914World.com _ 914World Garage _ just another "my final build" thread

Posted by: BigD9146gt Mar 19 2010, 09:35 AM

Well, 8+ years ago I started in on this project. I built an 8pt moly cage, took autobody classes at the local JC, did all the body work including put the fiberglass flares on and painted it. Took a wrecked '71 911 dash, steering column, wiring harness and fuse box and put it in as well as cutting back all corroded wires and replaced with clean wires from a donor harness. New electrical fittings from Würth, new thick heat shrink, and even drafted a color wiring diagram for future reference just as the factory did it. More pictures and explanations to fallow, or just ask me WTF were you thinking when you did "that", and I'll do my best to rationalize it.

Cheers, D.

It's amazing how long one can be out at sea on a 914 project....

Ya, whats up with that? i measured and had put my friends rims on and they did not look that far in... same offsets and everything! I don't get where I went wrong, oh well.

Been working on the motor. It started life as a '73E engine, 3R/4R case. I machined it for the oil bypass mod, welded one cracked head stud and machined the cylinder true and decked them.
-Heads: bored 36mm Int/Exh, ported, polished on the exhaust. Twin plugged, new guilds, valves, Eibach springs, and titanium upper retainers.
-Crank: inspected, micro-polished, center oil main drilled for connecting rod 2&5
-Cylinders are Mahle 92mm RSR pistons and cylinders, purchased in the mid 70's.
-Cams: Dougherty DC60's
-MFI pump rebuilt by Gus, Pacific FI to 2.7RS spec. I rebuilt the mfi stacks, bored them to 36mm on the throttle body, and 40mm on the plastic runners. Machined new aluminum linkages for butterflys.
-Carrera chain tensioners, Supertec head studs, see through RSR fan shroud, Patrick twin plug rotor, MSDS multiple spark.

Thats all I can think off at the moment. heres a pic.

Could it be that fiberglass flares stick out further than steel since they are bonded on the fender instead of replacing the sheet metal. I also read that fiberglass fenders allow wider wheels. Awesome motor!

New update: RSR engine shroud from Roger Sheridan at Ulitmate914.com. He does gorgeous work! Love the vintage look way too much!

Gint, I actually got it for a steal, a buddy of mine purchased a ton of 914 glass parts from Sheridan and decided he didn't want to build the motor. I think regularly they sell around $600.

I finally got my homemade mandrel bender up and working again! Made a mandrel for the .0625 wall aluminum and had a go... Factory style oil coolers anyone?

I like the clear/amber shroud. I didn't realize Sheridan was making them -- heard about some other suppliers' versions that apparently need a lot of trimming and fitting.

My red "S" shroud is a little scruffy but I decided to leave it alone for now...

Well, I made the spacers yesterday, and remembered why the offsets where sooo far in. I made these 3pc Fuchs/BBS to the same spec as early 911's (for resale options). Anywho, 50mm added to the front, and 19mm rear.

Tom T, thanks again for the deal on the bumper top, it looks great!

Tranny pump and cooler. I used an early 911 drain plug with external hex, drilled/tapped pipe thread for AN fittings, and used Cohline swage plumbing, drilled/tapped into the case/intermediate plate. Early 911 input shaft bearings had an oiling groove with 3 holes, the two other fittings dump oil above 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th. I made a screen/protective plate for the oil cooler, its just a small mocal with -6AN.

Really nice, I'm guessing guards red?

How do I post this as a video that you can see on this post as its own small screen?

http://s97.photobucket.com/albums/l237/bigd9146/?action=view&current=incar.mp4

Anyways, there are a few more things to add and sort out on this little project. I've got another MSD-6AL to run the second coil (right now both coils are running off one unit). Installing the PMO fuel pressure regulator as a precaution for the MFI pump along with my own LM-2 for tuning. Need to add some anti-squeek backing pads for the front calipers (anything under 30mph braking and your ears are bleeding). Then its on to a front mounted oil cooler setup to make sure she stays cool. Hope you enjoy the video, mostly the noise... the hand held camera doesn't do it justice, but believe me, sound is sooooooooo nice!

And yes charliew, Guards Red.
