914World.com _ 914World Garage _ My 3 speed 914

As you can tell by my name that I am new to the 914 world.

I have only 1st through 3rd gear in my transmission.

I have tried to adjust the shift linkage, but to no avail. From what I have read, it involves loosening a bolt on the shifter and turning the rod????

Can anyone direct me to a more detailed solution?

Thanks,

Hopefully this is the first of manhy posts. Maybe I can even give advice in a few years.

Hi and welcome to the club.

Do you have a Haynes book? It explains the adjustment procedure fairly well. If you own one of these cars you need one.

There are several threads on this subject (some posted last week). Use the search feature for "shifter adjustment" and read on.

Kevin, welcome! clap56.gif

It certainly sounds like an shifter adjustment issue. Under the center cushion there is a black plastic tray held in place by a couple of screws. If you remove that, there will be an access hole beneath.

That's where the majority of the shifter adjustment is done (side-to-side and fore-aft), provided that your shift bushings are in good shape.

Check the shift bushings at: the firewall, where the shift rod comes through; the shifter itself (there is a cup bushing in the base); and at the transmission where there's yet another shift bushing. Even slightly worn or cracked bushings can result in huge slop (and then poor shift adjustment).

Bottom line: Make sure that the parts are in good condition before you start adjusting anything. Otherwise, after you freshen your linkage you may have to readjust.

Hope this helps,
Lawrence

What year is your car? The adjustment is quite different between the tail-shifter ('70 to '72) and side-shifter ('73 - '76).

There are "Shifting improvements" and "Tail-shift improvements" tech articles on the Pelican Parts page... Get to the Porsche section, then scroll down to 914, and click on "tech articles". Lotsa info there.
