914World.com _ 914World Garage _ The "Official" official Red Rocks 2010 Registration Thread
Posted by: TROJANMAN May 10 2010, 08:02 AM
OK boys and girls. This is the official, "I want to go to the Red Rocks Classic and see the pretty rocks and 914's thread"
Here is the DEAL!!!!
The event is being held September 10-12th in Moab, UT. Yes, UT. So there is the chance that you may come with one wife but leave with 3.
The registration charge is $67. Well what do I get you ask?
BBQ meet and greet on Friday evening Catered lunch on Saturday Dinner on the river Saturday night Maybe an award (if you're car is nice enough) (or ugly enough, depending on the award) And the perennial favorite: Goody Bag And Door Prizes!!!!
Not to mention, Friendship, Comradery, Memories, and Scenery you will see no where else on Earth.
Take a train, take a bus, take a plane, or drive a car, but just make sure you bring a camera, a sense of humor, and your liver.......
This is a time you will remember for the rest of your life. The indigenous people are still singing folk songs in the hills about our first Red Rocks Classic.
Here is the official Hotel:
http://www.red-rocklodge.com/rooms.html
At last count there were 11 rooms available. If you call and the hotel is full, please send me a PM. We have a back up hotel down the street that we are planning on using if necessary. But in the meantime, we are going to overtake the current hotel as we have the entire motel reserved.
We could fill this entire thread with and photos, but you really need to experience this event for yourself. Come one, Come All, you don't want to miss this.......
This event is 100% not for profit. In the past, if we had any left over funds, they were donated to a local Moab charity.
If you would like to pay at the event, the registration fee is $77 We do not accept Nigerian certified funds, or Monopoly money. Sorry.
Please mail checks to: Brant McClung 9106 fleetwood avenue longmont, colorado 80503
PM Brant, or myself if you have further questions regarding the event, or registration process.
We hope to see you in Moab

Brant,
When you open PayPal to send money, there are two tabs ... one is marked Personal. If you click on that tab and then on "Gift", money can be sent without PayPal charges.
Just thought I would let you know.

Thanks Ron... I actually didn't know that so if anyone wants to register through paypal as "gift" they can skip the 3%
We won't close registration until about a week prior and we will have full refunds until that same point (paying the food vendors right before the event)

Please let me know if you have problems booking a room. I suspect the hotel may run out of rooms for us and I will need to book some rooms at our overflow location.

I've had my room booked for at least a month. I don't write checks and Sandy won't let me use pay pal. She runs that account. I will have her send the funds as a gift.
I'm kind of the girl of the relationship. I like shopping and spending money. She keeps me in check.
BTW: If you send the funds as a gift be sure to send a happy birthday note.
Do not write something like " Event Fee" or something like that. We were shut down during the Buttercup deal with the transaxle raffle.
Oh, BTW: That's $ 67.00 per person just to clarify= $ 134.00 for two

I'm really tempted. Are there any SoCal caravans planned. I think I'd go if so. There is safety in numbers. Like the vast herds of the wildebeast. No, not the lemurs going over the cliff.

So Cal is always well represented. There is usually a Thursday night layover in Mesquite with their $25 room specials.

This would be better than a hot tub and pool full of concrete chunks my friend.
Posted by: TROJANMAN May 20 2010, 09:33 AM
IF YOU BOOKED A ROOM AT THE HOST HOTEL, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BOOKED IT IN YOUR NAME.
I just called and they still have 5 rooms left under my name, which were part of the original group reservation. If you did not transfer the reservation into your name, then those rooms are still showing as available in their computer and are available to whoever calls in for them.
So if you have not booked a room yet, there are technically still 5 ROOMS LEFT.
P.S. I am still working on a second hotel. It is 2 blocks away and I am trying to negotiate a lower rate for the overflow. Every other nearby hotel seems to be booked for that weekend.
If you have questions about registration, please contact Brnat.
Posted by: TROJANMAN May 20 2010, 09:58 AM
3 rooms left now and I am working on a second hotel.
Posted by: RJMII May 20 2010, 10:21 AM
I just reserved one for my wife and I. We got two queens, but are hoping to find a sitter for the boys for the weekend.
Posted by: TROJANMAN May 20 2010, 11:57 AM
Well those five rooms didn't last long..........
The next closest hotel that has available rooms at a reasonable price is The Bowen Hotel. It is letter "C" http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=hotel&fb=1&gl=us&ei=5KX0S85zkdi2A4q60YgF&ved=0CDIQtgMwAA&sll=38.575506,-109.551748&sspn=0.00463,0.011362&split=1&rq=1&ev=zo&radius=0.37&hq=hotel&hnear=&ll=38.575506,-109.551748&spn=0.00463,0.011362&t=h&z=17 (host hotel is "F"). If you still need a room, I would give them a call.
The manager has not called me back yet, but they do have 15 rooms available. They supposedly don't give group discounts, so feel free to book a room on your own.
http://www.bowenmotel.com/
Rooms are $90ish a night.
FYI: The Ramada was $199 a night and the Best Western was $185 a night. River Canyon Lodge was full.

