I have a little while left in the university and I want out as soon as possible. I am looking for a degree in something that will get me a generic job for a couple of years so I can get the money to do my own thing. Kinda looking for options this summer. May try and get on with a race team again or go to Porsche school. Options are there. Thanks for all the replies.

Some very cool occupations here. I also notice a lot of brainpower. So what made us all so dumb as to fall in love with these little square bastard cars?

What do I do/have I done? Let's see, where do I start?

The past:
Did a little duty during "the conflict" in the Navy.
DJ (radio & live), had my own DJ company in the 70's & 80's (made a few bucks outta disco).
Professional Songwriter (taught & wrote articles for local mags on How-To).
Music engineer (studio & live).
Producer for a few local bands.
Built a few guitars.

Currently:
Public Safety Dispatcher for Security at Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument (Hearst Castle) for the last 18 years.
Co-Owner, Mesa Karaoke (don't laugh, it's a kick in the ass, and supports my 914 habit).
Resident "gopher" for West Coast Garage in Santa Maria a few days a week.
The rest of the time I do my best to keep Marcie happy (my most important job).

I guess I'm another one of the computer geek types amongst us. Started programming and using 'puters about 25 years ago. That was age 13/14 or so (holy crap, where did all those years go? smoke.gif )

I squeeked-by with one of those degrees with too many words that basically just means I took waaaay too many math courses. What the hell was I thinking? icon8.gif

Since then I have mainly been working in the family software biz, ultimately becoming CEO i.e. chief stress-case last year headbang.gif It is a tiny niche business. We build enterprise apps for large high-tech manufacturers, with a lot of aerospace biz at this point. The apps keep track of all of the "stuff" in the infrastructure of the company - the tooling, computers, test equipment, lab instruments, and so forth used to build and QA their products. Basically every major US-built product that flies, goes into space, or "blows-up shit" is supported in some way behind the scenes by our apps.

It's relatively enjoyable, challenging, and (usually) provides a decent amount of free time and money to enjoy family life and hobbies. Thank God for the Internet as my travel has been reduced dramatically due to email, ftp, and WebEx... biz travel sux...

6 years in the coast guard stationed up in SF bay area. I was an avionics technician and flew search and rescue from point conception to morro bay and in to Tahoe if necessary. I was one of the few Coasties that got to go to the sand box (middle east). Left that awesome gig to go to college (current occupation). Finishing up my BA in psychology, with the addition of my pre med classes. As a matter of fact, I should be studying for my MCAT this Sat, but I think my brain is full. I graduated from Home Depots cashier college as well when I first got a civilian job. I am on my way to becoming an orthopedic surgeon....well lets see what kind of MCAT score I get. <_<

Got my B.S. in Graphics Communication Technology (ie printing industry management) from Arizona State University. Actually worked in printing for about 2 1/2 years in Torrance, CA before I made a u-turn and headed back to Arizona.

Worked as maintenance man at Bible Conference Center for about 3 months, then they made me general manager for the next 3 years. Got into computers there with an Osborne One. The next gig took advantage of my experience in production scheduling (for R.R. Donneley & Sons printing) and my computer experience - I got to try and computerize the scheduling for a manufacturing plant. That turned into a computer support gig for the local university for 12 1/2 years where I did just about everything from changin hard drives, to teaching database classes and doing programming.

Current gig is being the whole IT department for the Museum of Northern Arizona (www.musnaz.org). I do everything from manage the network to maintaining the web page. It's more fun than anything I've ever done for a living before, as well as being more challenging.

Even more fun is my other "job" - I get to do the business part of my wife's quilting business - www.tulpenwerk.com. And I get to watch her create wonderful quilts for people.

Man, I was out in the garage actually working on my car and I missed this entire thread...

I just graduated with my MS degree in Chemical Engineering from UT Austin. I now live in the Bay Area and work for Intel making the processors that run your computers (P4's). I make little, tiny copper metal lines that are ~100nm wide (~1/1000th of a human hair)...nanotechnology. Actually, when I was in grad school I made some 13nm features...that is about 50 atoms across.

This is a picture of some features I printed in Grad school...they are about 40 nanometers wide. The little specs on the surface are actual Gold particules that we sputter on the surface to allow us to look at them in the scanning electron microscope. The outside lines are falling over due to Vander Waals forces...moisture trapped in between the lines cause the lines to fall over after being taken out of the liquid nitrogen when we cleave the wafers. Anyway, I have a bunch of cool pictures of transistors and stuff if anyone is interested in seeing how your computer works...

