914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GoPro CAMERA GROUP BUY ROUND TWO!

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Sep 8 2010, 10:38 PM

Okay, since I don't have enough time to do all that I am already doing, I have decided to do some more. I have been in contact with a supplier of GoPro video cameras. The GoPro HD sales for 299.00 on the GoPro website with accessories for attaching it to your car, helmet, surfboard or whatever. I have worked a deal with a vendor to save us some money. I should have final price tomorrow but for now we would be looking at 230.00 - 235.00 plus shipping which should be about 5 - 7 dollars in the lower 48. This is if I can get at least 10 to 15 of these sold. I will also be advertising this to the SCCA people I race with so that should help. Hoping to get at least 25 sold but if we reach 50 I have been promised extra goodies such as t-shirts and stuff. I will have the final details tomorrow. If you are interested in this please post here so I know whether ot not to mess with it. Some of the Dragon video was shot with these cameras if you need something to look at. They also have videos to view on their website. Here is a link to the GoPro site. http://www.goprocamera.com/ This is great for all you autoXers and anyone else that lives to drive, ride, fly, ski or anything else. Waterproof to 180ft so works even in the rain.

I'll start setting some money aside right now, provided we can get it done before the Dragon run. I WILL have one by then smile.gif

I'm in. Let me know how much to sent, when to send it, and where to send it.

Posted by: cary Sep 9 2010, 07:02 AM

I'm in. I've looking at them too. The extra $60 discount pushed me over the edge.
I'll wait for the time and place for the $$$$.

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Sep 9 2010, 01:40 PM

Sounds good guys, waiting on a phone call now for final pricing, hoping to get it even lower with enough units sold.

group buy is a great idea, Time to tell my 914 friends to get in on this.

BTW, it is a great tool for videoing small children too. As it has no screen they lose interest in it and will accept it being around them instead of the constant struggle to keep them from behind the camera that I usually have.

Hopefully you will be able to join in. The good part about this group buy is it is very attainable with a minimum number of 10 to get it going.

I am in for one. I almost bought one several times at $300.

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Sep 10 2010, 07:50 PM

Okay folks, talked to the supplier today. Here is the deal if you want one of these sweet cameras....237.50 shipped to your front door! That's not a bad deal. Wish I would have waited as I paid more a few weeks ago myself. Seriously considering another one so I can shoot front and back at the same time.

I've been wanting one of these for a while now and this seems like an awesome deal. I don't know if the funds will allow it though... I'm gunna have to think about it.

Put me down for two. I may be in for three but need to talk to someone first. Two for sure though piratenanner.gif

Posted by: Jakeodoule Sep 11 2010, 06:14 PM

I have the wide angle gopro camera.
I have found it to be the biggest POS electronic device I have ever used.
It only works 25% of the time. other times it shuts off by itself, records bad video, eats batteries like you would not believe. Does not fit the waterproof case correctly, rattles around in the case and the battery cover comes loose. Then the batteries disconnect. Any video is lost when batteries go dead or come loose. Everytime I go to use it, I get so frustrated I want to smash it. does not work at all on regular batteries. barley works on nicads. Works best on Lithium batteries that are not cheap and it rips thru 2 AA in an hour.

I have heard they have fixed these problems on the new HD one by having a rechargeable built in Lithium pack. But they won't do anything about my $250 purchase. They just say tough luck. so they will not be getting any more of my money..... bootyshake.gif

Not really as far as I know. I'm sure they won't extend that price to me forever but I'd like to get it moving. I figure if I can get at least 10, then we can move on it. If not ten in a few days, we will roll anyway.

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Sep 12 2010, 08:56 PM

I'm out. Have to deal with a pay decrease until Jan 1, 2011. sad.gif

Sorry to hear that Zach but completely understand. Just got back money they cut from us 6 months ago.

