The race car was still under construction at the time.

Root - "Light Ivory" L80E was the
one & only "white" color as
OE on our 914s, although my COA (based on the Kardex) & the earlier 914-6 paint numbers used the 1110 Porsche code for Light Ivory up to 71 or 72 MY (when they consolidated codes on 4's & 6's, & converted 914-6's to the VW color code).
BTW - the 11 is for the Light Ivory & 10 is for the black targa top - so all 914's would've been 1110, while only targa topped 911's & 912's are 1110.
L908 (Grand Prix White?) came along later - post-914 - & is a brighter white. I think Dan used that on his current build.
Porsche & VW both had a series of Whites other than those two codes as well.

Perfect timing for this thread. I just got back from shooting pictures of my latest project. 1973 Light Ivory L80E. Full size pictures and some other angles on my http://www.flickr.com/photos/30504077@N05/.
Is that Brent E's 73 2l (2056) all done Mark?
It looks beautiful!
His is exactly like mine was from the factory & will be going back to in my resto - L80E with #31 Biege interior (#503 Dark Tan loop pile carpets in my case, don't know if his are #504 Tan or 503).
BTW Mark - I'm on a short hiatus from working on my 914 right now - instead working on the Westy, BMW & house projects.
Here's my "L80E" - which I have NEVER seen in white since I first bought her used in 1975! Was Gold Metallic when I saw 11/75 & bought 12/75, has Sahara Beige or a tan primer under the gold that I've found recently in prepping for the resto, I changed to L96K Copper Metallic in 8/76 (Brent's was this too), then to the "pavement camouflage" Antracite (Dark Grey) Metallic in the pic. I knew it was white originally from the floor pans & you can see the longs are still white too.
It
will eventually look like the one McMark has posted when it's done!
BTW - Dan & all - this is a great thread for examples for my resto, & I'd collected a bunch of these & other L80E's to help "desensitize" an avid "blue fan" into acceptance of a white 914 - & now I rather like them!

#5 down also looks like they used VW's "Ivory" or another "off white" instead of true L80E Light Ivory!
The question is always whether it was an owner's choice, or painter's/paint supplier's mistake?
Dan made the choice on his current resto, which is why he named the topic "...white 914s" & not Light Ivory or L80E 914s, but this is not the O&H Forum.
As to white vs. black 914's, then you get into all those brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, silver & purple, etc. types wanting equal time! I vote for separate threads on each color so you can more easily find the color in which you're interested!

I would say for the most part it is the paint code translation by the different paint brands.
Very hard to cross a paint code from an old laquer formula into whatever new 2 pack etc paints.
My MGA is supposed to be Olde English White... looks more like beige or cream... but hey it is a 50 year old paint code.

Solvent based. I will not go water until absolutely necessary. I get the best matches by far from Spies or Glasurit. I try to use Dupont when I can, but for older cars my supplier usually doesn't have a mix code for the paint. What I may start doing is painting in Spies and getting it scanned with the DuPoint scanner so in the future I cna get all of the colors mixed in DuPont, I am just concerned about the accuracy of the scanner. I can save quite a bit on paint by not using Spies. That is important when working with budgets. My nicer cars alwyas get Spies start to finish and you're talking twice the price easily.

Thanx Sir Scotty!
I completely agree regarding Spies (Hecker?) & Glasurit Solvent based!
With all the cost, time & effort required on my 73's resto, I'll go full pop for one of those originals to get the color, texture & finish to be a perfect CW-10.
And apparently at least the Glasurit classic colors still uses lead - at least for Bahia Red as my buddy with the "almost perfect" 71 914/4 found out when ordering paint to get some scratches on his touched-up. It's 100% original paint, but has a few age wear & "ooops" scratches etc. that he's having detailed out as we speak, so he really wanted the original paint.
So we in CA cannot buy anything - nor have shipped to a CA address - that paint & possibly other colors containing lead as well, & possibly ALL colors in solvent based!
Ergo my earlier queries here in the Garage & O&H on paints & body shops who can still shoot in solvent in SoCal vs. taking the shell to AZ etc. for the paint work.

