914World.com _ 914World Garage _ MIKEZ - Change Your Avatar

Posted by: garyh Apr 2 2004, 03:44 PM

Some of us work for a living. At real offices.

And unlike government workers, we can be fired.

Janet Jackson got in trouble for less.

Posted by: SirAndy Apr 2 2004, 03:47 PM

or, you could turn off avatars in your preferences wink.gif

menu on top of each page, click on "My Controls", then "Options/Board Settings".

then set:
"Do you wish to view members avatars when reading threads?" to "NO" and save changes ...

once i explain they are from Mikey, she understands since meeting him a few years ago...........

Posted by: StratPlayer Apr 2 2004, 04:14 PM

Mike I guess you have a hellva reputation....LOL

Posted by: McMark Apr 2 2004, 06:44 PM

This will be one of those topics that goes on forever. I like the idea of making an "at work" account with the avatars off and an "at home" account with the avatars on. Seems like a great solution.

What I want is an icon that we can see in the thread overview/list that is reserved for topics that contain "sensitive materials".

Posted by: 415PB Apr 2 2004, 06:55 PM

I think Mike's avatars are funny as hell. I just have to keep explaining them tactfully to my kid laugh.gif

Posted by: Mueller Apr 2 2004, 07:06 PM

I like that idea of 2 accounts Burgermeister !!!!!

Can we also have another forum for really OT????

I think lots of people wouldn't mind posting interested OT posts, but feel bad for "clutering" up the Technical forum.

That is why I tend to delete some of my topics that I started if asking an OT question.

Posted by: McMark Apr 2 2004, 07:07 PM

I modified this one. Now to research how to add it to the Post Icons section.

I don't like the illicit avatars either. I have a daughter who peeks over my shoulder, and a wife too. I can usually avoid naughty threads by title/warning so that's ok. I don't want to turn off avatars becuase they help me identify and recognize people.

Ben, I'm of the opinion that people have to accept how it is and choose their path. People might post a naughty avatar. If someone is troubled by this they have clear options.

1. Turn off all avatars and accept that you won't see them for anyone.
2. Leave avatars on and accept that other people might see them.
3. Ask the person to change their avatar, but accept that the naughty avatar might remain.

The 914club makes a very pronounced effort to keep a hands-off approach to administration. Problems here on the board are solved in threads similar to this one where people express their opinions.

Its always just a few that routinely attempt to push the envelope of acceptability. A few that make it uncomfortable for the majority.

We understand and appreciate the 'equality' and 'free-speech' approach of the admins, but what it does is put the John-Q.-Public-regular-reader on the defensive. No rules = Anarchy and that is not right. Some of us forget that women, wives daughters and kids do see this website and find occasional portions of it offensive. Lets not be immature and selfish, think about how others see this site.

The 914Club should not be a place for locker room obscenities, this site is about 914s. The vulgarities take away a lot from the value of what is exchanged here, and tarnishes our image to others who visit here, many do not return. I know for a fact that the 914 community has lost some great 914 owners in the past because of this very issue. Remember FI guru Jim Thorusen? Surely there are others.

If common courtesy and consideration of others were used by those that routinely post explicit material, illicit images and use filthy language, it would go a long way to making this a much better website. It would take this website to the highest levels and not limit us only to those that could only 'tolerate' it. I have been tempted to unplug from this site because of this continual filth many times.

Would you be proud if your wife/mother/grandmother/daughter were to visit here? How about your boss or co-workers? On occasions, I would not. Lets make this a better place to hang out. Limited intervention by admins is fine, as long as reasonable courtesy is practiced.

so... you folks are at work on the site, someone you work with may find mike's avatar not pc, that person might go to human resources and you might get fired. you folks have a real simple solution to your problem. air six, no offence but your household matters have no place in my computer. i think that woman is beautiful.

kevin

Posted by: trekkor Apr 2 2004, 09:58 PM

It should be PRETTY SIMPLE to figure this one out.

People are here for the 914's. Period. I know I am.

If you want something else , go somewhere else.

Why not keep the images and posts related to 914's?

Your other interests can be shared privately, not publicly. ( With the rest of us, against our will. )

And... Obscene words are just lazy English.
Express yourself thoughtfully and with respect for the feelings of others.

MikeZ is a character and adds alot to this BBS. Sometimes I do get bored with seeing tits and ass all the time from all the avatars. Its here and all over my email too. I don't mind naked pics of women but here I prefer 914 stuff. If I want to see naked a woman I just ask Monique to take her clothes off.
I don't think that obscenities are lazy english, I only use them for extra emphasis cuz you can't hear my voice and I hate it when people use caps.