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Sep 13 2010, 09:18 PM

Okay, looks like we have request for 7 units so far. Close enough for me to get it rolling. I may buy another which will make it 8 and maybe we can get a couple more buyers in the next couple of days. If you guys want to start sending money we will make this happen. You can mail me a check or do paypal. If you use paypal you will HAVE to add in the paypal fees as they have already threatened to shut me down due to all the gift transactions on the tail lenes group buy. Total cost including shipping is $237.50. This does NOT include paypal fees. Checks to be made payable to me as I will be sending one lump payment to the supplier. Thanks to all who are helping make this possible for each other.

Stopped by the credit union over lunch, to drop off a couple checks for my wife. Yes, we still use paper forms of commerce in WI. I picked a certified check for ya, figured its easy to do while I'm there and there will be no holds on it as if I sent you a WI personal check. I'll get it in the mail tonight, and if anyone else I mentioned this to wants one, they can pay you directly.

BTW, it is a great tool for videoing small children too. As it has no screen they lose interest in it and will accept it being around them instead of the constant struggle to keep them from behind the camera that I usually have.

does anybody have experience with the sound quality on this unit?
(Eric or anyone)

I want to find something with a little bit of sound quality or at least better than the static you sometimes find on in-car footage.

Yes, agreed. Wind is your enemy here. Now, the GoPro guidance says to use the sealed back door with wind over 100mph, but I'd say use it over 50mph.

The problem with my in car mounting location is that it is right behind/between the seats and as I am required to run DE with the windows down, the wind is really strong there. The clip above is with the sealed back door.

So, as the GoPRO has no external input for a microphone, that is as good as it gets for that location. Moving it to a calmer location would be a good bet

Now, if I were trying to get the best possible output, I'd run two cameras;
1. Where you can see everything you want
2. out of the wind, near the engine

Then just use the second camera sound for the first camera.

Make sense?

no offense..
but the sound is not so great is it...
and to buy 2 camera's just for sound?

we don't have windows (race car)
hmmm... I'm wondering if there is something out there with an external mic.

I took a chance and ordered before I got your check, had you covered. Luckily when I got home from work the dough was in the box. Soon as I get these in I plan to have them all sent out same or next day.

According to the tracking number I should have the cameras Thursday. I will do my best to getthem out Friday or Saturday at the latest.

I didn't find them that cheap. Cheapest I found was 245.00 which is what I paid. I am selling these for 225.00 also but it cost me 10.20 to ship them so the 2 bucks I make on them is gone with gas to post office & my time to package them up.

Bummer sad.gif

I have wondered how secure the mounts are. Did the adhesive let go or did the camera come loose from the mount?

Posted by: scotty b Oct 6 2010, 06:10 PM

Suction cup let go. My guess is either there was someting on the panel that didn't allow the full grip, or I failed to notice the suctioion cup was over the holes for the badge. That would allow air to get underneath it and eventually work it's way off. confused24.gif I'm fairly certain it was not an equipment failure as I had it almost at 100 on monday wihtout any issues. I also F-ed up again and only got a single picture. I think when I am " starting " the recording I am somehow changing the command feature from vidoe to single shot confused24.gif This was my starting point rolleyes.gif

You may be in luck as far as repairs go. From their web site:

Replacement housings and lens kits are available, making repairs or refurbishing your HD HERO camera affordable and convenient.

AND

tough enough to take a spin across the asphalt, GoPros are built to take a beating. Replacement lens kits are also available for $20, so there’s little worry of scratching the tempered glass lens while going for glory. Trash the housing in a massive crash? Replacements are available for $40.

Amazingly I don't see a single scratch on the casing, and the camera itself only has bang marks on the corners, the lens appears to be fine smile.gif I'm concerned about the internals though. I don;t knw how tought they are, but it bounced off of my windshield and I watched itr in the rearview as it hit the ground, exploded, and parts went flying sad.gif 3 of the corners look like this one. The pic is my attempt at starting the video feed dry.gif

Scotty, the man said contact the number on the website and they should hook you up. Any problems let me know and I will harrass them til we get you a new one. poke.gif

O.k., so I went back to the scene and spent around 20 min looking for the battery and found it. Put it in the camera and everything came on and seems fine.

