914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Group Buy for 914-6 Oil Tanks, any interest?

Posted by: hwgunner Nov 10 2010, 01:43 PM

OK, so I have had a few people ask about doing a group buy on 914-6 oil tanks. I have made some calls and done some figuring and here is what i have come up with.

Number 1: Need 10 of these sold
Patrick Motorsports Tank $635
Patrick Motorsports Filter Console $125.00
Patrick Motorsports Filler Neck w/ Dipstick $150.00

The Filter console and filler neck are not required for the buy in. I will be discounting them on my own so that you guys will be getting a better deal.

Number 2: Need 5 of these sold
Vellios Oil Tank (with filter console) $450.00

Number 3: Need 10 of these sold
GPR Custom 3 piece Cohline 914-6 Oil Line set $250.00 ($275 less than ten sets)

Please no BASHING of any of these parts. Discussion and facts are great but I do not want to get into any mudslinging about any of this.

Is there anything else you guys need?

As with all sales, this is plus shipping and Sales Tax if in Ca.

Let me know if you have any questions and post here if you are in so I can keep track beerchug.gif

Here is what i can tell you. They are not on the website because i have some major changes coming and I do not want to have to do the work twice. The lines are custom made for me on a Cohline oil line machine with real Cohline parts and hose. Essentially these are the same as the factory lines. They are the same size and configuration as the original 914-6 oil lines, including the 90 degree fitting and the coupler that goes through the bracket on the body. For a conversion car that does not have the bracket you can either make and add the bracket or find another way to support the line at that point. Either way that is easy enough. If you have any other questions let me know. beerchug.gif

I'm in for an oil line set.

Posted by: Scott Schroeder Nov 10 2010, 03:14 PM

Shoot - my car is in the process of being converted, so I do not have the hard return line. I will drop you a line/PM directly to discuss the one long line I will need.

Thanks!!

Are the Vellios tanks new old stock or is someone remanufacturing them now?

George Vellios seems to be like a Unicorn these days, a mystical creature of great power but no one really knows if they exist anymore!

If they are new old stock, any idea if these tanks contain internal baffling? I've heard that his early versions didn't include any baffling and caused bad oil foaming under certain conditions. These are the cast aluminum tanks I assume.

I assume if I pick the Vellios tank, I just add a Patrick neck to complete it?

Thanks!

I think the Patrick Motorsports oil tanks and lighter, one reason I'm going for it biggrin.gif

BTW I'd be fine with a delay, if it means more people can do the group-buy...probably won't work on the conversion till spring anyway.

This is true, the Patrick tank is lighter, and that is seen as a benefit. beerchug.gif

Vellios is a cast aluminum tank where as the Partick version is welded aluminum panels.

Patrick tank is slightly larger in capacity as well.

Some early Vellios tanks lacked internal baffling I understand. Can cause oil foaming and in race applications it can starve the oil pickup in long cornering I also hear.

Every part has a history. I do not mind the facts, which so far is what we have, but quite frankly there is a personal side to some of these parts that I do not feel would be appropriot for this thread. I just don't want to get into that personal side about any of the manufacturers.

I should have photos of the 2 sided by side at the end of this next week. The 2 taks are very different in design but end up doing the same thing. The Patrick tank is sheet aluminum that has been cut and welded together with internal baffeling and accessory and mounting points just like the original. The Vellios tank, made by Vellios, is cast aluminum, 2 halves, and also has internal baffeling. The mounting points on the Vellios are the same as the factory and it requires a filler neck like the factory but it has the filter console/stand built right in. This further recuces the cost of the Vellios over the Patrick. It must also be pointed out that the Vellios tank is heavier by several pounds because it is cast.

The last thing I want to say is that I will not sell anything that I do not beleive in. Both of these tanks are good tanks. beerchug.gif

I could do that.

Just a thought:
We could also do a deposit so we know exactly where were at numbers wise. There would be a paypal charge (if I was to hang onto everyones deposit), I don't want to be out of pocket. Then we could have a February 1st or March 1st due date.
Then we could all get the Patrick tank.

Myself, I could probably get together the funds for just the Vellios tank within a month or so if things are leaning that way.

BTW the console for the Patrick tank, is it the same as the one for the /6 tank?
If it is I have it.

Posted by: -JR- Nov 13 2010, 11:30 PM

Put me down for a Vellios tank and a filler neck assembly.

I couldn't find any information on the oil lines. There are at least 6 lines in a complete front oil cooler setup or more depending on how it's configured.

Which oil lines are in this kit? A simple diagram would be SUPER! Or part numbers of Porsche lines it's replacing would also work for me.

Thanks Johnathan.

BTW - The group buy steel GT fender flare order went smooooth.

Is this group buy still on? I'm curious what you mean by, "I will be discounting them on my own so that you guys will be getting a better deal" Does that mean that the price for the neck and console will be less than what is listed below?

