I searched and did not see the definitive answer... Should I lap weld my flares or butt weld them?

It's true. I'm a butt man. A lap weld may be easier and in some ways stronger, but the major drawback is it gives water somewhere to hide. Even if you seam seal the hell out of fit, metal still sweats with changes in temperature. Combine that with a seam sealed lap weld and the sweat (water) has no where to run out to. A proper lap weld ( etched primed prior to welding, and sealed afterward) will last for a long time. And assuming the car is well maintained and lived indoors
may last the rest of your life without showing any issues. But a properly done butt will never give you trouble

I've never lap welded a seam on any flares.
OTOH, it's very challenging and time consuming to grind the welds down to the uniform thickness of the sheetmetal. Most people never go that far, and many who try go too far without realizing it (until too late).

Or here's another method which will help reduce warping. The backup strip acts like a heat sink. Copper backup strips are easy to make. Get some soft copper water pipe and just hammer it flat. Leave it two layers thick. It's soft enough to form to a curved surface but rigid enough to hold the panels flush for tacking or welding with the right amount of clamps or clecos

Although Eric's example is a much clearer example of Butt.

Butt... it's what the factory did and it looks good inside the fender. You can make it smooth inside as well as outside.
Great job!!! That is the color I want mine to be!! Did you use the L96D color code to get that, or is it a modern Porsche color equivalent?? There was a nice teener on here that used Carrera GT silver, which seems a tad darker.
You really need to post more pics of your car!!!!!

I'm guessing a Brazilian, possibly a Reef model. They ALWAYS have nice trunks

After seeing Scotty's last post, I may move to Brazil. Don't tell my wife.
Or maybe I will just buy her a Brazilian workout video and a thong - much cheaper in the long run.
