Posted by: carr914 Sep 9 2010, 06:10 PM

So I bought another 914 ( I think this makes #25) to make into a Track/Auto-X car.

The Transport company told me today that the car will be picked up on 9-11 and delivered on 9-14. How Cool is that? I guess it was destiny that I will be converting this car to a -6.

Pictures on Tuesday, our Holiday

I'm an equal opportunity buyer - I've gotten cars from New Jersey, New York wub.gif , Washington, California, Alabama, Georgia, Sweden, Germany, Etc

It's here - a day late ( no 9-14 sad.gif ), Thanks a lot to Wayne 1234 for a great deal. Wayne put a lot of work into this car ( see his " my solid car ain't so solid" thread)

I will be turning this car into a track car - I was turned on to it because it is now so solid. Might be a tad heavy, but I'm confident in my driving abilities.

I will be calling this " RumbleBee" because of it's Yellow/Black theme plus anyone that knows me, nows I put Mega-Phones on my car for a mid-70's ROAR

Coming on the trailer this morning

It Does - Wayne converted the fog-lights to Parking Light/ Turn-Signal - Very Cool

Very cool. What motor are you going to put in it? What else is on the upgrade list?

Posted by: carr914 Sep 15 2010, 07:23 PM

I've done Interior work in the past, So I tore into it today. Took the seats out (Fairly Good Condition - Will do Houndstooth Inserts as I have a bunch of Material), Put 2 Layers of RamMat, 1 layer of 1/4 inch foam, a layer of Dark Black Perlon. I then reattached the center section of the back-pad with Velcro. For some reason the center section sitting in the Sun created it's own Ghost-Flames - Weird

That makes 4. It will be in Demand after this build. Tough to ship - being only two piece - very easy to install though.

My - To Do List for the day

Repair shifter - it has an old school short shift that the epoxy broke loose - Check

Mount Black Bumpers w/ best bumper tops I had, also RennenMetal front aux Fog mounts - Check

This actually took me longer than expected - there was only one dog-bone used on the previous bumpers and it took me an hour to locate my bag o 20 dog-bones & bolts headbang.gif

Go to DMV, Title & Register the car - Had to go twice, the real cute girl already cutomers, so I had to do with the Pikers hissyfit.gif

Assorted other stuff.

Mounted 1 Mirror
Mounted the P/S Seat Belt on the D/S temp as the D/S Belt mech spring was shot
Mounted the Rear Center reflector - I hate these things, but I didn't want to weld up the holes. I drimel'd a hole in the relector & remounted a lock mechanism, getting rid of the electro-buzzer

Got to go pick up the 2.8 Twin-Plug RSR motor tomorrow

Posted by: carr914 Sep 17 2010, 07:26 AM

I kept the Gotti's, Sold them with my 74 Carrera, bought them back & sold them again - the 10"s wouldn't fit anything I had. I have 2 sets of 9"s with Tires - BBS & Fuchs

On the Beck - the tire was petrified, no valve stem and the sidewalls were like a rock

Great carbon cannondale rush in the background!

Posted by: carr914 Sep 23 2010, 07:52 PM

The CannonDale is my Engine Guys Trail-Rider - Pretty Cool bike

This is the perfect example of the car Newbies should Buy. Solid as a Rock. Most New Guys think if they buy a $500 car they can fix it. Then it sits on JackStands til they give it away.

This was an under $5K car delivered, I've sold off a lot of what I didn't want. Now it is good platform for what I want to do

Posted by: JimmyG Sep 25 2010, 08:39 AM

That is going to be a great car when you get finished!
Your right about the newbies.although I think they need to stick with the 4 banger. Pretty intense doing the conversion for a fist timer.
I will not have my car together for Petit Le Mans this year. Hopefully next year. Will enjoy watching your progress!