Does the Filler Neck w/ Dipstick below also fit the Vellios?

The prices "listed below" are the discount prices. Regular price for both of those is $159 each. Yes the filler neck fits the Vellios unit. And yes this is still on. From what I have seen though this could take a while because there are several people who are looking at pulling the trigger after the first of the year.

Sorry I missed this. the oil line set is the 3 piece set for a stock 914-6. this is not for a front oil cooler set up. there are the 2 lines that get coupled together at the stock oil line bracket, with the coupler, and the line that attaches to the curved hard line that goes under the motor. if you are looking for a custom set up to go to a front cooler i can probably get that done also but we would need to talk on the phone about it. thanks for asking. beerchug.gif

I sold my last Patrick tank just before the group buy and have been trying to get JP to sell me one at the GB price but he has raised my price for one and wont send just one to be for the GB. Posted by: hwgunner Dec 29 2010, 05:05 PM

OK, I have been kinda quiet because I had a problem that I had to work out on the Vellios oil tanks. When I originally talked to George about the tanks I brought up using the factory oil lines and nothing was said. From this I assumed that using the factory lines would not be a problem. It turns out, though, George started making his tanks so they accepted NPT fitting instead of metric fittings several years ago. this I did not know and, from what I can find, there are no NPT to metric fitting available. I wanted this to be plug and play so I went out and got correct Metric fitting and am having George do this run with them so that oil lines will be a no brainer. If anyone would like the NPT style so you can run AN fittings, NPT to AN is easy to find, let me know and i will get you one of those tanks. if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. The tanks will be ready in about 3 weeks so I will be collecting $$ in a couple weeks. beerchug.gif

I may be joining the party for an oil tank. I'm in the process of picking up a 914 that I just bought. Making it a 914-6 racecar.
Do both of these tanks have any internal baffleing for use in a race car?

What's the difference between NPT and AN and what should I use? For a 81 3.0L SC.

NPT stands for National Pipe Thread and AN is what all the hot rod guys use, Earl's and Russell fitting are common AN fittings. George went to NPT on the tank so that guys could choose the size AN fittings they wanted to run. Some guys might want an AN16 fitting while others might use an AN12 fitting. NPT to AN fitting are easy to get and come in all different sizes. This way George makes just one tank.

Porsche uses metric fittings which are different thread size and pitch than AN fittings and there are no NPT to Metric fittings that i can find. I wanted the tanks to be plug and play for a real 914-6 so that is why I am having George make the tanks with the correct metric thread. If you get the Metric tank you will be able to use stock Porsche oil lines (metric) and a stock on engine oil cooler.

the real decision, in my opinion, comes down to what you are going to do with the on engine oil cooler. No matter what you are going to do you will need to modify your on engine oil cooler (or get one that is modified) or get a real 914-6 on engine oil cooler or use a block off plate and front mounted oil cooler.

If you are going with the front cooler then you will probably want the NPT tank because it will be much easier to make up AN lines to go to the front and back and most front oil coolers and on engien block off plates use AN fittings.

If you are sticking with the on engine oil cooler then you need to decide if you are going to modify the cooler with an AN fitting or a metric fitting. Some say it is easier and cheaper to get the AN fitting. Others want to use original parts and go with the Metric. Neither is better than the other in my opinion, I just happen to have the stuff to do the metric lines and can supply an on engine oil cooler with the metric fittings. If you go AN you will have to decide what size is best for you and have someone modify your cooler and make up your lines.

Now if that is not confusing enough for you call me at 800-321-5432 and we will figure out what is best for you. beerchug.gif

I may be joining the party for an oil tank. I'm in the process of picking up a 914 that I just bought. Making it a 914-6 racecar.
Do both of these tanks have any internal baffleing for use in a race car?

I believe the PMS tank has more internal baffling than the Vellios after talking to both George and Jim. If you are doing a serious race car then the PMS is probably better. the PMS tank can also be had with metric or AN fittings.

What's the difference between NPT and AN and what should I use? For a 81 3.0L SC.

NPT are a tapered thread. the size is measured as I.D. NPT is a US standard and not to be confused with BSS (British Standard). You may also see NPT listed as FPT (Female Pipe Thread) and MPT (Male Pipe Thread).

AN is short for Army/Navy. This style was originally designed for the military. It is a straight thread with a 37 degree cone on the end for sealing. You can get both NPT and Metric AN adapters.

Metric threads are not tapered. They require a sealing ring or gasket. They are measured from the outside point of the thread or OD. A common size is 14mmx1.5 This means 14mm outer diameter of the threads and the threads are 1.5mm apart.

Is the Vellios tank set up to accept the factory seal and circlip that seals the tank to the body?

Part numbers are 901-107-281 for the circlip and 901-107-291 for the seal.

