Don't know if I'll have a tranny to do, but I'm in for the eating, drinking and stories
Jakes in great, but I guess we'll see who steps up to the plate with a shop

Where in the Pacific North West?
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 07:57 PM
Last time was just north of Portland in Battlefield, WA.
Posted by: PanelBilly Jan 30 2011, 07:58 PM
You know... where you visit to breath air that doesn't smell
Posted by: KELTY360 Jan 30 2011, 08:02 PM
I'm in and could offer my place to hold it. I don't think my set-up is as good as Jake's, but I think it would work. I'm in Renton, a short way off I405.
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 08:04 PM
We can keep that in mind. There is also Mr. 242's place, supposedly. I am not worried about a venue, just what dates. Once we commit to dates, I can collect fees, buy tickets, and start to get parts together. The sooner the better since I am going to do 3 of these and that will clean out some used parts stores. I am hoping to get some parts at Hershey in April, too.
Posted by: Tom Jan 30 2011, 08:25 PM
Dr. Evil,
Would love to meet you and see what goes on in the transmission also. Don't need a rebuild right now, so does it cost to just come and be a lookie loo? I could maybe help others if needed.
Just wondering,
Tom

Watchers are free. I posted in in the first post, too
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 08:37 PM
More info:
I will always advise a look-see inside the box. If anyone brings a box that doesnt need a rebuild (not happened yet that I remember), pay for a seal kit, reseal the box, and take back your $300 No need to pay if you dont need to build. Right?
Posted by: Eddie914 Jan 30 2011, 08:43 PM
I'm in for May. I have two boxes that are both in need of work.
Cheers,
Eddie

Your welcome to have it here at my place again! That was a freakn blast!
Posted by: Mr.242 Jan 30 2011, 08:48 PM
It's not my place, but 6Freak said he can host.
Dr.Evil wanted to spend some time in Seattle and I have offered up the Beach house for him and his wife to enjoy while here.
John's was great; just 2 hours away from Seattle for Dr. Evil and the Beach house.
I'll bring BBQ if people are interested in chippin in for a meal and I will que it up; it's a PNW Teener thing.
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 08:52 PM
Mark made some insane food last time! I think we have to have it at Johns, then afterward, Noel and I will stick around the area for a few days and do some sight seeing. We will be in touch, Mark
Oysters!
Posted by: Mr.242 Jan 30 2011, 08:59 PM
Oysters and now my new thing......competition BBQ Ribs and Pulled Pork! Pretty darn good, but need to guage interest to see if people want to chip in some money for a meal. Meat is not free.
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 09:02 PM
Ya, and I hear you cant beat your meat
Two things I love, oysters and competition BBQ. You may be reason enough to move out there when I am done here
Posted by: montoya 73 2.0 Jan 30 2011, 09:04 PM
Mark, You popped my "non-oyster" eating cherry self! They were great! Oh and Billy's Atomic Turds were good too! Can't forget about Johns waffles for breakfast! It was a great time and great company! I will go either place to hang out with you all. I will bring my new big bottles of Vodka and Brandy. Jamie can bring his Cherry Pepsi and all will be right with the universe!
Does anyone have a extra sideshifter I can buy for this build? I like having extra's sitting on my shelf! PM me if you do, 73' preferable.
I'm in for a rebuild Herr Doctor!
I'll chip in for some ribs and oysters!
Posted by: BKLA Jan 30 2011, 09:04 PM
I'm interested as I couldn't make the first one out here. Have two boxes that are unknowns. Have new intermediate plate and diff covers that need to be released from thier cardboard box incarceration
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 09:13 PM
The best time for me would be the 7th and 8th since I can then just relax and tour with the missus. So, these are now the dates. As soon as I hear back from John, it is on. We have 2 standby venues as well so be assured this will happen!
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 09:13 PM
The Atomic Turds were from Todd
Posted by: rohar Jan 30 2011, 09:15 PM
I'd love to show up and meet and greet. Don't have any tranny problems to resolve. Need another core tranny? It's just sitting there and it'd be better to give it to a good home than try and sell it in this town
Posted by: Daiberl Jan 30 2011, 09:16 PM
In, hope that nothing work related comes up, I assume my tranny needs a rebuild (didn't drive the car so far ) since the car was stored for more than 20 years.

I've got an extra sideshift Drew no problem.
I will bring 2 to rebuild myself.
I was also hoping to bring one that the good DR might rebuild as a prize for WCR?