OK, I just sent my 77 to someone I don't know, I booked a room in a motel that I've never seen (the Bowen), I haven't even asked my wife if she wants to go yet and I'm driving a 35 yr old cantankerous car into the desert. Shit, I think I'm gonna have a great time. PS We could hire an auto carrier to take 12 of our cars then unload us 2 blocks from the hotel. Would it be wise to bring my atty?

You could be like Silva, LVSteveH and other wussys and trailer your car to the event.
You're only in the desert till St George. You then pass into the hallowed grasslands of Utah, complete with the smell of fresh cow dung. A must see and stop is the town of Beaver ... I'll leave it to your imagination.
Once past Cedar City, you make a right turn and head out over the mountains into the vast wasteland of Utah .. 125 miles or so of nothing but dirt ... then about Green River, you make a right turn and head toward the Red Rocks (Moab).
13 hours in the seat (764 miles as I remember) ... stops only for gas, grass, food and personal relief (unless you are outfitted with a Pilot Tube).
My favorite is to leave Riverslime on Thur aftnoon ... stop in Mesquite, NV overnight and then make the journey to Moab arriving in time for Tequilageddon on Friday Nite. Avoid a guy wearing kilts and carrying bottles of Scottish Firewater.
Posted by: TROJANMAN May 20 2010, 03:45 PM
FYI: The host hotel has started a "waiting list" They will call you if someone cancels their reservation.
In the meantime, please book rooms at the other hotel I listed.
See you guys in Moab
------------------------------------------- And it's not 13 hours. 10 maybe. Don't listen to the grumpy guy. His idea of 13 hours in the seat is just a flashback of his prison fantasies........

Hey Ron, The early Thrs. departure sounds good. Do I need to make reservations or does this place rent by the hour. I'll talk to you before then but I'm up for that trip. I still owe you 10 bucks, too. And listen guys. If you see any man in Kilts drop something; do us all a favor and pick it up for him. Before he bends over. And Trojenman, I called and asked them them if they would take my info in case of a cancellation (around noon) and she told me that they would be happy to stick my name/number next to the screen but that I should probably call every few weeks because they had no automated system to track such things and they might lose my stickie next to the screen. It appears things have changed. Hopefully I'm at the top of that list. I can always cancel the udder one should a cancellation occur.

Standing around in a parking lot and drinking is not considered an organized event.
It is if you stand in alphabetical order, or from tallest to not as tallest.
That isn't too fair...SLITS would always be on the end.....

I keep sending her the pay pal info. She extremely busy right now but she'll get to it. She is averaging about 400 emails a day with back to back daily meetings and two online masters classes... I personally volunteer to push Trevors car all day long. Or send him a starter if he needs one...

Just a reminder about hotels.
The host hotel is booked.
The next closest hotel that has available rooms at a reasonable price is The Bowen Hotel. It is letter "C" http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=hotel&fb=1&gl=us&ei=5KX0S85zkdi2A4q60YgF&ved=0CDIQtgMwAA&sll=38.575506,-109.551748&sspn=0.00463,0.011362&split=1&rq=1&ev=zo&radius=0.37&hq=hotel&hnear=&ll=38.575506,-109.551748&spn=0.00463,0.011362&t=h&z=17 (host hotel is "F"). If you still need a room, I would give them a call.
http://www.bowenmotel.com/
Rooms are $90ish a night.
FYI: The Ramada was $199 a night and the Best Western was $185 a night.
I haven't checked availability in a while...........

