Once again, we are taking the Sacramento Porsche Family Reunion on the road for May... This time, we are going to Original Customs in Sonoma, CA to be wrench wenches on the World famous (at least 914World) limo project. Bring your skills and an appetite for some BBQ. Even if you don't have skills you can learn and be a small rodent with great utility at these events called a 'gopher' LOL!!!
So come one, come all! Let's get this limo going...
Saturday May 1st - 2010 9:14am until our eyes start bleeding!

Just another weekend I can't make it... but I can represent in parts...
Rob & Andy,
If you guys figure out what you need, I can haul them up there. I live close to Rob. Do I need to bring my truck?
BTW, Rob thanks for the dash controls. They work great!
I guess I volunteered myself without thinking... Yep, I'm in! How much wiring do we need? Should I now bring my utility truck?
Yup, we've got two harnesses. We'll cut each wire, find its mate in the other harness, and then connect the two.
Guess I need to order a bunch of splice connectors and heat shrink.
Got the brake line. Just need to cut 6" off and reflare the end.
We'll need a set of OEM rubber brakelines ...
Andy
I'm in too. I have a truck also and can parts haul whatever...
I wish I was in California at this time. Projects such as this one is one of the main reasons I joined the 914 group. These events are a lot of fun and hope available people can go to the project location and help. I have done a couple of these type projects with the 914 group and several with the Alfa group. Lots of fun and you get to know club people.
Have fun and enjoy the build. will follow with great interest. Hope to see the project in June when I will be in the Northern California area for a few days before heading to Kansas and Texas.
Steve Hurt
I give Andy and Mark a lot of credit for stepping up and taking action.. +
You Sacramento guys don't have to worry. I will stop and pick up donuts on the way down.
Let's get this thing running!!!
I'm in.
Sounds fun
I would likely bring my 914 and it's interior projects, plus extra parts. Last time I was there at OC was to help my own project, with limo help on the side. This time, priorities reversed.
McMark, let me know if you have NOT received my box with your tools. Thanks again
Chris, I got it! Thanks!
This will be fun! Now that the bodies are one and the rust is rustored, all we have to do is bolt it together! Hook things up, bleed some brakes, plumb some fuel, put in an engine. Not sure Mark and Andy have an engine yet so don't park your 914 too close! Who else is in???
I'm going to try to make it...
--DD
I don't care what YOU call it and it isn't your business anyway! The guys who OWN it call it a limo. I am going to Original Customs 914World LimoDay to help get this fun little gem roadworthy! See you there?
Attached image(s)
So, Mark and Andy, Me and Brett, Geoff and Mike, Dave and ??? Who else is coming up for the Limo Day at Original Customs? Sound off!
Let's be part of making something out of nothing!
Attached image(s)
Whoa, whoa, whoa... why the pairing up?
What did I sign up for....
Ok, sorry guys... I did not mean to imply any romantic connections. Although, you and Andy do spend a lot of time together...
I think I can make it, I may need a ride, as you know it took me six hours to get home last time. Al. I was dark and I think I missed a couple of turns, ended up in Sausalito?
Ok! So Al will be there and all we have to do is make sure we point him North when it is time to go home See you all soon at the Original Customs 914 Limo Day! I can almost taste the BBQ!
We are getting quite a group together for the Original Customs 914 Limo Day... Will you be there? Put it on your calendar and see if it fits! We need to get this thing mobile for the trip to Tahoe...
So if Mark and Andy keep cranking away on weekends, we should just be doing final assembly at the 914World Limo Day at Original Customs. We could use your help! Talent runs deep at 914World. We just need you to come out and help.
Just under 3 weeks until the 914World Limo Day at Original Customs! Will we see you there?
Attached image(s)
Any leads on an engine yet??
Maybe McMark can gather parts and we can try to put one together at the BBQ?
I can bring 90% of a tailshift transaxle to donate, parts in a box
Does McMark have a paint booth yet? Maybe we could get that together and shoot doors, lids and bits?
Or, I will eat and drink and help w whatevers
What about putting a automatic in that bad boy.
Mark does not have a paint booth, unless you count the open sky outside his shop.
Just two and a half weeks till the 914World Limo Day at Original Customs. Get those parts donations in and come on down if you can!
How about a Porsche V8 from a Cayane with the Audi transaxle?
Come on down and see just how creative (read bizarre) the minds of Andy and Mark really are! Two 914's welded together into a limo... Hmmm. Can this work? Let's find out! May 1st - Original Customs in Sonoma.
How about an Alien powerplant?
We already know it can be done.... and Ricola has a trans already.
I loved my 928 so much, that's actually really tempting.
928 power plant = BAD ASS! Great idea.
Two weeks left! Don't miss out on good food, good friends, and a good time being part of the 914World Limo Day build! See you there!!!
Just think! If we had your help at 914World Limo Day Build at Original Customs in Sonoma Eric Shea might not have to beg for rides from Reno to get to WCR2010 Teeners at Tahoe! A badass 914 Limo could pick him up at the airport with a little cardboard sign that says "That Guy"
Come on down and help out! Let's get this thing going!
Oh wait! Here is Eric's limo driver now!!!
Attached image(s)
I saw it yesterday. It will need your creative input. Come down and help solve the one big design problem with your input... Plus button up a couple systems like brakes - fuel - etc... See you there for the 914World Limo Day!
Less than two weeks to go! Andy was ripping out the rust and Mark was welding in the new panels yesterday. This thing is looooking gooood! Come on down to the 914World Limo Day at Original Customs in Sonoma!
Remember to remember to show up for 914World Limo Day at Original Customs in Sonoma. We need your help to get some assembly done. BBQ will be hot and good times will be had!
Here comes 914World Limo Day... Will you help a brother out?
Only ten days to the 914World Limo Day at Original Customs in Sonoma. Let's get some hands on that Limo and push it closer to operational... How can you help?
Plus+ There will be a BBQ and you can eat if you can get a burger away from this guy!