Hell ya! If you spot me some parts, it is a deal. I dont see an issue and it saves on shipping

I will bring the tranny for the WCR rebuild, my 2 tranny's I will rebuild (& yes I will keep the parts seperate this time
) plus at least 2 tailshifts for parts. I also have a tub with misc gears/ parts from last time. We should have no problem having used parts for use

NP. It's a tail shifter, but there's gotta be some good parts in there right? All I ask is you guys leave the tranny on the Dodge alone!
Posted by: PeeGreen 914 Jan 30 2011, 10:38 PM
I don't know if you guys are interested but I can ask my brother if we can use his shop in North Seattle. It is a full shop with many lifts and one of the mechanics in a big 914 wrench. I could also talk to Dave at Triad and see if he wants to hold it there. Let me know if you want me to look into these. I can say that I know one of these will work for sure but if you have a site picked out cool.
Mike, you and your wife are invited to stay at my parents house for a day or two while up here as well. They live right on the bluff looking over the water in Mukilteo. They are used to visitors and they will likely be up at their cabin anyway.
Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 30 2011, 10:46 PM
Optimal would be John's, but we shall see. Those places seem nice
Maybe have to take you up on Mukilteo.

What would it take to get you to hold this in the Seattle area? I could bring pig and a smoker!
/I can write the trip off if I spend a day in the Bellevue office.

you can google map:
4619 Baker Dr.
Everett, WA 98203
Yeah, I know, I said Mukilteo but the address says Everett. It's a technicality
The shop in North Seattle is on 79th and Greenwood. 7900 Greenwood Ave N. I will check with Matt tomorrow to see how he feels about it.
Posted by: rdauenhauer Jan 30 2011, 11:26 PM
Ya last one at Johns was the bomb!
Like Jamie Ive been hording 901's
At least 4 (pair side, pair tail) so spares galore!
Dont forget the cee-gars!

Generally speaking, people tend to need 2 bands, 2 sets of teeth, and seal kit (I can get for you) at the minimum. Often the lower intermediate plate bearing is needed. This is the typical. If you buy new vs used the prices vary a lot. If you buy used from me at/for the clinic I always cut you a price break (not looking to jack the price up once I have you in need). Feel free to contact me fro pricing and purchasing. You are welcome to buy now when you pay for your tuition. I have limited qty of used stuff and it will be getting less at time and clinics move on. I will try to replenish, but can not promise. Prices for new are changing constantly as well. I can get new for wholesale for ya, but on many parts I would recommend used as they are not inferior and are cheaper.
Posted by: Mr.242 Jan 31 2011, 08:44 AM
DR. EVIL....stay where you want and I will gladly grab you a bucket of oysters* so you may partake where ever your head my rest! (*User assumes ALL liability of fertility issues and anything lasting longer than 4 hrs)

Just heard from John, those dates wont work for him. So, one of the other venues will have to work. Let me read the thread and list them so I can debate what one will work best.
Places that have accommodations for me and the missus to stay, a place to cook/eat, beer fridge/cooler, place for bonfire and drinking with get top vote

Doc, Is there a size on those large retainer ring pliers? Or are they just Big Fuching Pliers?

I'll keep my eyes on this thread, whenever it is, I'll make it.

Sorry fella's.
Wish I could host this party again. It was a blast.
Posted by: PeeGreen 914 Jan 31 2011, 09:40 PM
Okay Mike, the shop in Seattle is out due to my brother not knowing if there will be enough space and the good ol liability deal. However, Dave, the owner of Triad is situated in Lacey and says he would welcome the clinic at his shop. He has a few spare boxes there as well.

Hey Doc, You can have all that at my place but I'm way off the beaten path
on the Olympic Peninsula, 15 mi before Sequim. There is also a nice Casino 5 mi down the road.
I'm interested in your class, if it's closer to Seattle or in my Garage

The people decide. Crandle's house is in the mix as well. Where will people go?
Posted by: PeeGreen 914 Jan 31 2011, 10:51 PM
Tony lives in a beautiful area but it is a ways out of the way. Crandall lives in a easy place to go and is in the middle. Triad is a bit closer to Oregon for the Oregonians that would like to come and has a nice shop.
I down for all of the above

I will go wherever I can park my jeep to sleep, drink, eat and have fun! Oh yeah, Rebuild a Transmission too! Is Griots garage around there?
Where are you located Crandel Clan? I'm kinda scared, It's like the roosters coming to the wolves den?
It's a 8+ hr. drive for me to Seattle!
Posted by: Mr.242 Jan 31 2011, 11:23 PM
I chatted with my bro 6Freak and he is celebrating his son's 18th Birthday tonite. He said he does have room to host and will have a location to have people around to talk a good story, bonfire, and lie.
He has lots of room for camp trailers, tents, etc. AND a couple teenage boys who would make perfect designated drivers if someone needed a ride to a hotel after some
Triad is a good location...might be lacking the bonfire story telling part.
But sounds like we got some TRANNY stuff happen'n for sure.
Posted by: plays with cars Jan 31 2011, 11:38 PM
Where ever you do it, please make sure it has a fence. Need a place that those of us who can't decide if we want to rebuild or not can hang out. (get it? on the fence).
Seriously though, how many trannys can one expect to be able to do in a day?
Posted by: montoya 73 2.0 Jan 31 2011, 11:40 PM
One can be done on Saturday and one on Sunday! I've seen it and helped with it.