"... a bit naff?" - what is naff????
Porsche+Audi used them prominently in their ads back in the day, to help reinforce the Porsche connection, although none left the factory that way except for 74 LEs/CANAMs - & even they had the decals included but not attached due to the cosmoline used in oceanic shipping to "protect" the bodies from the salt air/damage. Dealers attached the decals in all cases - whether an LE/CANAM or a buyer option/request (unless the owner did so or had it done elsewhere themselves).
However, they may be a PITA to take off later - but at least the color fade shadowing where the decal sat will be minimal on a white car, as opposed to a darker color which tends to fade/oxidize more & be more noticeable.
Go here & you can play with the look of with/without the side stripes as well as other options, thanx to Johannnes of our 914 "French Connection"!
http://www.club914.fr/914blueprint.swf
BTW - he also sells a t-shirt in a 3-color printed white 914 at this link (I got one in black shirt), but check his member vendor thread here as he may still have free shipping or a discount deal going on for members (many other styles there too).

Depending on the MY - 70-73 were positive (1st/L pic) & 74-76 were negative print (2nd/R pic) & they look nicest in black on L80E/white 914s IMHO.
- Porsche+Audi ads above, real L80E/white 914s with "PORSCHE" side stripes below.
I personally like the look & got a set of black positive ones for my 73 2L resto, & will decide later whether to add them or not.
... I prefer the look of positive side stripes - as in the yellow 914 ad & 1st "real" L80E pic, but would do the period correct negative one if mine were a 74-76 914.
Hope this helps with your decision!
Posted by: zymurgist Jul 23 2010, 12:36 PM
YMMV. I prefer the negative stripes as I think they have a less cluttered look about them. Plus the larger letters are more "in your face."

Naff means "over the top" or "bling" I suppose.
I wonder how easy the transfers are to apply and get straight?
They do add a certain flair to the appearance I suppose.

Julian, I think that Jeff Bowlsby has the instructions from the original accessory decals sold by dealers (positive stripes are under accessories of his classic 914 site & negatives are at his 914 CANAM website).
Plus several member vendors here make new repros & have instructions, & you'll want fresh - not 38 year old vinyl. Porsche is now selling the positive decals for the new Boxster Spyder, but I don't know how close that is to the 914 size ones.
PS - you can try out whichever ones you get, by leaving the decals on the backer paper & use doubled up blue painters tape to temporarily affix them to the body, so you can stand back & look. The same can be done with black construction paper cut to size for rockers & sails to decide if you like them black too. I think that the black rockers & sail vinyl lowers the look of our 914s in any color, & the side stripes/decals make it more so when applied properly (use that 914blueprint to compare looks).
You can use blue tape too, to give you a straight alignment line for the decals.

You can also go out & find the appropriate year/color vintage plates off a wreck, swap meet, etc. & petition to have them reassigned to your car by Cal-DMV - so long as they're not still attached to any other car. So for you folks who have CA white plates, you can go back to blue/gold or black/gold (gold = yellow) plates appropriate to your 914's MY, if you can scare up a pair of old unused plates somewhere!
I put a post with the info & links on here a while back for that - FYI to anyone needing to do this:

BTW - I think the Grasshopper was by someone other than Jeff, but part of the story is on the Matsuda Bumblebee 914-2.0-SL post by George, where folks started posting about other LE's, as well as at Jeff's 914 CANAM site & LE Registry.
So - no comments on my "Blueberry" idea??

Dad "on course" circa 1974--a couple of years before he sold his 72.
Dad and me test driving his old 72 shortly afer finding it in 2006--some 29 years later. We bought it back about a week after this picture was taken!

There ya go - "Blueberry Smurf" - my daughter was a little gal & enthralled when those Smurfs were out & first popular!
Actually I was thinking more along the lines of the Marathon Blue or Alaska Blue Metallics for a little extra "sparkle" - as long as we're being way-out silly!
... but I do like the look of that white/blue 911 GT3 RS - closer to the 70-72 Adriatic Blue to my eyes though!

