Posted by: SLITS Jun 16 2010, 11:12 AM

Just a friendly note .... The famous Perry Kiehl Umbrella Cover is available again. He has 5 left in stock for anyone looking.

If you haven't seen one of the these, they are outstanding quality and FIT.

I have no stake in this, but this is the second one I have bought from him.

I'd like one with a custom clear vinyl "windshield", then I could drive in the rain with my umbrella. Right? RIGHT?!

Posted by: 9146986 Jun 16 2010, 04:02 PM

Good one Dan!

I tried to tow a car with one on, once. Worked fine up to about 30 mph and then it opened up like a parachute.

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jun 16 2010, 04:07 PM

Dan's in Chicago. He can't get it up to 30! biggrin.gif

+1 for the umbrella +1 for the Perry.

Posted by: john grier Jun 16 2010, 05:14 PM

If you do not have enough garage space these umbrellas are what you need.
I have at least 2 for my 914's and one for the 911.
They keep out all the rain even if you get 14 inches in three days.
They also keep out the sun so the interior stays cool.
Very easy to put on and take off
It takes about a minute.
I like to put it on at night and take it off when I go to work as it keeps all the condensation off the windsheild.

Good news! Found the same material, the only difference is it's off white, not the gray.

So the covers are now in white only.

Should have material around the first of the week, and then covers to ship around the 18th!

Posted by: 9146986 Oct 20 2010, 07:43 AM

I have 914 Umbrella Covers in stock! As posted before, they are now white in color as that's all I could get.

It looks like the vinyl coated fabric that we've been using for the past 15 years is discontinued. Brad Mayeur got some of the first ones, and they have been outside for much of that time and still keep the car dry. They are kind of stiff and he's replaced the shock cords, but that's a pretty good service life. For your occasional use they'll last a very, very long time, and save your 914 interior from UV and rain.

You can call your order in to my main business (Q Snap) and pay with Visa, MC, or Disc. to 800-867-4712. You can send payment by PayPal to: payment@qsnap.com

Supplies truly are limited. There are nine (9) availble on a first come first served basis.

I've been looking into other materials, but the cost is quite a bit more than the what I've been using, and they aren't WATERPROOF.

I've been on a continual search for more material, but it's not looking good. If you've been thinking about getting one of my covers, DON'T WAIT!

Posted by: brant Oct 20 2010, 07:48 AM

Perry, what is the current price with shipping
and do I have to call, or can I handle the whole thing (my address also) through paypal.

Price is still $125, which includes USPS Priority Mail to conUS addresses. Sorry should have included that in the later post.

Posted by: Brett W Oct 20 2010, 08:15 AM

I would like one at least. You still have them?

As for materials? What about some of the newer Silicone Nylons or or waterproof breathable fabrics used in some of the high performance outdoor gear? There an many different types out there. They may be a little more expensive though.

id be concerned that a water proof cover would trap moisture and that would damage the paint. . I made the mistake of a water proof cover once and sure enough, ruined paint. I'd consider one in a breathable material. one good material from a breathability standpoint is Tyvek. I have car covers of this material and it is good for long term outside storage.

for short term use it is ok to be water proof, but long term it can cuase probelms on the paint and other surfaces

My cover doesn't really cover the paint. It's waterproof because that's what you need, where it needs to be waterproof. This cover won't give your 914 the "wet T shirt" treatment.

yes I looked at the photos, nice product, but it does cover paint, not all paint but some (window frame paint and sail panel (may or may not be painted)) it is likely just fine for short term wet use, but my experince with water proof plastic on teh car is that it can allow moisture to build up and cause paint failure (in my case it was a plastic tarp over the top of the car to prevent targa top leaks, it was all held down my a breathable car cover, had lots of moisture probelms under the plastic tarp.

that is my experince with a non-breathable cover. That is why I suggested tyvek or some breathable material.

the top you have is a very nice idea, just got to be careful with how it is used. if used as a sun shield in the non rainy season i see no probelms, i see a poster advocating its water proofness to help keep water out, it can be a probelm if water does get under it (say it is a installed on a wet car, or wind or humidty allow water under it. but will hurt paint only if left on the car for an extened period of time.

some folks may attempt to use this product as a winter storage water proof top seal, and that could cause probelms. if used as a nice sun shield in teh summer , or removed freqeuntly during the rains then there should be no problem, but for long term outdoor winter storage it may cause problems. one shoudl periodically check under it for moisture build up, if it builds up, then it needs to be periodically dried out.

nice product though when used as a sun shield. or intermitant use in the rain. for long term wet storage i would be hesitant to use it. Dont get me wrong, i think it is great product for reducing sun damage and keeping the cockpit cooler.