Registurd!
Posted by: ConeDodger Aug 2 2010, 03:53 PM
I am already registered but as it turns out my wife and child would like to go (not really). My wife is the great-great-great grandchild of a Philippine princess and as such is extremely wealthy (not really). This event affords an opportunity for the organizers of RRC to help out this descendant of Philippine royalty. She has been trying to figure out a way to convert her wealth which is in Philippine pesos to American dollars without drawing the attention of the American IRS.
So here is her proposition. She would like to register and not go. She will send you a check for 12 million pesos for which she expects registration for herself and our son and a return USPS money order for $3,000,000,000 (not really). The organizers can keep the excess funds to run their event What a deal! How can you pass up this opportunity?
This has been a twist on the Nigerian scam and as such is completely bogus. But the RRC crew got a free bump out of it...

I have attended the last three RRCs, but this year I can't make it due to a 206 mile bicycle ride.
The first two years I didn't bring a 914 and last year I barely brought one and it didn't run most of the time. This year it's running great and I can't make it.
Maybe next year I guess...

So just throwing it out there to see if anyone is lonewolfing it. Be happy to split everything. Or anyone not going that wants to rent their 914 for the weekend . Seriously though it would be sweet to come. It being late notice I don't know what the hotel situation is like. Ideally be great to spilt a room with someone. Well let me know if anyone has some room. I'll be booking my flight for work wednesday. So I need to decide quick

Okay I am taking the plunge. I've booked most everything at this point. I've still got my flight but am waiting to hear for sure on rides. I'm kinda hitching along so I hope there will be some open seats in 914's once I am there .
Brant I will be mailing out my check from registration tommorow.
If all goes well I will be there & bumming rides. Worst case I will end up coming in a rental. Either way I am pretty much commited to be there. I appreciatte all the willingness to help me get there too. Going to be a little strange being there for 5+ days without a car . Oh well I am sure it will be a great time. I am stoked
Jamie... I can give you a ride from Moab back to PHX on Sunday (its on my way to Tucson). Where do you need to be in PHX? I can't give you a ride up because don't know my plans for getting up to Moab yet because I have some timing conflicts.
Oh and I'm about 95% sure I'm going to flat-tow the teener so you can ride in comfort (i.e. AC)
If there is any way you can fly into SLC and hitch a ride, man that would save you hours of ass time on the way in.

Hey Jason thanks for the offer. I'm actually snagging a ride back to Phoenix from Wills. I'm also planning on flying into SLC too. I'm hoping to snag a ride down with Eric Shea. I've got a back up if that doesn't work out. As far as at Red Rocks. I will be looking for a seat for the drives .

I looked into flying into Grand Junction & taking Eric up on his offer. Then driving his wife's 914 for the event. Then back up to Grand Junction & catch a flight down to Phoenix. Wouldn't quite work out timing wise. They are leaving thursday to head down. I can't catch a flight until early friday morning. I will gladly take you up on a ride while we are there. I won't even have a crappy rental like last time . I've been holding off booking my flights but need to get on it. Sucks not having my 914 working. Realistically though I doubt I would be driving it out if I did. Just don't have enough time to make the drive out too. Especially with me going down to Phoenix after Red Rocks. That would be one hellacious drive in a 914. Corvallis Oregon to Moab to Phoenix & back to Corvallis. In a 914 with no air conditioning in this heat. Thats only 2751 miles round trip & somewhere around 45 hours of driving . Flights are sounding great
Oh yeah in Phoenix I am staying at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Supposed to be a pretty kick ass resort. Not exactly sure where it sits in Phoenix. Supposed to have like 3 golf courses though. Sounds like my kind of place

As soon as my speedometer cable arrives (tomorrow) it gets installed, timing gets checked, CV bolt check, points are petronix but a spare is packed. An oil change and pipe cleaning the week before and I'll be "good to go"!

in case the seperate thread I posted falls to the bottom of the stack...
Because I'm under contract to pay for the food and vendors, I have to give final numbers to them on the first of the month
So... I need to bug everyone to get your registrations in if you are still planning on going...
and there are a couple of people who haven't paid that I want to prompt too If I've already worked out a payment discussion with you previously, then your good to go.. just bring cash to the event and know that I'll bill you whether you eat or not if I get billed by the man...
but this thread is really about additional registrations. if you've been thinking about attending you need to make arraingements so I can order food for you.
Registration deadline is going to be 8/31
can't wait to see you all there! brant

Utah 128 from I-70 to Moab:
That is my favorite road in the whole wide world.
Is that the road I followed you down in the rental beater?
I have CRS so I can't say for sure. But it has to be because it's the only route I'll take into Moab.
Your secret is safe with me.
Hey, I know you don't like caravans but can we follow you again if we happen to run into you on the way? This time we will be in the Alien. No rental beater this time.
You're always welcome at my house Rick. In fact you should stop in and see the new place. We can go from here. I could do some grillin... or not. An in and out would be fine Friday morning too. Gimme a call.