Hey Chris - that is friggin' beautiful!
Was yours one of the OE 75-76 White Leatherette/Brickweave interiors from the factory, or did you change it from another color interior?
... BTW - I know that you recovered the center console in white, since all were black from the factory on any interior color.
I would guess that a factory original L80E/White Interior would be be as rare as hens-teeth! I've seen it in on a few 914's back in the day, & in this Porsche+Audi ad on a blue 914, for those who've never seen a factory white interior, here ya go -
Chris, if you decide to sell this, Jeff Bowlsby is pondering selling his very nice Cremescicle - so maybe a promotion present to yourself this Fall!!??
Kids or no kids - it takes a brave soul to have a white interior & keep it looking that clean!

Drums66 - Did you go to HS in San Diego area? I note that you're about a year older, so Class of `69 (Great year!
) at Coronado HS or ???? HS?
I was Uni HS `70.
Not sure what you mean by "... no kid's(tom t) ....", since I have 2 grown kids & my 914's interior is #31 Beige (#501 Beige Basketweave, #502 Beige Leatherette & #503 Dark Tan carpet) - so it will look like bembry's when I finish the resto - L80E/Beige. In fact, his was also the L96K Copper Metallic in a prior life, same as mine 76-80!
Actually, the 85 BMW 325e "family car"
that I got when my 914 was whacked in 85, had the light Ivory interior, which was almost as bad raising the kids & their sticky hands over everything, but it wasn't as hot as black or brown!
Here's my "
pre-kids" 914's interior - some upholstery repairs to do on the seat & door top bolsters, otherwise in VG-Excl shape! The DAPO/OO removed the Center Console, Fog Lights/Switch & Fuchs 2L wheels - all of which I gotten recently to add back into the car, as well as having CAMP914 recover the dash top, & DSW recover the steering wheel & shift-knob leather/leatherette, & the visors recovered or find some NOS ones.
.
The #503 "Dark Tan" loop pile carpet in the pic below is more of a challenge - since it's NLA, & I cannot find an NOS drivers floor piece anywhere, let alone a NOS full set!
.... anyone have one NOS or VG/Excl used - PM or email me plz!

Tom,
Nice interior (nicer than mine!). I have the tan corduroy inserts on my seats. Unfortunately my COA doesn't say anything about that. I'm not real happy with my COA, other than geting my engine number confirmed as original. I also had to track down parts thanks to DAPO. I scored a beautiful center console out of a really thrashed 914 in a yard in Witchita Falls, TX about 13 years ago. It was a VW yard, and the owner hated the 914, since nobody ever bought parts from it. I got the console for 10 or 15 bucks! Scored the steering wheel the same way, from a place in Phoenix who only wanted to deal with 911s, but had a couple old parts 914s out back. My car has been like a scavenger hunt (2.0 rims, console, steering wheel, original-style Balupunkt, tan backpad and uncut door panels, luggage rack, etc)!

Posted by: SUNAB914 Jul 25 2010, 09:36 AM
The white interior is factory, except center console, I did have that done. She was a garage queen I found in Savannah GA a few years ago. She needed a paint so I did a resto on her, original acrylic light ivory white. Only thing lacking is the original FI, it has a single weber on her, but she runs great with it. I have only two things to complete on her. Can't figure out why fog lights don't work, no power to them. And the suspension bushings are a little squeky. Thanks for the replies!

Brent, that's an outstanding deal - needless to say I payed more & I'm still looking for a Keinzle clock!
Don't do the luggage rack - waste of time with 2 trunks & adds 4 holes for potential future rust problems IMHO!
You may have to keep asking them to look at the actual Kardex & read to you whether it says "#31 Beige leatherette/basketweave" or "#32 Beige leatherette/courdoroy" & then to send you a corrected COA (at no charge to fix it). Call PCNA & ask for Kristin Rochford & explain the problem, & see if she'll check it for you - or email her at: coa@porsche.us
I had to go round & round when she & her mgr. insisted that #31 was black #11, so I had to go to the Customer Service GM to get him to correct after 3 tries. PM or email me if you get to the point where you need his name & email/phone.
This is the codes for 72 MY, but 73 is the same & this is what I sent their boss to get it fixed. -

You can do that on yours too Brent, by turning the adjustment nuts on the a-arm torsion bar ends. 1/2" - 1" lower doesn't negatively affect the steering & suspension, but makes a big diff in better handling. You just need to be careful on ramps, driveways, etc. - esp. with a spoiler.

