I am about to fire up my engine for the first time after rebuilding it. I'm using an L-Jet distributor with no vacuum advance or retard. I'm using carbs.
I'm trying to determine where I should set the dizzy. From what I could gather off the internet, the total mechanical advance for this dizzy at 3600 rpms is 21-25 degrees (I'll average it to 23 degrees).
I think 28 degrees total advance is what is recommended as a starting point so am I correct in setting the static timing to 5 degrees BTDC?
That'll work.
Funny how these things come in pairs... http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=106634.
5 BTDC should be fine. There is also a little line in the distributor edge that shows you where the rotor should point.
While I did my deck height measurements, I had installed the fan shroud and marked my fan at exact TDC. My fan is from an L-Jet car and only had a mark at 7.5 BTDC. So I will go with 5 degrees BTDC. Wish me luck!