The good news is....I'm in. I'll probably be bringing two boxes; one out of my car and the other is a reportedly good box that I'd been planning on putting in as is.

Having the date in the title, you expect me to be able to notice things like that?
Can I just bring the transmission I did last time. It's never been in the car, but I was too drunk to remember anything I did. I sure would like to learn something this time.
Hey anybody got one that you want me to assemble? Free labor here, I'll work for beer.....shit then I won't remember what I did

Will figure out attendance totals as the date gets closer.....dinner will be served.
Because if we eat at lunch no one will get any work done and the smell factory Dr. will not make it safe inside the garage.
Need meat? I'm sitting on two cut home grown piggies in the deep freeze
There's some beef laying around too. The beef ribs are 3" thick.

I figured that the doc would want to start at 9am. He did (tryed) the same thing last clinic.

I've got some spare parts and some tools I can bring over including a 1st gear slider welded to a pipe and a coupe of big sockets. I can provide a bed in giggle. Maybe I'll see about some beer from the local brewery.
I don't think I'll have any projects but, it's great fun watching other people work and there is nothing better than watching other people sweat.

Good news though, I'm hooking up with Jeff (Sixnotfour) this week to get the last parts of my motor, final suspension pieces are on order but back ordered until end of the month. The excuses are going away quickly. Until then I'll be running with you in GTU in the 4-cyl because I think the -6 will be running this year.
One outstanding wish is to build a box for the -6 instead of running the stock -4 box that's in it now. The doctor's clinic is timely.

Doc,
Saturday was the first time I've touched my 914 in 9 weeks. It's been in winter storage. I still want you to go through the tranny and this clinic would probably be my best opportunity to pull it and let you have at it. Time hasn't been a friend of mine lately though.
Question:
If I show up and drink beer, generally stay out of the way, does it cost the standard fee? (totally willing to pay whatever, not trying to be cheap here). I'm not really interested in learning how to rebuild a tranny. Just want to hand over the mulah and have it done. I'd F' it up.
If I can actually pull my tranny out, but too lazy and stupid to go through it at the clinic, would you be willing to go through it? Of course paying the going rate.
I need to see if I can get my 914 back home and up on jackstands.
Thanks for putting all this together. What a unique event!

I may ask if I can codrive with you a few events if you don't mind. My brother in law should have his car up and running and it too will be in GTU. I know he wants me to codrive with him but until his car is running I am GTU 914less.

Dan, if I build it there is a fee, and I will do that for you there. No worries. PM and we will sort it out. Maybe I will have my wife build it since she will be there
If you are short on time, I would understand me doing it. Otherwise, it doesnt make sense as I have taught some pretty dense people how (its ok, they dont know that I am talking about them
).
I guess since Griots is so close I would like to see it as well, but it would be a short trip.
Jon, when is AX practice? Depends. The weekend is dedicated to teaching/learning with some drinking and eating
Dave, you are always welcome. Not sure if I need anything. I'll let you know.
Sorry Dr. I was asking Crandall if he was going to be there. There is no PCA AX conflicting with this event and that's why I know I will be at the clinic

I'm going to put a 19mm sway bar back on the front of the red car and run GTU until I get the -6 going (if I get the -6 going). John, get a bar for yours and let's go scare the fully prep'd GTU cars like Crandal's.
See you guys out there Saturday? I need to finish adjusting valves and get the car off of the jack stands to see if adjusting the shifter got me 2nd and 4th gear back. After the last event I had to use the odd number gears to get home. Still not sure exactly what went wrong.

I will send the check this week, I'm also looking for a transmission to rebuild since I don't want to rebuild the one I have in the car at the moment, I hope to get the car up and running in the next weeks so I don't want to drop the tranny in April (no time, a lot of travel). Who has a tranny which need a rebuild and is willing to sell?
I gotta call bullshit on this... Tabor pulled his transmission in the morning of day one of the Sonoma clinic, rebuilt it and put it back in and drove home on day two... Man-up and do the same for gosh sakes! Tabors been known to wear skirts now and then!!!
Oh Please Rob.... You can always use a spare tranny
Jon on his day off...
Taking Casual Friday to a whole new level.

DAMN IT!!!!
I still need to rebuild mine, this would've been the perfect opportunity. Got the money.....but now I won't have the time as I'll be working a lot of OT (7 days a week most likely) during that time.
Had a blast at the last one. Would've liked to meet up with Montoya & Jamie again. Oh well, maybe next time.
And I think I'm going to miss WCR because of work too.

Pull your stacks so that we can at least inspect the pinion teeth and make sure your boxes are worthy of rebuild or as parts.

and just bought a spare box on Evilbay. it should arrive this week, I have to let the smoke clear before I drop 3 bills so momma dosn't come unglued. If the air miles thing dosn't work out let me know, I have a few 10K I could spare.

