914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Fixing the Sixes...

Posted by: Eric_Shea Apr 26 2004, 02:32 PM

Well, I said good-bye to her this morning. Keep us in your prayers. The sixer left for the full monte. Many thanks to this list. I was able to get all the parts I needed (and I may need more... stay tuned).

She get's stripped tonight and tomorrow and then the metal work begins. I purchased this one from the original owner. It was delivered to Dave Strong Porsche Audi here in Salt Lake City. The owner was a retired police officer and his wife drove the car back and forth to work mostly. Everything is dead original and will stay that way.

Here's some pics as she left this morning:

Currently looking at sourcing a complete rear quarter for the passengers side. Looking for new but may have to go with a donor. Brad's on it.

It will need a door jam. That rear quarter. The entire longitudinal to the front. A partial of the inner wheel well. Front passengers fender and all those patches fixed. Most of the metal is in-house with the exception of the rear quarter/door jam piece.

My donor left 1/4 is already in CA. But I do have a brand spankin new jam piece. I'll have to check if it's left or right. Want it?

Wow... you DA'd the panels down?

That takes a graceful touch. I have a good DA, but I'm always worried that I'm going to warp the panel with too much heat... therefore, I chemical strip.

Looks like the project is coming along nicely.

Posted by: Gint May 6 2004, 07:41 AM

I don't think all of that paint wasn't removed with a DA. That would have taken forever. There are far better alternatives these days that work great. Se my rusto thread. I posted a pic of the 3M stripping wheels I used. Fantastic product. Especially if you can get the 7" equivalents.

Posted by: Eric_Shea May 6 2004, 07:45 AM

Gint - Yes! Thank you. How mooch? Actually, I need to see if I can get it with the entire quarter first. I'll get you a real answer today. Shoot me a price in the mean time.

Rusty - It was all done with a DA. That's Troy's preferred method. It only took him a few hours. 36 grit at very slow RPM wink.gif

Hey, you know how my pricing works. Shoot me a fair offer and I'll more than likely accept it. No idea what it's worth, never looked. Still need the engine bulkhead patch piece for an inspection cover? I could probably get out there this weekend and cut it.

QUOTE

No shit. Ask him what he thinks about the 3M stripping pads. IMHO, they are much more efficient at removing paint, generate less heat, and don't have to used quite as slowly as 36 grit paper.

Posted by: Eric_Shea May 6 2004, 08:05 AM

Thanks Gint,

Let me find out where I stand with the other metal and I'll get back with you. And, yes. I'll still need that piece for the GT engine access.

Thanks again,

No shit... in fact, he's got the longitudinal welded on. He'd have the inner wheel housing done but he ran out of gas last night.

Inner wheel housing and front fender go back on today. I'll follow up later tonight with pics.

Z... thanks. (for both the offer and the TREMENDOUS ass shot in the avatar... DAMN... I wanna bite that thang!!). I think Brad's getting the whole lot together and putting it on a truck TODAY! (right Brad?) wink.gif Actually, Troy has enough patch work to keep himself busy for a few more days but then it's rear quarter time.

Who's doing the work, Eric?

Troy Lundquist of Lundquist Restorations. They're about 1/2 a mile from my house.

Funny thing... I used to drive by and see all these cool cars there. From the front it looks like a regular house but in the two garages that are attached to the house is a shop and a spray booth (garage and more shop out back). I was looking to have my 911 turned into a full blown RS conversion. By that time I knew they were shooting cars there. I stopped in to ask him if he could weld on the flares because I had real factory RS flares and I wanted to make sure they could do the job right. He took me into the shop and I saw a 50 era Jag on a rotisserie (sic) being welded together from two seperate tubs. It became a show car. Upon further questioning I found out they won a national event for Jaguar with one of their restorations. I knew I had my shop.

The paint jobs are not your standard $3k jobs but I feel their worth it. In fact, they lost one competition because the paint was too good. Judges would complain that "Jaguar never had a paint and finish that looked like that." I'd have to agree. My 911 really is better than factory, even the glass (bumpers, ducktail, hood)

Posted by: Eric_Shea May 10 2004, 09:45 AM

Thanks! That oughta do it! That will be cut and trimmed for the GT project. I just got the fenders back from the sandblaster. They look to be M471 factory installed. The finish work is "IMPECCABLE". It even had metal flare extensions on the outer rockers. I'll have to post some pics and see if Brad still has a line on a local M471 to check it out.

All the metal is on the stock 6er so this week we'll get into paint prep. Should be soon.

Nope. I was only there for three weekdays. I figured Timo would have to work, and I needed to spend the eves with my wife when she was finished with work. As it worked out, I hoofed my ass off and didn't really have much in the way pf spare time any way.

Here's a few shots from last week. The metal work is now complete. He spend the remainder of the week adjusting and fine tuning all the body panels. Eye brows, hoods and doors all line up perfectly. This coming week should be final body prep and paint! Then comes the fun part... putting it back together!

Literally got lucky. Earlier up in the post I mentioned the chance meeting. He's a neighbor and I kept seeing all of these exotics in front of his home/shop. I stopped in to see if they could weld some flares on my 911RS and saw a vintage Jag on the Rotisserie (sic... never could spell that one). I checked their welds and metal work and I was hooked. They also do stunning paint. They got a "Peoples Choice" on a Jag at Nationals. They get downgraded on their paint by the official judges because it's too good... bummer! w00t.gif

Posted by: Carrera916 Jun 30 2004, 01:08 PM

My goodness, Eric!

It sure looks so good and I've been a body man for very long time...yes, he is indeed quick and good on your car!

Maybe I missed the post somewhere but I haven't see or know if the engine compartment area is also in decent shape? Especially beneath the battery tray where there's tend to be a common rusted out holes down there....that leads into longitdual rust problem.....was that area okay?

Neat looking car you got, Eric! clap56.gif

Jerry

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jun 30 2004, 02:07 PM

Thanks Jerry,

The engine compartment is original and fairly clean. The hell holes are in good shape. I would have liked to do a full resto, meaning, strip dip and rip but the interior was in excellent original condition and everything else seemed fine. I'll do the underside as I progress. When it gets some down time I'll strip all the wheel wells and restore the suspension. I'll probably get a shock update at that time but this car will stay all original. I plan on cleaning the engine compartment as I go along too.

Posted by: StratPlayer Jun 30 2004, 03:14 PM

Wow Eric that car is coming along just beautifully, maybe some day we can hook up and I can pick your brain about the guy that painted your car. The last step for my car is the paint, maybe this fall I will get it done, right now I'm just enjoying the car as much as I can. Looking forward to seeing your car.

It wasn't delivered that way. Those came after the first repaint. I asked the original owner about them and he said no. I never was a big fan of them on these cars. I like them on LE's though. You'll see in some of the garage shots that I can be a fan of decals biggrin.gif
