914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Modifying an SC or Carrera center console for 914

Posted by: DanT Feb 12 2011, 06:58 PM

I have been thinking about using a 911 center console from an SC or 80s Carrera for my 914. Make a plate to cover the storage bin for the gauges.

using one of these smile.gif

Interesting... haven't seen that done. Will it reach the dash?

Don't know Mark...that was one of my quandaries.
I guess until I find one to test fit I won't know unless someone here has tried it.

Will also have to make a slot for the heater floor control...but that would be easy with a carbide side cut bit on the Dremel and some careful measuring.

Even if it didn't reach all the way up to the dash wouldn't be a deal breaker since they didn't reach all the way to the dash in a 911 anyway smile.gif

I am going to see if I can find a cheap test subject and see how it fits. If it works it might be a nice addition to the car. biggrin.gif

Yes, my Carrera has a center console but in the Carrera it doesn't reach the bottom of the dash as I recall... Mine is up on the lift in the garage but this is my recollection.

I am pretty sure there is something like a 2" gap between the top of the console and the bottom of the dash in an SC or Carrera.
That is where I had an aftermarket AC vent plumbed off the front bulkhead AC outlet...I had one of those in my '84 and '87 Carreras... smile.gif

I have one. Had the same idea. I've never test fit it into a 914 though. Now I don't have to. tongue.gif

T.C., perfect, do you have any other pics of the install, or can you describe how you mounted it? smile.gif

I don't have the car anymore, but kept the console for a future car. I think that is my only pic.

mounting? or was the pic just a mockup?

Posted by: McMark Feb 13 2011, 10:57 AM

Looks like there are three tabs that you could simply screw to the center tunnel.

yes, I saw those tabs on the pic I posted, just wondered if TC did anything different.
I am going to go looking for a console and will report back how it works. From TCs pic it appears to fit just about like it does on a 911. Just need to fab up a face plate to mount the gauges to, and then figure how to mount the face plate to the console...
Having one in hand will make the visualization a bit easier biggrin.gif

Dan.. do a search on 'interior' or 'getty' by user ROCKARIA. He has a 'basically' a full 911-look interior in his 914 (dash, doors, console)

It was in the car, but it has been a while. I remember the tab at the back and after seeing the pictures I now remember the tabs on the sides

thanks,
checked it out but all the pics were linked and are no longer available. sad.gif

TC, thanks. I am just going to find one on the cheap and give it a try....can't be all that difficult to make it fit. smile.gif

Making it fit was easy. Just remember to buy the SC big rubber shift boot as well - the hole in the console is big

Question for anyone who has done this.
How did you route the heater lever?

Posted by: Steve Jun 17 2018, 12:21 AM

I found other pictures including a slice for the heater lever

Awesome! Looks like just a bit of dremel work.
