914World.com _ 914World Garage _ New windshield chrome ! pg 11 post 263

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 3 2011, 08:31 AM

Ok,
I have to go to work early in the morning, so here it is.
I'm making the chrome trim that goes around the windshield. The 3 main pieces.

They will be less than $125 a set in the group buy. I'm working on the tooling to get the shape correct.

These will ship in a custom box that will protect them from damage in transit. This is a big problem with these as the metal is very soft. The boxes will run $7 each(my cost). They will weight about 1# (probably less with the box), so shipping will be pretty inexpensive USPS priority mail. Maybe $6 ish.

Sign up here if you are interested. And yes I can ship multiple sets in one box. When I have these ready for finishing I'll forward the payment info.

Thanks to all !!
Sorry to have taunted you, but I hope you find it worth the wait.

I always thought that a brushed stainless, adhesive backed, sail panel cover would look nice.
And the piece to go across the top of the "rollbar" to complete the circuit ;-)

agree.gif .... with the first post above - but as to the real front tits! biggrin.gif

As to the 2nd post above - IIRC Mark put the 73-74 Front Rubber "Tits" (Bumper Guards) on hold, in favor of some other products. I think Detoxcowboy/Joe P. was looking for them a couple of weeks ago, & he said that they're not in production yet.

Is that correct or am I misinformed Mark? confused24.gif

I'd like to see the OEM/OES style "flexible rubber shorty front spoiler" that the Porsche+Audi dealerships used to sell for our 914s back in the 70's. They were a great replacement for the front valance, were short enough to miss most driveway ramps - even when lowered in front, and were flexible to just bend back & return if not (like on those parking lot tire stops & curbs. I don't recall the PET part number for them, nor do I have an old enough PET, but will look at some old 70's & 80's Automotion & other parts catalogs when I get a chance.

Anyone know the part number for that? confused24.gif

Well a few items mentioned I'm actually working on.
But, let's just say it's location is forward of the seats.
I have a hard time keeping it a secret too.
I just want to make the announcement when production is following very shortly.
I could have announced these 4 months ago when I started on this project. I had actually Planned to have these done by the end of the year, but it wound up being much more difficult than I planned.

More shortly............

This is Mark's gig, and I ain't gonna give it away. I was hoping to help on it, but he didn't end up needing my assistance. I haven't seen the new pieces, but I can assure you that he won't put it out if it isn't of the highest quality.

I haven't talked to Mark lately, so I am only about 95% sure on my guess, but if it is what I think it is, my NLA OEM still-in-a-box XXXXX is going to be worth substantially less on eBay in the near future. And I couldn't thank him more for doing what he has done for all of us and our cars!

Ok,
I have to go to work early in the morning, so here it is.
I'm making the chrome trim that goes around the windshield. The 3 main pieces.

They will be $99 a set in the group buy. I will have the tooling complete in about 5 days and will post pictures of the prototypes and the installed parts then.

So for a total of about $112 you can all new trim that will be identical to the OEM!!!!

The forming dies will be done in about 5 days so It will be a few days before I can have installed pictures. The main production run will be in about 2 weeks and the finishing will be about 7-10 days. So these will start shipping in about 4 week. Sign up here if you are interested. And yes I can ship multiple sets in one box. When I have these ready for finishing I'll forward the payment info.

Thanks to all !!
Sorry to have taunted you, but I hope you find it worth the wait.

These will be identical to OEM. If you want to get technical the trim dosent match from factory, but the variation is very minor.
This is a product of the variance in materials used. The cups are stamped from a 5000 serries alloy, the trim is a 6000 serries they annodize flighty different, but close enough it's hard to tell.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 6 2011, 10:25 AM

Yes
These will be anodized just like OEM.
I could also do a short run of black annodized they would cost a little more as they are another set up, but would be a replacement for the LE chrome.

They will weight about 1# (probably less with the box), so shipping will be pretty inexpensive USPS priority mail. Maybe $6 ish.

Do we have to remove the winshield to install them?

No, but if your clips are damaged when removing the original trim then you have a real issue. It is very possible to damage new trim while trying to get it to clip into old retainers.

Ok,
I have to go to work early in the morning, so here it is.

You will not have to remove the windshield to install these, but I can also get the special tool to remove the old trim safely that I could offer as a option also.

I actually am working on the sail trim. It's a little more technical, but can be done.