Har-har TC!
Actually I've seen that 914s in the movies thread, & just cannot believe that you would cop those as your own here!
Actually, I have a good excuse for being a bit slow today, since I was up until 3:30 am visiting with one of my brothers then hour drive to here, then up at 7 am to hook Southwest boarding passes for my flight to Tulsa tomorrow, then pumping java
to get through emails etc. before my afternoon meeting here in Indy, so I'm feeling pretty
about now!
Whew buddy! - long f-ing week traveling, & another to go!
But then I'm clear until Orlando in late Oct., then daughters wedding early Nov.
Cheers!

Hey Brent,
I restrained myself from making a smart a## comment on straightening your rear (lid) post!
You can always get another straight rear deck lid along the way as a clean back-up.
Just keep checking for leaks at the rack mounting holes, cuz the perlon carpet inside will hold the moisture against the trunk floor, then you know hat happens.
They look okay on 914s & other sports cars - I just thing that they're "repetitively redundant" on 914s, what with 2 trunks F & R, & 16 CF of trunk space between them!
No meaningful progress on the 914 (other than snaring some needed parts), as I've been buried with work, travel, home resto & working on the other cars.
This month, May & June I've been bringing my son's 88 Honda up to snuff to drive back to him at Ft. Drum NY, where he's posted with the 10th Mountain Div. now.
... +/- 150k miles, MAACO repaint 4/09 after prep (fresh after repaint in pic), prime & bodywork by my son & I, mechanical & paint chip, etc. refurb items now - after his ssiter "borrowed" it for a couple of years.

Navy????
Yes - I too was my own DAPO & had a DAPO follow the whims of fashion, and had several respray color changes of my 73 L80E!!!!
Mine was factory L80E with Beige interior as of it's 8/31/72 build date, then either the dealer or OO/PO changed it to Gold - which it was when I got it in 12/75 (2nd owner), & they maybe had either Sahara Beige or a Beige tinted primer under that. I changed that to L99K Copper Metallic in 8/76 (too much of the same color with Gold+Beige & paint had some issues), then to the current/last Anthracite/Dark Grey metallic in 5/80 (to rustore some rust bubbles starting & for CHP/Cop "pavement cammy").
She'll go back to L80E in my resto, and should come out looking similar to her "twin" owned by Brent in an earlier post. In fact, a pic of his is my laptop desktop background to keep that goal in mind.
Progression of my factory L80E 8/72 - 12/12 - using examples from other cars, since I don't have any old pix on hand....
^ 8/72 to 197? - Brent E's "twin".
^ 197? to 197? - Steve G's - never saw mine in this color, but I found that beige paint layer between the L80E & Gold recently..
^ 197? to 8/76 - Gold unknown owner - from evil-bay ad I think..
^ 8/76 to 5/80 - Brent E's again - yes, the "twins" crossed color paths twice in their lives!.
^ Current Color since 5/80 - my early 73 914-2.0 "914 S" as she currently sits - still in Anthracite metallic..
^ Back to the Future Color in 20?? - Brent E's yet again - hopefully soon, for the third color path crossing once my resto is done!

Slow to not at all right now Brent!
My wife's 88 Westy is the current project which is getting finished in the paint & body shop right now, then I'll do the interior & some exterior detailing as her anniversary present....a bit late for last Aug.! But at least we got her "new" restored `60 Avion T20 vintage travel trailer (sim. to Airstream) home in time for then!
Then I need to have the 325e reupholstered front seats, steering wheel recovered, new dash top (yes, they crack too) & doors seals. That little project was interrupted when my wife got hit with a fender bender in the Westy, which increased that project from just a refresh by me, into a full windows out repaint & reseal!
Oh, and then there's the ongoing restoration of our 1921 Craftsman Bungalow house....and the honey do list!
And I do have to work some as well....
Hopefully I can get the 914 stripped down & into a paint/body shop for the strip to bare metal, body work & repaint sometime later next year ..... if we don't all die in 11 days!
merry & Happy to you!
Did you ever get your steering wheel recovered Brent?
DSW online in Dallas recovers them for about $185 IIRC (with or without the extra padding, so while yours is under wraps for the winter would be a good time to pull it & ship to them to look all purdy for next Spring/Summer!

