Have to pull the motor this weekend. I have an annoying oil leak from the base of the #1 cylinder. I rebuilt the engine last year and have about 600 miles on it. I used the damn sealing rings after lapping the cylinders to the case. I just figured I would use them and didn't think I would have a problem with oil leaks.

So, I plan on pulling each cylinder, lap them to the case again and then delete the sealing ring (like I should have done the first time). I have some Curil T (sealant) and was wondering if I could use this to seal the cylinder to the case. Has anyone done this before or is just lapping the cylinders to the case good enough?

i believe i used Permatex 3H aviation sealant.

Lapping to the case is not required.

Clean everything spotless, degrease it with some brake cleaner, then run a bead of hi-temp RTV silicone around the base of the jugs. (the part that the ring sits into.) Put on the clean ring and do the silicone again, then replace the jugs.
Not a lot of silicone, just a bead then wipe it with your finger, much like caulking a bathtub.

You are confusing lapping the heads to the jugs and deleting the head sealing ring.

When I took my engine apart it didn't have sealant on the cylinder base rings. (and no leaks either) When I put it back together I didn't use sealant there. Should I have or is it just a precaution?

What about some sort of sealant between the jugs and heads? Can this help/hurt?

Nope good solid metal to metal contact at the head to cylinder joint. After lapping of course. Don't know of any sealant that could stand up to the combustion chamber violence. (high pressure fire proof).

*leave the rings in where the jugs meet the case, and use a good sealant.

*at the head, lap the jug to the head and delete the sealing ring like the bulletin says.

Rod, If I lived anywhere close to ya I'd come give ya a hand just to see how its done, I've done many small block chevys but these air cooled engines are new to me....have fun....

Levi, didn't get a chance to do it. I ended up powdercoating 22 pieces of tin for a 63 VW Bus and the next day I ended up powdercoating 12 pieces for a 72 super beetle conv. Made lots of money though. I need the extra income for my project, so it actually worked out pretty good. More than likely I will do it this weekend, I'll give you a call and let you know how it went. Oh, and please let me know when Chad receives his package.