Would anyone be up for tackling my trans for me if I kick the doc some scratch???
I'd need to get it pulled, drained, cleaned & delivered before April 15th. After that, I have no time until June.

Cool. Thanks Jon. I'll decide for certain w/in the next week and get back to you (and Doc). I should hopefully have enough of the garage cleaned out that I can get the car in this weekend (that's the plan anyways). Sitting outside this winter has taken it's toll on her.
I've got some work ahead of me if I have a snowballs chance in hell at WCR (assuming I can even get away from work).

Get off your ass Chris. I may not be able to attend the Clinic either.
I just had a family thing come up that will need the money instead. Nothing crazy, just need to funnel the money elsewhere. But there is a glimmer of hope I still can make it!
I still want the trans Jamie (sent Doc the money) and I still want the parts Doc. It's the registration and travel money that is being sent elsewhere.

My father and I are planning to attend. One of is going to be a paying student the other an observer, one box as of now. When is the dead line to pay? I start work next week, so I will have to wait for my paycheck or sell some parts before then. Anyone looking for some stainless heat exchangers in washington?

Are the stainless heat exchangers for a 2.0??? If yes I might be interested, are they in good shape?
Posted by: Loser_Cruiser Feb 24 2011, 12:41 PM
Not to hijack but to answer No. They are the 1.7/1.8 flavor. In very good shape though.
Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 24 2011, 03:53 PM
FYI, if you want to do two people working on the same box, that is cool for the price of one. Basically, dont abuse me If you are all in it to build one box and learn, that is fine and no need to pay for two people. The payment is for one or more boxes. One or more per person, etc.
Glad that people getting things figured out. Chris, Jon and I will take good care of you.
If anyone can not make it and needs one built, I can do it there.
As for deadline, I think I will have enough soon to make it worth while so just do the best you can.

If I can't find an H gear, the tranny will stay in this summer and I'll just have to tackle it another time.

I could use one too. Maybe even 2 but I doubt I can spare the coin before. Maybe a group buy on "H" gears??? What say you Evil
Posted by: plays with cars Mar 9 2011, 11:49 PM
How about a 'U' fourth? How hard and $$$ are they to come by? Playing with the gear charts I've convinced myself that an A-GA-N-U-ZA box is the right compromise for me to keep a decent cruising box with good splits for my 2.4E motor. I have all of the gears but the 'U'.
Also, at some point in the future I know I will "need" (at least that's how my wife always says it with her fingers quoting in the air around the word need). Anyway, I will "need" a locking differential. If I set up the box now with an open diff, how much rework is there to put another diff in it at a later date? Should I just wait to do it all at once?
Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 10 2011, 01:16 AM
I am working on an H gear for Dan. Sale is pending, I have to buy the whole tranz.
A U gear is harder to come buy than an S gear. Take an S gear and flip it and you have a U. However, a U gear is one tooth away from a V gear, which is a stock 914 gear. I doubt you would feel the difference....other than in your wallet.
Why anyone would want a locked diff is beyond me, unless you mean an LSD. If you plan on messing with your diff, time to do it is when the tools and people are available, IMHO.

Go get my 914 and for a few weeks. Around the last week in April, pull the tranny and clean it up for the clinic.
I'll send my starter out for re-furb while I'm at it and probably do a new clutch.
Posted by: Eddie914 Mar 26 2011, 02:28 PM
I am definitely in for the clinic since my current transaxle went KABLAMOO yesterday at the track.
I will be bringing at least two. The previous trans started getting very noisy and dropping lots of junk in the oil about two years ago. I replaced it with the ebay unit that went KABLAMOO yesterday when it lost reverse and 1st (backed out speedo unit?)
I will be trading for another replacement tomorrow. Depending on how it tests. I may bring three.
Will Dr. Evil be bringing a supply of seals or gaskets?
Thanks
Eddie
Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 27 2011, 06:30 PM
I can bring gasket sets, but since I make no money on them and you can source them from places like GPR yourself, feel free to do so if it is jusst as easy for you.
Are you a for sure builder? I look forward to the autopsy of your broken box

I have some very bad news We had our scheduling meeting last night and shit got bumped around. Even though I told the upper years that I spent money and had obligations, they scheduled me for med service during my time off for this clinic and will comp me in week after next. I didnt need the week after next off!
I am so sorry about this. I guess this is what I get for trying to do too many things at once. I will of course refund all of the $$ as soon as I can regenerate it (some will be delayed, if you dont mind then speak up so I know who needs it back first).
This blows

If it would stop raining for even ONE FRIGGEN DAY, that'd be nice. I've driven the 914 only twice in the past 6 weeks.
I was hoping to get a little more seat time before pulling the tranny out.