The problem is the retaining pins. The outer rubber can easily be trimmed back. The problem is the retaing clips, if there's not too much rubber around the mounting points, you may be able to install without removing. I hate to say it, but it could be a bunch of work to convert back.

I had to search high and low last November for my "factory" pieces. Only 9 sets I think I coudl find at the time. Stoddard and AA had them. Paid WAY more than I wanted to, but had to finish the car. Woudl have loved to get in on this if it had been a bit earlier.

Good luck with them. I'm sure they will be great!

I'm in for 2 sets. Do you have a source for the clips? I'll get payment sent as soon as details are finalized.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 7 2011, 08:09 PM

The clips I can provide no problem, I will be working out the forming dies in the next 3-4 days and will post pictures of the molded parts as soon as I'm done. They will go to finishing to verify that the black and silver will will be correct and product will be available to ship in about 3-4 weeks. I will not take any money until I have production finalized, and can schedule a ship date.

As there are a few EU members here maybe one guy could consolidate these to save cash on shipping? Just thinking, the box I will use will be charged dimensional weight. The only issue I can see is re-distribution if I ship in one box to save cash on shipping.

Definitely down for a set. I just need to be sure and catch the announcement.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 10 2011, 01:38 AM

I can provide the corner and upper pieces no problem, I will also have the trim removal tool for those that want one. This is very helpful in not breaking the clips that hold the trim in. Did a test on the forming tooling for the bottom and it's great. The sides are a little more difficult. I may wind up having to form these right off the extrusion press. It will add some cost, but to all of those that have signed up here thus far, you will get the $99 price.

Thanks,
Mark
PS for the black ones you will need to get these from me if you want matching ones.

Posted by: Tom_T Mar 10 2011, 02:21 AM

I'll need a set with the corners, joiner piece & tool too, which I suppose you'll get the full price with all that to us later.

Whenever that is, we'll talk and figure out some other stuff which I need of your other goodies to ship, plus I still want to exchange & pay the extra $75 IIRC for the later version on your front bumper top pad (I have one of the originals without the continuous SS bracing inside).

Cheers! beerchug.gif

Tried the forming dies today, the bottom piece was no problem, The corners didn't form well. the radius even with F temper aluminum still didn't form smoothly. Hate to say it but I'll probably add at least 2 weeks to the delivery as as I'm having to modify the tooling to actually stretch the outside of the extrusion.

They will be more labor intensive but as I said earlier, anyone who stepped up up to today - This post will be able to purchase these at $99.
After this post I will most likely have to add some labor to it.

Thanks Mark.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2011, 12:29 PM

Got it figured out I have to build a fixture to stretch the aluminum around the corner and heat the material to form it. I had hoped it would cold form in a die. It didn't. At least it's worked out The GB price will actually increase to $120, with reg price at $150. Those that signed up prior to the cut off will get the original price as a thanks for signing up early. I'll have metal in 10 days and will start producing these as soon as I get the material.

Another question -
Black -

The cost for powdercoated is much less than the anodized,
it adds $10 vs $24 per set.

Any thoughts on this? I have to all one way to get the best pricing.

Sign me up for silver with tabs and tool.

Dang, I am going to have to read this site more often

I just read the black anodized update. I'll take two complete sets then. One silver and one black. And You don't have to charge me the original price for the first set. I'm willing to pay for decent stuff. And all of yours is Mark. Thanks!

BTW, IMO, powder coat won't be as nice as anodized. And it will chip if it takes a rock.

Thanks
Phillip

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2011, 07:13 PM

ind of what I was going for on the black annodized. I'll have to run a sample to make sure the black is as uniform as I would like it in the corners. Anytime you heat aluminum it changes the temper, so it is possible that the die will not absorb at the same rate. No way to tell until you try.

Posted by: Rleog Mar 12 2011, 07:15 PM

If you're taking votes, I'll go with black anodized, but will obviously go with the process you select.

These should be about 20-25 days out right now. the delay is in the forming. They metal has to be stretched and flattened on the corners. This will require extensive sanding and polishing. Not the cold formed process I had hoped for, but will yeild an OEM looking part.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 May 19 2011, 04:14 PM

How did the install go?? Photos? poke.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 May 22 2011, 02:56 PM

Well the installation the first time around SUCKED.

I found that the angles on the forming tooling I made were off. They weren't off by much, but enough to make the part unusable.

