June in Stockton huh....got AC?

Posted by: Lennies914 Jan 30 2011, 07:43 PM

June works for me. It will be hot. If you are staying at Jeff's I'm sure we'll be doing some time on the water anyhow. If for any reason the dates don't work out to stay with Jeff, you're welcome at my place as well. I'm right around the corner and on the water. beerchug.gif
Sorry no airline miles though.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 07:51 PM

Someone had miles and the less it cost me to get there the less people I need to afford to make it happen smile.gif It is Sun, which is a slow World day.

As for dates, I can rotate either or since now Noel is not going to be in classes this summer and can come out for vacation to the PNW either time. She may come out for Stockton as well to visit family in SJ.

Posted by: dem Jan 30 2011, 08:27 PM

I can do either of those, I think.. I got a nice core from someone doing a subaru conversion sittin' in my garage that could use freshening.

Posted by: jsconst Jan 30 2011, 08:29 PM

I would be intersted in at least watching your clinic (not sure if mine needs rebuilt, haven't driven the car yet). Hopefully I'll have it running and find out before, so I'll vote for June, might need the extra time.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 08:34 PM

build it now, or build it later for more $$$ happy11.gif

Posted by: jeeperjohn56 Jan 30 2011, 08:37 PM

Mike, Are you going to bring any of your video's with you I would like one. I took your clinlic at McMarks shop in Napa. Thanks John

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 08:38 PM

John, I can not guarantee that I will have any left by then. I have only a few now and I sell a few a week. At that rate, probably not. You can get one now for $40 shipped biggrin.gif I am shameless.

More info:

I will always advise a look-see inside the box. If anyone brings a box that doesnt need a rebuild (not happened yet that I remember), pay for a seal kit, reseal the box, and take back your $300 wink.gif No need to pay if you dont need to build. Right?

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Jan 30 2011, 10:03 PM

My house is available!! I think Disco-bay will have lots of attendees!! I know Me, Lennie & mayby the other Jeff and Jeeper John have trans needs!!

Sounds good, lets discuss particulars behind the scenes. Are you the one that originally volunteered and posted that nice pic of your back deck???

That sounds more than fair, let me know where and when.
mines got 112k miles now, hopefully won't need too much. The peace of mind would be worth it, plus i'd love to tear apart a transmission with someone there to keep me from f#*#ing it up!

Generally speaking, people tend to need 2 bands, 2 sets of teeth, and seal kit (I can get for you) at the minimum. Often the lower intermediate plate bearing is needed. This is the typical. If you buy new vs used the prices vary a lot. If you buy used from me at/for the clinic I always cut you a price break (not looking to jack the price up once I have you in need). Feel free to contact me fro pricing and purchasing. You are welcome to buy now when you pay for your tuition. I have limited qty of used stuff and it will be getting less at time and clinics move on. I will try to replenish, but can not promise. Prices for new are changing constantly as well. I can get new for wholesale for ya, but on many parts I would recommend used as they are not inferior and are cheaper.

Posted by: zx-niner Jan 31 2011, 08:05 AM

Either of those weekends sound okay for me. I will have a transmission to go through. Out of curiousity, what is the timing on the workshop? Is it a one-day thing either Saturday or Sunday? Friday night and Saturday? Two-days, both Saturday and Sunday?

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 31 2011, 08:08 AM

Sat all day and Sun all day. I have never had anyone left behind smile.gif

Posted by: tradisrad Jan 31 2011, 11:03 AM

I will be rebuilding a trans in the future, but $300 seems a little steep. I guess the question I have is will the clinic have more benefits than the CD I purchased?

Mike,

What is typical cost on parts that need replacing?

Im not sure if I want to fork the cost to rebuild my box... Im changing trani's sometime this year and dont think I would get it back...

I DO know that I will be attending the clinic! 45 mins from my house? Hell ya. I may even have my car done by then. (Why do events always have to be in hot weather? Arg..)

Posted by: underthetire Jan 31 2011, 11:17 AM

Early June shouldn't be too hot. Probably upper 80's. DB usually gets a nice delta breeze. July and august can cause your ear wax to melt...