NOW dry.gif What the hell program are you guys using to download and watch the video ?? I have tried Windows media player and Quicktime and both give me a message that it cannot open because it is " not a file quicktime ( windows ) understands " confused24.gif What gives ???

Just uploaded this one from the Performance Driving School I went to this weekend. I cut it off a bit, and reduced the quality to get it up.

You need an MP4 codec; Quicktime or VLC Player both work well.

I have quicktine and even made certain it was up toi date yet I still get that message. When I get home tonight I'll try to load it into photoshop first. That worked on my first attempt before the " incident " unsure.gif I also downloaded final media player last night and it wouldn't pley it either. Didn't give me any message though, just acted like I never gave it a play command

Have you tried playing the video straight from the camera without downloading it?

I hope you guys have better luck with yours than I've had with mine.

I bought one before the start of the 2010 race season. When it actually
records the video and audio are great! But we never know what to expect from the damn thing. Sometimes it will record a whole race or qualifying session and other times it will just stop after 15 seconds or so.

We have tried different batteries, keeping it out of the sun until right before the session starts, different brand cards, we used the mounts that it came with and when viewing the video that actually worked we can see that vibration is not an issue.

It failed to record every moment of every session of this past weekends quailfying and race. After heated on track action we really wanted to get a look at the vid, but nothing! I really had to contain myself to keep from stomping on the stupid thing. I believe I'm done with the GoPro.
I hope it works better for you guys. If any of you have the same issue and figure it out, please share what you learned.

I would suggest contacting GoPro, they may exchange it for you. They do come with a warranty. I have had no trouble out of mine except whe I set it wrong. Then again I have not used mine nearly as much as you have yours. Did you get the GoPro HD Hero or are you using the cheaper non HD version? I have contact infor for one of the GoPro reps if you would like it, maybe he can fix you up.

Thanks! I think I'll take you up on that! I kept my composure and didn't smash the thing when I realized it didn't record any of the race Sunday.
I'll send it to the GoPro folks if they'll look at it for me.

It is not the HD version, but I was very happy with the vid & audio quality...when it worked!

No mo GoPro! Well, at least until round three!

Posted by: scotty b Oct 13 2010, 03:00 PM

I think I got it smile.gif I tried recording again today and when I downloaded the video I noticed the icon was different. The first video that would never play showed a piece of broken film, where as the new video shows a piece of whole film. I guess the first video was somehow corrupted, thus quicktime telling me it couldn't recognize it. Anyway quicktime played this clip just finme. I have run into an additionnal issue, where after I downloadedthe video today I couldn't get the camera to turn back on. I ended up removing and reinstalling the battery and it came right back on confused24.gif Now to try for the upload before leaving for die dragon smile.gif

Posted by: campbellcj Oct 13 2010, 03:27 PM

Glad you got that sorted out.

I like the camera overall but the user interface is about as bad (unfriendly and arcane) as they come. I missed recording a session recently because I reached back to hit the record button, with helmet and gloves on, and either didn't press it hard enough or who knows what. With my clunky old DV camcorder I had a remote control and it made a racket when recording started, which made this scenario easier. Of course its video quality sucked in comparison though.

I also saw it at Costco last night for $179.00, but its the helmet pro. Which means you would have to buy the suction cup and other mounts seperately that come with the Motorsports Hero HD. It would put the cost around the same as this group buy.

FYI, I have been cramming my camera and ancillaries back into the original box enough that it finally gave up on me. I went to Target this morning to find a suitable storage / transport container.

What I found was the EMBARK single lunch cooler. All of the pieces fit in it perfectly without having to dissasemble the camera, the zipperd pouch on the front is the exact size of the paperwork for the camera and it is padded smile.gif all for 9 bucks first.gif Look around the camping equipment, there was a shelf of various lunch coolers

I forgot to mention the Cosco special is only 720p, its not 1080p... You get what you pay for!!

The Costco one is not the same--and it's not even a good deal, if you go to GoPro.com they list it there for $179--you will see that it's not the same as the other one--cant do 1080 HD...