I wasn't sure why I was having this problem, and tried to make it fit. Unfortunately, I f'd up the edges of the paint around the windshield. headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif

I figured out my problem later that evening. I was trying to be tricky and had a windshield that was used to make the shaping forms. I made the form to produce metal pieces that were 3/16" larger than the glass. The glass fits in the hole and my assumption that the shape was identical is what screwed me.

Unfortunately I knew a few of you would be looking for these soon and I made 40 sets that I was starting to polish before I realized the issue.

Below is a picture of the new chrome 1st gen and installed 2nd gen. You can see the contour of the corners is not sharp enough to make the corner sit properly. Well at least not without putting undue pressure on the edges like I did.

Fortunately, we were able to use the existing tooling and weld material onto it and grind it to the proper shape. That was a lot of extra work!! so We are forming more pieces to send to finishing this next week as with the lead time being 7 business days.

Please note the installed part is only the polished raw aluminum, it has not been finished as I just wanted to check fit. The clips are finished pieces and they will look similar to the clips. The alloy and temper are different, but with brite dipped anodizing the variation will be minimal.

Due to the amount of work polishing these, we actually made polishing "bucks" that allow us to really put pressure on the metal without deforming it. This will help speed up the process.

This is the level of polish we have to have to get the correct finish. Which was a little surprising. Mill finish aluminum will brite dip and look like this, but we were sanding down to 1000 grit and it actually created a satin finish. The polishing is actually easier.

You can note the polished part has ripples from forming that have not been sanded. This was a picture just to show finish.

The trim will be taped to the inside of the box to help keep it from moving around, as well as any misc parts you may need.

So,
This is where we stand.

This week we will be producing the final parts I plan to have 35. These will go to finishing a week from this Monday and return the 15th of June.

I'm to the place that I'm happy with the final product and will be opening up the group buy. These will be $119+ custom box at $6. These will ship Fedex ground .

The standard price after the group buy will be $180.

I will PM those that are interested and let the fun begin. I plan to have another 30 the week after. and keep these in production until I can get some significant back stock.

This group buy will remain open until the product starts shipping on June 15th.

-Mark

I must say I have learned that I need to scale back on some of my activities as these things never seem to go as planned and having several large projects going it just feels like wack-a-mole!

Posted by: Mikey914 May 22 2011, 05:29 PM

Listed the parts on the website, and sent PM to those that I thought were interested. If I missed you PM me, or bump the thread. I'm using a coupon system to get you the group buy price. you will need to enter it on check out.

Also I have a limited number of the trim removal tools. I few of you might remember these from before, but they will allow you to remove the trim without cutting the retaining clips.

Bill was the recipient of one of the first ones off the dies. You will like the new ones much better. And we get a second shot at the shipping crush test.

I didn't get an email yet.
I need one please!
I prepaid and am waiting

When will black ones be available?

Black will be available on the second run in anodized. I do have some railing that is satin black that will be running about the time of the first run in powder, I may throw a few sets in to see how it turns out. The cost (other than the lot charge) on the black anodized material is to strip the clips (another step).

So, to answer your question, I will have some a little before and some after depending on your preference.

Just an update, the metal is fit, we are now finishing. Started by polishing up 20 sets to a mirror finish and taking them to have a light clear anodized finish. These were stripped and re polished. I'm running a set through clear powdercoating to see how it turns out, as well as sending one to be actually chrome plated.
The rest will be run in the best finish. this will occur this next week. As soon as it's finalized we will open back up the group buy.

The good news is at least I got the roofs going well.

Wow. I've known one other guy who could work with just about anything. He blew glass, wrought iron, built boats that could go in a gallery...

I called him "The master of materials".

Anyway, I'm impressed. beer.gif

These have been a lot more trouble than I anticipated. I did take a vacation that really screwed with my schedule on these, had to do it, but for for about a week before and I'm still getting caught back up.

I have reduced my schedule at my day job to work half time for the next 35 days starting this next week. This is my #1 project. Not just because I have have about 10 sets to deliver, but I've got 7K tied up in these so far and I need to have production to start taking a chunk back out of that!

I appreciate your patience. As without your support I couldn't do the things I do. I don't like borrowing your good will and understanding for this long of a period.

The main reason this has taken this long is that I wound up having to go through a training cycle in my day job that was about 15 weeks long, and 9 of that I was in class or up in the simulator in Seattle. I've had a hard time trying to keep up on the regular stuff and was unable to reduce my schedule as I had been able to in the past.

Well, I'm back, and will be resolving this as fast as I can.

