanks Mike, any movement on the 2.7L?
he must have all the heads done by now? Doesn't he?
saving the $135 - $150/wheel for polishing will give me alittle more cash for other improvements
drat......two of the wheels will not strip completely...
I have used 4 cans of HD oven cleaner, brillo pads and scuff pads and can not get all the anodizing off of the last two wheels.
I may take one over to Sportech on Monday PM and see about a little media blast...
if that works then I will finish them all the same with the media blast recessed areas and polished rims and raised spokes...if not then I guess it is off to the wheel polisher after all
bummed, since the first two turned out so nicely and stripped easily....
Wheeels went to polisher yesterday afternoon...
didn't want to do it, but had no alternative.
They will look all shiny and new in a week.
Now to get my 205x50x15 Dunny Direzza star specs ordered.
Those are going to look great on your 914!
tires have arrived and a muffler that I have been wanting has become available so I will only have to do some tidying up instead of hacking a virgin stock muffler
I will be removing the stock exhaust pipe, since I want a true twin pipe instead of the vintage rallye 3 pipe look. There are a few holes that need to be repaired but nothing major.
Polished stainless pipes that are about 2 inches longer will be installed also.
Entire muffler will be bead blasted, repairs done and then painted to match the heat exchangers.
Hopefully will close the deal on the muffler in the next day or so....
Car is supposed to be white by tomorrow PM, we will see. fingers crossed
then it is suspension and reassembly time....

I want to pass on a tip to Dan and all others with polished wheels or anything else in polished aluminum. There is a product called S100 corrosion protectant, that when applied will give you long term protection to the surface. When you buy it look for the spec sheet, you will be impressed. Not really a secret but we have been using it for years. I usually apply it before delivery to the customer so all that is needed is car wash soap and water to maintain that shine. Al Weidman
PS: Your worst enemy is brake dust that sits and gets wet.
thanks for the tip Al. Where do you get it from?
let there be WHITE
L908 Grand Prix white to be precise. some pics of white
Attached image(s)
and some more
Attached image(s)
Paint!
thanks guys
once it is all painted and the body panels are all reattached
I need to see exactly what I will need to reassemble. Rubber seals etc...
I think I am going to reposition the gauges that are in the center console into a small 3 hole panel under the edge of the dash....
remove the console and just have a lot of nice new clean carpet...
I like the look of the interior without the console.
New complete carpet kit, cap for the dash and it should be an acceptable interior for a daily driver.
Seats are pretty decent, and I can upgrade those down the line.
I bought a new CD/radio/mp3/IPod player from Circuit city last week on sale....$88 plus some nice little JBL speakers for $49 that will plug into the stock speaker grills. The CD player has a USB input for my ipod that will charge it and display the ipod information on the dash unit. It also has a built in blue tooth with an external mic. Should work nice. Just need to get down to Kragens and pick up the new chrome completely retractable antenna, sound system will be complete....I do have a small external amp that I can also use with it, if it needs a little help.
Wheels should be done by Tuesday and I will get the new tires mounted at Wheel Techniques. Just need to get the billet center caps ordered from ISP for the wheels and they will be complete.
L908, that looks brighter than mine which is the L80E I believe? Light Ivory.
Over the years, I've come to really like solid colors on 914's. They go good with the body lines and accenting black sections like sail vinyl, rockers etc.
Very cool thread! Can't wait to see this one come together.
the car was originally L80E, and had been repainted at least 4 times, always in some shade of white....I decided I wanted it a bit brighter so went with the L908....
I think it will look very nice once the gloss black valences, rockers and engine grills are installed...
I have new targa vinyl in factory correct patten, and the top will be repainted in a matte black.
Also having the stock exhaust opening on the rear valence filled since the two exhausts I will be using exit under the valence.

OoOooo I like the looks of this project! Which Vitaloni mirros to be specifc? I have what's commonly refered to as the "baby turbo" mirrors on mine, aka bendy rubber units!
Also seen here:
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/attachments/alfa-romeo-parts-sale-wanted/126468d1230753186-vitaloni-baby-turbo-mirrors-new-dsc05118.jpg
I have a set of those exact mirrors, as well as two factory stock mirrors...
I will try them both, and decide which I like better.
painter was supposed to make some more progress over the weekend, hope to see some tomorrow.
fingers crossed
Just returned from the body shop.
Car is completely painted, all panels are done, even the back sides of the hoods and doors.
Now a little assembly of those parts and it can get back to me for the final assembly of all the little bits....maybe next week I will have a car pretty close to being driven.
Still need to have all the valences painted, but that is all easy stuff and can be put on after the rest of the car is reassembled.
Congrats!
I have a lot of spares, extras, and odds and ends if you run into any holes when you are reassembling things...
thanks Rob,
since the car was already disassembled when I came onto it, I will not be sure what all I need until I start the reassembly process.
by the way I have those antenna pieces for you.
small baby steps today.
got my wheels back from the polisher and had my new Dunny Direzza star specs mounted...
all four look just like this...they will look really nice with the new billet center caps.
car should be ready for reassembly tomorrow
bling alert
Attached image(s)
Nice job... talk about pimping your ride...
Nice!
thanks....
I have always wanted a set of fully polished Fuchs....
now to see how much it takes to keep them looking like that....
a bit of polish now and then...
nice part is they partially polished the insides as well, so they will be much easier to keep clean, since they are nice and smooth..just not the high gloss polish of the outside.
now if I just had a completed car to mount them on
thanks Tom.
from what I have found reading about the caps that ISPWest sells/makes, the ones that are specifically made for real factory Fuchs seem to fit well. Maybe a bit tight, but no real problems.
I have not got mine yet, but I will report how it goes when I do.
got the word this afternoon that the major body panels are all back in place, doors and hoods are where they belong again. Now the reassembly of all the little stuff can begin.
I can bolt on the refurbished Fuchs and the new Dunnys.
New sail/targa vinyl, new koni adjustable shocks, new 140# rear springs, some new rubber pieces from Mikeys 914 (and probably some more to be ordered), new front sway bar, complete the heater connections, etc, etc, etc.
engine grill, valences, and rockers will be done in gloss black...
now the real reassembly can begin....
Attached image(s)
Very clean!
new tire/wheel combination installed. It is amazing to me how just changing the tires/wheels makes the car look much sharper....
I will be getting 10-15mm of spacers for the rear and some 80mm studs....
I have tons of room....~1.75 inches from tires to fender lip and I want to fill it out a bit more.
bottom of motor and tranny are CLEAN!
things are starting to move along...
also installed the twin pipe stock muffler....looks nice
Attached image(s)
That's looking really nice Dan!
The fuchs that came on my 914 when I bought it had spacers in the front with correct longer lug bolts. The spacers were even hub-centric. I let the spacers go with the tires/wheels because you pretty much need them up front seems.
Are your fuchs factory or aftermarket?
