914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Another World Member goes to the dark side.

Posted by: Rico Suave Mar 22 2010, 10:56 AM

So....a lot of world mebers own tail draggers aas drivers and not "donor vehicles"....I have one, the oft maligned bastard cabriolet that has an 83 SC frame, 72 body panels and a 3.6 stuffed into the rear.

Today I talked to Rich in Eugene. He's picking up a 911 for CHEAP. Rich also goes by "Shade Tree" and is a good friend. He'll post pics.

Let's get a list of the wankers who secretly own the "other pinky lifting Porsche".....wasser pumpers doan count.....

BTW, I DO have a 914/6....I hope it will be at WCR.

I still have all the files for the graphics somewhere (Flexi-cut program)

That color is beautiful, I like that car and I am not really a 911 fan.

Posted by: gandalf_025 Mar 22 2010, 01:21 PM

Not sure if this counts.. But this red 1970 Targa came in to a shop while I was working on my 6 .. must have been around 1976 My Wife wanted it bad enough to sell her Sunbeam Tiger for it

Attached Image

That was her DD for some time.. A few years ago I convinced her she would like this instead of a Cabriolet

Attached Image

That didn't last long.. Then my mechanic found this for her for 9000.00 I keep telling her to make sure it gets hit in the nose when the time comes. I want the 3.2 for something else..

I still have the 6 though..

I confess I have owned tail draggers for a loooong time ........ but my first two 'porsches' were 914s smile.gif!! I had a 1971 1.7 then a 1974 creamsicle .................. then on to a convertible 911SC with steel slant kit, then a 1984 Carrera, then a 1985 930 euro model ............... then my last tail dragger that I sold about 5 years ago was this 1997 993TT with upgraded GT2 turbos, 996TT wheels and a little more than stock boost wink.gif ............ as of 5 years ago I am done with tail draggers! ................ my current 'porsche' is a 1973 1.7 that I will be turning into a GT replica as time allows ......... as well as another mid-engined convertible of 'italian' origins, that takes most of my time ........ smile.gif

here is a pic my last tail dragger

Mid engined 993 body 911 sounds interesting ........... will the engine be modded?

Posted by: 1968Cayman Mar 22 2010, 05:17 PM

It's actually a 1968 shell with 993 quarters- keeping most of the longhood look. It'll be built for the possible addition of a turbo, but not much else. I'm only looking for ~350 horses.

Posted by: Rico Suave Mar 22 2010, 05:20 PM

Not like the back seats in a tail dragger were worth a damn anyways....you gonna make a rear trunk to really screw with people?

Posted by: john grier Mar 22 2010, 07:00 PM

Well I posted it in my blog last year.
We did buy a 80scTarga.
Just could not resist
But we also have several 914's that are running and
several rollers and parts car 914's.
914's are more fun, but the 911 is simpley different.
Everyone needs at least one.

Well, the deal fell through but has opened up another possibility. I didn't take pics of it yet but it needs work. Mostly cosmetic. I think it's a 68 or 69. Stockish 2.0 full cage, slicks. It comes with all parts needed to return it to stock as well. Right now it's pretty well stripped. But no rust and it's mechanically sound.......I think. I'm not finished bartering yet.

And for completeness, I have a '71 (formerly E) Targa that's on its (slow) progression to 2,8 RSR-esque-land.

I would say less power than my 914, but I'm not sure that's the case.

I've always wanted a 911 too, but don't think I'll ever have the money to afford a 914, 356 AND 911...so I'm working on convincing my brother to get one, haha.

By '58 they were already starting to get heavy.
No issues with brakes on my '53 although I can promise the 1500N had way less power than any 914. They're for cruising, not stoplight Grands Prix. Although a Pre-A on 2.75x16 tires can get exciting in its own way ...

Maybe I am odd. I find nothing really attractive other than the 914 and occasionally the odd silver 356 coupe looks neat, but I could never see myself owning, driving a 911 or 356.

Posted by: naro914 Mar 24 2010, 03:11 PM

when I was a kid, my Uncle had a 914 and a '70 911. I HATED the 914, thought it was the ugliest thing ever built. I really wanted the 911.
He eventually sold both, and has bought various 911 itterations since (993, 996, turbo, etc).

Fast forward, our first Porsche was a stock '74 2.0 914 (what is now Papa Smurf). Second was a 944 Cab, which we sold to eventually buy the 993 cab.

Since then, we've owned 7 914's (still have Huey and Papa). And, truth be told, I am still not a huge fan of stock, skinny tired, high riding 914's. Sure, I appreciate them much more, but give me hp, lighten it up, better suspension, etc....THAT's what I love about 914's, they have so much potential, and I can do most of it myself. Simple...I like simple...

(though you would never know it since I've been working on these damn cars for 18 years now and they're STILL not done... smile.gif )

Posted by: rfuerst911sc Mar 24 2010, 06:45 PM

I've owned a 1974 911S Targa, 1987 944S and currently own a 1983 911SC. I love my SC and could care less what anyone thinks. biggrin.gif I buy what I like and that's it. Once I get my GT clone on the road I can start making comparisons. They are all good in their own ways.

A couple years later I bought the 74 914 which I autocross and time trial, and last year I bought a 03 996. I left out the 944 and 924S. I could hang out with the 911 or 944 crowd, but I like the 914 community because they're special aktion035.gif . So far I've haven't sold any of the Porsches.

My blue long hood started out brown... I may bitch about why the PO did this or that, but his taste in color was one of the things that sold me on the car in the first place.