Posted by: toon1 Jan 31 2011, 11:56 AM

I don't have a trans to rebuild but would like to sit in and watch and listen.

Would this be ok?

Well, it depends on your perspective. At the clinic you finish with a rebuilt transmission that you did. The parts you need are there for you. I am there to answer all questions and clarify anything that may not be clear. The DVD is great, but would you rather learn via DVD or hands on with your box being done at the end of the weekend? I have done several of these and have nothing but accolades from attendees.

Typical parts are as listed previously. Typical cost is about $600-650 with the max no more than $1000 if you had to buy EVERYTHING used from me as I can cap the price and still provide the parts. Again, not looking to fleece anyone.

The big part is 1st gear slider. It lists for about $500 on its own. I have a few good used for much less. I can get new ones for whole sale, not sure what the price is currently, but I can call.

Andy, I'll PM you.

For the others, it is happening so it is time to get your funds in order. Parts are first come first served and the good used 1st gear sliders are the 1st to dry up. Already have one sold to the first participant smile.gif I do refund purchase prices on parts not needed. I will guide you and generally it is only one part that may need refunding.

Is this cost (600-650) the total including the 300 or is that the total of just parts.
i'm in, I need to know where when and how much to send you, I would be buying used parts from you.

Thanks, another Jeff

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 31 2011, 09:12 PM

I recalculated the parts cost and $740 is the top normal if you need a bearing and score a good used first. If you buy a new 1st slider it will cost more, of course. The $740 price is for the following (all used except the seal kit):

2 dog teeth
2 bands
1 pinion bearing
1 1st slider
Seal kit
Tuition

If you do not need the bearing then it is $650. Not bad, eh? If you have to buy a new 1st slider I work with you to keep prices down on what I have control over. I have a few good sliders for sale, only sold one for this clinic about an hour ago.

I'm in. Do you want PayPal for the tuition? I'd rather do it now and get it out of the way. Plus it makes it more difficult for other plans to intercede! If we can pay now, is there a PayPal account?

And is it best to estimate parts costs and pay now to get your lowest prices, refundable if not needed.

Posted by: cobra94563 Jan 31 2011, 11:24 PM

I would like to watch, but if I can source a trans and H gearset by that time, I'd like to rebuild.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 1 2011, 07:00 AM

Paypal charges too much in fees. Personal checks are fine, or MO. The $740 is best price until the parts are gone, then it becomes what ever I can get new replacements for, or if I can source more good used. For payment info, PM me and I will get you on the list and assemble a parts package. Yes, I do refund parts prices if not needed.

In the past, I have had people pull their gear stacks (those that had them out to do so) and take pics so I could tell them what they needed. Instructions for pulling the stack are in my rebuild link in my sig.

Posted by: kg6dxn Feb 1 2011, 08:10 PM

I think I will come watch. My tranny doesn't need rebuilding. I just need to swap my nose cone. I do have a core tranny to donate (minus nose cone) output hubs are missing.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 2 2011, 04:09 PM

The typical thing people like with bigger engines is a taller 5th gear for lower RPM in the form of a flipped H or HB gear set. You can get more exotic, but this it the typical, easy thing. If you just want to switch a gear in a box we already built, just bring it by at no charge. The work is negligible and not worthy of a fee.

Well Dr. Evil, I'm looking forward to you telling me what 5th gear I have. My box was rebuilt by a former owner and a taller 5th was installed. I have a little whine in 5th, maybe a flipped H? Sometimes it is a little stif going into 2nd but no grinding. If I shift to 1st, then into 2nd, super smooth.

From those pics alone I see that you need:

1st teeth
2nd teeth
3rd band
2nd band

Take off 1st gear slider and photo the teeth and band. It is only one 13mm bolt.