Hey Mark,

When you are ready, start a new group buy thread, and we can all line up.

I want a set for Orangina, and I bet we can get a decent count when you have time.

Thanks for the door rubber. They worked beautifully. I think I have a trunk seal sent by mistake, so tell me what I owe you, but I am truly unsure.

I went and put the door panels on, so I won't need more rubber for the track car.

But the window to dash seal was killer!

Thanks!

John

Did some research on the World Pac ones. I can't find any there. I had Allan over at A&P check with his rep and no dice. PICTURES tomorrow afternoon o fthe 1st finished part. I was supposed to do this this last weekend. I started and wasn't completely happy on the finish. I'm trying again tomorrow and will post the results in detail.

I have enough material to do 70 windshields extruded, the forming I've got figured out now. The finishing if it works as planned will take 2 days tops now. So it's time to get the project put to bed. I have 10 sets of trim that got in on the group buy. I should have had this 100% done before opeing the gates, but I was sure it was done as I've always use a brit anno with no issues. This is what I thought the finish was. Long story short the finish has a real challenge. As soon as my backordered sets are shipped i will open up the group buy when I have product that can start shipping.

This has been a huge finnancial drain, so I have a very strong motivation to get these up and runnig. I have a ton of cash tied up in these and can't really take on any other large projects until these are moving.

Thanks to all for your patience.

I had not forgot, sorry for the delay in getting these up....but we figured out the problem.
Even though this is O grade material apparently they drop it in a "lite" anno tank to seal the surface, so that if it gets rained on it will not leave water spots is what I was told. They didn't charge me for it, but apparently it was a bit thicker than it normally is. The first articles that I got to prove the die ran fine, so I thought we were golden.

I noticed that as I was sanding off some of the surface that I started getting splotches. If I polished, they got real shinny. I then realized there was a coating on the material and went back to my rep and he explained what he thought was the problem, after examination he cam to the conclusion that the coating was too thick....Duh!

These are salvageable and we are stripping them now and will be polishing starting Monday. I will keep everyone posted, but we are in the home stretch. All this time I was trying to polish an anodized surface. I should have known better when it wasn't doing what we wanted. But we didn't pay for it and it was not notated, it was "mill finish" .... I guess not.

So, the production is moving along, just waiting for the finishing. Production should be available in about 7-10 days, I will contact those that have been waiting as these ship and when the backorder has been filled.
Thanks to all for your patience. So far for the 10 that be produced so far, the cost per set will be about $900 each. I have to get production to try to even break even.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Dec 30 2011, 02:02 AM

I would like to confirm that the group buy people (in Feb & March) will get the discounted price?

Yes,
$899.

Just kidding.
I plan to open up the GB once I can have the production moving at a good rate and can ship some as soon as I open it. The key is the low price, and high volume. I need to get the capacity up to make this work. This will be possible now that I have some new equipment, and a new guy helping with the polishing. They still take a bunch of time to do, but we will be able to reduce it somewhat. I plan to keep the GB price the same.

The black is in production I will have them in about 2 weeks with the clips in black.
Price will be the same, the clips wil be $1 more as they are refinsied. They will NOT be annodized (at least at this time).

What I had thought would work was polishing the aluminum to a mirror finish and coating it with a product that is made for sealing polished aluminum. We chose POR 15 http://www.por15.com/GLISTEN-PC/productinfo/GPCGG/

The Por15 was pretty thick, and not easy to work with. I tried it myself first wil not so great results. I finally got a friend of mine with a bodyshop shoot it. He had problems also, but I did learn some from it. He said the POR 15 Product was very thick, and with the pretreatment it didn't want to lay down evenly. Same problem I had, but he did make it look beter than I did.

So I have another vendor that I've been using for castings and extrusions that is willing to work with me on a new process that is more like the anodizing that we started with, but it will take some more time. If anyone wants to bail, I understand, but I will get this right unfortunately, it's taking more time money and effort than I had planned.
Below are a few pictures of the best trim. It looks good from about 3 ft, but if you look closely, there are areas that are "clumped" and it didn't lay down evenly.

I haven't paid yet but I will send money whenever you want it. thanks, mark

Thanks guys. My problem was I assumed what I had done in the past would work. Now that I have got into this further I found that my previous vendor, may not have done exaclty what was asked, as well as finding what I hope is a better process that my previous vendor didn't do.

