Are your parts going to have high and low areas like the factory units?

Here is another wooden one that I cut out, testing the multi layers gcode. The black one is the loaner for reference.

My new metal end-mill bits should be here soon to where I can cut some out of aluminum.

I'm hoping to have them ready to ship on April 4th.

The price includes shipping in the lower 48 states.

payment can be made anytime between now and shipping day.

I have enough aluminum to do a run of 10.

Great question!

Right now they are just flat pieces of metal that would need adhesive tape. (now included)

I can look into using pins if someone wants them.

Posted by: McMark Mar 26 2010, 10:20 AM

Just use emblem tape, like EVERY modern car. Forget the pins. They're too much work.

Do you already have holes in the back of your car? If so, how far apart are they?

I'm looking into options for pins for you; it looks like I could make shallow holes and then silver solder them or epoxy them into the holes.

Let me see if my x-axis will travel that far. =o) I might have to do it in a couple of stages, but... yeah. I'll give it a shot.

the CNC mill runs off of a different computer than what I do my designing on, and I just got some strips of aluminum that would probably be long enough.

Posted by: RJMII Mar 27 2010, 04:10 PM

I've been playing with the 914-GT script in wood while waiting for the end mill bits for the aluminum.

Here's a pic:

It pushes the limits of my little mill; I'm thinking anything longer will have to be done in a couple of stages.

Very nice!

The previous owner either closed up the holes, or the car never had them. Just place the pins in a manner similar to the original "914" emblem.

As for making the tape nice, we can laser cut it so that it will fit niceley on the back. I like to tay 1.0mm underflush of the emblem all the way around.

$65 for the GT ones, they are taking a bit more work.

and thank you! I'm really looking forward to cutting out of aluminum this week.

Posted by: RJMII Mar 29 2010, 02:54 PM

I'm setting up the mill to cut this one out right now. =o)

I get to start cutting aluminum first thing tomorrow!

The mill is heading out to my dad's shop so I didn't have to build a shrowd to catch the chips flying off of it. It'll be good to have the noise out of the apartment, too.

I'm ahead of schedule for getting these done, and should have some aluminum chips soon enough.

I'm pretty excited about getting to make these; thank you everyone so far for your support and questions and suggestions.

The green lines are the tool path; and the blue ones are the lines that they are following. As you can see here, I still need to pocket out the insides of the 9 and the 6.

Okay! I can do that. =o) I can work on that next, while the 914-6 is running through the wood version to check the tool paths.

Bare aluminum.

Posted by: RJMII Mar 29 2010, 06:06 PM

Here is the 914-6 out of wood.

The cheeto's thumb print is going to buff right out. I also need to add the tail back onto the '4'. and that's why I do them out of wood first.

the second picture is for the 914-GT modifications.

gothspeed, Mark, what do you two think? Should I make a wood one for your twos' approvals?

Great job Jim!

Send mine just raw aluminum as I am rethinking what I want as a finish. I may just polish the snot out of them!
- or plate them
- or powdercoat them
- or anodize them....

Maybe they won't even go on the car! wink.gif

Thanks, Brett! I'm aiming to please. =o)

Here's the first one in rough form. Playing with aluminum is a bit different than wood, that's for sure.

This one won't be going anywhere, it was for the sole purpose of practicing with the aluminum so the ones that leave will be perfect. =o)

More pictures will come as more of them are made.

You ought to try putting the 3M emblem tape on the aluminum stock before you mill it or do you think it would tear it up?

Kevin;

It would tear it up, and it would change the distance between one end of the emblem and the other end by too many .001's of an inch to mill evenly. (I gave that idea some thought as well, and vetoed it myself)

However, applying the 3m tape afterwords and taking a razor blade to it will work wonders.

I need to go back and edit about it not coming with the tape, I realized I can pick it up at cost from NAPA so it would be cheaper for me to do it and more beneficial to you guys that are buying/have bought.

Posted by: rohar Apr 2 2010, 12:19 PM

Have you thought of putting some gorilla tape on the back (to keep it square) and throwing it in a ball mill for a few hours? I'd think it'd smooth out the hard edges and polish it up nicely. I've got one I made out of a coffee can, some skate board bearings and an old mixer that works nice for things like this wink.gif

Posted by: RJMII Apr 2 2010, 01:06 PM

rohar, thanks for the tip! I might try polishing up one of the emblems from the practice runs that I've been using to test feed speeds. My parents have a rock polisher that just might do the trick... Thanks! I'll give it a try. =o)

Posted by: rohar Apr 2 2010, 01:25 PM

I've got a small foundry in the back yard, the issue comes up a lot wink.gif I've thought about using a rock polisher then I saw the price.

