914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Type-4 engine question

Posted by: stewteral Sep 19 2010, 11:23 PM

Hey 914ers,

I have a basic "dumb" question: I have a 1.7 engine and am looking at a rebuild.
Will the 1.8 liter bores fit into my cases or will machining be required?

Are there any other issues involved such as bore height, fitting the heads, fitting the case studs, etc.?

Thanks,
Terry

Fits the case, but the heads would need to be opened up

If you looking for more displacement I would go with a 96mm big bore kit for the 1.7/1.8 (66mm stroke). As mentioned above if you are using 1.7 heads you will need to have them opened up to fit. If you use the 1.8 or 2.0 heads they will slip right on.

All cases 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 have the same diameter.

Hey rhcb914,

Thanks for your response!
Surely the 96mm bores while enticing, will require machining of the cases...yes?
BTW: who is a good source for these bore & piston sets?

Best,
Terry

No machining of the case for 96mm. Heads only.

No case machining, but many do spot face the bore seating surface, the 1.7 heads would still need boring.