Well, foremost is my business of providing upgrades for these little cars. cool.gif

I started into the automotive hobby when I was 13, and that culminated in owning a shop, "Perrformance Auto Crafters," where I had clients with all kinds of unusual cars and built engines, did conversions of all sorts, maintained custom and classic cars, performed full restorations, and built/upgraded street rods.

I am an Aerospace Engineer and I have been a structural stress analyst, flight test engineer, aerodynamic stability and control engineer; I have worked on flight controls and control laws of digital flight control systems.

I do integration (systems engineering) on the world's most advanced fighter aircraft.

I am a mechanical engineer with specialty in composite fabrication and product development. Been doing this for 15 years. Got my start designing products and machines for the sporting goods industry. Designed and built everything from golf clubs to bicycle forks to climing gear... All this was of carbon fiber and fiberglass. Now I design products for the military. The company I currently work for is a r&d shop for the department of defense.

Mechanical engineer. Started out doing building systems design such as HVAC, plumbing, system piping, etc. and gradually moved into the fire protection area. Now I do fire protection systems and building code analysis full time. Mechanical engineering has been okay, but as TimT said, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

Gosh, I guess doing a honey-dew list made me miss out on the fun...

At any rate, thanks, Rusty, for your service.

As for me, after a stint in the Army, I was a store assistant manager, then lab technician testing toothpaste additives, then oilfield roustabout, back to lab technician for an automotive catalyst company, then lab supervisor, then MBA and Manufacturing systems designer for the same catalyst company. Ok, Mechanical engineer, Arizona State....by way of automotive trade school.....

1st job was plastics process engineer for a large rocket manufacture, in the component manufacturing shop....lots of plastics fabrication, molding, composite layup....lots of metal machining...Then we would test and blow things up....cool job, no pay....but I was a rocket scientist!!

2nd job, plant engineer for Sherwin-Williams....cool job, stinky and dirty...lots of construction and conveyer design....

3rd job..Plant engineer for Stonyfield farm Yogurt...I ran maintenance, gave it up, all capital projects and technical support for the equipment in the plant...
Not bad, but "small company" views on how to spend and automate..

Now I’m an engine builder for the VW/Porsche crowd. I used to do full restos on VW bugs etc., but it was too much work and bug owners are cheap. Plus I’m a full-time dad when the wife is at work. We also do a bit of real estate speculation.

Before that I owned a high-end cabinet shop, sold it and got into bugs by accident while thinking about what to do next. I have my papers in cabinet making.

I also have a degree in film and video production, but I found out I’m much better at kicking ass than kissing it.

Once my young lad is in grade 1 (3 more years), I will make the big decision, continue on with the engines or go back to cabinets and building custom homes on spec.
I love playing with engines, but the other would be at least a 40k/yr raise, so it will most likely win.

Basically, They put me in charge of a squadron of folks, about 300 people. I track training statistics, provide educational direction/advice, enforce training standards, and ensure they are met in a timely manner, teach classes to supervisors on how to be "better" supervisors, and more effectively train young troops.

Basically.... I'm a glorified High School guidance counselor.

In my spare time however..... I've mastered the art of finding the WACKIEST, CRAZIEST, PSYCHOEST girlfriends on the planet.....

attended San Diego State as a journalism major while working at a small publishing house (weekly newspapers and such). got involved in computer typesetting, became a paid professional programmer at the dawn of microprocessors, decided school was interfering with my education and bailed after 2 years. fast-forward 10 years in the computer engineering trenches (with a bit of time off to pursue graphic design and commercial photography) i went back and completed a BS in Computer Science. designed a bunch of simulation software (aircraft, oil rigs...) then went off to Lost Angeles to design avionics for McDougal-Dongless, followed by 5 years of software design consulting (including some cool automated test equipment for Litton Aeronautic). moved to the Sierra to do software design after the LA economy crashed, along with my house, in the Northridge earthquake. did that for a while, tired of working for idiots, set out to do airbrush car art, graphic design, and commercial photography. eventually found my way East where my day job is once again software design (vehicle diagnostic systems for European cars) and i try to pursue graphic art on a time-available basis. i edit my PCA Region's newsletter and try to make my 911 better while i work out just what to do with the 914.6 and 356.