Mine are 930 Turbo steel flares. A total of 8 of them. Two per corner. They were put on the car back in its racing days. I'm guessing 15-20 years ago. At this point they are "20 footers". The bondo is lifting and the paint is cracking. I'm working on a GT flare solution right now. The 930's look cool but are not cost effective to repair. In addition, they are lap welded, really crappy. Remember this
was a race car...

I started with a stock '76. A no rust body with a decent repaint (but, as i found out, over a lot of parking lot dings) and some R rear fender damage probably from a blowout. Oh yeah,...and a VERY tired engine that finally just quit!
Since its not original and I'll never be able to afford a real Creamsicle, I've spent nearly a year and even MORE money, rebuilding, repainting, converting bumpers, etc. but I won't feel guilty about driving it for many miles, hopefully in a few more weeks,...or months...

Unless you repainted it to Ivory - then it's actually "Light Ivory" "Hellefenbein" (sp?) L80E/1110, which has been used since the 356s.
Ivory is also around but a bit more of a creamy off-white, but I don't know the paint code for it off-hand.
It looks to be the same L80E over Beige (tan) as mine once was, and will be again!

MY time & $$s have been tied up with the 88 Weswty's resto/refurb since most of last year. It should be done soon though. After I get it back from the body shop hopefully next week ot week after, then I have a few interior things to do as I get time. After it's done, I'll post some pix. ...she'll look like new with a few personalized additions!
I'm still getting needed parts for the 914's resto as time goes along. As Tod914 said in his Froggy FS post, it's getting harder to find new/NOS parts for 914s, so I'm trying to get my needed parts as I can do!
The wife's "new" vintage trailer, ongoing home resto, work & kids on far coast don't help any with 914 work flow either!

Light Ivory. I stand corrected. Original paint until 1993 and redone by a top notch body and paint shop in Portland. When I bought it many years ago it was sporting black PORSCHE stripes on the sides down low and a crest ornament on the front of the car. I had both removed for the repaint. You are correct, it is the tan interior. I've not seen another. Another incredibly lucky find was original Euro driving lights to replace the fog lamps. I have the original US spec parking light lenses but I like the Euro versions much better.

My ongoing project - a Creamsicle that was painted ALL white some 20 years ago. So far have returned the interior back to tan (DAPO had dyed the original black), replaced the entire FI system, replaced original engine after a spun rod bearing, refurbed/updated the front suspension with turbo tie rods, new bushings, etc, and now drive it every day rain or shine.

In addition to mine - Steve/Poorsce914 above (technically a 74 LE Cremescicle), Brent/bembry now in Alexandria/DC has a 73 2L in L80E/Beige, and a few others on here have the Light Ivory/Beige (tan) combo - but not many.
My early-73 2L was previously repainted sahara beige or that color tinted primer then gold before I got it in 12/75 (just 3 years old being first sold new 11/9/72) - which was probably the PO/OO request for a color not in stock back in Fall 72 when the 2.0 "914S" cars were new, scarce & hard to come by in particular colors.
I then proceeded to add to the ix - a respray of Copper Metallic in Aug 76 (Brent's above oddly enough had the same color before quinky-dentally!
), then I did the anthracite/gunmetal grey metallic you see in my avatar in the last repaint in May `80. It was my DD 12/75 - 5/85 and paint colors were more of a fashion choice on 914s back then, but the last/current color was for a "pavement cammy" to save me from any more tickets with that essentially orange metallic (copper) I did before.
I did the resprays to deal with early rust bubble problems topside on mine, which had shown up within the 1st 3 years according to the first owner from whom I purchased it, explaining at least one of the tan or gold resprays by the dealer to address the rust while it was still under the 24k mi warranty!
Yours is a great looking example of Light Ivory & Beige BTW!
... your pix just added to my L80E reference file!