Hmmm, thoughtfully...most times I just type whatever comes to mind and think about it afterwards.

What if the FCC sees this site. Will they think its a porno site because of the nudity?

this board IS about 914s. not boobs or zoises buttcrack.

and yes, right now i'm using filthy language. i can also communicate without fairly well and most times i do.

are we driving people away by allowing bouncing boobs in someones avatar? maybe.
but 98.35% of the content here is 914 related and if the rest of "noise" is putting you off, you better don't leave the house or turn on the TV cause you'll end up shooting yourself with that gun you shouldn't have had in the first place.

actually, it may surprise you, but i do. otherwise we would not have this discussion right now. wink.gif

and i say it again 99% of the posts here ARE 914 related.

we (the admins) decided in the very beginning that we neither want to nor have the time to police this BBS except for the extremely rare occasion that something really gets out of hand.

we have over 1700 members now and you can imagine that any random selection of 1700 individuals will be quite a interesting mix with a variety of (or sometimes lack of) social skills, political views and other neurosis.
this is part of life, and this BBS is no exception.

and yes, i agree, 914 content is and should remain to be the main focus on this board.

but you also have to realize that with such a diverse spectrum of people it is inevitable that from time to time a member will post content and/or personal opinions that is/are offensive to others.

i encourage everyone to simply "filter" out any noise that seems offensive to them and concentrate on the wealth of helpful information and advice that is available here ...

We try to make everyone happy.. but I'm learning that isn't possible. I have yet to hear a complaint from any of our lady members, ever. (Okay, I hear complaints from Pam, but they're usually about the stuff *I* post... especially when she learned about me ordering a Harley - from the BBS. smile.gif )

I'm glad that we have an option for folks to be able to turn off avatars, if they don't want to see them. When I use dialup, I turn off avatars then, just so pages load faster.

have a great day!

I think the question of whether nudity should be allowed on the BBS ties into the question of how much you want this BBS to grow, and what you want it's image to be.

If it's a place for a relatively small group of guys to BS and talk 914s, then pretty much anything goes and the self policing model works pretty well (we're all still here, right). Obviously 914club has always had an outlaw image from the beginning and I think generally the people on here dig it. I know I do. It was a refreshing change for everyone from what was available before 914club existed.

However...
If you want it to be "the" place for 914 info then you are undoubtedly excluding a certain portion of your target audience by not making it more PC. I can totally understand the point of view of the parent who doesn't want their kids to see the crap that's on here, or the guy who is reading the BBS at work just at the wrong moment when his boss walks by... Some people who could have been a part of the 914club scene are going to be turned away by the actions and words of a few members. I also suspect that some vendors and more formal organizations are not going to take the BBS seriously unless we behave with a certain level of maturity.

I think in the end this will all work itself out. But for now I have my avatars off so I can keep my job, although sometimes at home I will turn them on to see what the big deal is all about. huh.gif

Posted by: 415PB Apr 3 2004, 12:38 AM

1149 looks for my 4/01 thread and look what it evolved into. you're fortunate to have a job that you can accomplish in less than 8 hours and have time to spare. my bosses have always found me something more to do. collectively, figuring people in your co, how many man days do you think are lost? dandy for a co's bottom line.

As a former priest I don't know what to think about MikeZ new avatar either wub.gif

Seriously, at home I have choosen not to share this site with my pre-teen because of some of the content on this site, but that's my decision and I don't blame anyone cuz being here is a choice make. Great points of view have been given on this thread and I agree with both sides.

But why waste your time with soft porn? PM me some ZooLove or Scat or Snuff (but only if there's a 914 involved)

Posted by: Pam Apr 3 2004, 07:16 AM

Since Lawrence referred to complaints (or lack thereof) from the female population about avatars - I'll give you my thoughts about content on this BBS.

Boobies in avatars doesn't offend me in the least (other than when they are really nice and I'm jealous). There have been offtopic posts that have offended me and I've either 1) taken the time to voice my complaint on the BBS or 2) not viewed the thread again once I discovered it was something I didn't want to read or see (the dead animals through car windshields thread wasn't high on my list of things to look at so I didn't follow that thread).

Everyone has the choice of whether or not to read a thread once they are concerned about its content and I'm amused that often the most offensive threads get the most play. I figure if there is some smidgen of technical knowledge in those threads that go woefully off topic that when I need the info I'll ask it again and 40 people will give me the answer I'm looking for and another 40 will tell me it was just discussed. Either way - I get the info I need when I need it which is, as the admins correctly keep reminding us, the primary purpose of this board.