Okay 914 peeps, we're talking eats and BBQ for this event. I will gladly do the prep and cooking for this event. I'll bring the Binford and have her set up for a good grubbing.
Need input on what you would like to see: Lunch or Dinner on Saturday?
I can do Baby Back Ribs or Pulled Pork Sandwhiches.
I believe I can do a whole slab of ribs + slaw + cornbread per person at $20 a person.
Dinner would be my thought, allows tending and cooking all day. Allows trannies to be complete and hands to be cleaned up. When I did my rebuild clinic it was a simple sandwhich and kept working thru the day.
Who's in?
(Dr. Evil, I will also get you some oysters for the Saturday snacks too)

With any luck, the motor & trans will be coming out tomorrow. Got my CFR engine/trans support to aid in the drop/install.

My events are ALWAYS wife friendly. All are welcome. Noel will likely get board, I will likely be somewhat less vulgar (more boring) with women around, I'll drink less, but Noel can keep the split tails company

I highly recommend pulling your side cover plate to inspect your pinion gear prior to the clinic to see if there will be a problem with your gear box. I have spare R/P but will not bring them with me unless I know that they are needed.
If you dont know how to pull the side cover, let me know and I will post a how to.

I know it. I finally got the car in the garage..........barely. And I've already started working the 65+ hour work weeks. Fortunately I've got Saturdays off (for the most part), so I'm going to try to get it pulled tomorrow.....with a bit of luck. Then I still need to get the thing cleaned up and either get it to Jon, or arrange transport of the trans to Jon's.
We'll see, I may even be able to make it on Saturday......but I likely won't know until 9pm the night before.....

Yep, here in the 'ham. There are a couple other teeners around here too. Nord has a gorgeous silver 2.0.
You should check out Chuckanut Sports Car Club if you get a chance. http://www.chuckanutscc.org/ Great group of guys. Several Porsche owners (w/o stereotypical 911 superiority syndrome), along w/ a smattering of bimmers, english jobbies and some modern japanese tech. Ended up having to get a new jack too, as mine was too small for the CFR support tool. Really not a big deal as I've been wanting one for a couple years now. This just gave me the excuse to pull the trigger.

Cool, Michelle wants to join the fun. She's always liked the local 914 crowd.
I think we got our official last drive in the 914 yesterday before the tranny comes out. The sun actually poked out and it really warmed up. We drove around for a couple of hours before some clouds started rolling back in. Nice to get a drive in before it's up on jackstands. I think that'll be this weekend?

Looks like I need to get caught up on the program. just sent in my $ to attend. I am sad to report that I am required to attend a Rotary event Saturday night. It the annual auction and since someone else paid for my dinner, I can't stiff them. I might be able to come back laer that evening. If this clinic is anything like the last one showing up at 11:00 for a late night toast (or three) wouldn't be out of the question.
Wasn't there a thread on what we needed to bring for snacks or splitting the cost of the potty?

So I will go with what works for me! Will take donations for the dinner meal. Will need a count on how many MOUTHS are there to eat. I will begin preparing on Wednesday before the event.
BBQer's choice
Meal:Try a little "wide open throttle" dish (grilled half shell oysters), for those who can handle it.
"Tranny Tear-down" (bacon wrapped Jalepeno's)
Working in a good "gear stack" (pile of BBQ meats)
Add a 'sychro' (slaw and/or beans)
Finally: 'cool down lap'. (driver/self sponsored cold beverage)
A custom "Dr. Evil 90w BBQ Sauce" will be created for this event (a little touch of 'shut the hell up' and a bunch of 'I'm a Doctor, trust me')
MEAT

I'd like to spectate and eat.
Is there room to set up a tent or dry place to lay out a sleeping bag? I'm trying to save my money for transmission parts for future build.
I can bring my own BEvERages (with enough to share of course) and chip in for food.

Thought I'd stop by Saturday morning to spectate/meet and great. If anyone needs a tailshifter core, I'll bring it with me but I don't want to drag it home. Thinking of throwing a pair of fattys in the cooler for the grill. One german and one mexican.

I have a tailshift that I grabbed that has the rear mounting tabs broken off. It appears this tranny sat for a long time and hasn't been used in years. I will bring that and maybe it has some good pieces in it that someone can use. Someone might be able to grab the tailcone off another and have a pretty good tranny....who knows.

There's 3 answers to that question. One'll get ya busted, the other two are a bit heavy on cholesterol and only one of those you can ever tell anyone about after indulging.
I have no intention of getting busted and we should all be able to talk about our escapades later.
A "Fatty" is a filling of your choice (I use cream cheese, jalepanios, tomatoes etc. for my "mexican" fatty) wrapped in pork sausage, then wrapped in bacon and smoked or grilled until you just HAVE to have it. Imagine what a griller would think of a turducken.
A fatty:
A german fatty is pretty much the same thing except with spatzel, sauerkraut and cheddar in the middle. Unless you're in Bavaria, then it's all those from Hessen. On the up side, you never need a compass in Germany. The wide ones are always north.

