How do I safely remove those switches from the dash? any tricks or what special tools do I need?

The knobs you just unscrew.

There is a special tool for the retainer nut but needle nose pliers will work.

I'm wondering if meant how to get them out from the back also. It's not easy from the quick look I took.

Disconnect your battery before starting!!! (else you could end up ruining a very very expensive wire harness)

After the knobs are unscrewed, the aluminum bezel that is basically a nut holding the switch can be worked free with a needle pliers, stubborn bezels can be lossened by reaching behind to the switch, and twisting it (it has better leverage than the bezel)

If you are pulling all the stuff from the dash, get the instrument pod (all three main gages) out first, that will allow you to reach in from above to the switches, this will help with access if you need more room.

good luck, dave