Jimmy

Posted by: carr914 Sep 25 2010, 12:16 PM

Jimmy, that was my intention for the newbies - buy a car like this and drive the snot out of it vs buying a $1500-2000 car that "needs a little fixing up" that turns into a $8000 car overnight

I bought it for the value - the value it has for me as a super solid that I can turn into a track car quickly

And the value of the parts I knew I could sell (motor, carbs, both gone, Center Console, suspension & brakes, wheels, etc)

You could probably sell that dash as having a rare antiqued finish. happy11.gif

Too late. the Keith Richards dash is in the trash and awaiting pickup

Posted by: carr914 Sep 28 2010, 03:46 PM

Today, I buttoned the dash back together and put the Interior TargaBar trim in. Someone had installed the rear Targa latches on the wrong sides - it took me a few minutes to figure out why things were not fitting

Attached Image

Posted by: carr914 Sep 28 2010, 03:52 PM

I also made a Padded Headliner for the Targa Top. If you noticed the Perlon Backpad I put in, it is Jet Black. My source of Perlon ( a custom crate maker for Rock Bands) switched from the tradition 3 tone grey to Black so that's what I'm using. So I glued 1/8" Foam to the inside of the top and then a piece of the Black Perlon. I think it looks very good in this car.

Attached Image

Posted by: Root_Werks Sep 28 2010, 04:37 PM

That really looks good!

Anything to help keep it quiet inside the 914.

Sigh, I need to do another steel roof car.

My current 914 is actually really tight and has very little cowel shake, but you can still hear the top squeak if you're on the right road.

Annoying.

Posted by: carr914 Sep 28 2010, 05:04 PM

Dan, next time the Steel-Roof becomes available, we should go in halves on it. That way we'll never get rid of it. You can have it in the summer & I'll take it in the Winter (my summer)

Wow, you have been busy. I'm very glad you are happy with the car. But it was for a very worthy cause drooley.gif That 6 is gonna be sweet. I am so glad you are gonna drive it, and give her some more pep instead of letting her sit. It was a bitter sweet seeing her get trucked away, literally I had blood sweat and tears into that car(sorry for the extra DNA samples) biggrin.gif . I'm sure you could tell since I expressed my concerns over the securing of the car on the trailer by the driver. I enjoyed the journey I took with this car. And I can see your renewed enthusiasm for the car, and that makes me confident and happy that it went to a good home.

I did get to see & talk to Chuck Beck and his son Randy this weekend. The earlier picture of Randy's racecar is not an actual Beck kit, but something he made.

Chuck is a great guy - besides the 914 kit, he is most famous for his Beck 550 and the Beck 904 kits. What most people don't know is he made the Ford Shogun - mid-engine SHO motor in a Fiesta. Very few built, but one is in Jay Leno's collection and is one of Jay's favorite cars

It's not a requirement. But on a six if/when you throw a belt or have a plastic dry-cleaning bag rolled up under the belt, you'll spend a lot of time and bust knuckles without easy access.

I've seen plenty of -6 owners who put a belt on the old fashion way (not removing the engine to do it) getting the shims cockeyed, an not getting the belt on with the right tension... or even on tightly. In the latter case the new belt comes off while you're driving.

Life's better with one. Then it's almost trivial to get a new belt on or work on anything else in that area.

Is an access hole really needed? Just wondering...as I kind of like my backpad.

No, but I'm still going to use the Center section of the Backpad ( I velcro it) it can be seen a page or 2 back

Did a little work before I leave for "The Glen"

Got the front end up in the air so I could get the 4 Lug Fuchs off and ready to send to "00SEVEN" and so I can tear off the front suspension when I get back

Finished up the suspension & brakes today and got it rolling biggrin.gif

The car may be For Sale as my GT is coming home soon. I had a local 911 racer come by today to look at it as he totaled his 68 911 race car & needs to find a home for his motor & wheels. If somebody wants to beat him to the punch, get a hold of me.

Car is For Sale as a Roller ( See it in the Classifieds)

My GT is coming home next week, which mean I won't touch this for a quite a while. Might as well goe to someone with a Vision

There are only 3 Kits that I know that were ever Made

I have a NOS kit.

That makes 4. It will be in Demand after this build. Tough to ship - being only two piece - very easy to install though.
