Wow. Great start! I've done a little work in sketch up and know how time consuming it can be. What a fun project.

This software is excellent for basic architecture, but it's not the best tool to draw uneven lines and shapes... That front fender is a nightmare...
When doing this job you realise that despite the "boxy" shape the 914 is full of subtle curves and is a real achievement in car design.

Has anybody completed a 3d model of the car? I've done some 3d imaging in the past, perhaps I could take a model and produce some cool photos.

care to give a quick tutorial on using the background images as reference for drawing in sketchup? I've played a little with this in 3dsmax, but is has been awhile.

Johannes,
Very cool project. I'm still doing my projects by Autocad, always wanted to learn sketchup. Could I get a copy?

See links posted above.

I'm drawing our resort buildings with Sketchup to get them into Google Earth.

It would be awesome if Google would accept a submission of that 914 into Earth!! laugh.gif Place it on your street, on race tracks. smile.gif Could make for a fun virtual scavenger hunt.

Hi,

This is really cool, thanks for sharing it.

I am interested in trying to do some aero analysis on my 914 track car that has highly customized bodywork. Ideally this would be done with CFD (though I'm still working on getting access to decent CFD software). I understand that I may need to coming up with a CAD rendering of my car, but maybe I could start with Sketchup?

Somebody should digitalize their car with those new 3D scanners

Very cool, A good friend of mine has been with Sketchup from the start, I sent him this thread, he digs it. Said to add it to the 3D warehouse once you are done, lots of other porsche's but no 914's yet.

Unfortunatelly, I may be done before the car is ...

Way cool! I've been using SU for sometime for architecture and I agree, subtle curves take a lot of time...will you be submitting it to Google Earth? I also humbly ask if could share your file with us......puh-leeese! Merci, in advance.

I saw that blue Bugatti you sketched last night on "What my Car worth".

Posted by: trojanhorsepower Jul 7 2011, 05:42 PM

Thanks!

I have tried working on it. You are right it is hard to do the compound curves.

I have managed half a top, but the back fender so far has been beyond me. wacko.gif

Could you maybe re-upload it? Try Mediafire.com. It should last longer.
Thanks!

I know there was a Prof. Out of Cali that had some of his students run some simulations in solidworks floworks with different front/rear spoiler combinations. I tried to email him to see if he would share the model, but no response yet.

Wow, saw this when you first stared, this is great, how is the progress on the 914 coming along? If ok with you I could get one of my consultants to use in a presentation I have coming up. As for the Bugatti, my buddy races one in the historics out here, I'll post a pic or two when I get to work.

On a side note, the same guy finished restoring his Alfa TZ2 that is now in gran turismo 5. A big group from Japan came out to scan the car, record engine noises and did some basic handling tests alleged to a computer. They even put. A bunch of sensors on him while he was driving. Cool stuff!

I would like to get the updated model also. beerchug.gif