One of the things we hope to accomplish is to interview for drivers. So far this is the only resume that has showed up.... Hmmm...

Just a week and a day! Who else is in for the 914World Limo Day build? Let's get this thing going!
914World Limo Day! One week from now! See you there!!!

I know! The one part no one has offered so far... Bring some!

What? What! A 914 Limo? No way! Yes - Way!!! Come down and help out. Saturday May 1st at Original Customs in Sonoma! 914World Limo Day!!!
See what McMark turns into when he is around his MAC!

Ready to get your Limo on? 914World.Com Limo Day at Original Customs in Sonoma California is just three days and a wake up away! Bring a wrench and build a Limo! See you there...
Oh, BTW - Andy and Mark may have found an engine for it!!!

914World Limo Day at Original Customs! Saturday May 1st 9:14am till the cows come home... Be there. Find out what evil lurks in the minds of Mark and Andy. Learn and burn from the welding sparks Mark lets fly. Be a part of the sickest plot in 914 history!
Just two days and a wake-up till 914World Limo Day at Original Customs in Sonoma! Make your plans to be there...
Attached image(s)
I am still planning on being there. I will bring my 914, maybe some parts to donate, beverages, and extra food if needed. Is the BBQ all set?
I think it needs to be postponed until next weekend!!
BBQ is here and ready to cook!
I've made my arrangements, I'll be heading up for the weekend!
--DD
I'm hoping to come by for a bit on Saturday.
I have two large bins of parts that I am trying to get rid of. I wonder if anyone is interested in type IV engine or D-jet parts? Trying to clean out the garage.
I also have an unfinished Targa top and some other misc stuff that I'll probably throw in the trunk.
Any one from sacrament with a spare seat looking fora passenger/designated driver? PM me. I finally cleared the calendar for saturday, and i need to go and talk to McMark about my car and visit her there!
I would have liked to be there since remains of my wrecked teener are half of this abomination, but I am flying up to Bend Oregon in the morning and picking this up to console myself from the atrocities you are committing.