I'm still in, no problem. My car's still in 1,000 pieces and wont get to wear these for a while anyway.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Feb 22 2012, 01:46 PM

I am curious if you have come up with any kind of a timeline yet?

I have found a used piece of chrome trim I can put on but I would rather go with the NEW one that I paid for last year.

If you think it is going to be another 9 months I will just put the used one on. If it is only 60 days I may wait!

Do you have the corners done or did those also go back to the drawing board?

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 22 2012, 03:40 PM

I see this being resolved in about 21 days based upon the production schedule. As allways I will refund the purchase if you wish, I do believe we have it this time. Also the clips are fine as they are OEM.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Feb 22 2012, 07:10 PM

If they are that close I will hold on for a while longer and see what happens!

I have these out to my fabricator I use for some of the architectural stuff I do. He's telling me any day now, we will then be trying the new finish. He's also powdercoating the ones that didn't "chrome" the way they should have in black, so I'll have those soon too. I didn't want to put those out there until I resolved the problems with the chrome. I'll poke him some more to get these to me. I sent these out to him as I haven't had much time lately.

Update-
I've been waiting for my fabricator to bend these up for the next run. It's been long enough, I have a conatact in Germany that can get these for me, I'm getting my hands on some new old stock to fill the orders I have taken the cash on. You guys have been waiting very patiently, it's going to be the best way to fufill these in a more timely manner until I can get my production squared away.
It will still be a few weeks as they are coming from Germany, but they will be OEM.
-Mark

I will still be working on these as I have a ton of cash tied up in the project, so I do have to work out the details, but I shouldn't have jumpe dthe gun on these until I had finished product ready to ship.

They are inbound. I have the inquiry in now. I'll let you know just as soon as I know as I have a few backorders to fill as well as a few new orders that are pending. Not taking any more cash on these until I have them in hand.

I would really like to get a set. Currently in the process of reassembling my car from a repaint and was going to have the chrome polished since the PO had scuffed them to paint black. Really need a bit of shiny stuff on a black car. Let me know when to PAYPAL $.

Your timing is impeccable. I am about to take all my trim to be stripped, polished and reanodized. I'll skip the windshield trim if new pieces are coming in soon. How far away are we? A couple days, a week, or a month?

Thanks,
McB

Mark has been working on these for a long time and is just filling the preorders with factory product because his manufacturing still needs to be perfected!

There are a few of us that paid back in March of last year who are quietly happy11.gif waiting!

Mark we pray.gif you!

Yes Finally got here and I got all but 2 sets, the next shipment should be here in 2 weeks or less. I have a race this weekend and I'm out early in the morning. I'll be shipping out on Monday.
Thanks to all for your patience.

These are OEM from Germany. However, in looking these over closely, I have noticed a few clues as to how these were done that may allow me to perfect mine, but for now the pipline is flowing from the Fatherland.

I received some shipping info email from you and I assume it is for this GB. Thank you for all of the hard work. I am sure it has taken much more to get this done than you had expected. But you never gave up.

My patience was rewarded with a delivery from Fedex today.

Thanks, Mark.

Now that the car is nicely painted and have new trim, I'm afraid of screwing something up.

Does anyone know of a good thread outlining the trim installation? Is there an order with which it should clip in?

Thanks in advance,
-pt

Posted by: mcbrems Sep 11 2012, 01:30 PM

I just installed mine last night. I started with the long bottom piece, marked the midpoint using a tape measure, a piece of masking tape, and a marker. I lined it up with the center grill post on the windshield wiper deck. That way I knew it was perfectly centered. Then I pushed the trim onto the clips save for the two end clips,
leaving the trim ends loose to allow maneuvering of the joint couplers into place.

The other two angled pieces were easy to position, just following the curve of the windshield frame. Push them onto the clips, except for the ends, which can then be fitted with the couplers.

My advice - After the couplers are fitted on the trim ends, put a small piece of thin plastic under the outside edge of the coupler before pressing it down into the windshield frame. It will help the coupler slip into position, and will prevent it from gouging the paint when you press downward. Then slip the plastic out when done.

My 2 cents.

This is great. Many thanks!

Just FTR and to avoid confusion, I did not opt into the group buy. Instead I had all of my aluminum trim stripped, polished and reanodized. It cost approx $500 for the entire set. I personally feel that the GB is a great value, however I didn't need new if all my other trim was also being refurbished.

It is a miracle to still have access to such a variety of 914 parts. Much thanks!