Your transmission lived a good life. Your 1st slider is actually reusable smilie_pokal.gif

Your 1st band is in good shape as well, which leads me to believe that someone was in there at one point in the last 10 years. Your 1st teeth still look shot. This is not the normal wear pattern. It usually goes: band-->teeth--> slider. This also just so happens to be the cost curve as well with the cheapest part wearing first.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 14 2011, 07:31 AM

Pics of the teeth on second gear slider would be helpful.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 15 2011, 04:53 PM

It wont shift into 2nd because it is already in 4th. You need to center the rod that actuates 4-5 and then shift into 3rd. smile.gif

Mike,
What if you need to change out the intermediate plate. Is that something that can be done in this clinic? Isn't there a lot of fussing with pinon depth or something equally difficult sounding?

*why the intermediate plate...person who was last in my box yielded the threads on the I-plate for the plug cover on the detent ball/springs...haven't filled it yet and run it to see if it leaks or not.

The dog teeth on 2nd are worn. The band on 2nd is done. The teeth on the 2-3 slider, 2nd gear side are not visualized so I can not make a call on those. If there are pointy like on the 3rd gear side then they are OK, but I would bet not. I would recommend a replace of the aforementioned parts.

Hrm....
This would be my birthday weekend.
I could fly out and back for ~500, and just hang out and meet some of the left coast crew....

Kinda tempting....

Another try at the 2d gear side of the 2d/3rd slider. Best angle I think is through the hole in the intermediate plate:

Hey Doc,
Between Jeff, Dave, and myself (who have not registered yet) we have at least four cores (maybe more). Would you like to look at those to see what is usable?

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 23 2011, 08:36 PM

I only need to see the ones you are rebuilding so I can tell you what you need. At that point we can look at the other cores and see if they have parts to satisfy your needs.
The first thing to consider is if the pinion is good.

Posted by: kg6dxn Feb 23 2011, 09:52 PM

Dr.

I'm only planning to swap my tail piece. One of the mounting ears is cracked. I do have a core tranny. Where can I get the gasket kit?

BTW, have you decided when you want to fly? PM me your info when ready.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 23 2011, 10:04 PM

Will be in touch. For gasket kits, check out GPR smile.gif Tell them I sent you. Or, I can get them for you (about the same price).

Also, now that I have the ability to burn my own DVDs, I will be including my transmission rebuild course DVD in the tuition for those who dont already have it smile.gif I will bring them with me.

Posted by: Gudhjem Mar 9 2011, 06:58 PM

Doc, I'd like to remove the ring and pinion from the case to make cleaning easier. I take it removing, well, re-installing, the R&P is no problem, right? I just pull it out the side and put it back in the same way. Just checking before I screw it up.

I have some very bad news dry.gif We had our scheduling meeting last night and shit got bumped around. Even though I told the upper years that I spent money and had obligations, they scheduled me for med service during my time off for this clinic and will comp me in week after next. I didnt need the week after next off!

I am so sorry about this. I guess this is what I get for trying to do too many things at once. I will of course refund all of the $$ as soon as I can regenerate it (some will be delayed, if you dont mind then speak up so I know who needs it back first).

I highly recommend pulling your side cover plate to inspect your pinion gear prior to the clinic to see if there will be a problem with your gear box. I have spare R/P but will not bring them with me unless I know that they are needed.

If you dont know how to pull the side cover, let me know and I will post a how to.

I'm bringing both my trannys. One is for parts although my good trany is still good(just a cracked mount). I may also have some extra parts in my spare if needed.

Posted by: dem Apr 15 2011, 08:13 PM

Okay, I got wifely approval to spend the weekend in the middle of no where playing with old porsche parts..

What do I need to do?

I have a spare, undrained trans. What do I need to do with it before bringing it over?

I've also got a decent used spare slider & 1st, if I don't need it, I'll sell it to someone who does.

Dennis

I will try to get a pictorial up on how to inspect the pinion. That is the main thing that needs to be done before.

Long time lurker here. Bought a '74 1.8L in desperate need of some TLC recently. First, let me thank everyone who has posted and is active on 914world. I have learned so much about my 914. It's simply awesome that we are keeping these great cars alive.

Sent my check in a while ago. Picked up an old used 901 side-shifter cheap. I'm hoping that I can get some replacement parts out of it, at the very least. See everyone at the clinic.

Dr.Evil: will you have extra DVDs at the clinic? The one I have skips in certain parts, making it miss a sentence or two.

By the way, I'm in Santa Clara, CA.