Factory....
my spacing issue is in the rear. Inside of tire is too close to the inside of the top of the wheel well. And I have plenty of room outside...so out they go
Tom,
the motor and tranny were completely rebuilt before the body/paint work started, they were both cleaned at that time..
notice how dry the bottom of the motor is...?
on another note....just sent a PM to Mikey914 to order up just about all new rubber, and also one to Morph for carpet kit and dash vinyl....
the person that built the motor and tranny has been doing Porsche repair for nearly 30 years now...
He builds some very nice dry motors....
He was taught by the person that helped me build this motor...and after 3 years of abuse it was dry as a bone...
Attached image(s)
I loved that Phoenix Red car you had.
Dan, I have been looking for spacers but have only found 1/4 inch. Where did you find the 10-15 mm ones? Al. BTW your wheels look great. Always been partial to full polish myself.
CIP1.com has them listed but they are out of stock..
They have 7mm in stock for $18 each.
I may have to stack them... or have some milled at a machine shop....that sounds too much like $$$ to me though
got all the rubber pieces ordered from Mikey914. Still waiting to hear back from James (morph) on the carpet and vinyl
lights, headlight lids etc gettting back in place.
still need to get the new vinyl onto the targa bar and sail panels.
more baby steps...since we are waiting on rubber items I just ordered from Mikey914, started doing some other stuff.
outside door handles installed
right and left outside mirrors installed
studs installed on front hubs and alloy lug nuts bead blasted and installed. Rears will be done when I get the spacers.
Front turn signals installed and working properly (with new lenses)
Rear tail lights installed and working properly
extended the pipes on the twin pipe muffler....sounds much better now...just need to get the SS 2" pieces to slide over for cosmetics now They were a bit too short...now they are about 14" long in all.
also installed the little round vents for the flow thru ventilation in the door jams.
Attached image(s)
this is twinpipe version 2.0 this one is much quieter, new SS 2" exhaust pipes will be installed and polished
Porsche reflector installed
eyebrows installed
rear trunk seals installed the originals were in good shape
new targa top holders installed (thanks Mikey914)
Attached image(s)
Looking good!
It's like I'm looking at my twin!
yes, that is for sure.
It will change a bit soon when the Porsche negative graphic goes on the sides.
I just wish I could speed up the process a bit, but couldn't order some stuff until the reassembly began...now just waiting on some pieces to get really cracking on it.
nothing internal done to the muffler...just cap off the stock exhuast exit, and then drill two 2" ports for the new pipes.
all done intuitively, similar to a 911 sport muffler.
Just a little deeper sound than stock, and I like the look of the twin pipe!
not loud at all as long as the internals stay stock.
If I keep this car the next HP increase will come from a 2056 running stock injection like my orange car was...or it will be a high revving small bore 6.
the 6 would be my preference, but who knows.
I am going to start some research on that type of motor in the near future...
A good friend of mine has years of experience building just that type of motor and will be a wealth of information.
this motor would have looked great in a my white car
my GC motor has no air injection pump, and all ports have been blocked.
'73-'74 heat exchangers, '73-'74 muffler twin piped.
and the motor is fresh....so it should be pretty close to a 73 in power
won't be anything like my old 2056 (regardless of the color of the motor ) but it will be a decent daily driver and AX PAX weapon.
I didn't say it couldn't be done. I just wanted to know how so I could do it to mine.
Optimizing HP and torque over a RPM range suited for the type of driving one will be doing is not a factor of relieving back-pressure and increasing flow. (Ask me how I know) Velocity and optimization of scavenging is the key to HP and torque and where on the RPM range you will see the benefits of such mods. That would be the header first. Without knowing what to do with that, willie-nilly muffler mods will be of little effect.
Crap, I'm starting to sound like JP...
Outside of engine component changes; dimensions of exhaust ports and piping are the varying factors of scavenging effects in the exhaust system (if we are not trying to bake potatoes. ie: block up the system with a radically restrictive muffler). I thought the discussion was about the exhaust and it's effects on "power" so I was speaking to that alone. I think you are mistakenly thinking I am discounting your assertion that mapping the exhaust is a good idea. To the contrary, I think knowing what to do with the exhaust is critical. I just happen to know that getting "more" flow isn't the answer. Having the correct "flow" is. If it were, we'd all be running 3 inch pipes.
geeze, do you two ever sleep?
I am amazed you can carry on an intelligent conversation at such an hour
I am just the opposite....to bed by around 11:30 and up by 5:30-6AM....

hope to get my new seals and such in the next day or so....then I can get this thing back on the road
should have the sway bar and the new shocks/springs in as well.
Attached image(s)
nice shiny windshield trim installed today.
twin pipe version 2.0 is just about ready for final welding, bead blast, paint and polishing of the SS tips
installed longer studs and billet rear wheel spacers toady along with alloy lug nuts.
Rubber should be here tomorrow or Monday
was going to install my new rear shocks and springs today and found that the top of my existing shocks has a coarse thread and the new shocks have a fine thread....
Have to find new shock top attachment hardware or I will have to retap the one part that holds the hat onto the shock, and then attach the whole thing with a new nut on top with the proper threads Bummer, thought the rear would be complete today...
Oh well there is always next week...
Attached image(s)
all the rubber seals I had ordered came in today....thanks Mikey914....great stuff...fits like it is supposed to...
Got the window squeegees installed, started the wing window triangles.
got the engine lid to rear window seal installed.
need to get the outer door seals installed, finish wing windows, then install new targa front seal.
more little steps....
Looking real good Dan.
also a few other little goodies arrived from Mikey914 (Mark).
new reproduction shift knob
new rollers for door stays
new bushings for outer door locks
the new knob is really nice and will add a nice touch to the interior....thanks Mark
Thanks Dan....
things are coming along....hopefully within the next couple of weeks it will be road worthy...
I'll tell you, much of how a car turns out is in the details. I cannot claim anything interior work on mine, but someone sure spent time and bucks getting it 100%.
New shift knob (stock)
944 seat belts
All new seals-targa, doors etc
Everything just looks either new or very little use.
Makes a big difference.
Attached image(s)
Carpet is original, I need to get some matts on it.
That color is hard to find.
I actually wouldn't mind have cut-pile carpet, might be something I do as an upgrade someday?
What is the radio ? Nice design, Looks retro'ish ...
Root's radio looks like a CDR 220 from an early Boxster or 996?
a couple more items off the list...
a few more seals installed...
wing window seals installed
outer door seals installed
inner door seals installed
front trunk main seal installed
A pillar trim installed
Muffler has been media blasted, repaired and painted.
twin pipe SS tips polished
Silver PORSCHE lettering on engine deck lid.
Saturday, goes to upholsterer to install sail panel and targa bar vinyl.
Carpet kit is on it's way here.
did some cursory cleaning of interior bits.
Attached image(s)
Looking good Dan!
With what all you've tackled already much more complicated on this & prior 914s - I'm surprised you're not doing the sale/rollbar vinyl yourself, as that's a pretty easy & straightforward item for almost anyone to take on. Pelican tech atrticles has one on it, as does someone on here (SoCalAndy IIRC). Could save some coin for some other trick items for it!