If you drive your car in the rain, water will spray in through the hole in the body where the oil filter comes through without this seal.

I will be sending PM's to people very shortly. I will have 4 NPT tanks next week and then some Metrick tanks the following week. I need to start getting payment so I do not end up with a bunch of people backing out and a bunch of tanks on the shelf. At this point I am willing to do the Vellios tanks, the oil line sets and the oil filler necks with the dip sticks. The PMS tank and the filter console will have to wait till I get enough people to do 10 of each (I will buty 1 of each so we really need 9 people).

Here are some pics of the Vellios tank. I have asked George to be a little more careful with the outside of the tank and try and make it look a little prettier. the first one I got had some drips form the sealant and had some scuff marks on the outside.

It is still open. The tank has a built in oil filter console but you would need to buy the Filler neck and dipstick. I am selling those too. You will need to choose between NPT and metric fitting for the tank. There is some explanation above. The NPT Tanks are going to ship on Monday and the metric tanks are still a week or 2 out.

An up date on the tanks: Not enough people for the Patrick tanks! I have made offers to those that expressed interest in them to give a smaller discount. On the other hand, if I can get to 10 before i have to order then I will give the old GB price to everyone.

On the Vellios tanks I am right there with you. Waiting and waiting. I did talk to George today about a few things and did get him to agree to let me see about having a shop in my area put the tanks together instead of him doing them all. he has way bigger fish to fry and things to work on than putting tanks together. this may speed things up a bit but we will see.

Looks like we may still have one of the 5 metric tanks i ordered available. If you want to get in line please let me know. beerchug.gif

Got my Patrick tank from GPR today. I was originally in for the Patrick, then the Vellios and then back again at the regular price for the Patrick. I am VERY happy with the Patrick tank. Unbelievably light and excellent craftsmanship.

I also took my inspection camera and looked on the inside of the tank at the baffling and all. Again, excellent craftsmanship, even where you'll never see it!

Jonathan, thank you once again! This is going to make for a very clean and problem free installation!

Posted by: hwgunner Mar 13 2011, 11:45 AM

OK, my frustration level has hit an all time high at this point. The main reason is that I can not get the tanks out of George. He has been working on them but it is going very slow because his "regular job" is making him work 6 or 7 days a week for the last 3 weeks, leaving little time for tanks. He has been telling me to be patient and to tell the customers to be patient but that just isn’t working for me anymore. The second thing to do it is the guy who makes the oil lines for me just told me he ran out of fittings and it will be about 5 more days till he has them done, this after he told me he could have 10 sets done in no time. “Are you sure? I don’t need to worry about you running out of anything??” I said. “No, I have plenty of everything”, he responded. I do believe he made a simple mistake and that it was totally unintentional, but it still adds to the frustration. I am confident in the oil lines being done at the end of this coming week. The tanks though, I am not.

So this is where I am at. If anyone who has paid for a Vellios tank wants their money back please let me know and I will send out a refund immediately. I feel terrible about taking your $$ and not being able to deliver. In my view it has just been too long and I can’t continue without offering a refund. I know George will deliver at some point, he has already asked for the $$ on the next tanks because he needs it but I told him I need tanks first, I just don’t know when. He told me again today 2 weeks. I will do what I can to speed things up, I went and spent 10 hours of my time going to Palmdale to pick up the last set of 5 and will do that again if I have to, but can not promise a delivery date at this point.

Now, if any one want to switch to the Patrick tank, I have spoken to Jim and they are in stock and ready to ship, I can do that but the cost will be more than the Vellios for sure. The Patrick tank will be $688.00, I can not get the original GB price unless I do 10 at a time and I just do not have the $$ to do 10 myself. Please also note that the Patrick tank will require a filter console that the Vellios tan does not need. If you are interested in switching to this please contact me.

As for the oil lines, I know they will be ready shortly and will get them out as soon as I have them.

If you have any questions or problems with the above please let me know as soon as possible.

Then he is going to weld them. I really feel bad about this but am in a position that i just have no controll over at this point. I keep trying to get him to do the tanks but i just can not get him to work any faster. In the last 2 months his job has been working him 7 days a week and that means the tanks don't get done. OK, so here is th edeal. the Vellios tanks are on hold indefinitely. At this point the Metric ones are not done and have no ETA. Since any new NPT tanks will be done after the metric ones are done they have no ETA either. I have committed to George to buy the Metric tanks when they are complete but will not be selling them until I get a call from him saying I can pick them up. Again, NO ETA on these. I will post them again ONLY when I have them IN-HAND. Sorry for anyone that got bogged down in this.

Still no response from George. I do have one last Patrick tank here, ready to be shipped if anyone is still interested. PM me if you are. beerchug.gif

I'm still in for a metric Vellios tank when, if, they are up.

Thanks