I was going to be a last minute show until last week. Doc, the Teener ran like crap in Tahoe cause she blew cylinder #4. I took her out for the first time since then and thought maybe it was just the valvesneeding adjustment. Nope! So, thanks to Jamie (jrust) I will hopefully be picking up a motor next week. Well actually the wife saw what you had told me about. She went and decided to call the guy herself and worked out a deal. It was a very nice surprise! Anyways, if things go well than I should have the Teener ready for the WCR! Sorry to be missing this event but I need a motor more than a rebuilt trans. Im sure the Doc will be out here again and I will attend that future event. Good luck and have fun everyone.

I was "suppose" to pull the tranny out this last weekend. But Saturday was 70 degrees, so we drove the 914 instead.
I'll start the pull process over the week and have it all ready by this weekend. Ensures I won't be pulling an all-nighter to be ready for the 7th.

Bad news, good news. We put an offer on a house in Lake Forest Park and the seller accepted the offer . That means I will not be able to attend the clinic and do my tranny because I don't want to drop the tranny in my car and I don't wnat to spend money at the moment to buy another tranny I will try to come down and watch for some time. Already informed Dr Evil and asked whether he will do another one next year, my tranny is leaking and the syncros are not the best, hope to be able to attend the next one.

Jamie, thanks for the offer. I simply fear that if I drop the tranny I will not be able to get it in before we move 2 weeks later (if everything works out with the bank). I also have my 996 (which is the best car I ever had) listed for sale, if I'm able to sell the car in the next week I will try to get another tranny and attend but the market for Porsche 996 is DEAD
All the people seem to fear catastrophic engine failures on 996 and Boxster, in reality these are great cars. So let's see what the next few weeks bring, I will come down, either for looking around and learning or for doing a tranny. At the end the house has priority at the moment because happy wife happy life

Good news, for you guys, the food and beer consumption, I wont be able to make it, I will be able to drop off a tail shift for parts on Friday on my way back from Sea-tac if it will be any help for parts.
Turns out I have work, travel, and work come up, I have been off for 2 weeks and when the job hits next week I have to be there.
I will make it to WCR so I will see you PNW's there.
Send me the Clinic info and I will do my best to drop off the tail shifter for parts when I travel to / from the Airport, gratis, as they say south of the border.

If there's any of you guys on the East side that don't want to drag your tranny there, I'll be in Factoria starting Thursday with the Dodge. More than happy transporting heavy stuff as it gets 20mpg up hill, down hill or towing a horse trailer. I'm gonna have to scat Saturday night, so you may end up dragging your own stuff home;)

Jon, got the trans halfway clean (not as clean as I would've liked, sorry). Going to take shower and be headed down your way.

Cool, I won't be home but just put it in front of the garage.

Beef ribs thawing. Loaf of bread for perspective. Two racks of short ribs per package.
I'll be in town Thursday night with nothing to do, so if anyone needs help pulling a tranny that late, gimme a holler!

Sorry if I missed it but has a start time been given? How late do we plan to go on Saturday? What is the plan for Sunday?
Just trying to plan, so the family can be off doing their thing during the day.

Hey! Work schedule has changed for this weekend for me.
Can I come down to watch or help. I don't have a box to rebuild,
but can make beer runs or get chips if needed. Would I be able to
get in on the BBQ? 6 Freak ( Mike ) let me know.
Posted by: Dr Evil May 2 2011, 08:56 PM
Sure
Posted by: Daiberl May 2 2011, 09:58 PM
I still plan to come down even if I don't do the transmission I will at least try to watch and learn. If everything works out we will move in 4 weeks and I can't spend the money on another tranny unless I sell the 996 but at the moment the market is really DEAD for such cars. I had a few people taking a look but nothing serious

I still need to clean the transmission up, but it's out and almost ready. I want to pull the side cover off and prep as much as I can.
Today I also decided to thwart the retarded raspy sound that farts out the bursch muffler. I added a mini-glasspack. When everything gets back together, we'll see how it sounds. Hopefully a little smoother and muffled.
Mister Evil, should I pull anything else off the transmission to help make things go easier?

I'll be there! I am bringing three transaxles.
Can I pay there or do I need to pay in advance?
The gearboxes I am bringing:
1.) This transaxle came in my teener when purchased in 2003 mated to a carbed 2.7L six. It is a tailshift transaxle that was converted to sideshift by the previous owner. It was supposedly rebuilt. It ran quiet and shifted well. The 2.7 was replaced with a 3.2 in 2006. In 2008 this transaxle began whining in 3rd gear. Oil changes revealed lots of gold colored debris. There is also a pulled stud for the sideshift console (previously repaired with a helicoil).
2.) Sideshift transaxle bought as a spare. Installed in 2008 when #1 started getting noisy. This unit ran quiet and shifted well other than 2nd gear synchromesh was a bit weak. The speedometer drive gear punched a hole in the rear case in March 2011. 1st and reverse were no longer operable. The oil revealed lots of gold colored debris. The drain plug magnet was full of silver/grey material.
3.) Sideshift transaxle bought locally in March 2011. Resealed and installed for testing purposes. Runs quiet and shifts well EXCEPT first gear does NOT engage fully. The ring and pinion look good. The oil looked fairly clean. The drain plug magnet contained a fair amount of silver/grey material.
I am hoping to be able to make one good gearbox and possibly one spare.
See you there ... if I can remember how to get to Mikes!
Cheers,
Eddie