Happy 4th!
I am not doing it because it was part of having the car painted...
Dang, Tom--mine only sat for 10 years!
I agree on the parts. Back in 1997 I thought part prices were bad. . .
yes, it gets tougher each time....this is my 5th 914 in the last 20 years. It is interesting how the little parts are becoming harder to find ( at least at decent prices)
Luckily I have some very good friends that have helped me source quite a few things...at very affordable prices...
I sourced a complete set of driver and passenger seat belts from a spec boxster build by a good friend.
I got the complete 2 sets for $0, that is my kind of price. Now to see if these can be made to work in my '75. Shouldn't be too hard.
Dan - very nice build, cool to see coming together.
Dan and Tom, wish I had a small portion of your experience of teeners, sure would help me out now with trying to figure how these go together with my first one.
Dave
sail panel and targa vinyl installed. Bottom trim in place...now for the rest of the targa and sail panel trim.
Big item today...
Front Koni adjustables installed
Rear Koni adjustables and brand new 140# springs installed.
sway bar will be installed once I get the backing plates in.
Porsche negative side stripe is ordered but not in yet.
Carpet kit is on order and should be arriving soon.
also got a set of seat belts from a Spec Boxster build....for free . Looks like they should work with no problem.
Attached image(s)
no new sail trim parts as of yet...those are ones I had in my parts stash, and they are very nice (the bottom ones).
The small ones are in pretty good shape and with a little polishing will work fine.
the larger down pieces on the sail panel I have are OK but not fantastic, so I will be looking for some better ones as time goes on. Right now I just want to get things buttoned up, and drive the car. I can then make changes to trim pieces along the way.
"parts stash" - when I first got on here I could not understand why everybody had some many different parts in their stash, and swore that I was just going to find one/pair/set of whatever I needed & that was that!
Needless to say I "discovered" why & have blown my pet theory to hell-n-gone since then! ... always finding something just a but better!
Looks nice any-hoo!
I see NOS rear sail trim come up on evil-bay, TheSamba, here, club, etc. from time to time, so you can always pop a new set on there later when they turn up!
I have a few items here and there, but this build will just about clear out my stash...
Which is fine... Less stuff to store.
OK,,,,
progress
rockers painted(gloss black) and installed
front valence painted(gloss black) and installed
rear valence painted(gloss black)o and in process of being installed
all trim on targa bar installed
front targa top seal installed on windshield header and A pillars
a few pics
and before anyone starts, the trailing arms and associated stuff will be cleaned and painted once I get the car home.
Attached image(s)
More parts for reassembly....thanks MikeK....
perfect rain tray (with a little cleaning)
funnels and down tubes
tin seals for down tubes
front targa top holders
should be sometime next week.
Attached image(s)
The 914 sure is turning out great Dan!
I love all the attention to detail.
getting there more slowly than I would like
I have my fingers crossed that I will have mine on the road in the next two weeks, maybe a bit sooner.
Then I will begin my refurb of the interior....still waiting on my Morph carpet set
But at least it will be drivable in the mean time.
almost done
front and rear bumpers installed
rear valence modified and installed
New fully retractable antenna installed
Full four wheel alignment completed
door panels installed
still waiting on carpet set.
Negative side stripes still to be installed so it will look like an LE in "Salt and Pepper" '75 version
should be driving by tomorrow
Attached image(s)
As always, that is schweet Dan!
What did you use to paint the bumpers?
Dan, that is looking sooooo good!
I'm almost done doing a SSI backdate on mine. Been spending time painting all the heater tin stuff ect. I'm hoping to have mine back down tomorrow. I could start it now, but I still have....4 pieces left to install and the shift bar. That's it!
Nice job on the rear valance mod too! .... looks like it could be a OE option!
thanks for the tip Al
car is now a driver...
did some little things today.
cleaned up dash face and installed new stereo head unit. tomorrow the speakers and all the wiring will be done.
center console, none of the gauges were working so had to do a little wiring today.
Had to run 12V switched, 12V constant, ground and temp sensor wiring from the tunnel to the gauges...
but they all work now with lighting and everything even the clock is keeping good time
Some DPO had all the lighting done, but no power to the gauges...
couple of shots of car cleaned up a bit and in the garage.
Attached image(s)
I had considered a power antenna but for now just a new fully retractable manual unit.
Car had no antenna before the restoration.
had a good time driving around today.
It will be even better once I get the stereo squared away and the new speakers installed.
stereo is installed, wiring complete, speakers installed....it actually plays music
Bluetooth hands free, mp3, usb, operates my ipod. streams music from my ipod or my android phone over blue tooth..or thru the usb...not bad for under $100
Dang, that could be the twin to mine!
Attached image(s)
other than interior very close......
first real trip of about 140 miles went off without any issues...ran smooth and strong...
Attached image(s)
Fry's had them on sale a few weeks back.
Dual is the brand....IIRC about $88
I will have to go out and take a look for the model number
Rob,
XDM6400 by Dual from Fry's
with bluetooth module
detachable face plate
plays music from my android phone by USB or by bluetooth, and charges at the same time
plays music from my ipod by USB and charges at the same time.
Also you can control the phone or the ipod from the tuner, you do not have to use the ipod or phone controls.
Also shows the music etc on the phone or ipod....
intact front plastic targa top holders in the trunk placed along with the nice repops of the rear rubber holders by Mikey914(Mark)
Rain tray cleaned and ready to install once I get the proper hardware for it and the down tube funnels.
Got a spare tire washer and hold down and now the spare is solidly in place in the front trunk.
Rewired my foglight/headlight switch so the fogs now come on with the parking lights and the headlights, not just the headlights.
Reworked my rear deck lid latch pin so the trunk would not pop open over bumps...needed to square and redefine the little ledge on the pin....
Next up will be the carpets which should be here in the next day or two....
While the seats are out for the carpet install I will do a little work on some of the vinyl. It is loose in a couple of spots so a little adhesive and it should be good until I find some better seats or get these rebuilt/upholstered.
things are starting to be the way I want them overall....
It's nice getting all the little things sorted out.
My 914 is along the same path, getting very picky about little things on it which is NICE!
Been driving it with top off for weeks now back and forth to work. The new SSI's produce massive heat in the mornings, fresh air fan works for the drive home etc.
Tunes sound decent (Need better speakers).
Just nice to get it, turn the key and drive it.
painted horn ring on steering wheel today...
cleaned rear trunk carpet to see if I could get it to look presentable...
been using Folex for years.. If anything will get the stains out of the carpet it will be Folex...
We will see after it all dries... Has to be better than it was...
By the way, you can get Folex at HomeDepot...
still show it available online....and in Norcal, still in stores.
Dan,
Congratulations on a great rebuild she looks fabulous!!!!!!
Vysoc
a few more little things.
Rain tray installed, rain funnels and down tubes installed. Down tube rubber grommets in the engine tin installed.