During this time, I also did Contract Engineering/Consulting for companies such as Boeing, Tyco, Hamilton-Sundstrand, Lear and Emerson Electric. Really liked the contracting jobs; was able to travel and work in Boston, MA area, Hartford, CT area and Pureto Rico.

I also have roughly twelve years of service in the Wisconsin National Guard. Last duty assignment was as an AeroScout

By day I am an electrical engineer at an aerospace company, which is at this point very boring. I've been here for a year and a half now since finishing my masters in EE. So far this place hasn't engaged my brain, so I'm really looking for something new. In grad school I was working on RF power amplifiers, very similar to what Jkeyzer was doing. We got our BS's together at UC San Diego.

By night I am a 914 restorer and I work on microwave and millimeterwave electronics in my home lab. I think my neighbors believe I'm some kind of mad scientist. My wife does smile.gif

The Harley is a great cruising police bike, but you cant do near what you can with a Bimmer. The Bimmer is just a great all around bike.

Stealing a hint from Gint's post. I'm a reluctant WinNT/Win2k Level II Server Support Engineer for the Managed Hosting division of Cincinnati Bell (yes in Cincinnati). Looking to get out of the 24x7x365xMultipleClients support thing and work for 1 client full time. (PM me if you're hiring techs in my area, I'm looking).

I started out in 1989 doing component level repair on old Western Electric equipment that was produced in the 60's and 70's. Then got into desktop support and have now been doing server support and occasional application integration for 10 years now for various employers.

Recently started messing with Linux and I like it a lot. http://aircooled.dyndns.org is a 486 120mhz w/16mb running OpenBSD in my kitchen when the IP is updated properly. Yea, a 486. Did I mention that I kinda like this Linux thing. I'm looking to do more with Linux (RedHat, Fedora, Suse and OpenBSD).

Other endeavors include: Licensed Real Estate Agent in KY. I'm a partner in a vinyl sign business that is growing beyond my ability to keep up. 914 junkie. ....and last but not least daddy of 3 and husband of 1. :-)

hay Chris.
LOL I don't know what I got myself into.

The shop does sooo much work the last two superintendants left the position due to burn-out. $500,000 a month is a lot of pump repairs.

maybe I'm dreamin but my plans are to develop systems and procedures so the shop runs itself. I've done it before but on a smaller scale. It's waaay too hands on now. I hate micro-managers.
For the first six months I'll be buried, after that the investments should start paying off. Then it'll be time to start thinking about another crazy porsche project. Any suggestions?

The new job is only 15 miles from home, I love not having to sit on the freeway for 75 minutes to get home in the eventing.

I took four weeks off between jobs and spent time getting to know the kids again, best thing I've ever done. wub.gif

Hey Sang, that sounds like a "fun" job but is it -really- ???

I work and live, respectively, right around the corner from Activision and THQ. I know that it is damn hard to get jobs there due to the perceived fun-factor and have also heard that the pay is not fantastic for same reason.

Any insight would be appreciated as those two companies are resume targets if my current gig goes in the tank!

Oh Geoff, why did you have to go and open Pandora's Rant?

Similar to what Chris just said, I have one of those jobs that sounds cool but isn't all that. What it comes down to is I'm a software engineer. In my experience it doesn't matter what the end product is (Mars rover, game console, coffee maker), programming is a lot of boredom and frustration with brief spurts of gratification maybe 2 or 3 times a year. The only thing worse than having to use crappy software is having to write it so it fits into someone's abortion of an architecture. Compound this with the Dilbert management style of my present company and it really starts to wear on you after a while. Corporate culture doesn't fit with me too well anyway. I have issues with authority figures Yack.gif

Yeah I know, if it were supposed to be fun they wouldn't call it 'work'. My problem is I'm stupid enough to want to be happy. It will actually be good if I can squeak out a new career in the next 2-3 years since all the software jobs are going overseas anyway. Believe it. It may not go smoothly at first but management is getting qualified engineers for 1/10th your pay ($8k - $15k a year in India and China). They will keep at it until they make it work.

Ok, enough of whiny crybaby. I'm going to watch Letterman.

Dude, you're funny. You're also correct. What do you want to be when you grow up? I still haven't decided.

Oh, ok...one of those jobs. I have a 914 friend who did what you do, made a ton of money and is now a part time actor, movie editor, volleyball player. You just need to get lucky and find the "right job at the right time". He is one happy dude now days, even has a girlfriend.
