Is a oil breather filter really necessary on the engine case.
Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: You need to vent your crankcase. And to avoid messes and environmental impacts, you should filter your crankcase ventilation. The best solution is to filter the vapors, drip drain it back into the case, and connect the filtered vapor to the intake so that any missed particles can be burned in combustion.

Definitely vent! Also make sure you use the factory check-valve, it keeps the crankcase from building too much pressure, which will help prevent oil leaks.