There will always be folks who think naked breasts are more dangerous than a pistol. I'm not one of them. There are plenty of things that I find slightly offensive...mostly to do with violence, dismemberment..you know shit like that. I ignore most of what offends me...seems to work for the most part. For some reason most people accept that nudity is harmful...without a shred of proof.... People routinely protect their children from breasts while letting them enjoy cartoons, sports, and films with violence that is portayed in such a way as to show none of the real world consequences. They let advertisers bombard their children with crap everywhere they go, but that is not offensive apparently. In other words, in our society it appears it is acceptable to punch someone in the face, but if we are shown a breast we get in a tissy...pathetic. Politicians pander to the puritan ethic while ignoring disease, poverty, and torture.....real problems with real consequences. Why are we more worried about words, images, and symbols than real issues? Because it is easy, and requires little thought. That's enough from me. I could go on for hours...

A couple of months ago I was watching a program that showed an autopsy in detail and was very graphic. I thought it was very odd that the nipples of the corpse were pixled out however her skull cap was shown being removed and the entire chest cavity was shown being hacked open and exposed.
Strange what is and is not acceptable for we, the prime time cable watching public.

I couldn't possibly have anything to add to this thread, so here I go.

You have to agree that it's about more than just the cars. Otherwise this place would be CSPAN boring and we'd only need one smiley, this one smile.gif We, as a group, have a personality which includes a fair amount of "in your face" attitude; and Zois is our poster child. In my humble he loves swinging his proboscis around in public a little too much. And I think I know why. I typed zois into Google's image search and this is the first thing that came up. Ladies and gentlemen I give you botanist baron Karl Zois.

IPB Image

If that were my legacy I'd probably do anything to change it too. Yeah, I know, he says he's greek, but Google doesn't lie. Besides I'm sure he doesn't really want us poking around his greek heritage either. (heehee, this is fun, I feel like Alfred). However, he's also a contributing member of our little world and when browsing the board you never know what you're going to get.

And as far as who "get's it", yeah Mike, a lot of us get it; but nobody likes drinking from a firehose. If it's more important for people to get it than it is for people to feel welcome here then please continue. I'd rather go to the West Coast Classic, an event that won't take place if some of our people check out.

There's more to you than boobies and prominently displayed index fingers. As I discovered today, there's a little boy inside you, dressed in lederhosen and holding a bouqet of flowers. Let us see more of this (HA!).

Censorship promotes de evolution in that it panders to the weak and lazy in our population.

Weak because it panders to the representative organizm with the thinest skin there by causeing the rest of the heard to slow down raising their potential for getting eaten by the lions.

Lazy because if everyone else sterilizes the world for you you dont have to teach your offspring about the real world. You are then more easliy able to fabricate your version of reality without so much work effort being involved.

Censorship is the weak organisms attempt at control over the strong organism. Its like escaping from jail while being chained to a 450# out of shape inmate. On our own we may have success, but with our 450# monkey on our back success is far less likely.

Feed them to the lions, THIN THE HEARD, break the chains. Your lazyness does not constitute change on my part.

For those of you whom take the initiative to not read that which may offend, and whom take the initiative to actively filter out that which you feel your children should not view I applaud you. You give hope to the genetic strength of our species, and our society as a whole. Keep up the good work.

(I think that is pretty damn fucken eloquent!)

Here's a rule suggestion:
Photos/pic's of anything safe enough to place in a baby's mouth without harming the child, are okay.

More nips, but no more 914's, then!

I have yet to hear a complaint from any of our lady members, ever.

Like I said in another thread, if it's in the toilet, I just flush it. As for avatars that move, somehow I've got the 'movement' turned off, which is fine by me. wink.gif

Posted by: Lawrence Apr 3 2004, 11:38 PM

Good for you, Joan. I encourage anyone who feels the need, please exercize your right to turn off avatars. It's a frill, like smilies (you can turn those off, too), and not seeing either doesn't detract from the 914 information here.

Not that complaints by men aren't taken seriously, but complaints by lady BBS members are a good barometer of what's happening.

I just read this thread for the first time from start to finish. I'm speechless. I should remain that way, but I probably won't. The last time I got involved in a board controversy, I made an ass out of myself.

Uh-oh. Now I'm lazy because I typed ass instead of asinine.

