914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Hershey Swap Meet 2011

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Jan 14 2011, 09:06 AM

In just a few months it will be mid April. And that means we need to start planning for the Hershey Swap Meet 2011!

The meet will be on April 23-24, in the usual place at the usual time.

As in previous years, we need to grab it by the horns and make the Invasion happen - or else it won't.

As usual, I am putting out the call for a leader. Someone to spearhead the planning efforts. Make sure we get our spots, lodging, and a place to eat. We do not have Dr. DrEvil any more on the scene to coordinate some of this information.

Like last year, my attendance is on unsure footing. There is a major conference that is taking place that week which may have me in Vegas one or both days of Hershey. Last year I was able to sneak in for a day, and I am hopeful that this year I will be in for both. But it means I am not the ideal person to lead the effort. I will be happy to do whatever I can to make sure the event is a success, however.

So, which of you rogues will stand up and point the way to another great MidEngine Invasion?

I am going for Saturday. I was just thinking about Hershey earlier today smile.gif Great minds think alike. I will help however i can, I would love to do the caravan again from the Hotel. That was actually my favorite part wub.gif

INVASION !!!

One of my favorite parts is the drive up 83 watching all the cool old porsche's converge on Hershey. Not to mention cruising Hershey PA and finding all the different cars scattered at the different hotels.

Thinking my 911 needs to be in the "for sale" corral.

I expent to attend and will have at least a couple of spaces (the Titan takes all of one...). I will have my 10x10 EZ-up and a folding chair or two.

If you guys want to piggy-back onto my space allocation, let me know before too long how many spaces you figure it'll take...

Other than a space in the swap proper and a vehicle big enough to haul stuff in, I donno what more you'd want. I'm not in a position to play travel agent to arrange hotels and catering and such... Pre-parties and post-parties are fun for the guys making it a multi-day event, which is cool, but it's just a daytrip for me...

Posted by: turboman808 Jan 14 2011, 02:50 PM

Looks like I will have to sit it out this year.

Posted by: mepstein Jan 14 2011, 03:27 PM

I plan to rent a spot. How do I make sure I reserve a spot in the teener compound?

Posted by: flipb Jan 14 2011, 03:34 PM

I had a blast last year but I don't think I'll make it to this one. Timing's not great for me, plus I'm hoping to cash in one big Kitchen Pass so that I can attend the Potomac PCA Driving Clinic at Summit Point. (The fact that it's on my birthday should help my case.)

Posted by: ClayPerrine Jan 14 2011, 04:20 PM

Travis and Robyn Howard, and Betty and I showed up for the first one. We are talking about showing up again.

Still debating, but it looks good.

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Jan 14 2011, 05:23 PM

I am making plans to attend but will not be driving a teener. Sorry, don't know enough about the area to plan anything.

Posted by: okieflyr Jan 14 2011, 07:44 PM

I'm planning to attend and probably getting two slots for the car/trailer.
I'll pull the small trailer down with the engine and parts on it. My parts load and weather will determine if the 914 brings the trailer or the Suby. For me this is one day event and return home at the end of the long day. I may be able to bring the ez up if the weather is bad for add'l shelter that everyone is welcome too.

I am planning on beeing there. This will be my first . i am not sure what I can help with, but if there is anything you guys think that I can help with, just let me know...

The world's largest 1-day Porsche-only swap meet.
You will find the official stuff here: http://www.cpa-pca.org/. It's their event and that is _the_ authoritative information resource.

Nearest is probably Harrisburg, but good luck finding a good fare there.
Philadelphia or Baltimore are better choices and you can probably rent a car for the difference in airfare...

If you were to fly into PHL you could probably find someone to pick you up at the airport, put you up for the night, drive you to the meet, and get you back...

Posted by: zymurgist Jan 15 2011, 09:23 AM

Anyone sold a car there? Do you have to get a vendor space or is that sale area run differently?

QUOTE(zymurgist @ Jan 15 2011, 10:23 AM) *

Anyone sold a car there? Do you have to get a vendor space or is that sale area run differently?

The 'cars for sale' area is typically a different place than the "parts for sale" standard vendors spaces. For one thing, getting in and out of the vendor spaces is quite difficult and quite a PITA for anyone wanting to see it run or go for a test drive.

You probably _could_ sell a whole car in a vendors' space. You can't sell parts anywhere else.

There are separate parking areas for the concours (people's choice), model-specific corrals (e.g. the 914 MEI), and the cars-for-sale.

But check the CPA site for this year's specifics...

Posted by: zymurgist Jan 15 2011, 09:32 AM

I didn't see anything on their website other than vendor spaces... that's why I asked.