Cool, you have my number! Thanks Rob
Here's a link to Google Maps, zoomed in on the parking lot with the shop:

Almost bed time, gotta get up early to get to the shop tomorrow!!

We are all set at this end. Mark (Gopack) will meet me at the Donut shop and we will take my car down. This will give me an hour and a few minutes to try and talk sense into his football team choice...
Where is everyone? I've been here for 30 minutes already.
if i left now i could be there in 72 hrs - if no cops, 48 : ))
have fun!

NO!
I'm on my way... Oh and I showered.
Where are the live action shots of the build?
Had a lot of fun out there today. I hope Rob posts some pics.
Interesting... Most of my shots didn't turn out. Here is one from the tail end of the beast...
Mike Bellis was very productive splicing the leading harness into the trailing harness. Not just crimped wire either, each wire was soldered to its mate in the rear harness. Mike knows his stuff. Plus his V8 914 sounds killer as hell!
Dave Darling changed out the front struts as well as some other stuff. I removed calipers all the way around and removed the old front fiberglass spoiler and its associated oil cooler. as well as the oil cooler lines into the wheel well. Geoff Straw did some killer rust repair. I believe the brake line was extended from the front body to the rear by McMark. Chris Pincitich was there. He was doing something but I didn't keep track of him. Jeff Keyser was there as well and though I know both of these guys were pitching in I am sorry to say I didn't know what they were doing. Andy was into everything. Though rust repair seemed to be a focus.
Amoy says me and Mark are no longer allowed to plan BBQ's since we didn't have any food or drink and had to send her and Gopack Mark to the store or we would all have gone hungry. Al and Sue Weidman came down too. I saw Al pitching in while Sue entertained their dog with a tennis ball for hours. Mike and his wife from Windsor came by in their slope nose 2.0 and say what you want about slope nose 914's, this was a well executed car in very nice condition. Hopefully they will bring it up to Tahoe in a couple weeks here.
If I am forgetting anyone, my apologies. I think a lot of work got done which is what the goal was and it was great to see the gang!

We got a ton of work done and everyone was extremely helpful. Thanks everyone for chipping in. We got 5-6 days worth of work done in a few hours.
From what I can remember we:
1. connected the two wiring harnesses (Thanks MikeB for the labor and RobW for the extra harness)
2. Swapped the early struts that were on the car for a set of late struts (Thanks DaveD for the labor and RobW for the struts)
3. Pulled off all four calipers for rebuilding (Thanks DaveD on the front and ChrisP and RobS at the back)
4. Removed the thread in studs in the rear (Thanks ChrisP)
5. Cut out the nasty old battery tray (Thanks ChrisP)
6. Removed the ugly front valence and damn leaky oil cooler (Thanks RobS)
7. Patched a bunch more holes in the floor (Thanks GeoffS and AndyS)
8. Installed the brake line extension (I did that!)
9. Swapped the funky steering column for an appropriate 914 column (Thanks DaveD and AndyS)
10. Prepared the throttle cable tube and clutch cable tube for their future extension (Thanks ChrisP)
11. Repaired the torn up center tunnel on the rear car (I did this too!)
12. Pulled the new extralong wiring harness back out so we can weld and paint (Thanks JeffK)
13. Removed the wiper arms (Thanks Mark)
Thanks also to gopack (Mark) for taking a ton of pictures with DaveD's camera.
Thanks to Amoy and JeffK for cooking. Thanks to Amoy and Mark for shopping for the food.
I think that was everything I saw... WHEW! You guys are SOOOO awesome.
For those of you who think McMark's life must suck having to work on ratty rusty 914's every day, here is a little of the scenery that Mark has to deal with on his way to work... By the way, if anyone needs an uncracked but scored windshield I will have one available soon... So no comments about the pic through the window