Both sides of this argument have made some excellent points. Some were profound, while others were downright hilarious.

My only comment would be this:

I think this thread exemplifies what this board is all about. And that's just the *I* like it. wub.gif

Hey! cool_shades.gif

Thanks to all for your comments, concerns, rips, cuts and sense of humor. laugh.gif

I'm sure that everyone is well aware that this thread has been viewed by near everyone. More interest than any other recent topic. ( the numbers don't lie )
Ah , the human element IS more important then the automotive.

I appreciate the fact that we're all individuals, with personalities, and we can bounce ideas around like nobody's business. boldblue.gif

What was the avatar? Damn I always miss everything (Alfred). Mikes avatar today is his daughter's first Communion? (couldn't be any sweeter). I don't care what anybody's avatar is, frankly they are quite entertaining most of the time and since all I can do is post a picture I am pretty impressed with their abilititys to put these on.

I am never offended because I CHOOSE not to be!

You go Mike!!

Send me an email...you can get the animated version....

I find it wierd that a nice set of hooters gets panned, while a picture of a guy in lingerie porking the tail pipe of a Land Rover gets a pass....

As to the one post wonder who started this whole mess....well he can bite bite my 71mm crank shaft...."mandantory Porsche content"......

MikeZ you've got my vote! smilie_pokal.gif
You can turn the avatars off and that's not good enough?
For the people at work who complain about the avatars on this board...wait a minute, aren't you at work? How in the hell can you complain when you're doin' something that your boss probably doesn't want you doing?
This board is a slice of the community, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I like the way admin pretty much stays out of the way. If you're offended by what's on this board you've got more problems than anyone here can help you with.

the only thing offensive about mike's avatar is that i was offended that mike never asked permission from me to use a picture of my girlfriend. burnout.gif

3. Ask the person to change their avatar, but accept that the naughty avatar might remain.

. . .

Another alternative:

Use the broswer "Firefox" (www.mozilla.org).

Right-click on the graphic. Select "Block images from this server" - the browser will not load images from THAT server anymore.

I love this topic.

Can we meet again about this in say 3 months or so ??

How I describe the club to people I meet:

A train wreck. EVERYONE stops to see the wreck.

I treat this site like my virtual garage.

In the end, Its not about the car. Anyone can own a 914. Its about the people that own the car. Jeroem trashed his tail dragger. No 914 content. but, it was important to him, and so it was important to me. Lawrence is in far off Iraq. Prolly not a teener for several thousand miles, but, its important to me. Bowlsbyfinds a mint Grasshopper in a barn in mexico, I like to know. Miles has a bad day building Banjo's for rednecks, I like to know. And yeah, Jenny finds a place for paint and body work, I like to know. Or Muller makes more bearings, or JP wins a AX, or Steve T discusses liberalism, or Quarl posts about His Bushyness. Its all stuff I like to know. It makes this board someplace I like to go.

I'm kinda suprized this isn't evident to everyone.

we don't know that ...

while it is OK for everyone in my company to browse the web during work hours co-workers still could be offended by content on my screen.
the problem is actually a legal one.
you can get in trouble fast these days, especially here in kalifornia.

As a new guy to the board, I feel compelled to to say the reason I AM a member is the wide range of things you find on this board.

I am an attorney, and have VERY little spare time to putz around on the net. When I do have a few minutes, I come here. Maybe I will read a great thread about valve adjustments, or maybe I will read a very funny thread about nominations for the "biggest asshole" to be awarded a cool hat. The idea that this board would be a better place or more respected if 98% of the members were to conform their behavior to the PC needs to the remaining 2% of the members is flat out silly. Particularly when those 2% have the ability to remedy the problem with a simple setting change that doesn't require change on the part of the remaining 98% of us.

I love this board for the same reason I like Tony Kornheiser's sports radio show on ESPN. I am a big sports fan, so I will hear the big sports stories of the day. But if that was all I wanted, I could listen to any one of the other 20 sports radio shows in the market. But Mr. Tony is just as likely to have a guest on to talk about movies or books, and that sets him apart from those other shows. The variety here is EXACTLY the same.

If you think this board would have increased acceptance if the PC police were allowed to rule, you are dead wrong. It would be one more source for vanilla conformity that would be of no interest to me or probably 75% of the members here. Its hard to see the up side that. I am very much reminded of the South Park episode 2 weeks ago dealing with the embarassing difference between the ways we react to nudity as oposed to violence in this country. If you missed it, it's worth the effort to find it if you can.