QUOTE(zymurgist @ Jan 15 2011, 10:32 AM) *

This early on they don't have as much information as they usually do... Just the link to the vendor's preregistration form is kinda lame...

I've been doing this since 2003 and how I described it is how it's worked before. They could always change it but I expect not much.

Posted by: kharma Jan 15 2011, 09:59 AM

The for sale corral is near the entrance and relatively easy to get in and out of for test drives. I think we were taking $20 a car last year, no prereg necessary? My parents are pretty involved with the CPA-PCA, alternated my time between roaming the vendors and helping out (in my case, staring at all the cars coming in!).

This is my 3rd year as well. Will be there as it's a 50 minute drive or so. I also love the fact you see older Porsche's up 83. I don't think I will get to bring my 74 as it should be in the paint shop by then. Usually bring a truck to bring home all the goodies! Last year snagged some real bargains on body pieces.

I can strongly recommend it to those on the fence!

Take care,

Rick

We did this two years ago. It was cheaper to rent the car for the weekend than to try to find a flight into Harrisburg.

We flew to Philly, had a cheesesteak, did some site seeing, and then took off for Hershey. Good weekend, shipped a lot of stuff home to Texas via fedex.

I will lead the caravan again cheer.gif

are we meeting at the same hotel (palmyra) it seemed like a nice spot. It was a 10 min drive to the swap. I am trying to talk the wife into comming this year, so i am not sure exactly how early i can be there. need to line up the babysitter etc..

The way I see it....

We need 2 groups. The caravan group. The swap group.

The swap group: needs to find a good empty row and put some cones up "914 parking only" and try to herd all the 914's that dont know about the invasion into our row. Also setup the tent in the swap area.

The caravan group: meet at hotel, drink coffee, socialize, shoot the shit: drive your 914 driving.gif

I would like to be in the caravan group. rolleyes.gif

how early are the vendors gettin there anyway confused24.gif
i dont remember what time we got there last year, but i do remember we ran out of parking spaces and had to move some fencing unsure.gif So mabey we should leave a little bit earlier???

I am trying to convince myself that 1,424 miles, 23 hours and 89 gallons of gasoline are worth it to drive my 38 year old 914/6 to the Hershey swap meet......and then have to turn around and repeat the trip in the other direction to drive home.

Then the followup though....

"You would have to let that batshit crazy guy drive your 914/6!"

I am looking to see if I still have the artwork for that shirt. I made it, but I think it was lost in the great office flood of 2009.

It might still reside in email somewhere. I am hopeful that I can find it, I was proud of that work.

I found the EPS file that has the banner art - which has the major design elements on it. A start. One other place I can look and see.

We are now into March...
Anyone?
While I intend to go, I can't do anything planning wise, especially with the new job inbound. My time is seriously not my own right now.

But, if no one steps up (and soon) this event is not going to happen. Not organized, at least.

Someone needs to take this by the horns. We will lend support. We have contacts for on site shelter, but we have to have spaces to put it. Someone needs to make dinner reservations - if that is going to happen.

If planning is happening and I don't know about it, I apologize. Right now, we have 54 days to put it all together.

Outside chance I will be coming up the other way though to drop a Benz off at Scotty's place, just not sure yet. confused24.gif

As far as I know, we need:
1) spaces.
2) a tent ( I have a contact for this maybe, but will be 2 weeks into a new job and unable to pick it up prior to the event)
3) A meeting place to convoy in.
4) someone on the scene early to make sure we have spaces for the convoy to park in (I can do this, especially if I am room sharing with someone local.)

The Palmyra Motel served a small group of us pretty well the past couple years.

The first year the group stayed there, we probably had around 20 or 30 meeting up on Saturday morning, then driving over to the meet. I'd say at least 20 were rooming at the motel.

Last year, not as many....maybe half as much. But still a good place to meet, and a short but fun ride over to the park.

A couple of us weren't thrilled with the rooms last year....the area smelled like fertilizer and had the flys around to prove it. But, tis the time of the year to start working the fields in that area, so the Aesthetics are expected...at no extra charge!!

not sure of my plans this year...if last minute, the Palmyra might be the right deal. Maybe a closer place to the park with less local aesthetics.... stromberg.gif

How many do we need?

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Mar 17 2011, 09:36 AM

In previous years we have had 4, but a 10X10 pop tent only takes 2 or 3 spaces I think.

Zach

Posted by: ArtechnikA Mar 17 2011, 09:44 AM

OK on the dimensional analysis but it doesn't answer the question.

OK - I'll front the group 4 spaces when I make my reservation tonight.
I will be bringing the Titan and my 10x10 EZ-Up, along with a few tables and folding chairs. I'll post the space numbers as soon as CPA-PCA tells me.

