This may be a stupid question...however my dad always said the only stupid questions are the ones not asked.
I am converting to a 2.7 six and I wanted to dress up the front compartment a little and add a removable felt covered board above the gas tank to hide the hoses and water bottle etc. I would have a cut out for the filler and the brake. It would be a lot easier to make it fit if I didn't have the expansion tank in place.
What do you guys think.

I think you need some sort of expansion tank or a way to vent the gas tank that does not fill the cab with gas fumes. Dont forget the charcoal canister is also part of the system. It really has nothing to do with the engine that is installed.

Is it even a good idea? Or by closing off this area will I make the chance of a gas fume issue an even bigger issue.

From experience... put the expansion tank on, and put the charcoal canister on. I left them off, and the gas smell inside the car was overwhelming. And it got worse when it was hot.

Plus, hooking them up costs nothing.. not even horsepower. And it helps the environment.

There's no good reason not to use the expansion tank and charcoal canister. Collecting fuel vapors is not a bad thing.

If it bothers you that bad, mount it in the engine compartment like the later cars

It doesn't bother me, I think it is a good thing to have for the environment. I was just thinking(being lazy) about not having to cut the angles for the board to fit well around the expansion tank and look professional.
Thanks for the input I think I will just take my time and do it "right" and make it look good with the expansion tank in place.


By the way I was messing around with my GPS and found it will fit in the ash tray when closed ( a little modification on the tray). I need to install a stronger spring so it will open up better when i pull it open.

You can mount them to the left of the brake filler or in the engine compartment! I have seen them in 3 different places! So if it is in the way, move it!

It looks like they removed the expansion tank from around the filler.
I looked at my car again and the charcoal canister is in the engine bay.
the small tank that only had a small(5mm) hose that went out to the bottom of the car that surrounds the gas filler neck area is what I was thinking about removeing for a cleaner look when I place the board in that area.
In the picture it looks like the gas filler neck is still in tack but the expansion tank has been removed, hard to see the details completely.

How much do you like the smell of gas?

I removed mine including the charcoal canister etc. and i wouldn't do that again. I always have fuel smell in the car when the tank is above 1/2.


Like others have said above, you could relocate it ...

After completing the conversion from carbs back to stock FI, I made sure to install the charcoal can and related lines etc. since the PO just had the vent tube sitting open to the air under the car.

I noticed right away, no more smell of gas in the garage.

NICE!

I'd vote for keeping it all hooked up like it should be.

It's embarassing when your car, any car stinks of anything.

You didn't say if you are keeping the CIS or going to carbs. If you go with carbs, you don't need the evaportion control system. Sixes sold in California had to have it, but the other 47 states and Rest of World did not. The 47 state /6 does not/never had the charcoal canister. However, the expansion tank vents to the atmosphere via a "Y" connection to the tank over-fill hose and vents below the car. You can remove the expansion tank and vent from the filler neck to the "Y" connection and you will have a clean top for your carpet. Just don't spill gas on it.
I have never figured out why the expansion tank was installed in non-Cali sixes since it vents to the atmosphere anyway just like the carbs do. And, I have never had a problem with vapors.

Jflash914 that looks very nice and in line with what I was thinking of doing.
What did you use and do you have any tips ?
I was thinking about using 1/4 MDF and felt to match the felt in the trunk. Iwould like to use one piece but I think I may have to use two separate pieces to fit well.
I will be covering the rest of the trunk with felt like Porsche did with the 916.

To answer the other question I will be keeping the CIS.

With no spare, mine looks positively cavernous (I'm sure I could fit a few dead zombies in there).

And to stay on topic, I do get a gas smell (from the car - not me!), but only on sharp left turns. Therefore I take three rights to go left.