Still waiting on carpet
Dan - TC'sGarage has the grommets on the tin for the CHT wire, you can order them online (only place I've found it).
http://www.tcsgarage.com/store/021119569!PACPO/GROMMET+FOR+HEAD+TEMP+SENSOR+914
Got my Morph carpet kit in Charcoal grey loop a few days ago.
Began the install tonight....did the passenger side long and placed the forward footwell piece....just placing everything in dry right now so it can sit in the sun/heat for awhile before I put it down with double sided carpet tape.
Also placed the piece behind the passengers seat....
Tomorrow I will complete the drivers side and remove the console so I can place that piece...
I plan on leaving it in this way for a while so everything will start to take shape..then I will stick it down more permanent except for the two main floor pieces.
Going to be taking it on a long cruise to Thunderhill this weekend....leave at 0dark30 on Saturday morning and then staying until Sunday afternoon. About 190 miles each way.
Be there to perform my duties for the GGR DE/TT/CR series as "race control"
A little overnight tent camping, should be a good weekend.
Carpet kit installed....interior back together.
I removed the center console but kept the panel the gauges are installed in. I then used the brackets that held the console in place to attach the center panel to.
This is temporary until I decide what I am going to do....get a new center console or just mount the gauges in a gauge pod...under the dash.
that will do it for this week, since I will be leaving for Thunderhill early in the morning.
Boy does that charcoal grey loop carpet brighten up and clean up the look of the interior.
Also installed my repro stock shift knob from Mikey914....looks great..
good trip this weekend
about 200 miles each way from home to ThunderHill and back...
Car ran without any issues.
right at 30mpg at 70-75mph all the way.
On the way home it was in the mid 90s most of the way and the car ran without getting hot and some stop and go traffic in the low 90 temps.
No pinging or knocking running on 87 Octane...
Got lots of positive comments from many of my 911/Boxster/996/997 owner friends.
At least in my neck of the woods, a well preserved or restored 914 is still considered cool and a real Porsche.
I'll take some more pics next week....
I ran 87 octane in my 2056 for 3 years with no ping, knock and no other issues...only time I ran 91 or 92 was when it was going to be on track and the ambient temps were going to be very hot.
car is now due for the first oil change, check the valve lash and a few last installs.
Tuna Can to be installed along with front sway bar.
negative side stripe should be here soon for install.
Car is being driven daily and is running like a top...
Cool!
I pretty much drive mine daily unless the weather is just really bad.
Tuna Can is on, holes are drilled for the sway bar and the inside backing plates are installed. Custom U tabs will be welded to the A arms.
decided to go ahead and install new Factory rubber brake hoses.
fresh air blower needed a bit of coaxing back to life and the heater booster blower is now working...
so I will have heat once the weather gets cooler.....not the next couple of days since it is supposed to be over 100* in my neighborhood tomorrow
Attached thumbnail(s)
Sway bar is now on with new bushings. All hardwared was bead blasted and painted.......what a difference in the turn in and handling.
first tuna can was seeping so emailed Automotion and they 2nd day aired me a replacement at no cost...
New one installed and seems to be staying dry.
after getting all my heating and fresh air blowers up and running decided the various knobs needed some attention....fresh air knobs (two black and one red) cleaned up nicely.
Now the heater knob was faded to a nice pink....
Decided that I would try a little polishing...
100grit, 400 grit, 600 grit, 1000 grit and then some polishing compound on a polishing wheel......
now it is nice and red again Worth the 20 minutes of polishing.
Next will be a 6 point harness for the driver's seat for AX competition.
Looking for a nice old school harness bar for the shoulder portion...lap belt will be intalled with eye bolts in the normal seat belt locations. The stock and aftermarket belts will be installed in tandem, so I have street belts and competition belts
picked up a nice used Welt harness bar this morning...
Now waiting for my Momo 6pt harness to arrive. It has clip in attachments at all mounting points, so I will be installing clip eyes on the bar, instead of the usual wrap mount. This way the harness can be easily removed between events.
I will post some pics of the install when it is done...stock seat belts will be mounted in tandem with this for street use.
well the harness and the bar are installed....worked out nicely.
AXed the car for the first time last weekend...
Car ran flawlessly, and turned much better than I had counted on.
First 2 runs ran with front shocks at 1/2 firm and rears at full firm...was a bit tail happy.
So I tightened up the front end to full firm...car was well balanced, no push and could still steer the rear with the throttle (which is my driving style )
Finished first in class and 4th overall in PAX (performance AX index).
Not bad for it's first use in anger, and I still haven't adjusted air pressures beyond making sure all tires were at 38psi when I left for the venue.
I am running Dunny Direzza Star Specs on the stock Fuchs...205x50x15s.
I may try a lower pressure at the next event but the 38 worked well with the suspension settings and the course design for that event.
So far my build for a nice street car/daily driver and AX car have pretty much met my planned expectations.
Pretty cool to get down to dailing in all the little things compared to cutting out cancer.
I will say I've been enjoying driving mine so far this year. It's just reg maint at this point and drive!
well I have found a small leak on the motor looks like it is either a galley plug or possibly the front main seal....
so next week the motor will come out and I will see what it is and repair as needed. This is the only sign of a leak (about 2K miles now) and it is less than a drop a day, but I want a completely dry motor.
While the motor is out I will detail the engine and engine compartment along with detaching and re-indexing the right trunk hinge...it is too high and the trunk lid on the right sits up in the front right corner....not a big deal, but it bugs me and since the motor will be out, it will be the perfect time to do a little fiddling.
It'll be on jackstands for months now!
NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!
It will be back on the road by the 24th of October.
Have to have it ready for its final AX shake down of the season in early November.
Then I should be ready for my assault on our overall PAX championship for next year.
the very first pic in this thread was only a sample pic of a '75 that I had found....and yes the front is very high on that car...I would never have one at that height.
yes my car is a Cali car but it sits much lower than that.
Go give your muffler a good try....it is worth it...
I still have the Monza/Ansa in my garage...don't know if I will end up running it or not...
Enjoying my twin pipe right now
Attached image(s)
While ur in there you may as well!!!!!! Caution self welding jack stands have been seen in your neighborhood.
no worries Andy....
car will be ready for the road on or before the 24th of October.
I really don't like long drawn out projects, so this will be done quickly.
I have never understood projects that take years and years.....just not my way of doing things...guess I need immediate gratification
I read books the same way, once I start I just read until it is completed.
my little list of items is complete....
motor removed and front crank seal replaced...
Tranny with new 2nd, 4th and 5th sliders.
truck hinges repositioned and rewelded into proper places.
car is back on the street and ready for the last AX of the season in mid November.
Well done Dan! Keep it on the road.
I recently did a valve adjustement on mine.
Yesterday it wouldn't start, click, click and was able to use the screwdriver method at the starter to get it going. So new ignition switch is on order as of yesterday.
Started fine this morning, we'll see if I have to get on the ground after work again today though.