Posted by: Dr Evil May 2 2011, 12:05 AM

Fernando, I will have DVDs at the clinic. I will give you another copy then, or mail one out now if you prefer. Sorry for the recording error.

Cost is $300 per person, unlimited transmissions. I have good used parts, and new parts will be at whole sale with 0% mark-up. If you are not building, it is free to watch. I supply special tools, instruction, parts, noxious fumes. smile.gif

Price includes stainless hardware, cleaner, rags, basins, gloves, transmission rebuild DVD for those who dont already have it.

I skimmed through the posts and did not see anywhere the hours for this clinic. I'm assuming its a 9am-5pm type of thing for each day. The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to attend, but I do have an appointment in Stockton at 7pm on Saturday, so I'd have to leave about 4-5pm to go get ready. Does that leave me enough time or is this thing a day and evening thing on Saturday and I'd miss all the action.

I did mine at the last clinic and left at 5:00 with a complete transmission!

Yeah, but I have to get into a suit, and I don't imagine I'll be working in my suit at the clinic. I also have to pick up my gf, but thanks, at least it gives me hope that I won't be missing out on something if I sign up.

June 11 is coming quick! I don't see my name on the tuition paid list, but hopefully the good doctor will update it.

Other than what's already shown in the Haynes manual method or the pelican write-up, does anyone have some tips and tricks for dropping the transmission (+engine)? I'll have to plan this out in preparation for the class. I have all the typical garage tools: plenty of jack-stands, 2 jacks, a furniture dolly, creeper, etc.

Thanks!

This brings up a good point that I should have thought to include in other clinics. I can easily rebuild a few gear boxes whilst teaching others. As such, if people can not make it they can still send their boxes and parts ahead and I will take care of it. I will gladly do this for Dem. I can fit a few more in if there is a need.

Plus, it gives the spectators something to do as I enlist them to work happy11.gif

Dem, I am also willing to take your transmission and be a back-up if you run into any difficulties. I am planning to take my car's tranny (need to pull it out at home) and a spare tranny (possibly rebuildable; if not, for spare parts). Easy to fit a third in my SUV.

I'm in Santa Clara, close to El Camino and San Tomas.

To all of those who will be attending this clinic, please send me a PM and I will reply with the location information, phone numbers and a mapquest link to my house!

As an overview,

I am located 30 minutes West of Highway 5 and Stockton on Highway 4!

From the West I am located 35 minutes East of Antioch near Brentwood. You take the Highway 4 to the Highway 4 Bypass and follow the signs to Discovery Bay/Stockton Left at Marsh Creek Rd, Turn Right at Highway 4 and keep Left twards Stockton!

Or if you are driving a Teener you might enjoy taking Marsh Creek Road East from Walnut Creek or Concord all the way!! driving.gif Quite a twisty road around Mt. Diablo!! piratenanner.gif

If you are on 580 you would exit North on Vasco Road and turn Right on Marsh Creek Road until you hit Highway 4 and turn Right! Follow Highway 4 East (keep to the Left) a few miles to Discovery Bay! There is a slightly quicker way (about 4 minutes) but it is complicated and alot of people get lost!!

I drive to SF every Sunday and home every Monday so I know it takes about 1 3/4 hours or less with no traffic from down town SF to my front door!

Livermore is about 35 minutes

Walnut Creek is about 45-50 on Marsh Creek Rd

I am looking forward to making this a good experience for everyone involved! I am planning on Smoking some tri-tip so if anyone wants to bring side dishes and snack stuff that would be great!! beerchug.gif chowtime.gif

I am looking for a core transmission to rebuild and stick into JimTab's car so if anyone has a spare, think of me.

Jeff, how many boxes have you received? I sent one and one was sent from WA.

I have a possible core. It is missing the output hubs and I need the tail cone because my mounting ear is cracked. The case and intermediate plate look good. I'm bringing it anyway.

Box I sent should arrive on Wednesday.

@Dr.Evil. I found your dignity and self-respect and put them in the box too. Thought I found your VIRGINITY, but turned out to be a dead skunk..... sheeplove.gif

I have only received one box so far!