I'm thinking:
Dino Tracks - Dead Horse Point Trip - AM Arches Delicate Arch Hike - PM Sunday Breakfast at Red Cliffs Lodge to accomodate Rons' HWY 128 request (kinda like the Lil'Feller)?
I'd be happy to put together and host these things as need be.

I stopped by Kevins last night to check out the Car-B-Q. It's looking good. We came up with an idea to incorporate a folding table against the outside of the firewall and a shelf at the bottom that would run the width of the tongue and to also help stabilize the tongue. I'm gathering up materials in the next couple of days and then heading back over to weld it in and some other areas that need welding.

Eric,
The plan (Saturday)was to do a La Salle Loop with a detour to the Dino Tracks, then let people hit Arches in the afternoon if they have time (or the other way around). I think we ate lunch at the summit last time. Dinner at Red Cliffs is around sunset. That will take us halfway up 128, so if we leave a little earlier, some people could head up to Dewey Bridge.
We tried Deadhorse point one year on a Friday, and it was just too loooong. But if the weather is nice, maybe we try again? The rest of the itinerary involves blacktop and beer..............
Red Cliffs has a great buffet on Sunday morning, but I know most of the southerners try and hit the road early.
Posted by: Eric_Shea Aug 31 2010, 01:06 PM
Sounds like you have it sussed.
The Dino tracks I was thinking about are North of town. Much better tracks.
Eric was saying something...but all I could read was blah blah blah...or something.
Posted by: ThinAir Aug 31 2010, 03:17 PM
I remember some kind of old bridge along 128 when I drove it to get to last year's RRC in GC - I take it that that's not the bridge that burned, so how much farther upriver was Dewey Bridge?

Now for travel purposes only, any woman riding with me, the first question I ask is, "How many miles is your bladder rated for?".
Helps me figure out how many water closets we will visit in 697 miles (+ some maybe).
And there are stretches across I-70 between Richfield, UT and Green River, UT where they are no bushes or trees. In fact there isn't ANYTHING out there.
The Virgin River Gorge is a high speed, gentle turn slalom.

I drove it around a little this morning 1:00 am ) And just got back from the car wash. My one concern is the transaxle is a little noisy on decel. It's fine at cruising speed and excel and it shifts like a dream so I'm not going to worry about it.
Things accomplished: engine and transaxle out, traced a wire abmormality to my CIS parts, cleaned off 10 lbs of grime caused by a leaking seal I couldn't locate, replaced the input shaft bearing in the transaxle, rebuilt the calipers, replaced the rubber lines, dissasembled all 4 CV's and repacked or replaced as needed, modified the rear trunk bulkhead for my throttle linkage clearance, finished 1:00 am this morning..
Anything else? In my best Arnold... I need a vacation!

Why so late? And more importantly, what shoes will Sharon be wearing? We always like to coordinate.
(inside Willis' head) "If I put the pinky lifter smiley, then people can't call me gay and I'll really find out if she's gonna wear her Chuck T's or not, genius."
Pul-eaze!! Everyone knows Sharon wears Vans, not Chucks. I got my Vans on but they look like sneakers...
Must.....get.....song....out.....of.....head
Actually, I have both. I have maroon Chucks that compliment several outfits quite nicely, but the Vans, of course, are the classic choice. But it's not shoe weather... it's flip flop weather! So I'll have several pair of flip flops that match my outfits instead.

1.) The Live Uploader doesn't work for me
I don't know that it matters. I hear the host hotel doesn't have internet.

If he does, it's just proof positive he has great taste in pedwear.

Mike and Stewie (his pug) just rolled in to Flagstaff. The teener ran great! We're on our way in the morning.

WE need to figure out something to do before you all get here. Looks like we will have some time to kill. Well after our early morning brunch at 10. Not sure I will be ready for a nap after that . Guess we will have to do some sort of drive . Maybe we can go somewhere & watch some crazy jeeps roll or something

Jeeper John and his wife Jerri are here as well.
Going to sleep in and maybe cruise down to Newspaper Rock.