But, I'm keeping mine on the road and driving it daily.
thinking of getting some tires for my set of Rivs....some good winter (decent traction in the wet stuff) tires...
any suggestions from the masses...probably will go with 205x60s or 195x65s depending on brand...
195, let alone 205mm of tire seems to me, alot for a 90hp engine to push along. I really like my 185's on the Riv's. It's plenty.
My new ign switch arrived, although I haven't installed it yet, 914 has been starting just fine.
You get your winter tires. I have a "Winter" rig to drive.
Attached thumbnail(s)
I had 195 Michelins on 8 spokers on my Orange car and they fit and looked good, so I will probably go with that size for streets, although the car had 205x60s on Rivs for rollers when it was at the body shop, so I know they will fit with no clearance issues.
The Rivs I have are like brand new and I even have a set of brand new center caps.
Since I am running wheel studs instead of bolts, changing wheels is nothing more than switching the wheels and installing with my set of acorn wheel nuts instead of the factory wheel ball seat nuts.
Dan, I really like the look of your square back....
Any pics of it after the paint job?
Attached image(s)
car is running great and doing well at AX...can't wait for an entire season next year
no more oil leak (it was very minor but bugged me anyway)
I will make a few changes during the off season...
I have sourced a very nice set of 2.0L SSIs (I actually sold these and the buyer never installed them, so I am buying them back )
may try a bit more camber front and rear
will probably either recover my seats of see if I can source some Corbeau Classics or something like that...
pics from AX 11/13/2010 not too bad of a day....finished 1st in my class by 2 seconds, over 6 other competitors and with our PAX index I finished 3rd overall out of 110 cars.
Pretty and fast
Attached image(s)
Had a little "free" time this afternoon and decided to start cleaning under the fenders a bit.
Cleaned and painted the strut covers and the A arms...then decided to break out my red caliper paint.
not too bad for for a small bit of time.
now to turn the car around and do the driver's side
Attached image(s)
Nice
thanks Mike....not bad for a small amount of time...
maybe a bit much for a daily driver and AX car
Mike did you get the motor gone?
Naaa... not too much. Looks great. The engine buyer is coming down next week. Nice guy. Maybe I can talk him into coming out for an AX event.
I can see I need to take the wheels off and spend some time washing the inside of them...
they are just as shiny as the outside when clean
Forget about the insides. They get dirty after the first stop...
yeah, but I can't help myself
have to have it as light as possible for next season....have to make my charge at PAX
have to keep the car up to scratch and make sure I get to most if not all the events next year, so I can keep up with the car.
I hear ya. When I go to the shop and look at my car I see so many things I could do. But, I'm going to settle for running at this point. What class has no drivers in it? Is it 6? I may just jump in that one to hear everyones opinion on how it's not classed correctly but there will be no drivers in the class that can formally protest. That should be fun. he he he
Wait, I think it's #3
so I sent an email about a 3.0L 6 with PMOs and a 915 set up for a 914 that is for sale
Interesting ...congrats.
Me too. Did you hear back?
not yet...I think it may be a come on...
probably $2500 for the tranny and then some big bucks for the motor
I am going to run in AX16 next season but will gauge myself against the cars in AX11-AX15
From the results of our last event I would have place in the top three in all of those classes
And that was on a course I felt benefited cars wtih HP....which my car has very little of
That's what I was thinking, but it was worth a try. Blown up with a bent crank since there was no belt on the thing. Or he found it on the side of the road...
that was my first question....does it run?
my guess the price posted was for the tranny...and the motor if it is any good at all will be more like $7500 or more.
Stranger things have happened....
What time did you reply to the ad? I wanna see if your ahead of me... he he he
just a little while ago....maybe 30-60 minutes ago.
I am sure you are ahead of me...
if the price and motor are decent, maybe we should go in 50/50 and then flip it.
I'll be surprised if we even get a reply. I believe there may be a zero left off of the price.
I had thought the same thing...the motor in the pic looks very nice for the price listed...
If your email box is filled with spam tomorrow, I'll know... ha ha ha
what time did you email the guy?
5:17pm
he posted shortly after noon thirty so his box would have exploded by noon thirty five
you are ahead of me by almost 5 hours
Chances are we are not the only Porsche folk that have responded to that ad
Rich B. posted his usual stuff after the original post so...
What you talkin' about Willis?
Bontempi posts P&C sets, stainless rockers, etc on there. If he saw the ad when he posted....
ah, got you....I figured some of that stuff might be his, but never checked to make sure.
Haven't seen Rich in many years...we used to run our 914-6s in the same class with GGR TT....he always whipped me pretty bad
I wasn't willing to run my car sideways from turn 7-10 at Laguna...Rich was...
Yep, he was one fast son-of-a-gun. Lots of trophies in his case. I always enjoy talking with him. He gave me a very good deal on a brand new "C" gear set for the orange car and always has sound advise.
definitely a good guy...
I have spoken to him a few times in the last couple of years, but haven't seen in probably 10 years.
He agreed to letting me write an article on him and his car but I have yet to get around to it. I should do it. He said it would be the first one he participated in.
which car, he had a killer type4 SCCA car as well as an original 914-6 (tangerine0 with a 3.0L in it...on 205s...he ran that car against my car with the 2.7RS motor in it until GGR changed the motor size class break...KM vs GM in the old days.
The white SCCA car with the "1.8"...
He still has that thing parked in the back of his shop.
OK, g-night. I get to go see Shrek (the musical) tomorrow with Maria's workmates. Company X-Mas thing... wooo hoooo. Never know, it may be good. I was surprised when I wet to see Wicked last year. The story they put together was full of surprises. Nothing like I had imagined.
had a little time today so I figured I would finish the driver's side calipers
now all 4 are nice and shiny...red.
slowly getting where I want it.
Attached image(s)
Nice. did you polish the inside of the wheel? I am sitting in the Orpheum theatre, waiting for Shrek to start.
nope not today...I will do the insides of the wheels once the rainy season is over in the spring.
just wanted to get the calipers done and get the struts cleaned and a quick coat of rattle can on them.
next up will be some work on the interior...need to do some work on the seats and dash...have to decide on recovering seats of sourcing some Corbeau Classics, recovering or putting on a dash cap.
Oh and I will install my new US version tail light lenses when they finally get here stuck in group buy hell right now...no fault of the person running the group buy...just needs information from some folks so he can get things off to the supplier.
may use a set of these if I can't find a decent set of Corbeaus at the right price
they have a set that has black on the edges like these and then a nice dark grey in the colored areas
Bottom seat cover is a complete separate piece, so it works just like the stock seat covers. Not one piece like some of the neoprene covers.
Attached image(s)
probably going to go with one of these...
http://www.americandashcaps.com/porsche/1970-76-porsche-914-dash-cap
914 looks great Dan! I've still been driving mine daily even though this is the time of year I'd rather park it. There's all sorts of sand on the roads right now. I need to finish up my T3 Squareback (very close) and keep the 914 indoors for the next 3-4 months.
