Dial indicator is parallel with valve stem and should allow me to find full lift.

I just use my drill press with a rod in it and a mag base on my DI.
mark,
can't really pictue that. Can you describe a little better or maybe a sketch or pic?
I'll be tackling this process soon.
thanks,
dr
Ya Mark I can't picture it either.
The thing I made can sit on a mocked up engine with only the bales and valve covers removed. I can measure valve lift as the engine is rotated.
Dave
Put a piece of 3/8" rod in your chuck, tilt the bed or use a jig to make the valve vertical and that will push the valve down. If you tilt the bed you will have to use a piece of angle to use as a stop.
Then put a dial indicator on the retainer using an adjustable magnetic base and measure your coil bind.
Often the retainer will hit the guide before coil bind, so I trim just a bit off the top of my guides.