Paint can/coffee can with a piece of allthread through it and a pair of 2x4 blocks for the ends and a mixer from the second hand store did the job. I fill it with some sand and old nuts and bolts for medium. Just vary the ratio of nuts and bolts to sand for "aggressiveness". Ball bearings are wonderful if you come across a good deal.

Posted by: smrz914 Apr 2 2010, 04:32 PM

So I ordered the 914-8 emblem, but would like to know if there is enough interest in a 918 emblem. I would probably take one of those too.

Posted by: burton73 Apr 2 2010, 04:36 PM

These will need to be hand finished with silicone carbide paper but first tape it down to a hard surface to work on it. Or taped to a board and put in a vibratory finisher with small media with abrasive media mixed in cast polyester plastic. This works great for this type of work. You do not want to bevel the backside. After you are done with the vibratory polishing you can put the part in acetone to remove the tape. Or cut it or heat it.

The factory parts are sanded after they are cast in white metal. I have looked my 914-6 VW Porsche unit and note the shrink marks from the casting plus I can see the bevels.

Paul; the 914-8 emblems are my starting point. They are helping me to learn the feeds and speeds and the pre-orders helped fund the aluminum, the end mills (I've already broken 3), and to get input.

When I finish this run of 914-8 emblems I'll be putting a bunch of options on my website and in a members vendor thread here. The 918 will be one of them. =o)

So far I've had quite a bit of input and great tips; and I appreciate all of the assistance in the learning process. There's a great group of guys here, that's for sure.

Now to find some silicone carbide paper. =o) I have more than one emblem that I've screwed up that I can try out a polishing technique.

burton73 made a great point about vibratory polishing, so much easier than doing it by hand. If you don't have one, you can put a make shift vibrator can together with, you guessed it, a paint can. Fill it with media, drop your part in it, duck tape a palm sander to the top and hang it from the ceiling by a rope. Plug it in and let it sit for a while wink.gif

I own one of those! I hate the stupid bolt in the middle that holds the lid on, gets in the way of longer pieces. Besides, $50 is a set of pads or over half a set of stainless brake lines. Priorities! smile.gif

Please send me with tape on and if you would send me and extra piece of tape it would be great. If you material is on a roll you can stick it to wax paper. I think I will finish by hand with Silicone Carbide (Wet Dry) sand paper in different grits and a Dremel tool.

so update? Yes! I should be able to get the 914-8 emblems out tomorrow that are not on the polish list.

I'm still trying to figure out the posts for the one that is getting them.

The 914-6 order is waiting for the 2.7 to be drawn up and cut out.

Posted by: RJMII Apr 6 2010, 07:44 PM

I had a busy day today.

I'm working on cleaning these up and getting the rough edges off of them.

It seems as if everyone wants to try a different way of polishing theirs, so I will clean the rough edges and include a foot of 3m emblem adhesive with each one. It will be on wax paper, since it came in a roll.

(any objections; PM me. wink.gif )

I left the adhesive tape off, and included it on a piece of wax paper. I would have applied it and cleaned it up, but again, you all have your own (great!) ideas on how you'd like to try polishing them.
If you ordered one of these and accidentally screw it up, PM me... wink.gif I'll cut the first run orders a heck of a deal on a second one, as a way of saying 'thank you' for being my first customers.

the first run of 914-8 emblems is done. =o)

More pictures, please! I'm very close to shelling out the money for this, just need that extra little bump to put me over the edge...

Here is another wooden one that I cut out, testing the multi layers gcode. The black one is the loaner for reference.

My new metal end-mill bits should be here soon to where I can cut some out of aluminum.

Did you hand code the G-code or 'cheat' and use software smile.gif

Steve, you see the screen shots earlier in the thread? that's bobCAD. that's my 'cheat' right there.

I had to go in and look at my gcode, though. I went over the lines to make sure I wouldn't break anymore bits. sad.gif

If it's a lot of trouble for you, don't spend any more time on it. I can mount it with adhesive instead.

Jeroen, Thank you for posting the pics those look incredible!

Mike, I'm looking forward to milling yours as well! The new 'look' is going to be fun. My mill is set up for cranking out 40 little wheel blanks, and then I'm cutting out a few more emblems. biggrin.gif
