Well, I said good-bye to her this morning. Keep us in your prayers. The sixer left for the full monte. Many thanks to this list. I was able to get all the parts I needed (and I may need more... stay tuned).
She get's stripped tonight and tomorrow and then the metal work begins. I purchased this one from the original owner. It was delivered to Dave Strong Porsche Audi here in Salt Lake City. The owner was a retired police officer and his wife drove the car back and forth to work mostly. Everything is dead original and will stay that way.
Here's some pics as she left this morning:

Found a few of those braised patch jobs. All coming out... a couple are visable here. One at the front of the sail panel and one at the rear.

Here it is today...

The guy who is doing it won the Jaguar nationals so it might be a CW car... no wing though
Oh... and I'll drive it.
More photos... here's the passengers sail panel yesterday;

Currently looking at sourcing a complete rear quarter for the passengers side. Looking for new but may have to go with a donor. Brad's on it.
It will need a door jam. That rear quarter. The entire longitudinal to the front. A partial of the inner wheel well. Front passengers fender and all those patches fixed. Most of the metal is in-house with the exception of the rear quarter/door jam piece.

Labels indicate a right side unit.

Wow... you DA'd the panels down?
That takes a graceful touch. I have a good DA, but I'm always worried that I'm going to warp the panel with too much heat... therefore, I chemical strip.
Looks like the project is coming along nicely.
-Rusty
I don't think all of that paint wasn't removed with a DA. That would have taken forever. There are far better alternatives these days that work great. Se my rusto thread. I posted a pic of the 3M stripping wheels I used. Fantastic product. Especially if you can get the 7" equivalents.
Gint - Yes! Thank you. How mooch? Actually, I need to see if I can get it with the entire quarter first. I'll get you a real answer today. Shoot me a price in the mean time.
Rusty - It was all done with a DA. That's Troy's preferred method. It only took him a few hours. 36 grit at very slow RPM
Thanks Gint,
Let me find out where I stand with the other metal and I'll get back with you. And, yes. I'll still need that piece for the GT engine access.
Thanks again,
Eric
your supposed to make that cover out of aluminum ya know..... (well maybe not for a show car)
brant (with a fancy new avatar)
Can't wait to see the finished product. She'll be close-up perty in no time. Keep'em coming.
Eric,
Looks like a great project! Seeing project pics always helps me get off my butt and head to the garage! Best of luck!

Here's a couple of Longitudinal pics. Brad... I need that metal bad!!

You can see the outer longitudinal on the ground... pics are similar.

Your guy isn't wasting any time. Keep the pics comin Eric.
Hey Eric....415PB has my brother's 914 in Palm Desert and is cutting it up.....might want to contact him.....
Gint,
I think I've got the door jam coming with the quarter.
Many Thanks for the offer!
Whatever works. what's the timeline for the access piece? I don't think I'm goig to need it. I'll know for sure as soon as the tub gets picked up from the dipper.
no hurry... I want to finish the 911RS and the 914-6 before I go headlong into the GT. I'm just collecting parts. Whatever's convenient for you.
Thanks,
E.
Cool. Lots of travel in the next 4 weeks. I'm looking at Memorial weekend for the tub surgery.

Eric
Who's doing the work, Eric? Is it someone on the board? They sure seem to understand 914s, and the work is happening at an amazing rate.
-Rusty
Fender should go on today. Someone on the list sold me the fender and I can't remember who...?? I had it sandblasted and it came out great.
Identify yourself!
More pics... we had to cut out a section of the cowl. Those should be welded in tomorrow.

Braised chunks all cut out. Good thing. Lots of rust coming from behind.

New cowl pieces in... he used the sandblaster to clean up the trunks and the weatherstripping tray. In the rear trunk I had him blast around the big globs of sealer they used to put the plugs in back in 1970.

The new quarter has been picked clean. Ready for the install tomorrow. Thursday the door sill and jacking donut will go on and that should finish the metal work portion of the project.

Glad it made it Eric. I was worried about UPS, but it was the fastest way we could get it to you.
B
UPS worked great. I didn't think they'd take it. I was by there this AM and he's really got it cleaned up nice . It should be on by now. I'm going to head out and get some more shots.
When I was younger, I used to fantasize about being a rock star. Now that I am a 914 nut, and see pictures like these, I fantasize about being able to do amazing body work like you got goin on here.
What an fantastic job this guy is doing. Thanks for taking us along for the ride with the pictures.
Funny... I wanted to be a rock star too.
Here's some more pics. It's on.
Hey Brad, I sure am glad you guys painted that "for sale" on there...

another view... you can see the trunk sand blasting through the tail light housing hole. Wanted to leave the original "goop" in place.