The sky was so blue today... I love it here.
Attached thumbnail(s)
I raced a Mitsubishi Evo on the way home... Smoked him... Only broke 100mph a couple of times. His 300hp turbo could not compete with my V8 torque!
I almost forgot... Thanks to Pete Stout and his friend who stopped by in a Panamera to drop off back issues to be given away at WCR2010 Teeners at Tahoe. I hated to see poor Pete have to hang his head for having to drive that 4 door monster but the 400 horses under the hood caused a smile or two I bet. Interesting technology in that car. Very light for what it is and more important - 'when' it is.
I saw a few people using my camera, so hopefully there are some good shots on it. I don't have the right cable or a card reader with me, so I'll have to wait until I get home tomorrow to get the pics from the camera. I'll shrink them to size and post them after that.
It was good to see everyone, even MightyOhm who insisted on burning all of the food rather than letting hungry people grab it. (I think he muttered something about "salmonella and e. coli"...)
We got a pretty decent amount done, but the bodywork is the real bottle neck. There were only a couple of people there (Geoff and McMark, any others?) who can do the welding and such, and there is a pretty decent amount of it that needs to be done. Also, more parts are needed for some of the tasks. But it is getting done!!
I am quite tired now. My allergies kept me up for a long time last night before the drugs kicked in, so I was only running on 4-5 hours of sleep. Thankfully, I only had to make it back to my friends' place in San Rafael, rather than all the way back down to the South Bay.
--DD
I think I may settle in that area after residency I wish I could have been there to help out. Lots of fun with lots of my friends.
Good times with some great folks. Below are some pics.
Andy measuring/cutting patch panels:
Amoy enjoying the fun:
Dave swapping out the front struts:
Can't wait to see y'all in Tahoe in two weeks!
Geoff
Fun times! McMark's iTunes looks a lot like mine
McMark - you are welcome, and THANK YOU for the assistance with my little project. With this weather I am not sure when the targa will go back on, but when it does, it will be better than ever with the new rear sea and fixed latch.
As always, I learned a lot from the parts trivia experts, body work gurus, and Mike's soldiering wiring skills.
Great to see/meet everyone! It is always nice to visit the 914 support groups, knowing I am not alone in my pseudo addiction to rust, rubber, metal, and grease. I am proud to have used a plasma cutter, sawzall, cutting wheel, drill, sledge, and lots of fun tools I don't have at home. Who know there was a 4 ended ratcheting socket wrench?? AMAZING, I want one. First to open a beer, last to leave! I just wish that traffic out of Sonoma was faster. The final run through Lucas Valley Rd home was awesome, fun drive carving the canyons.
The "work party" is the ONLY way to go on this project. Plan some more dates, and if they do not conflict with PCA AX races, I am there
Looks like a good time was had by all in attendance. Keep up the good work!
Is there a parts needed list posted somewhere?
I had a great time hanging out with a bunch of great 914 guys. getting to meet you all was great fun. makes me want to get my car back on the road as soon as funds allow, and McMark fixes the big ouchie on the front! I wasn't much help, but i got to drink beer, talk to interesting people i had only read posts from, and enjoy a beautiful califirnia spring day!
looking forward to being more helpful at a later date!
Me cutting patch panels ...
Amoy welding ...
McMark and i having a fun time in the Limo ...
I'm glad you finally got Amoy to weld! She had been talking about welding on the car for much of the time I was there, so I'm happy se got the opportunity.
Gopack, don't forget that you also took photos and helped go get lunch!
Some of the pics taken with my camera:

And that's about when I had to get. It was a fun day, and we got a pretty decent amount done!
--DD
Nice work guys! I wish I were there...
Cool!
And after looking at all these pictures......I keep wondering what the loooooooong rocker cover will look like!
Hah! Jeff K dropped off a donation box with parts and a few new hats, and let me have one.
Yes "I got cones"
Nice pics Mark/Dave.
I wish my personal 914 project list could be tackled as quick as the Limo crew took care of business Saturday.
I still think you need to talk Rick Ollah out of the spare alien drivetrain for the limo.
It would be all Porsche...
Now that 914World Limo Day has past - can another 914World Limo Day be far behind? Who knows, but if you have parts to donate, speak up... This project could use some doors for sure!!!
