Every once in a while, I get asked questions about the differences between the various exhausts that came on stock four-cylinder 914s. I have taken a number of pictures, but cannot seem to find the best ones for the 1.7 and (early) 2.0 exhaust. But this is what I have. I would appreciate it if someone would help out by providing better pics if they have them.


Anyway, let's start out with the 1.7 exchangers. They were also used on the 1974-only 1.8 cars, but it's easiest simply to call them "1.7 exchangers". The ones in this pic are SSIs, but you can (hopefully) see that they lift up off the ground back between the heat exchanger wrapping and the muffler flange.

(And yes, this is one that I'd like a better pic of.)

Next is the pic of a 2.0 exchanger. These were used on the 1973-1974 2.0. Note that they lay flat on the ground all the way back to the muffler flange.

This pic is of one with some of the heater hardware hooked up to it, and doesn't show the flat area that well. I'd like a better pic if someone has one.

Finally, we have the "late" exhaust. This was used on all of the 75-76 914s, 1.8 and 2.0 both. Note that it is a two-piece affair, with one part that bolts to the heads and joins together in a single tube, then another part that bolts to that and has the heat-exchanger wrapping on it. The muffler flange, as a result, is triangular instead of trapezoid-shaped like the earlier ones.

Performance wise, how big of a difference do you find between the 1.7 and 2.0 w/ same muffler?

I'm using the 1.7's on the 2.0. I asked the same question and the reply was I would have more bottom end than top. Prolly due to the smaller diameter of the 1.7 tubing creating a wee bit more back pressure. I'll know in a few days when I get it in clap56.gif

I also have realized that I seem to have the early ssi exchangers. SS except for the flanges. I may have to fix that.

classic all the way...

someone needs to measure diameters of 1.7, 2.0 and SSI pipes... I can probably do the 1.7s this weekend...
