Well, I got my LE to start up once again. Ended up being fouled plugs. Replaced with new ones and it fired right up and ran great. Revved up no problems.
Lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I thought it might be unburnt fuel until I saw this:
Wonder what was fouling the plugs... LOL
DOH!
I would say that you have a 99-00 Civic that needs some wiping down!
Dood.....
Yer 914 blew a nasty, oily fart all over yer Honder....
Yuk...
LOL... yep, cleaned that up right away.
So... any ideas what is wrong with my engine?
Guess I will be pulling the motor at some point.
oil level to high, over pressured crankcase [no vent or pcv valve], worn valve guides, stuck or worn/broken piston rings, or maybe all the oil that might have been shot into the cylinders is just burning out after after having been stored for a while.
Ha, the 914 just shit on the ricer ! Nice!
#4 doesn't look to good. that hole is most likely your problem.
Bummer on the engine
Classic picture though... I would frame it!
did you crank this over and over trying to start it?
this could be that you washed down the cylinders with gas from the injectors when it wouldn't start. that would mix with the oil on the cylinders and get past the ring real easy.
drain the oil and see if it smells like gas. if it does change filetr and refill with oil and try it again. the smoke might clear up.
Yes, I did crank and crank and crank....
Also double checked the vac lines. Didn't have the canister hooked in and just joined the two hoses. May have caused pressure from that set up
Have added the canister and, following a vac line diagram I found on the web, made sure all lines were in the correct spot.
Cleaned off plugs and reinstalled.
Will drain oil and add new. After that... start it and let whatever oil is still in cylinders burn off?
Thanks for the input, messix.
so close to
You need to drain the oil from the exhaust Seriously
Cool NARP photo! Just like Herbie!
Nice fart.
First, you cant trust a cold compression test. It will give you false readings that are meaningless.
Second..start it up after you change the oil and filter.
Run it for a long time to heat up the motor and the exhaust...get all the oil burned out of the muffler...
Do a compression test right after you shut it off.
Take out all the plugs, open up the throttle body and fix it there.
Use a threaded hose type compression tester.
Remove the relay for the fuel pump so you dont fill up the cylinders with fuel again.
Turn over the motor for the same number of seconds per cylinder.
Post those readings...a warm compression test.
Rich
Thanks, Rich.
Been planning to get a warm compression test once I got the thing running.
Hope to have some numbers to post tomorrow.
if its close...re-torque the heads and test it again.
most of these motors need the heads re-torqued.
Rich
My car did everything you described...white smoke...oil/gas puking out of the tail pipe. If there is gas in your oil in the case, check the fuel injectors. Turns out one of mine was stuck in the open position and caused it.
I say you sell that POS to some dumbass in west Tennessee with a black one so he will have a matching pair for say oh,300.00 to 500.00 since it doest run and will have to be towed to the other end of the state!
Kinda read through all the posts, even the Sharting one.
If it were me, I'd do a proper warm up on the engine, drive it if you can. Those compression numbers aren't that bad at all and #4 that fell a little under 100psig might come up within spec after driving it.
As others have said, change the oil, make sure it's as good as can be.
If it's been sitting, it's worse off then if it had been driven.
If it's been sitting, I would run some mystery oil through it, might help loosen up the rings and such. Made a huge difference in mine when I first got it. That was 15K miles ago.
Oil,er, both. I ran it in the oil, cleans carbon out quick like. I ran it for about 200 miles then changed the oil and filter out. Always start with cheap oil on a motor thats been sitting, cause your gonna want to change it right away again. As far as putting it in the fuel, it does help injectors and clean the valves, but I guess so would injector cleaner.
Thanks, Jeff. Heading outside shortly to work on it.
Update: oil and filter changed. Mystery oil added. Started right up. Smoking like crazy (how long should I expect it to take to burn all that oil out?)
Plugs 1,2,3 were dry oily. 4 was clean
Here are compression numbers with motor warm:
1 = 130
2 = 135
3 = 128
4 = 105
Thanks!
how long did it run with the gassy oil in it?
Ran for about a minute. Maybe less.
Get it warm. Mystery oil works better after a warm up. It may also cause some smoke, since it's super thin. I'd say 15 minutes and you should start to see it clear up.
get out and put it under a load. give it a couple of good hard pulls through the gears.
Thanks Jeff and Troy.
Will get it tagged tomorrow and then it till the smoke clears up.
Gesundheit!