Looks sharp!
the only reason I would be considering putting on a dash cap is because my current dash has several cracks in it.
This is no CW car, and is by no means a correct rebuild of a stock '75
As such I do to it as I want, as anyone should do with their car.
If I can't find seats that work with the stock back pad, I will remove it and just carpet the rear bulkhead and use whatever seats fit my mood, and my size.
This car was built for two purposes. To be my daily driver and to be a competent AX car. So far it has done well at both. Next season will be the real test...
great job the car looks awesome
how do you like the tires so far? i need some new shoes and have a narrow 74 with stock fuchs and want to get something that sticks really well.
also, care to share your source for those seat covers?
thanks, Dave
tires are 205x50x15s. Dunlop Direzza Star Spec Z1 200WR but seem to be much better than that in the stick department...have read some information saying that the tread wear rating should probably be closer to 100 like some lower level DOT Rs.
I have really been impressed with the Dunnys so far...I have driven on just about every DOT R available in the last 20 years along with Goodyear slicks.
While not in the territory of tires like Kumho V710s or Hoosier A6s, these are a very good compromise tire. They have performed very well with my suspension setup at AX so far.
On my previous car I ran V710s on custom 7" wheels under stock fenders along with a set of early Hankook Z212s on Fuchs...
2 events since the car was completed, and I finished at least 2 seconds in front of my next closest class competitor. One time it was a 944 on 7&8s with Hoosier A6s and the second time was against a 74 2.0L 914 running Nitto NT01s.
Finished 4th place overall and 3rd overall with our PAX index in the two events the car has run...planning a full on attack for 1st in PAX next season....
This car was built specifically to compete in the class that gave me maximum multiplication factor in our PAX indexes.
find seat covers here http://www.iggee.com
Attached image(s)
closeup....car looks pretty good
and it doesn't have to look like all the other 914s with early bumpers.
The big bumpers are really starting to grow on me, and I don't have to worry about them rusting
thanks to professional photog....Mike Koozmin for the great pics of my car in action
Attached thumbnail(s)
time to find some seats or seat covers and a dash cover...probably be my post Christmas/birthday present...
would love to find a pair of Corbeau Classic IIs but will probably end up going with a set of the black/grey Iggee seat covers.
Hey car looks great! Just had one question for ya, what was your suspension setup on your orange car? Cuz it does'nt look like the same setup you got on the white one. Good job on everything.
Phoenix Red '74 had 21 mm front torsion bars, 19mm sway bar, 180# rear springs
Front and rear custom valved Bilsteins. Car ride height set very low running about -2* camber in front and about -2.25* in rear.
Track duty on custom 7" steel rims running 205x50x15 Kumho V710s (very wide, almost a 225 in reality)
Grand Prix White '75 running stock front bar, with stock torsion bars, rear 140# springs. Adjustable Konis front and rear and sitting quite a bit higher. -1.25* camber in front and -1.50* camber in rear.
5 polished 4 bolt Fuchs showed up at my door this morning. They have been sitting bagged for several years so they all need some detailing and some polishing but not bad for the price... Good enough for street wheels.
A good friend from GGR TT/DE series converted his car to a 3.2L with GT flares and 5 bolt hubs several years ago...these have been sitting in his garage taking up space...he asked me if I wanted them....of course I said yes. These will work perfectly for street tires in the 205x60 or 195x65 size once I decide on a tire...have also thought of just going old school with a set and doing 165s for the street.
The Fuchs also came with 4 decent factory center caps....actually 3 of them are excellent...so I may do some swapping of center caps with my current 4 to get the best of the best.
Also received 2 7x16 Original Fuchs from same fellow.
These will probably be sold off to help pay for the street tires.
What is a decent pair of 7x16s worth these days?
Attached image(s)
since I have a set of polished Fuchs for my AX/street tires now,
what should I use for my strictly street tires?
Here are the choices....both are in my possession, so it is a wash for me.
some more of the Polished Fuchs (yes I have 9 of them )
or some more retro Riv repops?
Attached image(s)
I like both but the Rivs pop due to the black. I'd use the Rivs for a season and then switch it up next season if they don't suit yer fancy.
Dan,
The Rivs actually would be the thing, if you're still doing the retro idea.
so recently I have been thinking more about the rear visibility on my car. I have already done a high mounted 3rd brake light that can be seen in this thread http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=110057&hl=3rd+brake+light
After replacing my tail light lenses with some brand new repops....I decided it was time to do a little something with the inside of the tail light housing itself....
These things were never too reflective to begin with since it was just a silver (looks like paint) coating over plastic...
So I was thinking about how to make the housing more reflective...
Aluminum Foil Tape....did a quick job and it makes quite a bit of difference.
Short of having the guts of the lights "plastic chrome plated" I thought this might help.
First pic is what it looked like before I put on the tape. From what I have gleaned in other posts on this matter, most of our old housings look like this.
Attached image(s)
and
Attached image(s)
one more pic with less ambient light
No flash on the pic...the light you see is just from the running lights, no brake lights lit.
made quite a bit of difference with a little reflection going on and not just relying on the light of the bulb itself
Attached image(s)
normal bulbs, I have been considering LEDs but,....wanted to see what it would be like with a bit more reflective material first....then if it wasn't what I wanted I would pop for the LEDs.
For right now I am pretty satisfied with the amount of light.
Not bad for about 1/2 hour of cleaning and installation and about $5 for the Aluminum Foil Tape.
Pic for bcheney....

Thanks Dan!
Now we have to see it with the brake lights on
Got a little bored tonight so went out and removed my Momo leather shift knob and installed one of Mikey914s repops..
looks very nice. like it belongs there even
no pics yet, but I should be getting my good top from the body shop on Friday.
The top has been completely smoothed and then painted with matte black paint...should match the overall look of the sail panels....hopefully. Anyway it is a very straight clean top and will also have new seals on the sides and rear from Mikey914.
Anxious to see how it looks.
will post pics of the top as soon as I have it.
I am also going to make a guage panel from some black ABS sheeting. It will be mounted to the stock console upper bracket. The gauges will mounted horizontally under the edge of the dash instead of vertically like in the console.
I am not going for a perfect texture match...just a general look...with the matte black finish it should be pretty close...
If it doesn't look right then I will just strip it and do it another way...
that is part of the fun of not trying to do a perfect OE restoration...
I can do what ever suits my fancy.
this is a daily driver/AX car and maybe a track day or two in the future.
Yes, I was pretty happy with the way the lights turned out and I didn't want to have to either R&R the tail light assemblies to paint or mask off the entire rear of the car to get it done either...the tape was cheap quick and easy...And I could remove it if it didn't work
top is now smoothed and primed...underside is already painted
will be painted by this afternoon.
Also decided to try my Vitaloni mirrors for something a bit different.
These are mounted to the factory spots using the factory captured nuts in the doors.
I cut a piece of old bike inner tube for a gasket between the mirror base and the paint on the doors, so they won't leave any marks if I decide to remove them.