If attendees want to chip in a bit at the event, you won't have to twist my arm very hard...

Posted by: Racer Chris Mar 17 2011, 11:16 AM

Zach, why do you say 4?
Last year I provided one space for the Mid-Engine Invasion.
I've reserved one for the group again for this year, along with space for Mark Epstein/Eric Shea.
Advance reservations online ended on the 10th AFAIK.

Didn't want to horn in on your action, Chris, I just wanted to make sure the group had a place. I was unaware of your arrangements.

so - thanks !

I will still be bringing the Titan, and the EZ-Up if it is needed. But other than that, I don't think I really need spaces - I have nothing to sell and I won't have time to paint anything before the meet. The only real advantage to having a prepaid space is guaranteed parking close to the action, and early admittance. I've never been able to get there early enough to take advantage of that...

So I expect I'll just drive up and hang out with you guys while I'm not shopping and taking photographs.

For anyone else considering reserving a space, tho, the flyer I received from CPA-PCA says deadline for vendor pre-registration is March 20.

My daughter and I will be there also. I need to book a room for Friday night. Was hoping to drop the teener off at Evil's house on Friday before heading over if possible. Considering bringing a few things to sell but really doubt I will get that motivated.

Posted by: netbanshee Mar 19 2011, 08:14 PM

I'll try to make the drive down that weekend, depending on Easter w/e plans with the family and if the teener is behaving properly. Can't say more than that at the moment. :/

My quest to find time to get my car ready for Hershey is continuing. Exhaust is back on. Spark plugs are changed, regapped got my hotter coil. Idles are jetted down to 50. Idle mix screws are base set at 2 turns out and waiting to be fine tuned. my interior is back in the car.

I need to try and fix my windshield wipers, and then put gas in the car and start tuning. It is going to come RIGHT to the wire! I need more time!

Zach

Why did you remove the interior?

Don't put any weight behind the forecast until you are 1/2 way down the road to Hershey!

Actually, just ignore the forecast and be prepared for anything.
The standard Hershey Checklist:

1 GoreTex
2 Sunglasses
3 Sunscreen
4 Hat
5 Comfortable Walking Shoes

There will be shelter from sun or rain. There will be heat if it's cold.
Just Be There.

Wipers are fixed. Oil is changed. I just need to do some balancing sine I rejetted. Almost had it all done today but hadto spend some hours in the ER after a freak gardening accident. *sigh* Surely I will have one afternoon this week where I can move the car out of the garage. Right?

Tiller bounced a small rock off my eyeball. It took a few hours to get it all cleaned out. But I still got the bed tilled and the berries planted with a few hours left to wrench on my car.

I'll actually be driving back from NJ to VA on Saturday, with the fam. We usually do the direct route (I-95) but it's awfully tempting to detour via I-78 through PA and end up taking 15 down to Frederick.

Doubt I could convince the fam to add an hour to the trip... and I wouldn't be in my 914... and there are no parts I desperately need this year.

I did'nt see you there kevin

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Apr 25 2011, 06:40 AM

Kevin had a booth ~2 rows up from us. We bought some parts for the race car from him. :-)

Was a seriously good time. If you were scared off by the weather forecast - your loss. The rain was over by ~ 10am, by noon it was getting warm, and by the time we got back to the motel to get our drink on most of us had sunburns. And I got some great parts for my car.

Sunday, Don, Britt, Scott, Mike and I were the last to leave the motel. The cleaning "lady" was seriously pissed at us. We had done some cleanup the night before, but not enough. I gave her a $35 tip and told her "Sorry for being a pain in the ass." You would have thought I'd given her a brick of gold. I guess she never gets tips at that motel, as she went from mean to super nice to us.

Finding out that the AX we all thought was Sunday had been the week before due to Easter sucked. But it it meant that I got to go kayaking sunday afternoon. Judging by the pictures in the other thread.... I could stand the exercise! sad.gif Saw a bald eagle, osprey, ducks and geese and otters.

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Apr 25 2011, 07:52 AM

Had a great time myself despite the 15 hours of driving each way. Scored a few parts even though I had to work really hard for them. Kevin turned me on to some nice freebies and Foley robbed me on a couple of out of date t-shirts poke.gif . Thanks Chris, nice looking shirts. Brittney was wearing hers last time I saw her. The wings were great, the drinking was fun and thanks to Scotty I didn't have to watch those wimps fizzle out one by one all by myself. Yeah, that's right, me and Scotty were the last two standing, maybe not real steady, but still standing. Party on folks til next year. aktion035.gif