The factory seam was a little rough on the quarter panel. He seamed it along the bumper line.

Gint:
Thanks! That oughta do it! That will be cut and trimmed for the GT project. I just got the fenders back from the sandblaster. They look to be M471 factory installed. The finish work is "IMPECCABLE". It even had metal flare extensions on the outer rockers. I'll have to post some pics and see if Brad still has a line on a local M471 to check it out.
All the metal is on the stock 6er so this week we'll get into paint prep. Should be soon.
Did you tie up with Timo while over there?
So... are you back?
Let me know how you want to handle payment and shipping.
Thanks!
E.
Here's a few shots from last week. The metal work is now complete. He spend the remainder of the week adjusting and fine tuning all the body panels. Eye brows, hoods and doors all line up perfectly. This coming week should be final body prep and paint! Then comes the fun part... putting it back together!
Anyone on the list know how to put one of these things together?

This shot shows so much. The rear quarter, the inner wheel housing piece, the jacking donut, the inner longitudinal, the jack post and the door sill. Looking back it's hard to believe it went this far...

Those were the color sanding phases. It's done now and I began with the front valance area. The horns are still being restored (platers) so the bumper will have to wait. Fogs are on...
Attached image(s)
I had a few of the original screws so I got the valance started. Without the horns I had to move to the back after this.
Attached image(s)
has to be the quickest body resto ever on a 914, and not an easy one either. how did you find such a body man?
The rear is nearly complete. I need to install the trunk latch today and that should do it.
Attached image(s)
Engine lid was next...
Attached image(s)
Both door handles are on... next will be the door panels. I spent 1 hour cleaning overspray from the "previous" paint job off the handles and corresponding seals/gaskets. Lubed everything with graphite. (careful... exciting picture to follow) <_<
Attached image(s)
My goodness, Eric!
It sure looks so good and I've been a body man for very long time...yes, he is indeed quick and good on your car!
Maybe I missed the post somewhere but I haven't see or know if the engine compartment area is also in decent shape? Especially beneath the battery tray where there's tend to be a common rusted out holes down there....that leads into longitdual rust problem.....was that area okay?
Neat looking car you got, Eric!
Jerry
Thanks Jerry,
The engine compartment is original and fairly clean. The hell holes are in good shape. I would have liked to do a full resto, meaning, strip dip and rip but the interior was in excellent original condition and everything else seemed fine. I'll do the underside as I progress. When it gets some down time I'll strip all the wheel wells and restore the suspension. I'll probably get a shock update at that time but this car will stay all original. I plan on cleaning the engine compartment as I go along too.
Wow Eric that car is coming along just beautifully, maybe some day we can hook up and I can pick your brain about the guy that painted your car. The last step for my car is the paint, maybe this fall I will get it done, right now I'm just enjoying the car as much as I can. Looking forward to seeing your car.
Any time... I'm here in Sandy (108 S., 2045 E.). He's only a few blocks away. We could go chat with him.
Looks great Eric. Base/clear or single stage?
Awesome new single stage. Less areas to go wrong. I can't believe it... I've never seen a 914 so straight and shiney... at least not in my garage!!
I'm gonna have to go out and put a few scratches inher to make it feel more "homey"
Getting near the end... finaly got the horn bits and pieces back from the platers today. Bolted them back together and on the front of the car. Now I can install the front bumper!
Attached image(s)
Bumper needs to be polished and the installed.
Got my sail panel kit today. Any step-by-steps on that?
Attached image(s)
Well... after our little fuel pump fun today, the six is back. All it needs is a thorough clean up and a full tank of gas. Thanks for all the comments from those who followed along. Here's the last bit of the restoration thread... the grand finale:

Nice job and a quick turn around!
So the 'Porsche' decal on the side was non-original .....or you just don't like it?
Thanks Kelly... feels good to have one running
Eric, the car turned out excellent!
Just browsed through the whole thread...
Good job
congrats and enjoy!!!
cheers,
Jeroen
Ok, I'll ask...how much did it all set you back? (*ducks*)
That was about $8k. The car was $7k about 6 years ago.