If I don't like them then I will go back to the factory mirrors...
they give the car a slightly different look

You know Dan...I'm liking the baby turbo mirrors. Hmm, wonder if I could pick some up for my 914?
I have had those around for years....took them off of one of my first 914s and replaced them with something else...
Anyway I decided to give them a try....they look pretty good and go with the top and the bumpers...
If I get tired of them I will just go back to the factory mirrors...
Just like to change things up once in a while
I might mount up my Monza 4 tip exhaust this weekend for a little more retro feel...
Dan, if you get a pair make sure to mount them to the stock holes...just need some longer bolts and a couple of washers to make them work with the factory captured nuts. Easy on and easy off.
I had to modify the base of each mirror a bit so the mirror head would sit level....I have seen a bunch of these over the years with the mirror head sticking up at the end because the base was not modified...
Looks good! I modified the base on my baby turbo to fit the curve of the door. My mirror is not in the stock location, but a couple inches down. I taped some sandpaper to my door with the gritty side up and slid the mirror back and forth on the paper till it had the correct curve.
Well, got bored again and decided to put the Monza 4 tip exhaust on.
Definitely sounds different than the stock muffler twin piped...not better or worse, just different
Next I will be mounting up a Bursch that will have the exhaust pipe modified to clear the valence with no stock opening...
Once I decide which one I want to keep long term I will modify/repair the valence to match.
Attached image(s)
Did some minor work to the twin pipe muffler and repainted it in High Temp paint...
now reinstalled on the car and the Monza resides again on the garage floor
Top is still not ready to install, waiting on new seals from Mikey914.
got the good top back from being smoothed and painted.
finish is black with a matte clear coat....
came out just about the way I had envisioned as far as finish color.
I am quite pleased. Now just awaiting my new rear and side targa top seals to finish it off.
one thing that I did notice, the new top is noticeably lighter in weight than the old top....I guess that pebble finish had some weight to it
Attached image(s)
The top turned out really nice Dan, I like it!
I haven't ever sanded a top smooth before, but had a 914 that someone sanded smooth and painted. I noticed the same thing, it was lighter.
Thanks Dan....I am very pleased with the way the roof turned out...and it is much easier to wipe over to keep clean without the rough surface of the original finish.
Got a wider angle shot? I'm liking the matte top, but I'd like to get a real overall impression.
I am truly loving your disregard for 'general knowledge', and trying out all the things that people tell you to throw away. It's always great to have people question the status quo.
People can do what they like to the targa tops. Myself, I sometimes opt for "other" options.
Attached image(s)
yeah Dan, I remember your steel top with the sun roof...that was nice...
thanks for the compliment Mark, I appreciate your comment. I have done enough of these now, that I try to put a little thought outside of the box for some elements.
It is gratifying to have some of my "out of the norm" ideas actually work pretty well.
Here are some shots of the new top and also you can see the baby turbo Vitalonis as well.
Car is coming together as I had originally envisioned for the most part.
As a side note. I coated the inside of the front turn signal buckets with the aluminum foil tape just as I did with the tail lights. Definite improvement in light emitted.
Attached image(s)
and a couple more....sorry
Attached image(s)
No problemo! ... more pix to add to my white & L80E 914s file for my resto ref!
Also noticing how nice & straight & even & flush all of your body seams are at the doors, F&R deck lids & even headlights/brows - which all too often end up a bit wanky. IIRC you stripped it almost to shell to paint, but even if not - great job on the panels!
The finish and color match to the side vinyl really nice.
Dan, what mirrors are you using? I like those.
Dan, thanks for the positive comments, the mirrors are some old baby turbo Vitalonis I have had laying around for like 15 years or more. I took them off of the delphi Green '73 2.0L I had back in the mid 90s. I decided they looked pretty good with the top the way I was planning on doing it and the big bumpers....
Just gives the car a slightly different look. I can always go back to the stockers whenever I want.
The Vitalonis mount to the stock mirror locations with slightly longer bolts and a bit of modification to the base where the arm articulates. In stock form the mirror will not lay parallel with the ground, so a bit if judicious filing allows the head of the mirror to be parallel. Just have to take it apart and it is pretty obvious how to make it work and look correct.
I didn't take any pics when I was modding the base since I wasn't sure I would want to use them anyway.
Those mirrors integrate with the big bumpers very well. Looks good.
Dan still looking for a before and after on those brake light shots I am trying something a little different with chrome paint. If it works great if not only out 5 bucks
I will try to take a couple tonight...
I had thought about the chrome paint, just didn't wan to go thru all the R&R or tons of masking off the entire rear of the car to paint the tail light housings
before and after
pictures really don't do it justice...the after is much brighter now.

Dan it looks awesome as usual Once the warm front moves in around April I will get to priming and painting mine.
that is one thing about living in California most of the time.
Last week I was able to repaint my twin pipe muffler since we had a week of 70*+ weather.
Also reglued the head liner in my newly repainted top a couple of days ago and the 3M cement set up in a matter of minutes
It would kill me to have to wait to do certain things because of the ambient temps and humidity in the air for weeks at a time
been thinking of possibly doing a red PORSCHE side stripe, so I decided to try a little pin striping just to see if the color would go with the rest of the car....
It helps to tie in the red on the calipers.
Anyway, it is just tape and I can always remove it.
Something else I did a few weeks back was to dig out and modify some old splash guards I had from my Boxster. Cut them down and modified them so the fit the contours of the car. Since I AX the car all the time and the venue we use tends to have lots of sand and fine gravel, I decided to try and protect the rocker panel and rear valence paint just a bit. You can see them in these pics. Fairly unobtrusive and should help the paint chips considerably.

I also installed the top of the glass to targa top and the rear targa top seals I got from Mikey914 yesterday. They fit great, although those top to side glass are a bear to get in the track. Again, more great products from 914Rubber.com.
My targa top refurbishment is over for now. Later I may put a 1/4" of foam padding and then some nice black vinyl in the head liner instead of the felt...but that will be much later when I redo my door panels in RS style like I did on my last car with real RS America door pulls. Wish I could find some seats like my old ones...at least for the price I paid
Attached image(s)
Next up for install will be a Rennshifter....
Just got one here in the classifieds and it should be here next week sometime.
I will take some pics during the install since all the threads I could find had no pics during the process.
Dan, I really am digging your car. Very nice!
that car is disgustingly nice...good work Dan
so I will be getting some new door panels from CraigL soon....
I guess these were a couple of Morph panels he had that he did not use.
anyway, I won't have to be doing any of my own upholstery on these
And I sure won't have to be worrying about warpage or water damage on these bad boys.
Now to decide on full stock door hardware and such or just keep them clean with a simple door pull, door handle and window crank...
Anyone make or know a source for a simple nylon strap style door pull?
Attached image(s)
Attached image(s)
another nice day in Norcal
Attached image(s)
new door panels installed.
