914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Motor Size: 1.7, 1.8, 2.0?

Posted by: f4fighter Sep 13 2010, 06:18 PM

I bought a type 4 engine with the serial number EA043106. Can anyone tell me what size this motor is?

Thanks!

1972/1973 1.7

Actually, it's difficult to tell from the engine code. We know it STARTED life as a '72/'73 1.7. Until it's torn down, there's no way to be sure what it is.

oh krusty one... excuse my ignorance here, but how do the numbers read? is there a system to them or is it just a rough idea related to lower numbers and up through the years?

"W" code engines - 1969-1971-1.7L
"EA" code engines- 1972-73- 1.7L (non Calif)
"EB" code engines-1973 1.7L Calif
"GA" code engines -1973-74- 2.0L USA
"GC" code engines 1975-76- 2.0L USA
"GB" code engines 1973-75- 2.0LROW

my mind is drawing a blank on the 1.8L codes

agree.gif .... IIRC the codes are both at the end of the PET 914 parts catalog, on Jeff Bowlsby's classic 914 website & in the 914 info section on here linked above.

AN - ROW T4 1.8l Carbs
EC - US T4 1.8l - L-Jet

just to complete the list (and because 1.8l engines are great!)

I've got a number / letters thats not on the list or maybe I have the wrong code. Read it off a tag that was rivited to the case by the oil cooler inlet I think. .....5573 AP 442063

That's a rebuilder's ID stamp. Original IDs are stamped into the case.