AND I need a tail cone also!! I bought one from a local guy and after closer inspection it is cracked!! sad.gif

I have two transmissions but I think they are both in "rebuildable condition" so unless one is shot then it wont be a core yet! We will see!

OK, some logistical clarifications need to be made and planned.

Last mention was that Mike was picking us up from OAK, is this still happening? He does know the flight info since he is the one that booked it. Are we staying at Mike's place Fri night and departing to Jeffs Sat morning for the clinic? I know I originally said I would rent a car, but plans have changed....and I forgot to update anyone (my bad).

Next is the transit over to Pacifica to JimTab's place. It is 77mi away. Anyone heading back that way Sun? Some options discussed - Jeff drops us off (long drive, round trip), Jim picks us up (long drive, round trip), Jeff drops us off at BART and we take that over to Colma for Jim to pick us up (long BART ride with all our stuff, best deal, wife will likely hate me).

Let me know your thoughts.

If you are bringing a transmission to the clinic please try to bring a table or small work bench along so you have your own space to lay out and clean your parts! FERG.gif

No room at my house due to inlaws here for Son's graduation. I can get you out to Jeff's Friday if he has room for you.

OK pulled one of my stacks today and inspected it! Everything looks bad, 1st gear dog teeth and 1st gear slider are toast. The 5th teeth look slightly worn but not bad!

It has what looks like 2 new syncros and 1 half worn, one that is buggered up from the 1 gear slider and dog teeth!

I am unable to slide back an forth into 2nd & 3rd so I am not sure whats up with that!

So it looks like I have a core to work with, I hope the other one is in better shape!!

Wish me luck wacko.gif

When I checked his flight out of Pitt, the airline said delayed. When I check an hour later it said early. He was scheduled to arrive in Vegas at 7:55pm. Sounds like he is on time. I'm just glad the tickets worked out. I never bought tickets for someone on the other side of the country before... beerchug.gif

Don't forget a small folding table if you have one! It will make your space more comfortable!!

You might think about draining the fluid before you leave so you don't risk it leaking all over your transportation!!

Trannies have been drained. I'm bringing two folding tables. They're pretty flimsy, but I think I can hold one tranny on each while working.

See you all tomorrow.

Bringing side dish, a couple bottles of wine (not a big beer drinker), two transmission, tools, working cart, stool for resting, rags, gasket sets, more tools, two short 2x4 boards, and several boxes of free-to-good-home small, miscellaneous 914 parts from when I wasn't able to get to McMark's swap meet.

Thank you so much Dr. Mike and the host Jeff. Jeff's house is awesome and his BBQ meat is even better.

Thanks to all, Chris

Thanks Mike for your help finishing up the final assembly of my side shifter. Thanks Lennie for helping me put together the gear stacks. I was the slow one. It took 3 trannys to finally get the third one to go back together with good parts.

I enjoyed the weekend. Thanks Jeff for hosting the clinic and thanks Mike for the expert advice and putting up with all of my questions.

I don't know if I could put one back together without the experts but at least I got an idea of what it takes to do one.

A final update. I want to thank all of you who participated and made this a worth while event. This was by far the roughest one in regards to parts that I have done. I was spread too thin from working 13+hours a day, including the morning of the day I left, and then having a clinic a month before. Luckily, everyone was taken care of. smile.gif Other than parts mixups that were solved, the clinic was a smashing success!

Jeff, thanks for hosting. Your place is almost as awesome as you are smile.gif

Mike, thanks for the tickets and for the pickup from the airport and shuttle to Jeff's.

These events are pricey to do so participation and part sales really allow things to happen. I just picked the two cats and dog up from the kennel...$470. Parking fee....$74. Rental car for one day...$94 (I'll bitch about this in a different thread in the sandbox). dry.gif

I was fortunate enough to have old friends that lived near GPR so that I could go down there and do some work for the GPR gang. Sorted out their inventory of cores, good used parts, and rebuilt a gear box for them to sell. The money I made doing that has offset the cost of the whole week significantly. smile.gif And, it was great to help out a vendor that I believe in.

I look forward to the next time we can do this!