Decided to just go with the stock hardware instead of RS style...Oh well.
these have fiberglass boards
thanks to CraigL for getting these to me so quickly
Attached image(s)
I like the red stripes. How about trying some out here:
Attached image(s)
I have been thinking about giving that a whirl...it would take me about 5 minutes per side.
just started with the stripes in the center position like the Negative stripes.
Door panels turned out nice!
Rennshifter is in transit...should be here by Monday.
After I get that installed I am going to start searching for a decent (cheap) SC/Carrera center console. I will be modifying it to replace the stock 914 console I removed. With the large hole in the SC console it should fit perfectly with the Rennshifter and an SC shifter boot. Then I will fab up a panel to fit in the storage bin area of the console for my Temp, Voltmeter, and clock.
Attached image(s)
OK, Rennshifter received this afternoon around 5pm....
Already installed adjusted and working fine. May need to make some fine adjustments, but able to get all gears upshifting and downshifting, reverse locked out automatically. Adjustment was a bit of an exercise in geometry and physics...but all good.
Pics tomorrow...
Now need to find the 911 console and 915 shifter boot.
I will give my assessment in a few days..
some slight adjustments to the shifter today....needed to reposition the shifter on the shift rod...needed a bit more engagement for 3rd and 5th. Then reset the shift stops...
much better now.
Now I just need to get used to the fact that the gear is really there
I like the 911 console idea. Be cool to see how that looks and fits in a 914.
yes, so far it seems to have helped the engagement of first gear...I think the stock shifter just needed to be slightly adjusted on the shift rod and it would have been better.
From what I could see, the stock shifter had never been off the car before and I think with normal wear, it just would have needed a bit of adjustment to help the first gear issue. All the shifter linkage bushings had been replaced, so this was the only adjustment left to be attended to.
Now first goes in easily, and for second you just basically push the shifter straight up and it goes right into second without nicking reverse...
I have driven several 914s with Rennshifters and Welt short shifters (including my 914-6), so I knew basically what to expect....
takes a bit of getting used to but overall it is definitely an improvement.
shifter installed along with brand new 915 shifter boot.
I will install the stock repro knob I have as soon as I am sure everything is adjusted as I like.
Not sure if I like the large round polished billet knob...
Attached image(s)
How much was the boot if I may ask?
good friend of mine who owns a Porsche shop ordered it for me....got it the same afternoon with his usual parts shipment.
$17
also decided I didn't care for the big billet knob, so I went ahead and installed my repop shift knob...looks much better IMHO
Instructing tomorrow at an AX school in the Infineon Paddock.
About 40-50 students I believe.
Instructors will get a chance to drive as well, so I can shake off some cobwebs and make sure the car is all ready for the season...
Our AX season begins on March 19. I have designed the AX course for our first event.
Should be a good course for midengined cars.
Time for me to begin my assault on PAX for the season
Great school yesterday.
We had an eclectic collection of cars...
from front wheel drive toyotas, Mazdas, Acuras to
MGs with 215 Buick V8 conversions.
We also had the Battleship. THis car started life as a short wheelbase 912. It now had huge Carbon fiber fender flares running 315 rear V710s and 275s up front. CF roof, CF doors, CF front and rear deck lids...around 2100# with fuel.
G50 6speed tranny, and here is the biggy.................................
GT3 Cup motor Over 450HP on tap, instantly. and yes, water cooled
Rode in it a few times and then got to drive it.
On/off racing clutch and a hair trigger for a throttle (about one inch of travel )
What an adrenalin rush.
Oh yea, and my car ran flawlessly....~100 mile drive each way without a stumble. And ran the course without issue. Ready for the upcoming season
Attached image(s)
Alrighty....
"School" is over and it is time to get out there and kill some cones.
Saturday is our first AX of the 2011 season.
Weather forecast is for rain off and on all day...so street tires may do pretty well overall.
Still going for PAX and so far it appears that two major competitors from last season are out...at least for now...one guy sold his very trick BoxsterS (having hip surgery I believe) and the other hasn't signed up for the event.
And the best part is that I designed the course....lots of high speed transitions...you know, the ones that 911 drivers hate
If it is wet out, the 911s are going to have a tough time of it...
here is the quick sketch....
start and then thru the small loop....then a series of offset gates, one chicane, more off set gates, big high speed decreasing radius loop at the far end, and then a looooong slalom with increasing spacing and then decreasing spacing....
~4,000' in length.
Attached thumbnail(s)
well, I guess the car is running pretty well.
Saturday's AX was in the wet and rain all day. Our run group got the early wet surface, it started to dry out for the second group, and then just before our second runs it started pouring....standing water everywhere...
A well set up stock 914 does pretty well in the rain...
I finished in the top 1/3 overall and won my class and then won PAX overall.
PAX=performance AX index. it is a way to compare cars/drivers from different classes.
Pretty evident that the rain was an equalizer...but I will bask in my results until our next event.
Fastest time by a GT3 running Hoosier Rains was a 55 and change. The GT3 is professionally set up for SCCA National competition with two very good drivers. My best time in the pouring rain, with standing water in several places was a 60.6 on Full tread Dunny Dirreza Star Specs...
Thanks Dave.
for my main reason of getting it, which was to ensure a good solid 2-3 upshift downshift in the heat of battle it works very well.
I am getting used to it and the more I use it the more I like it.
It is a totally different feel from a stock shifter or even a stock shifter with a short shift conversion.
it flows into 2nd from first very nicely and you have to physically push it over to go into 4th....that is part of the design...
For what it is and compared to a stock shifter it is nice. I am glad I was able to find it for a slightly lower price.
Update on the Rennshifter:
The more I use it the more I like it. As it breaks in and I become more accustomed to it, it becomes more intuitive.
I really like the 1-2 shift.
Next AX is 4/23. Car and driver are ready to go....hopefully in the dry this time
I had no other excuses about the shifting. The tranny was rebuilt in 2010 and all new bushings for shifter mechanism, front to rear!
So this was the last piece of the puzzle.
Only thing I may do is to install some 911 sport mounts for the tranny, then call it done.
Shifter gets better every day!
Mostly mechanical break in, but I am sure some getting used to it is helping
Car is now offered for sale in the classifieds here
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=126309&pid=1478217&st=0&#entry1478217
I build them drive them for awhile, and then move on to another project. May be moving to a 2003 or 2004 BoxsterS and slowly install full Spec Boxster suspension....
I have helped build several Spec Boxes over the last few years and have wanted to take the suspension and put it in a car with more HP.
I have done many laps in Spec Boxsters, doing suspension development testing. So I have a few ideas I would like to try.
Casper the white '75 is sold and going to central California!
Wow! Somebody got a great car. What's next on the menu?
Still pondering.
If I wanted to Go back to the track big time, I would be looking at Elliott's car...
But more likely a BoxsterS or an early 996, then the mods will begin
I bet the new owner will be very happy.
How about building a Boxster S with the Cayman top. Lighter than the Cayman R for 1/3rd of the price? White of course.
I bet that would be a fun track car.