I couldn't wait and started pulling my tranny appart last night.
Actually I pulled the side cover off, shift selector arm out (done that before to replace seals) and then pulled the back sections off. Everything looks really clean and smooth. Nothings marked or scored. It does lead me to a question about gaskets though. Note:I made sure to leave them on and intact.
Mine are yellow or tan-ish in color and I have three of them between the main case and intermediate plate. But my gasket/seal kit only has black gaskets.
I thought I have read they gasket colors (thickness) is a really big deal.
Is my seal/gasket kit worthless?

The Pirate asks the wierd guy "Aurggggh.... this bus go DOWNTOWN matey?" Which gets the Tranny to say...."Nope, but I do!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So why did the Tranny cross the road?
Cuz the Pirate and Weird Guy were both willing to share.
Posted by: Root_Werks May 6 2011, 03:42 PM
I think mine should go pretty fast. I've pulled most of it appart and inspected already. Not that I'm a tranny surgeon.
But the unit only has 100k miles on it (the whole 914 only does). It's original and doesn't look abused.
I might be able to get away with a few basic parts, slap my H and X gears on, assemble and done.
Tranny shifted perfectly, never made noise etc. So I'm hoping once Dr. Evil has a chance to look it over, he says the same thing. "Slap it back together!"
Posted by: aircooledtechguy May 6 2011, 06:40 PM
I'll be coming first thing in the morning just to watch, poke fun and hang out. Does anyone have in their parts stash a good working fresh air box for the front, or at least a good fan that they could bring with them tomorrow?? I'm in the market and will be happy to buy one if someone brings one for me. I let the smoke out of mine and they never seem to work once that happens. . .

The fricken house smells so gosh darn good and there is no BBQ meat to eat.
Are you ready?
Oh yea....about 5 dozen oysters for grilling too!
Oh man, there will be some good eats!
I feel sorry for all the guys who have to be working on their trannies.
My mouth is watering thinking about it. I'm so happy you have some goodies for lunch since I need to leave before dinner time

I'll be heading up but late. I am in Portland waiting for my kind brother to bring me the gasket kits I forgot. Guess I at least remembered them before it was to late. Just have to kill a couple hours. I'll be up late Mike. I'll just hop in the trailer to crash. Although it may be close to when you get there with the good DR . Expect me somewhere around 1am

That's it, "a weird guy, a tranny and a pirate were waiting for a bus.....
OK, you can take it from there.
The Pirate asks the wierd guy "Aurggggh.... this bus go DOWNTOWN matey?" Which gets the Tranny to say...."Nope, but I do!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So why did the Tranny cross the road?
Cuz the Pirate and Weird Guy were both willing to share.
You seem to know a lot about trannies Mark. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

This one was off jackstands and driving out at 12:29am.
29 mins off the prediction to be done at midnight. A few key people were under the thing working like crazy and hooking up all the essentials.
it was a long day and the ODOR and TOXIC released from the Dr. Evil fart factory could clear the entire building!
He's like a fricken Gremlin that has specific rules so you don't end up DEAD. However, he often doesn't warn when he let's loose. When someone turns and runs.....you too better just run. Don't wait for the smell to pierce your life.
Today will be worse because all the BBQ, Jalepeno's, and oysters have had HOURS to brew smells that a terrorist wouldn't even use on their enemies.
@Rohar. Thanks for the Fatties. Despite the threat of a cardiac arrest upon eating them......
They didn't take long to be eaten up! Pretty darn tasty.
@PanelBilly.Thanks for cutting up the Atomic Buffalo Turds! They too disappeared quickly.
@6Freak.Thanks for cleaning up your garage. It's the cleanest I have EVER seen it. The venue has held everyone and being in Tacoma, it's bonus no one got shot at or we didn't hear gun fire. Finally, your 11pm entertainment and tango with Captain Morgan was, well........artistic.
Posted by: NORD May 8 2011, 11:29 AM
I put a jar of Pickeled Herring on the table for all to enjoy and I
think shortly after the Dr. got into that is when the odor became BAD
Glad I'm not there this morning
Thanks to all that put this together. Being an observer at a clinnic
I would feel confident pulling my box apart now with the video

@Mr.242, @6Freak, one of you should grab the beef ribs in the fridge and cook them, they'll go bad in a couple of days. They're a bit fatty, but if you cook them slow they're the beef version of bacon, and who doesn't like bacon?
@NORD. If you'da given me a heads up on the pickled herring, I'da hung out 'till then and drove through the night to get home!

