914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Early fog light grills in black plastic / "chrome"

Posted by: Mikey914 May 28 2010, 07:17 AM

Introducing the new fog light grills ----------------------------

These are made from a solid black plastic, not white like the OEM, so no need to paint unless you want another color than black (hot pink for those Miata guys).

So, if it gets hit by a rock. It may chip, but it's black all the way through, not white like the others. They will be $ 84 a pair on the pre-purchase. I will have the first production run this next week (end of the week as it's short).

I'm also working on having these plated in 3 stage nickel chrome. I'm not sure if it will be successful, but my plater has done this before, and seemed to think he can dial it in. He has 3 samples that he is working on this next week, if he gets it done this next week I'll post pictures.

Not sure exactly what the adder will be for chrome, but I can tell you it will be allot less than OEM, and I won't do it if they don't look identical.

Hope this was worth the wait.

Black plastic ones will start shipping this next Friday.

Just wanted to post the follow up on this. I've been working on the plating on these and running a few parts through the plating process. We're tweaking the plating as the base adhesion is good, but copper substrate wasn't bonding properly with the nickel. We have a little more work to do on this, and I'm confident that we can make it work, but it's more of a learning curve than we thought. The good news is it 's just a matter of getting the copper properly activated. We'll be playing around with this this next week. But it did cut into my production in time and the few sets that I had planned to ship. I will be contacting all that signed up for these as soon as I have more of the black plastic ones ready. The chrome will be about 2 weeks behind, and I will have the numbers finalized this next week as soon as the process is correct.

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 24 2010, 03:14 PM

Need to do up another test batch. We when with tripple Nickel, but last last one the chemisty looked great until we hit it with cold water. Normally not a problem, but the plastic didn't retain the heat like the metal would have, and it cracked. We need top confirm that if we make a few minor changes we will get waht we want, we also have to perform the adhesion testing, which from what we have done so far looks like it will not be a problem.

The problem here is that I will be on vacation starting the 3rd for about 12 days, and we will be out of town, so unless I can get a set in before I leave there will be a delay.

Posted by: dem Oct 17 2010, 07:22 AM

Is the chromed idea doomed? I have fancy new stainless steel bumpers coming from Vietnam and shabby fog light grills.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 17 2010, 08:20 AM

No, just my plans keep getting moved around. I have to get these prepped and over to the chroming co, and it requires that I shoot a solvent based sunstrate, so I need to go over to my buddys booth to shoot it (also if it's npt perfectly clean ist shows). He's been too busy when I've had time lately, but I'm hoping to have the substrate shot to do this this week.

Well in the long journey, but finishing on these has been figured out. I need to change some of my formulation on the material I use to cast, as the the process uses more heat than planned for, we have a few good sets, but will be doing another run on these now the process is figured out. Next the windshiled trim biggrin.gif

The attached is a picture of the good and the rejects.
I have 7 sets of good ones, and 3 driver's side that turned out.

Sent out the PMs for the 1st 5 on the list, I'll let the dust settle a day or so, and follow up on down. We are doing up more now we know the process works, but they are about 4 weeks (maybe less) from being ready to ship. The killer part is they have to ship to CA, and back as we couldn't find a local vendor that could do it.

PS here's on setting on my bumper (there were 8 set's, but ones for me)

I'll make these available in order of response.
I'll also post more.

Nice job on these Mark! smile.gif

Been a pass. in both & understand they're both good ships, but the ole Dash 8 seems an odd step back for a regional airline to take today!? confused24.gif

BTW folks, these look pretty dead on for the OEM factory ones! I'd get them in chrome, except that I'd already popped for the Porsche parts before Mark started making them. The shot of one in Mark's bumper looks like a perfect fit too!

Thx
By the way the problem with the Q4 is that you can program the computer, but it has a mind of its own, and many times I have just kicked off the auto pilot and hand fly it. Something wrong with an ac that you command a 30 deg turn to the left and it goes right.
As you can tell, I'm not in love with this one.

Hey Mike,

were you able to get the standard sized wheel caps sent out last Friday?

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 21 2012, 02:10 AM

Actually still waiting on finishing. They tell me this week by Friday. Longer than I want, but they got a larger run of product in front of me for Intel.

Sorry posted in error this was a reference to the wheel caps. I'm still cating these at about 1 set a day, so I'm still about 3 weeks before I'll have enough to send out for finishing.

Why would I want to buy a set of these chromies? dry.gif

I've spent the last 5 years scrounging around, buying used ones, in order to find a matching pair that look decent....then you offer a brand new pair at a killer price. There goes my carefully selected inventory. dry.gif

Ah, WTF.gif .'veal

Can you put me down for a pair, Mark? I've already bought just about every other product you have put out there for us, may as well keep my percentage up.

In other words....THANKS for another great and useful product

Mark,

Lately I haven't been on the 914 World site consistently, and I was wondering if this group buy has been started. I know your first post indicates it will run through March, but I didn't know if you had sent PayPal details yet? Just wondering, no hurry.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 14 2012, 10:53 PM

I've got 15 sets done, need to run another 15 to send to finishing. Yes the GB is going on. All you have to do is express interest and I will be coming back through to contact those that have signed up. As it takes me awhile to do these, and I have to have enough to cover the minumum finishing cost. I will keep the GB open into April, until I get everyone who has signed up covered. Heck, it's almost 2 yrs since I started the thread, and finally got the finishing figured out. So +1 and I'll be coming back up the list as soon as I get the next group done.

Early fog light grills in black plastic / "chrome"

Useless trivia of the day:

The early 914 prototype cars had the chrome foglight grills made out of metal, not plastic.

Going back through and updating some threads. This is one. I have all the grills cast, I'm cleaning them up now which is time consuming, but I hope that they will be done by Monday. As you can see I have a few to do. I have to clean up the edges. You can see how they look before and after. I should have back in 2 weeks.

I will contact those that have signed up as soon as I have them in hand.

These are actually a black poly resin, I'm having them metalized like OEM, I sent off all the ones I had, but I'm casting more now so I can fill the black orders and have another run going in a few weeks, as it looks like these are more popular than I thought they would be.

I think thats not a good idea. Then Niklas should pay our customs from USA to Sweden. But it would be very nice if you could send OmaPossus and my sets in one shipment to Finland. We can easly share the costs here.
