Not much to report yet other than I'm really excited about the car. I can't say why but I haven't been this interested in a car in years. Back in 2006 when I picked up the other Raspberry car from Britt I did some research on the color. It is actually listed as "strawberry" in the Du Pont line of finishes. I think DaveP even told us that but we never really changed it. We all have been calling the color Raspberry so long now I can't bring myself to change it now. So as far as I'm concerned these are the berry sisters.
I sprayed out some test panels over the weekend with the idea in mind to have the acrylic enamel scanned and have the color mixed in single stage urothane. I went to the paint store and had it scanned. I had a pint mixed and I am going to spray out a couple more panels to check the color conversion. I damn near died when I was told a gallon of color will cost near $ 800.00! This is before the reducer/activator! The pint I purchased today was like $ 110.00! ouch!
Well anywho, Here's the place for the progress reports. I hope to really get into this car by late August. We shall see.

I just received the title in the mail from Jason in AZ. I contacted 1-800-porsche ext. #3 this morning to see if I could start the process of tracking down the port of entry and the dealer the berry sisters were delivered to. The woman I spoke with stated I have to wait until I have the titles in my name before they can give out any info but they have a research dept ready to help gather what ever they can. Cool!
This should take awhile. MN is slooow with title transfers and I will likely have a healthy debate over the price paid and what they deem the value is. Just another tax rip off method..

I think Porsche lists the color as Fraise, which translates to ? Can't wait to see the progress. I'm probably going to have some sellers remorse along the way. I was never going to paint that car pink, so I'm glad Rick has it.
Does that color make anyone else hungry for ice cream?
Even though I have not had time to really work on the car I have been ordering parts. Full brake rebuild kits and pads, new rubber hoses. I'm hunting for a set of factory steel rockers.
Anyone compare reproduction steel rockers to a factory set? George? How close are they? Good or excellent?
Since Sir Andy's ISP was unable to figure out how to make our new home work. I spent my time working on the Raspberry car.
Transfered the chassis No. to the new trunk floor.
I had a 64 Ghia that I painted Rasperry back in the 80's. A very cool color for a curvy Ghia.
I didn't want to loose the door jamb sticker and there was a thick edge from the color change from when it was masked off. I spent about an hour and a half washing around the sticker with paper towels and thinner.

When I opened the head lights to start pulling them out I dicovered it has Bosch H4's Cool!
Every piece of plastic and rubber on this car are baked. I mean baked! I will be changing every seal and piece of trim.
Dash pad, windsheild trim and glass is out. I ended up pulling the windsheild and saving it without cracking it. I would like to get this to the blaster by the weekend. I still need to work over the tar boards on the floor. I think the floor is perfect but I want to be sure. The channel for the seals specially the front trunk is perfect!

Fraise it is, but that is French for strawbery. Somehow the English translation is raspberry, so somewhere it is a mis-translation. Also in factory literature as rose red. Whatever, it is not pink as some computer monitors show. It is a nice rich red.
BTW: I can't tell yet whether the dash frame was painted Delphi or if the brush on adhesive they used to glue the dash foam in place dried that color. I have seen dash frames painted all colors.

I have 2 that same color in spots. I assumed it was a zinc chromate type primer.
BTW - that color match looks dead nuts from the pics.
Here's another example of the amount of heat this car was exposed to. The engine lid seal turned into a chunk of brittle plastic and shattered and splintered as I tried to remove it. All the rubber has some amount of the same condition.

I bought a new tool today. I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a soda blaster. My goal is to strip the interior surfaces of the repaint. I am trying to leave the factory color or as much of it as I can anyway. I know I can paint over the factory color but I don't know what the second paint job is. It looks like a base/clear job. If it's an early base coat it will likely shrivel when painted over. I can strip the outside body panels in a day but the inside surfaces are harder to do. Often the prep work for a repaint is little more than a quick sand with a skuff pad. The soda blaster is working nicely. its doing a nice job but slow going.

As I was stripping things off the car I discovered the right fender had been replaced. This was done early enough in the cars life that the entire fender was done. Who ever did the work did a nice job with the exception of the brass they used to weld it on. It's lucky this car was a west coast car all it's life or the braising would have been the kiss of death. I will likely just sand blast the channel and the entire inside mounting surface where the fender was joined to the car. With proper metal conditioning, priming and seam sealer (which there is none of now...) the car will be unaffected by the repair. I was suprised to see the lack of rust where the fender was attached and the seam sealer was not replaced on the inside wheel house.

I worked on the trunk floor repair panel. I decided to cut out the holes for access caps to give the trunk a factory look. This is not nessesary as these are really only used for access for the factory spot welders.

If you notice there is a dimple on the edge of the hole. It acts as a stop for the tabs when the cap rotates.

Rick, my 914 says it misses you and MN and wants to come pay a visit to Abbey and the Raspberries and the Healey and any extraterrestrials when they're all done for some TLC. I guess since none are ever "done", pencil us in for the day after never!
No dipping as far as I know or we wouldn't be dealing with the rust issues we have with these cars.

They were dipped in primer, but the paint was sprayed on.

I'd have to disagree with the dipping...of any kind. For that to be the case the car would have to be dipped with the longs not welded in, then the heater hoses attached, then the outer long welded on. Welding after dipping would mean grinding paint around the area where the weld of the outer longs would take place. It would also negate the reason for dipping in the first place, which is to get to areas you can't normally get to once the frame/body is assembled. Also, dipping is not perfect. In other words, paint flows off the frame once it's pulled from the tank. We would undoubtedly see some small runs from the dip process and I've yet to ever see them on a 914.

Now when I get some time I can finish welding in the trunk floor. I'm thinking about buy a Tig first. I think it would be the perfect tool to complete the butt weld without disturbing the spot welds. Limited heat spread.
Research Karmann a little. I think you'll find they didn't have the technology in place at their facilities until the late 70's.

Ok fellas, I had an inquiry about this car and thought I would bump it with an update. I just ordered the #47 Tartan kit for the interior. Thanks to Mark and 914Rubber.com This interior will scream outrageousness! I know it's a 74 fabric but I couldn't resist! It's the first one of the samples. If you notice there is a dash pattern of the color in the fabric.