Posted by: Steve Oct 20 2010, 04:10 PM

I bought mine mainly to protect the interior from the sun. The cost of a new dash easily pays for this cover. It will also come in handy to keep the rain out from the leaky top. Nice product love it!!!!

Perry, even though you have sold many of these, and they have been field tested and approved by all of those who have them, and no one has ever complained about them or made reports for up-grades from the field, I am pretty sure that my opinion and hypothesis about how it should be constructed is more accurate than your actual experience or the experience of those who have purchased these. Please change the design as previously prescribed to match my theoretical goals that you surely can not be meeting with your current configuration jerkit.gif

I have been able to find some more material, but I don't know how long it will be available. It's the same type as the gray, the gray is NLA.

I have covers in stock at this point, but if you want one you don't want to wait too long. The last batch sold out in two weeks!

Just got mine today! biggrin.gif

Question: I've seen pictures of the bungees hooked onto lots of places, including the fender lip, wheels, and I think I've even seen them clipped to the covers over the longs.

Where's the recommended place to hook them?

Posted by: Kirmizi Jan 20 2011, 01:14 PM

I use the fender lips and my cover hasn't blown off yet.
And believe me, it's undergone some extensive wind-testing here. biggrin.gif

No, no paint chips; just some slight buffing where the bungies extend along the fenders. (This is some serious wind here blink.gif )
You could probably put some rubber or felt on the inside of the hooks to prevent any paint damage.

Look for a new post with updates on new material.

Stepped outside the box and found some other options for materials for my Umbrella Covers

Right now I have four different types of Umbrella Covers on hand ready to ship. I don't have any of the heavy duty gray tarpaulin material covers in stock or in the works at this time.

The first one is the original gray pinpoint convertible top material, that is currently unavailable. These have an extra seam at the back and I'm discounting them at $115 shipped, I have two of these and there's no room for a multiple discount.

There's three different colors of new material, and two different types. There's a khaki color coated cotton (I have 3 of those), tan pinpoint (2 of those) and brown (3 of those). I've attached a picture of the three materials against a piece of white paper.

The khaki is the lightest weight, and softest material I've ever used. From the looks of it, the least durable and UV stable. It would be my personal choice for an occasional use cover that isn't out in the sun a lot.

The tan and brown pinpoint materials are probably a little better than the original pinpoint, and have a nice fabric backing. They are heavier and more durable than the khaki. Pinpoint has kind of a plastic/rubbery feel from the coating. The size of the roll of material makes this more expensive as there's more waste, and the tan was even smaller which is why it's more.

I don't know if you've seen or hear of "Mom's Service Covers', that Garold Shaffer used to sell, but with his permission I now offer those and have two on hand.

Prices are as follows:

Original gray pinpoint: $115 shipped (no discount) - 2 left in stock (last ones)

Khaki: $140 shipped - 3 in stock

Brown pinpoint: $145 shipped - 3 in stock

Tan pinpoint: $150 shipped - 2 in stock

Service covers: $110 shipped - 2 in stock

I can offer $10 off for two or more (not including the original gray) and another $5 off if you send a check.

Also looking for one. Sent a PM and an email a few weeks ago. Glad to see material is on order. Please put me down for one, don't care about the color, only going to use it if surprise rainstorm or traveling. Car normally kept in garage.

I need to replace the bungee cords and clean up the original one I purchased from Perry many years ago. I have the hooks in a plastic baggie.

Until I get around to dealing with the repair, I still have a new one that I ordered a few years ago, still in original the shipping box biggrin.gif

Perry, how can I clean my old one up? ... got a little mold growing on it dry.gif

Up until yesterday I suggested a foaming bathroom cleaner with bleach, but a thread on cleaning interiors said vinegar was better at killing the mold. So If the vinegar isn't effective at cleaning the stains, try foaming bathroom cleaner biggrin.gif