I appreciated the help getting me on the road. Pretty damn cool ecosystem of 914 folks.
Big THANK YOU to Mr. C and family for hosting. Also for the great BBQ.
Dr. Evil. THANK YOU. Two words for you. Gas-X and Butter. Former is....well easy to understand....second is the trans was smooth as silk on the way home.
To the guys that helped me get on the road...I owe you! I will get the shifter springs sorted out soon.
I connected one vac hose last night and found one this morning. Everything is running great now.
Best and looking forward to linking up soon. If you need anything let me know.

I'll check my little tool bag, don't think I have any extra's though.
Post Tranny Clinic update:
Tuesday I got my 914 back on the ground for the initial drive. After a little shifter adjustment, everything was 100%.
New shifter bushings
New clutch
New X 4th and flipped H 5th
Tranny didn't need any parts, so it was a simple re-seal and swap out the gears.
Gotta say, I love the new X and H gears. Very well spaced for the 2.0 engine and I have no problem pulling 5th even from 55mph on slight grades (We're basically at sea level). I drove it around Tuesday for a while and again today to work. Loving the taller gears. I can really stretch the 914 legs now without sounding like I'm going to grenade the engine.
edit: the little glass pack I welded into the Bursch system made a big difference. No more anoying raspy sounds and the whole tail pipe note is much quieter now. That combined with the lower freeway rpm's and the whole driving on long trips should be much, much more enjoyable.

I am afraid that at the end of the trip, it was not my flatus, but my emesis that will be remembered by the poor folks riding with me to the airport.....and those on the freeway near by.
I got sick on something, could have been the booze and 60+ raw oysters the night before, and on the way to the airport I proceeded to paint the side of Mark's dads truck Beef and asparagus all down the side I still feel like I have a bit of appendicitis.
The event was spectacular and could not have happened if not for the generosity of Mike (6freak) and the support of his wife Ronna who kept us all well taken care of. Nice place, nicer folks. I think poor Mike didnt know what he was in for
The vacation part was also an absolute win thanks to the aforementioned folks and Mark and Jen, Stu and Linda (let us use there smaller truck as our vehicle), Ann and Ray at the beach house, and Jakeodoule for the recommendation to stay at McMinemin's Edgefield in Portland.
Noel and I are very serious about planning on relocating to the PNW when we are able in a few years. We fell in love with the place (and the weather was deceptively nice)
There was some real talent at the clinic, too. Many picked up the lessons and went on to need only my QA with no adjustments at the end. I am very proud of that
I am still recovering from this event...I hope to be better by the next one

HELP! I was at the clinic working on the 912 tail-shift boxes, and ended up leaving my original case there for someone to take to (I think and hope) scrap. It was the almost freakishly clean one. Well, when installing the throwout bearing on my rebuilt case, the pivot ball tore completely out. I'm not thrilled about it, but it looks like I'll need to transfer all of the guts out of this case into another, and figure out somehow how to get the right intermediate gasket thickness.
Is there any chance that the someone on this thread will remember me and what happened to that case?
Thanks,

Ummm, I spent 4 years at Wa. State University from 1986-1990; we were known for parties. In fact Playboy in the fall of '86 ranked WAZZU as to be in a class all by itself when it came to partying! We were ranked, but set aside in a class all by ourselves.
During those 4 years I lived with up to 50 guys at a time in my fraternity. I've watched many a man fall to the booze and pray to god to be a minister if he let them out alive.
Then there is Dr. Evil. You guys talk about the gas...., but what comes out the other end
Put him in a class all by himself. I would have shut down and been a huddled mass. Some 60+ oysters eaten and a 750ml of whiskey later. He is a ROCK STAR.
I just can't figure out the spell he has over Noel.
But they are good together and a kick to be around. She makes him a better man.
Come back soon Doc. We're growing more oysters and we'll be ready.

Anyone else find anything odd about these comments?

Thanks,
Andy Boyd

The movies that play in my head do not ever lead me in this direction; however, you guys play any movies you choose. I'm sure the screenwrite I have is pale compared to yours!
Clearly the mention of living with 50 guys makes you push play in your head way to easily....almost naturally.
"but there's nothing wrong with that"....just know what to get you for a Christmas present now.
Wish I had some story I could tell you to ''meet
your needs" but I've got none.
Just stay with your little movies in your head....

Man, I am still suffering with gastritis after my visit to the PNW. It seems to be migrating from my stomach to my small intestines, large is next, then purge?
New twist today, my shit is grass green The water in the bowl looks like St. Patties day. Never a dull moment.

The engine is just about ready to go back in the creamsickle. I need a due date to make sure I get this done. So I picked May 31st. That will be next Tuesday. I'm going to need some help. See I only know how to pull engines out.
At my shop in Auburn. If you need directions call. Some time after work 5:00 or so.
Food and liquids will be on hand.
